A very charming heartfelt little movie.
nazcarfanatic2410 September 2020
Charming, sweet, cute, mature little rom com. Sure it follows the typical formula but Brittany Snow and Sam Richardson elevate this movie from something that could've very easily been forgettable to a level of charm that'll certainly warm your heart. It doesn't fall victim to the usual contrivances or un-deserved endings you'd expect of the genre. The characters grow as people, not only that but they actively decide to better themselves

Definitely a must watch. It's now on my list of favorite romantic comedies

Not all that original, but it's funny, somewhat relatable, has a lot of charm.
thebumm-121 March 2020
I enjoyed it. It's pretty straightforward, has some great bits, and takes the A Lot Like Love approach to the romcom. The title more than indicates that. The true value is the two leads. They carry the load well.

Sam Richardson is an absolute joy to watch no matter the project so if the only thing you take from this movie is "I gotta watch more of this guy" then it's a success. He made Detroiters, he was in Mike and Dave need Wedding Dates, and probably best known for Veep, but he pops up Spy and The Office too. He's hilarious, so even in this movie where it could be a by-the-book rom-com road trip movie, he's elevating the script.

Brittany Snow is far more well-known at this point because of the Pitch Perfect series, but she's a little against type here, in my opinion. The movie starts playing Sam's character as a more redeemable guy with a few flaws, and Brittany's characters as an irredeemable girl with a few likeable traits and moves toward the center a bit with both. She probably has the most character development in the movie and she does a great job pulling it off.

As I said, it won't blow you away with originality, but it's got some humor, the two leads work well together, and of course has the lesson at the end. I'd watch it again with some friends no question.

PS - The racist posts about interracial relationships are pretty obviously stuck in the early 90s. Update your complaints, kids.

Great story that needs to be told more

Warning: Spoilers
It was cute and funny. The casting was out of the box which made the ending less predictable. I love the humanness of the story and the desire of the characters to change, grow, and become better people. This was a heartfelt story told in a cute, entertaining way. Worth watching and reflecting on. I love the brutal honesty about addiction, support groups, and recovery. Don't see enough honesty about this stuff in movies, but when it's shown, I believe it can create a pathway for lost people to find hope and healing from what culture so often condones and promotes as happiness and fulfillment. I greatly appreciated that aspect of it. Great job to everyone who worked on this film.

Disjointed but impactful
sunshinegirlynyc20 September 2020
I ended up enjoying this movie. It felt a little disjointed and clunky at the beginning, but overall, it's a really powerful, relevant story. I can't tell if it's the storyline or the directing that are the problem, but the performances of the two leads are great and the concept of sex addiction is really relevant and powerful.

Predictable but not bad

Warning: Spoilers
You've certainly seen plenty of movies like this. It follows the formula to a T basically. The characters were still likable though and that made it worth a look. It's not super funny but it has a few laughs and you like the characters. Brittany Snow in particular was pretty likable despite her many flaws.

Not comedy not romantic not neccessary
yasmeenshabana7 April 2020
In the middle of this movie I thought why the hell I am watching this? I didn't laugh not even once, it isn't romantic and certainly the actors have no charisma to keep me watching so I turned off. Don't waste your time

Don't watch or waste your time.
nobigdata23 March 2020
The movie was slow and boring with a poor message. Its a gross flick for sure and I have no idea why it was made.

When you sleep with that many people you should not be celebrated, you should have your head examined and a quarantine put on your body.

SAD flick!

Good movie for a boring Monday night

I liked it. The two of them had good chemistry. It was a solid plot and story told. Highly unlikely, but the writer's made it seem possible. I was entertained and I'm a cinephile.

Bad
bucky7167 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Gave it a 3 because I somehow managed to watch the whole thing. A recovering addict that sucks someone into her addiction, a person dealing with his own issues. The cast had some chemistry but the basis of the movie up to the happy ending was bad.

Bad for so many reasons
languagebarrier17 October 2023
First off it looks like they're really trying to push the black man white women thing into existence. No matter how statistically unlikely it is for this to happen, they still seem to make film after film with that subject matter. We have actual data on this stuff. That's the first thing.

It's also really pushing the concept of casual sex, which again is statistically not a good idea especially for women. Again, we have data on this stuff.

There's so much we can say about this movie. It's not funny, it's not realistic, and it's not a good movie.

I can't believe I actually watched it and that's on me.

So much nonsense in this movie.

A lil undercooked
BillyOceansBlues1 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This one didn't really do it for me. It was hard for me to understand the motivation for this trip they took. The setup was too loose and unclear. I wasn't even really sure what they were doing until they started doing it. And then I was wondering exactly why they were doing it, particularly him. Both characters were kinda unreasonable and hard to empathize with at various points. In the end, they just kinda said that they realized stuff, nice music starts playing, all the pieces of their lives just randomly start falling into place, their dreams come true for no reason. Just felt underdeveloped.

More then a Hook Up
solojere11 June 2021
When I heard about this movie, I had mixed feelings. I love Brittany Snow, but I don't usually like movies that are all about casual sex. I also didn't want to see Brittany degrade herself. However, I finally got around to watching it, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, and I didn't walk away thinking one of my favorite actors sold herself out for money. Honestly, I wish I hadn't dragged my feet on this one. (It is also probably more like a 7 or an 8. I just gave it a ten because I felt the low rating was unfair).

Hooking Up follows Darla Bean (Brittany Snow), a recovering sex addict who is in a quarter-life crisis, as she is about to lose her job. At the same time, Baily finds out that he has testicular cancer. Darla convinces Baily to take a road trip with her that forces them to get intimate with their issues. I won't give anything away, but I will say I was glad it wasn't all about sex, and it was needlessly crude. It was also refreshing to see a film treat sex addiction as a real thing and not just a punchline for a joke.

Brittany Snow's performance was amazing. She managed to make Darla a surprisingly deep character who was both funny and tragic. Sam Richardson also gave a great performance. I really related to his character, and he actually had really great chemistry with Brittany Snow, which is rare. It's not Pitch Perfect, and Darla is defiantly not Chloe. But Brittany Snow's performance plus a cute script is what really sold me on this movie. All I will say is go in with an open mind, and you might be suppressed. :)

Unexpected
triggerrabbit7 July 2020
This is my first review on here. I just watched this movie having stumbled upon it just the other day. I was impressed. I see a lot of people called it trashy, but I felt it was a movie with a lot of heartfelt moments. Sometimes a tad predictable, but I still loved it. Snow and Richardson are so likeable together. I walked away with a smile. Not nearly as trashy as people are saying, in my opinion.
