Original Romance with deeper message
rolbyh200227 October 2021
A story that is much deeper than it seems at first. Original, daring, and compelling. I wasn't sure where it was headed. In some ways, it works more as a drama than a romance, but in the end, love is paramount to the story.

a completely watchable film
eacampion4 April 2021
A watchable exploration of mental illness and its impact on family. While the acting is mostly good, and the cinematic shots are beautiful, it's a fairly predictable story, mostly revolving around a boy and his search for the classic manic pixie dream girl, who may or may not be a result of his mental illness.

Good but I'm Confused...
crazyonyou-0246616 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'll start by saying I enjoyed this film. The acting was good, the ride was worth it, but I am confused about the fall from the building... like was that not actually a thing? Was that all in his head? Am I over analyzing or did i just not pay close enough attention to the film? I thought for sure we would circle back and he'd be in a coma from the fall just imagining everything the whole time. Anyways the film was good I definitely would have written a darker ending but thats probably why no one wants me to make movies.

A great film

Warning: Spoilers
This is a great film about a man with schizophrenia who goes across Australia to find his love. I am quite touched by it. The scenes depicting his psychotic breakdown are very convincing too.

A very underrated film spoilers ahead
lisafordeay4 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I Met A Girl is a 2020 Australian romantic drama starring Brenton Thwaites,Lily Sullivan,Joel Jackson and Zahrs Newman. Directed by Luke Eve,the movie follows a young man named Devon(Thwaites) who happens to be an aspiring musician with schizophrenia. Losing control of his condition he falls off a roof building wanting to commit suicide and is awakened the next day in a different apartment where he meets a young woman named Lucy(Sullivan) who explains that her dog found him laying on the ground and she decided to help Devon out. However when Lucy disappears all of a sudden,Devon finds a note left by her telling him that she will see him in Sydney. But is she really real or is she just an illusion.

Overall I enjoyed this film. Especially the twist where I was saying to myself don't tell me Lucy is a ghost and Devon made her up. But surprisingly she wasn't as she was a patient with Devon at the mental hopsital. I've never heard of this film before only I stumbled on it today. The acting was good and I guess what drew me to this film was it's lead actor Brenton Thwaites who appeared in Maleficent as Prince Philip before he was replaced in its sequel.

I search for a ...
kosmasp5 September 2022
Girl. Well not me - nor you (the viewer(s), but the main character here, so no pun intended. Though even more important what are the expectations here? Not from the main character in this case, but from the viewer(s). If your expectations are low like mine were, you may very well be positively surprised.

But it is not just what you expect versus what you get. Because the movie is above many other rom-coms - and I do not mean to put those down. This differs from them by having a main character who is quite out there - literally and no pun intended. Well played by the actors and a script that gives us crazy - something I really liked.

So there is more than some things to enjoy here. It looked generic to be honest, but it is anything but. A main character who is not just flawed, but has issues (no pun intended) ... are you up for it?

A man with mental issues embarks on an epic, cross-country journey to find the woman of his dreams - who may be all in his head.

The Music is alright acting is good. But overall the movie is dull.

I met a girl is a emotional film with a powerful message of love and hope!
sexyguyheckya12 September 2020
Brenton Thwaites does a incredible job playing his character in this film as a young man with schizophrenia. The film has all kinds of layers of romance, sadness, drama, and sweet heartfelt moments. The film does not shy away from his schizophrenia showing the true way of what it's like to live with a illness like that but at the same time also showing that it can be controlled if taken care of the right way. This film is a film for all people to learn and grow knowing no matter who you are or what your situation is in life that there's always hope.

I'm glad I soldiered on for the ending
diogomanuel15 August 2023
I was not planning to leave a review on this one. In fact, halfway to the ending I wasn't exactly sure I would watch it till the very end. But alas, I had nothing better to do... and the options were not that great... so, I guess I'm happy that I didn't give up on the movie. And you shouldn't either. The story is not a common one, movies don't usually portray the everyday hurdles of a family like this. Who wants some realism when most of the times people just want to be entertained and forget about their everyday life. However, these movies are also needed as options, and their realism makes them good.

For me, the real hero is the big brother. He is one that every little brother deserves to have. But the big brother also deserves a great little brother, and I will purposely not tell you if he will eventually have one or not. In my opinion, the movie answers this question. The character Lucy is a star and I have to thank her for having waited to see where all of this was going, and how it would end. Give this movie a chance, watch it till the very end, even if you feel like giving up. It all makes sense...

Have the people who made this even met a person with schizophrenia?
elisemoana2 April 2021
Sure it's entertaining enough (I guess) but If the people who made/wrote/produced this film have ever met or known anyone with schizophrenia- I'd be really surprised. And even more so if those people aren't offended by their depiction of this Illness.

Be a little patient, watch till the end, you'll find it rewarding ;)
jseynopsis12 September 2020
I'm not gonna spoil the show and tell you what happened. All I can say is, be a little patient, watch till the end and you'll love it. I loved the reaction of his brother at the end of the movie. Almost gave up halfway, but just glad that I hung on to it. You should too :)

Well directed, well produced, moving performances
nadzmatadz13 September 2020
A tricky endeavor to depict mental illness alongside romance - it's a relief that the reality of the illness, as well as the lead's strife to adapt with it, are prioritized over the romance. None of that "love cures all" BS.

A well-acted romantic drama!
alsiersid11 September 2020
'I Met A Girl' is a beautiful, heartfelt and wonderful journey of a man who has fallen in love with this amazing girl. Brenton Thwaites captures Devon's struggles really well and shares excellent chemistry with Lily's "Lucy" character and his brother Nick (Dan Paris). Never was there a dull moment in the movie, as I experienced joy, sadness, hopelessness and triumph as I lived through Devon's journey with him.

I thoroughly enjoyed it!

If you are a sucker for romantic movies, this would be your jam :)

This movie should be closer to a 6.7!
luzannevantonder16 September 2020
I only watched this coz I saw Brendon Thwaits (Devon) was in it. I was pleasantly surprised. The actors were superb, the script was heartfelt and the scenery was inspired. I also really appreciated a lead with a mental illness. Worth the watch!

I'm very impressed with this movie!
cooksonjohn11 September 2020
I met a girl is a must see film cause it is sweet, charming but can be uncomferable to watch at times, sexy, and dramatic. The cast is great and the characters are likable. The movie is definitly worth watching cause it really shows how difficult it can be dealing with mental illness but how you can deal with it and be able to live your life not having to be sheltered your whole life.

This movie did everything right
tom-552 December 2020
I know this writing/directing team from their previous digital series Low Life and High Life that deal with depression and bipolar disorder, so I expected sensitivity and realism in their depiction of the lead's schizophrenia. I expected them to mine humor in loads as well. There are a lot of truly funny moments, and not one of them cheap or undeserved. What is truly impressive in the story telling is how true it is to both living with mental illness and living with someone with mental illness, while still being bearable to watch. And to make it a love story story at the same time raises the degree of difficulty a lot. But Dolmans script draws real human beings that the actors deftly embody. Luke Eve's direction is masterful, delivering a pace and flow that just works. The editing and effects and amazing and just right. It is sweet, sad, thrilling, chilling, horrifying, and finally hopeful without stretching the truth. I didn't expect the ending, but the movie earned it. The makes you work and isn't mindless or escapist,, but it's totally worth it.

Mental Illness and Love
svynronin2 August 2021
This is a great little movie about love of family, hope, finding true love, and dealing with mental illness. Each character does a good job acting and portraying the difficulty each has. I was especially empathetic to the brother since he has to deal with the protagonist's bad decisions. The film is full of hope and despair as the protagonist struggles with psychotic episodes of both extremes, both mania and depression. It does a good job of not focusing too much on one or the other to overwhelm the film with either. I would say this film is really about hope. There is beauty in how each character deals with hope. The protagonist in finding love and purpose, the brother just trying to help his ailing brother, to even the brother's wife who is pregnant and struggling to deal with the life she married into while preparing to have a child of her own. This movie does a great job helping the viewer to be aware of people's challenges with mental illness while also giving us hope without becoming too cheesy or sentimental. I highly recommend seeing this film when you just need some hope. It struggles to find its way there but the payoff when you get there is worth it. Such as life.

An unexpected absolute 10.
isaachorstmeiers13 September 2020
There are no right words to describe how this film it's just a piece of art, from beginning to end it just captivates your mind, heart and soul. The atention to detail from the director, it's just amazing. Every character it's on point and really well played by everyone on this film. I've never seen an ending with so much power, suspense, and intrige. There are just no flaws on this film, that's why this movie it's an absolute 10.

Unconventional
baunacholi-8615927 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A very well told tale about a young guy suffering from schizophrenia... what I loved the most was the unconventional way it's told. It's funny, despite the heavy topic, innovative (maybe for my taste a bit too comical at parts), heartfelt & optimistic as well as sad & tragic however always genuine. Should reach a much bigger audience as it has definitely something profound to say: The importance of family & love.

The journey of love, understanding, and mental illness
April-Jo4 April 2021
I was looking for a good romance to watch when I stumbled across this movie. Being American I wasn't familiar with any of the actors. I came to IMBD to learn more about them. I have an uncle that is schizophrenic and it's not easy dealing with it as a family member. Brilliant performance by all. I highly recommend this movie.

Romantic Comedy With a Few Twists
bruce2-129 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler Alert! This is a Rom Com, so all the typical sit-norms of a rom com are in play, including the ending, but that is ok, 'cause I really like these people, and I am rooting for them, from start to end!

It is not easy being normal, in these crazy times. And Being Schizophrenic makes it even harder! But love can help! :)

If you think the world has passed you by, leaving you in a state of repetitive dread, this movie may just give you a little bit of hope, and a whole lot of great scenery, on the way!

So what you waiting for? Watch it mate! Cheers :)
