TEARS WILL FLOW!!!!
rebekah-davis24 January 2019
No spoilers here, but this is by far my favorite episode of this show! Everyone of the characters, main and supporting, filled the episode with palpable emotion and suspense. Sonny (AJ Quinn) is so incredibly expressive and you can feel his every emotion for the entire episode! I have always loved David Boreanaz, and this episode shows that as time passes his ability to pull feelings from his audience are only getting better. MUST WATCH!!!!

Best episode of a TV show I've seen in years.
planetwriter25 January 2019
This episode was so good I'm writing this review about a minute after I finished watching it. The premise: Sonny is trapped in a torpedo tube on a submarine and he's running out of time. The writers set things up brilliantly this season by having us fall for this character and then putting him in mortal danger here. This was BY FAR the best hour (okay, 42 minutes) of television I've seen in years, completely to my surprise. It evoked the best war movies - and submarine movies - of the past, yet felt completely **authentic and in line with the characters and storylines of this show. Absolutely wonderful, totally nail-biting, and if this isn't nominated for something it's a crime. Kudos to whoever came up with the story and script!

**Reading some of the other reviews, it seems that it may not be _technically_ authentic. However, I have to rate it based on what I felt as I watched it, and - not having served on a submarine myself! - I was completely drawn in. (This is a drama, not a documentary, after all.) I'm a research scientist working on Mars's atmosphere, so I could make the same complaint about "The Martian" (the air isn't dense enough to blow anyone over, even during a big dust storm!) so I absolutely understand the complaints. HOWEVER, even if it takes some liberties, I still really loved this episode!

Unexpected.
johncrawford-7179326 October 2021
An acting master class. It shows the bond between soldiers and how the concept of toxic masculinity is utter tosh.

There are quite a few touching monents in this show but the whole troupe really earned their pay on this one.

10 for emotion, 1 for accuracy
MiketheWhistle25 January 2019
The other reviews cover just how inaccurate the show material is. I never served on a sub, but even my surface time allowed me enough to have to keep saying this is a drama not a documentary over and over. If you ignore the errors, this is definitely one of the most moving tv shows you'll ever watch.

(As a general comment on CBS and the number of shows they have that relate to the Navy, they truly give a good impression of what it's like to serve. With the number of shows being ncis, ncis la, seal team, magnum, hawaii 50, and likely several I haven't watched, the errors that are very basic is annoying. With that many shows they can't come up with one tech consultant that can screen away some of these errors is annoying. Some I guess are allowed for shooting ease, but some others are simply too big. For example, on H50 having a Marine say they were corpsman is completely wrong wrong wrong and anyone that served in the Marines and Navy would know that right off. In this ep someone else already covered the ways that tube could be opened right off make sense to me being ignorant of the particulars. So come on CBS, try vetting some of this stuff with a Vet!!!!)

I never got around to watching SEAL TEAM during its run on CBS from 2017 to 2024.....
tarwaterthomas7 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
.....but then I was doing the channel-surfing thing and came across this episode called TIME TO SHINE which was being broadcast on a CBS affiliate from Albany, Georgia. Under the leadership of Master Chief Petty Officer Jason Hayes (David Boreanaz), that lovable commando outfit Bravo Team locates a suspicious bunch of cargo from Iran, after which they are extracted off the coast of North Korea. Upon reaching the assigned Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine U. S. S. Booker T. Washington, the SEALs have to use the torpedo tubes to board the sub as there is a fault with the lock-out chamber and why wasn't it fixed before the voyage? Anyhoo, one of the seals named Sonny Quinn (A. J. Buckley) would have to be the last to crawl inside the torpedo tube when it malfunctions and traps him inside. The water keeps rising, and the boys in Bravo Team can't get him out of there even though there's a serious leak that will cause him to drown. And that's because adding to the problem, there's a (expletive deleted) North Korean submarine bearing down on them, so the submarine commander (played by Michael McGrady) has no other choice but to order silent running, and that means shutting off the air conditioning and the power to the torpedo tube that has poor Sonny inside. Which means his rescue has to be postponed, and if that means he has to drown, well, that's the way the ball bounces. The safety of the sub's crew takes priority. Well, Master Chief Hayes comes up with a bright idea to fake out the North Korean sub and send if off in another direction. The idea works, and Sonny's life is saved. Looks like I'm going to have to watch all the episodes of SEAL TEAM if this nerve-racking episode is any indication. This was a good one. Tell you what, though, I half expected Emily Deschanel to show up. But that's just me.

Real submariner's take on Hollywood
mgeorge-3027624 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
UNCLASS

As with every other TV show or movie that tries to discuss submarine operations- although I realize most everything we do is classified and hard to show in a public domain, this was ridiculously exaggerated and far fetched. Most of this show appeared to have been filmed on a surface ship, used surface Navy lingo, and added drama to an otherwise non-event on an actual submarine.

Want to know what to do if the muzzle door sticks? Bypass hydraulics and open it. There is little to no electricity in the torpedo tube. Is it slowly filling with water? Open the drain valve more. Reactor issue? We have more than 12 books that cover every type of issue that can happen- and we practice every scenario. The COB reported he hadn't seen a lost of propulsion in 24 years of service? We run that drill at least twice a week. Was this is first boat?

Hollywood- Listen up. If you need help writing a script for a submarine movie or show, call me. I'll give you advice for free. I would rather miss a big paycheck than to see one more stupid rendition of what people think a boat is like

Chief Nuclear Machinists' Mate (Submarines) Michael George, USN (Veteran)

No logic!
montani-225 January 2019
Ok, so I get how the captain would want all four forward torpedo tubes available to him in the event his boat had to engage the enemy. However, if they were unable to open the door to extract the Seal, how were they going to insert a torpedo into the tube? As for the episode, this was that I would describe as a filler episode and one that can be missed.

Drama not Accurate
dncorp24 January 2019
U.S. Navy U.S.S. George Washington Decommissioned 1985, Commissioned 1959.

Torpedo Tubes have manual overrides especially on older Boats (Submarines). Other method from previous training as an Officer on a Boat (668i, Submarine) and BUD/S, open the outer torpedo tube door. New Boats (Submarines) the electric solenoid "lock" is easily bypassed or even unbolted.

Most U.S. Navy S.E.A.L. Teams have at least one Thermite Grenade, that would cut the hinges off in seconds, but may also burn thru the decks and the outer hull in seconds also.

There is the current very old "British Thermal Arc Cutting Torch", that even when I as a U.S. Military Officer training with the U.S. Navy there was at least one set on board ships, and boats (submarines), can cut thru 4 inches steel like a bank vault door in seconds, usually used to rescue trapped sailors stuck water tight doors, or under steel debris.

Synopsis: 40 minutes in a torpedo tube
insideout09825 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This was the most ridiculous and boring episode I have ever seen, and frankly, completely unlike any of the other action-packed episodes. I love this show. I really do. But this was beyond the pale. A one billion dollar sub has no way of manually opening - or draining - it's torpedo tubes? What are the taxpayers paying for? There was also no real sense that the crew was even on a sub. It looked more like a bunch of extras with time on their hands in the hull of a ship anchored in Long Beach. Please don't do this again. Thanks.

Cringe
kendell-646624 December 2020
There is an override for an override. And I wish I could have overridden this episode. My submariner husband couldn't sit still with the anxiety of everything that was wrong wrong wrong!

But I do have something with seeing attractive men cry, so there was that.

worst episode of all time.
matty-j-128 January 2019
Dull, boring, totally ridiculous. Skip it. The most unbelievable scenario I've ever seen. Writers must have been on holidays and they got the work-experience kid to do it. Woeful garbage.

Too many obvious technical errors.
deeplou25 January 2019
Not to go over what has previously been mentioned, the boat went to general quarters- I am sure on a sub it's same as surface ship- all hatches and doors are closed and dogged, permission has to be granted to pass thru any door or hatch. Here they are walking back and forth between control room and torpedo room. And where are all the sub personnel whose GQ station is the torpedo room. Only been on couple of subs, but the watertight doors on all were small.

Poor script writing
dave45115 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A poorly written storyline. Surely an experienced Master Chief would know th at the lives of a sub crew are considered higher than one individual. Also, no Master Chief would talk to any vessel captain in the way it was scripted in this episode. As ex millitary, the lack of respect for higher ranks, and massive ego, ruined this episode.

Worst episode so far.
imho-612-93415412 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
S2 episode 5 was the best so far and this one, episode 13 was the worst. After 15 minutes i said to my wife; "should we fast forward to the end when he gets out of the tube because nothings gonna happen in this episode". I was correct. You can easily fast forward this episode because it's just boring, and you know that they wont kill Sonny in the end. Don't now if we can blame the director for this because the writers haven't done a good job.

It was a fine episode but the CPR/AED use was unrealistic
mingle1822 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As detailed and particular with their branches of the military aspects of the show you would think they would be with the rest of the particulars. The CPR/AED part of the rescue bothered me most. First of all compressions should have been started while the AED was getting set up. May have avoided getting shocked in the first place. Secondly the AED pads weren't even stuck on his body they were lifted which would not have read or even shocked the person. Just bothers me they can be so into details with other more complicated parts of the show but something so simple they let slide.

Worst Episode Yet
bill-21581 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's so much wrong with this episode, I don't know where to begin, or how much to write. I could probably write a document longer than the script. Again, where are your technical advisors and what are they doing?

I don't expect them to be able to get a real Mk 48 torpedo for filming a TV show, but could you have at least painted it green to make it look more like a real torpedo?

The torpedo tubes them selves looked so phony! The entire sub looked wrong, and the situation they find themselves in is all wrong.

As if the scenario with the torpedo tube could happen as described, and a grinder was too loud to use - how about a torch? Pretty quiet when compared to a grinder.

Then, the sub captain talked about how damaging one torpedo tube will hurt his combat effectiveness? First of all, he has 3 other tubes. Secondly, sine the tube Sonny is stuck in is already damaged and leaking seawater from the ocean side, he's not using that tube anyway. To make things even more unbelievable, once they get Sonny out of the tube, the seaward door miraculously stops leaking. What B. S.!

Furthermore, an SSGN's main offensive weapon is their Tomahawk missiles, not their torpedoes. Then, the captain says something about his ship being part of the nuclear triad or something. Sure, the SSGN's carry Tomahawk cruise missiles which can have nuclear warheads, but these are tactical, not strategic. The big-time nuclear deterrent is with the SSBN's and their ICBMs.

Again, I could go on and on, but let me just say this episode was terrible, and yet another insult to our intelligence!

Soap Opera Hell !
harrytumilson21 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Just what-the-heck was the purpose of this episode? I got into this series for the action. I understand that the writers, etc. Have taken a lot of liberties treading on the toes of army and air force elite teams, but the action was there and realistic enough for me. Albeit some episodes had more soapy side drama than my personal taste enjoys, but always at a tolerable level.

Then came this dramatic dumpling. Not one iota of action! Outside of a couple of somewhat tense and/or tear-jerky moments, a total bore from beginning to end. I admit to being curious throughout as to whether the writers were planning on an uplifting happy ending or if this was to be some sort of fitting tribute to a main character being killed-off. Generally, I consider this episode to be three-quarters of an hour I could have better used watched the paint dry in my newly redecorated kitchen. I sincerely hope that we won't be subjected to any more of this kind of drivel!
