Pretty sure ,this movie wants to be silly...
SirDuke66612 February 2021
I can understand, why this movie get´s some hate here... It´s quite stupid and silly; childish and blatantly awful;

But it really seems to be on purpose!

Don´t you take this serious! Were back in the 90´s, were everdays television was full of childish silliness!

And this movie really catches this moment.

Well, this doesn´t make this a good movie, no! But it´s still slightly more then OK. I partially enjoyed it!

So six stars from here.

Just 80's/90's fun
sunsetrave9 February 2021
If you want to watch the movie to see Scott Adkins in a standard hard action role you are completely wrong and wasting your time. The movie is definitely not for you.

The movie is for you, you who like to play or have played video games, who find it funny when something like this is implemented in a weird way as a live action movie. It's one of this movies, not serious, not a great story, no large budget, but a lot of Self-irony, a good feeling and the charisma that everyone involved had fun with it. In a world where every word is weighed and everything always means the end of the world, as we know it, is coming. This is a nice movie to turn off the brain and to have a lot of fun with it.

Not sure I want to relive the 90's now.

Here's The 4K Lowedown on "Max Cloud" (NR - 2020 - DVD)

Genre: Fantasy/Martial My Score: 5.4

Cast=6 Acting=4 Plot=4 Ending=4 Story=4 Imagine=7 CGI=6 Pace=6 Fight=7 Stunt=6

Set in the 90's, a girl finds an easter egg and gets sucked into the Max Cloud video game. She must finish the game to get out without losing her one life or getting stuck in the game forever.

"The fate of the universe is once again in the hands of...MAX CLOUD." Ok this was dumb, but I did like how they brought in the glitches from the old 90's games. It reminded me of a low rent Zathura. I was hoping for a 'so bad it's good' quality...but it didn't quite make it off the planet for me. I have often thought of reliving my twenties, but am having second thoughts if that's what it looked like.

wow that's bad
nicolasmaczk22 December 2020
Not even a good bad, or a "so bad it's funny" nor a "bad B movie", but... There's some good. I like the music, the CG looks nice and colorful. The rest is bad and just weird , and again, not a good weird. Another talented one lost his funding to that crap most certainly, unless it's totally self funded...

Is it supposed to be this bad?
dkyforever20 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I know that there are movies that are so bad they're good, and I seriously wonder if the director was trying to go for that here. Unfortunately, it's not good... At all. I admit, I'm a fan of silly films, and there were some scenes that wee pretty cool in this one, but so much of it is off putting. Scenes don't flow well, dialogue is really odd and some of the decisions by characters just don't make any sense at all. One thing that really bothered me (because it could have been done so much better) was the dialogue between Sarah while in the game, and Cowboy while playing the game. The "Cowboy footage" and the in game footage of their dialogue don't mesh at all. I actually remarked to my wife as we watched this, that it seems like the kind of movie you're supposed to be high to watch. I'd recommend not watching it. I hate to say that, but yeah, stay away.

What a ride!
ivanaaaaaaaaa21 December 2020
Obviously, this isn't a typical Scott Adkins movie (and could never be on the same level as one of his martial arts movies), but it was a fun ride, nonetheless. It had a very 90's feel, a fun soundtrack to match it, purposely (I hope, anyway) cheap visuals, and the whole thing was just corny and silly and fun. I loved Max's personality (as a joke and in a movie, obviously) and I would have loved to see more of it, or even more extreme. There was a little bit of fighting with some of his signature moves, but not too much.

They did kind of steal a line from Predator, and I'm still not sure if I love or hate that, but it was so unexpected and made me laugh out loud for a couple of minutes.

If you go into this expecting a low budget, corny movie with Scott Adkins trying something different, I think you'll enjoy it. (As someone else mentioned, if this wasn't a Scott Adkins movie, this probably would have been a 5/10.)

kevgjnh18 December 2020
After watching only 30 minutes of this film I can't believe that Scott Adkins actually accepted the script for this pile of crap, Scott would be better as the new James Bond 007 as he is such a talented actor

Not too bad came in with low expectations
edgarkaz20 December 2020
But the acting and cast is pretty damn epic. Some stuff looks cheap but it still looks pretty good. It has some dark humor in it which I love actually. It gets bloody as hell which is always fun as well

Audience
pjcguy-963-67726120 December 2020
A movie has to have an audience, and I simply cannot find who the audience for this film is supposed to be. Youngsters won't get the archaic game allusions and are not a proper audience for the swearing and finger giving anyway. Millennials would find the situations to be, well, stupid, and as an older adult, I've seen better attempts at video game/movie combinations and with more adult themes than this. This is a throwaway film without an audience.

It's idiotic and it's fun
lamieur3 February 2021
I have no idea who Scott Adkins is, but all the other reviewers seem to have a negative opinion of his interpretation of his role... I don't understand this, not only did he have fun playing a silly video game character, mid-movie we learn that his character has a super cute back-story (stupid, sure, but that's the point! I was completely captured!)

So about the movie, it was a pastiche of the 80s/90s movies. The story is between Jumanji and that movie where two kids bring a hot chick alive through a TV, I just can't remember the title. Which is fine, those movies were forgettable, but still fun!

The pastiche works, the game character's presence and jokes are... wooden, and that's by design. The game, when shown as an SNES game, is awesome. Meanwhile, inside the game, the characters do and say stuff that's deeper than the arcade game they're in. That's absolutely awesome. There's a nod to printed game guides, character back stories, and all of that eventually completes the immersion. I've developed a game in my time and to me it was absolutely awesome seeing the discrepancy between what the sprite-based characters did in an arcade-style game, compared to a 80s/90s developer's idea of what the character actually was about. I won't mark this as spoiler, but you'll see what I mean when the time comes. And believe me, it's awesome through that lens.

I't's a B movie and it's aware of it, making the best of it. It's a pastiche of a tiny sub-genre of 80s/90s movies, so maybe not for everyone. But if you're in the right mindset, you will enjoy it. And hats off the the people who created the pixel art for the game, that was actually amazing and completely transparent, as opposed to the spaceship CGI which was obviously (but very consciously) crap ;)

80's Throwback ridiculously funny
Ckn4824 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If you've ever played an 80's computer game, this movie will make sense to you. Having said that, even our 8yr old was in stitches over this movie. The real life characters are doing what their computer versions do and its real funny watching them all sped up performing impossible moves for an actual human.

There's one scene where the character ducks down behind a console and its obvious hes there but true to 80's games the foe keeps loosing him even though they are no more than meters apart. ridiculous.

Multiple kills, impossible. A character being able to stop a spacecraft from taking off, oh the hilarity.

I would recommend this

Very fun "HOOOOOOOOOOO!"
korythacher5 September 2022
Bottom line, Max Cloud delivers what is promises: silly video game themed jokes. It's not an amazing movie, but it is fun, and delivers what you want.

Max Cloud has a lot of funny jokes, especially with the fight scenes. The actors do a great job of acting like one dimensional video game action stars and I think it worked out for them. Little things like yelling catch phrases occasionally and having some over the top action moves really added to the whole experience.

Tommy Flannigan is great, and I love seeing him on screen in any movie.

Unfortunately, I think everything they did with the "real world" was pretty bad. They didn't seem to know exactly how they wanted to tie in the real world, so it just felt shoehorned in and took away from it a bit. They tied it together poorly, they had hammy acting that just didn't _quite_ work for me, and they had some very specific details/items that they didn't do anything with, so it just felt like random fluff to fill up time. They honestly could have removed it completely and the movie would have been more entertaining.

Over all though, Max Cloud is a fun watch, and I'm glad I found it. I was torn between 5-6/10, but the real world side was flat enough I rounded down.

"Woosh", 80's-90's gaming and culture spoof.
shide_8518 January 2021
Smaller spoilers lie ahead, nothing that really exposes the movie.

This is a spoof movie of the 80's and 90's, how do i know? Well even though alot of the references has aluded me since it was some time ago there are plenty that hasn't, those include the dad/mom which always comes in at badly timed moments, actually making parody of Arnold's line "stick around" (Predator 1987) and some other ones. I'm not saying this is done greatly, but having the actors semi invested in it helps it out alot. I couldn't peg which games it was referencing but the layout was one that existed in many games, from Sega and Jurassic Park to NES 8bit TMNT way back (yes, it does look like Sega; controller and gfx).

Pro's Actors were semi invested and caught on to the style above anticipated The continous gaming spoofs were a nice touch, but it could have used a little more comedic relief as with the huge enemey midway or so. bang for buck, this looks like they got good value for money

Con's Editing (well managed editing and camera angles makes alot of difference, it didnt work all the way here with to standard shots - not many suprises to be had) Lighting (the overall theme works allright and some special effects are above anticipated but some larger darkness in some scenes would have helped out the visuals (atleast towards the end). Follow through - there was several possibilities to draw the spoof further that were missed (the shaking of the screen that usually happened before end bosses could have loosened a rock and killed the end boss to mention one example that afaik hasn't been done)

End notes: The concept isn't new, but its refreshing to see it used elsewhere even if larger productions have the ability to make a movies of the same sort (aka not another washed out Jumanji, lacking originality and fresh ground).

Came for Scott Adkins
xartreed19 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Big fan of Adkins and love to support his direct to video films. I'm also a big fan of science fiction and comedy. Sadly, this was a misfire across the board.

The premises from the trailer sounded great. Adkins is the titular hero of the video game Max Cloud, and he helps a teenaged girl escape when she is beamed in.

But, the film makes it needlessly complicated and dull. Too much "lost in the woods" filmmaking, meaning the cast wonders the spaceship for most of the runtime. Its 20 minutes until Adkins fights anyone.

Still, the cast does their best, the music and costumes are colorful, and a special shoutout to the cinematographer. They make the whole production look much better than it unfortunately is.

Scott Adkins meets Zapp Brannigan.
hamiltr-6800825 July 2021
Cheesy as hell but definitely one for the kids. It's a bit like jumanji meets the last star fighter. It has all of the typical player moving the avatar moves, like jumping for no reason.

My kids liked it.

Max Cloud Meets Red Dwarf??
damianphelps6 March 2021
It took me a little while to wrap my head around what was going on here. Not story wise, more about who this was pitched at. At the end I concluded this is a tweeners movie.

It does have a few laugh out moments and I do applaud both Scott Adkins and Tommy Flanagan for dropping their egos and committing 100% to these silly spoof characters.

I don't know if I can recommend this but I have to congratulate all involved for doing something different :)

Another worst action film from Scott Adkins! Full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! The action scene also far worse than Star Wars! Not recommended!
kwenchow28 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film start with a spaceship calling for Mayday, and the introduction of Jake, and Max scene! As turnout, this film is about Cowboy, and Sarah's father need to save Sarah from the video game she been transported into, by winning the video game! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the playing dumb scene, overuse of the switch from left to right angle scene, overuse of the calling names scene, overuse of the act like gay scene, and overuse of the video game POV scene! Make the film unwatchable! All the killing scene have blood at certain point, but overall portray by sideways, messy, have slow-motion, just saw the lightning, and smoke! Make the film quite frustrated to watch! Barely laughable scene is, Max kicking a decapitated head at his opponents! At the end, Sarah been transported back to her room! Sarah's avatar "Jake" back with his teammate in the video game at the very end! That's it! Wasting time to watch!
