Beyond talented Rogéria, this is a compulsory documentary for anyone interested in gender issues
guisreis23 March 2022
Very well done documentary about life and career of famous and talented Brazilian transgender artist Astolfo Pinto, well known by artistic name Rogéria. The film has funny moments but also strong testimonies: besides testimonies of several important colleagues, his/her family also proves to be very interesting, remarkably loving and united, although multi-racial and with a transgender inside a society full of prejudices (particularly considering life in decades 50's, 60's and 70's). Fictionalized scenes help to tell Astolfo/Rogéria's story, and works well in my opinion. Rogéria/Astolfo is also a remarkable character outside stage: he/she is very certain about his/her performativities, which not only stuggles heteronormativity, but also contradicts the most established alternative queer formulae. Therefore, it is not only a good biography documentary, but also a deep compulsory film for anyone interested in thinking and discussing gender.
