I enjoyed it. Found it to be captivating inspite of it being predictable. It is beautifully shot with amazing LA vibe.

This kinda detective thrillers used to be regular in the late 80s n early 90s.

This one reminded me of Chinatown too.

The movie is not at all boring n moves at a decent pace.

There are many poorly developed characters n the only flaw i found is rather than making it into a dark n tension filled murder mystery, the makers opted it the more comical n light hearted approach.

Enjoyable fun and characterful whodunnit.
Opinate28 December 2021
If you don't go in expecting too much there is lots to enjoy in this behind the scenes of a movie studio murder. It doesn't take itself too seriously and has lots of licks of a film noir, but a much lighter mood.

I liked it. Probably not enough to watch over and over, but it works as a piece of solid entertainment, and hits the right buttons to make for an entertaining frolic.

Hunnan was standout - I have never seen him in anything but enjoyed his performance. Gibson was good, as usual, if a bit over-the-top with his British accent. But it fit the caricatured mood of the film so it's all good.

pretty damn good
bainz27 December 2021
I don't write many reviews so when I do the movie has to be really good (or really, really bad). This movies is funny, witty and keeps you guessing. Solid acting all around, not too long and had some quirky characters to keeps things interesting. Definitely one of the better movies I've seen this year. You could say this type of film has been made before and you're probably right - but it's unique and entertaining enough for me to easily recommend it.

Got past the artiness and had a good time
thekarmicnomad4 January 2022
I personally don't get on with arty style productions.

I hate that the camera is rarely straight and level or we have to watch the scene unfold from behind a fan, inside a cupboard or from the building opposite.

So at first I was not impressed by this.

But I did actually grow to like it.

This has a real film noir feel about it as the main character slugs it out with thugs between meeting with alluring fem-fatal.

There is a mystery here that you can solve yourself but it is not really Earth shattering.

I watched this with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed it.

The characters are quirky and interesting and I enjoyed the way the story unfolded in several layers.

Slow paced and sort of pointless story...
paul_haakonsen19 April 2022
I stumbled upon the 2021 crime mystery "Last Looks" by random chance here in 2022, and seeing that them ovie had the likes of Morena Baccarin and Mel Gibson on the cast list, of course I opted to sit down and watch it. Since I hadn't heard about the movie, then I didn't know what to expect from director Tim Kirkby.

As it turned out, then Tim Kirkby's movie "Last Looks" sort of fell short of entertaining me. The storyline was just simply too slow paced and uneventful. Sure, the acting performances in the movie were good and the character gallery was colorful and detailed, but the storyline itself was just slow and rather mundane. So it made for inadequate entertainment for me.

Despite of having a rather good cast ensemble, with the likes of Mel Gibson, Morena Baccarin, Charlie Hunnam, Clancy Brown, Rupert Friend, Dominic Monaghan, Josh McDermitt and such on the cast list, then the movie was just a drag to sit through. The slow pacing of the narrative and the fact that I didn't really care about the events in the storyline made it particularly excruciating.

Good acting performances from the cast ensemble, though, I will say that much. But it just wasn't enough to make up for the shortcomings of the storyline.

This is not a crime mystery that I would recommend you waste your time, money or effort on.

My rating of "Last Looks" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

Mel is back!
frank-liesenborgs28 December 2021
And Charlie Hunnam has never been gone. Ex-LAPD cop Charlie Waldo (Charlie Hunnam) descends from his hill where he retired in order to investigate a high-profile murder. TV Actor Alastair Pinch (Mel Gibson) stands accused of murdering his wife, Monica. The plot and storyline are very smooth. This movie never gets boring. And we are witnessing the rebirth of Mel Gibson. Finally he delivers again. Charlie Hunnam never disappoints. What an acting performance. Where the story lacks originality, the acting never fails. The movie is fast paced and funny. A well-deserved 7/10 for never getting bored to death!

Makes no sense at all
stevelivesey6714 February 2022
Looks and feels like decently budgeted hollywood movie with a great cast. It's not.

They seem to have gone for a modern day Chinatown vibe with Tarantinoesque touches to make it cooler. They failed.

It's just a badly written, poorly cast car crash. AVOID.

Maybe not a classic but surprisingly good
mcummings-8909228 November 2022
I hadn't heard about this film until I put it on today and I must say I was pleasantly surprised going in blind. If you enjoy Guy Ritchie films or rian Johnson's knives out then you will likely live this. The casting and acting is perfect with both Charlie Hunam amd Mel Gibson having great fun as aloof characters piecing together an inter woven murder mystery with lots of twists that keep you intrigued and guessing. The location is perfect for the film too being almost exclusively set in Hollywood the film can lean on the weird and wacky sub culture which exists and poke fun when needed.

Overall this is a fun murder mystery film that seems to have flown under the radar.

Pretty silly, but not in a comical way, in a mediocre, this is going nowhere, way...
imseeg7 January 2022
The bad: completely silly and not credible role by Mel Gibson, who (for whatever reason) has got a terrible fake "English" accent.

The story is going nowhere and has got little to none credibility either.

Not funny, while it apparently is suppose to be funny. Not thrilling. Not suspenseful. Simply NOTHING...

Not any good? Well, the first 10 minutes seemed promising. The acting aint all bad. But this movie simply implodes into nothingness...

Mel steal a good show
loulou199229 December 2021
Wow, while most of Hollywood is trying hard to destroy Mel Gibson he is proving strongly why he can't be taken down. Great performance by a great actor. He has seriously turned into SEAN Connery more he ages.... Well made film, kinda made me think of Fletch with many great moments... Don't let judgement cloud your mind here.

Good Hollywood whodunnit movie.
deloudelouvain14 February 2022
The last movies I watched with Mel Gibson were not great but in Last Looks he actually did a decent job for once. Charlie Hunnam, eye candy for the women apparently, was also enjoyable to watch. Throughout the whole movie the acting was good and that from the whole cast. The story is a bit mysterious, a bit Noir which is normally not really the genre I enjoy a lot, with a slight pinch of humor. It's not fast paced but the story is intriguing enough to keep your attention for the entire duration. Better than I thought it would be, good enough to watch once.

Slow, and silly
oldtraff28 December 2021
Well what can one say about Gibson playing a old English actor, with a drinking problem, I've no doubt Gibson based his character on Peter O' Toole, My Favourite Year, Hunnam, has gone from potential A-lister, to B-movie actor within a couple of years. I watched 40 mins, with very little happening, once i started asking myself why am i watching this, that's when i quit, it is what it is.

Good
iliic27 December 2021
The movie is not bad at all.

Very good performance by Hunman and Gibson.

Very slow at the beginning but it's getting more and more interesting as the story unreveals.

But the sound... One of the most annoying sound experience in a very long time. Not because the music is bad, but because the volume levels are so uneaven. Dialogs are quiet, then loud, then quiet, music almost always is much louder than any dialogs.

I couldn't watch it without headphones. Just impossible if you like your neighbours and want to understand what the dialogs in the movie are at the same time.

Needs a better script.
radhrh29 December 2021
What we have here is a bog standard gumshoe flick with a few quirky characters thrown in to spice things up. A solid B list cast support the two main players while Mel Gibson steals the show. The staging is adequate and cinematography bland with a TV movie asthenic. The plot is generic with the usual twists but nothing to write home about but the big let down is the script. This movie would've really benefited from some snappy dialogue, some wise cracks and pithy one liners. Instead the script is dull and lifeless which is a shame as the foundations are solid.

A good not pretentious detective movie.

Mel Gibson's done good in minor roles and he was the main interest in this movie.

An ex LAPD cop is reached by a former lover to help a famous actor acused of murdering his wife. The plot is simple without great surprises and nice to follow.

Sorry Mel .. I love you but.. I have to do this.

This is complete rubbish from beginning to end. Idiotic and super silly characters and an idiotic plot. Oh, did I mention the dialog? That is of course completely idiotic as well.

Absolutely nothing redeeming here. Mels British accent was surprisingly good, though. But this is not what we want to see Mel in. Please do another one where you are lethal and out of your mind. That is what suits you the best. Or just direct another Apocalypto.

Entertaining Whodunit
lafmyers2 January 2022
Hubby and I enjoyed this modern spin on an old-fashioned gumshoe mystery. Charlie Hunnam was great as a reluctant former detective, roped into leaving his minimalist existence to solve a Hollywood murder. Mel Gibson was perfectly campy as a British actor who plays a southern judge on TV. And little Sophi Fatu steals every scene she's in...absolutely adorable! This film felt more like the first episode of a new weekly series and I say that in a positive way. No blood and gore, no big explosions, no tedious car chases, no gratuitous sex scenes. It was just FUN and I'm cool with that.

They couldn't have found a bigger wuss.
bajaharley17 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've never seen a movie like this where the cop is such a wuss. This guy is afraid of his own shadow, not someone that I would trust to take out my trash let alone to protect and to serve. Charlie Hunnam plays Charlie Waldo, I've seen tougher women, hell I've seen tougher children than this guy. Mel Gibson plays. Alistair Pinch who supposedly killed his wife and as usual makes the movie tolerable, not good but tolerable. The whole world believes he killed his wife and the network hires this has been cop, Waldo, who is now a PI to prove otherwise. Could have been a good movie if they had used someone a little tougher in my opinion. After all law enforcement is supposed to be able to handle themselves. Unfortunately Waldo gets slapped around by everyone.

Worth the watch
supermellowcali28 December 2021
If you're going to watch something, this one's not a bad choice... a good story IMO- carried by a great cast and a crew who knew what they were doing- and it had enough distractions that I didn't know whodunnit until near the end Gibson was great but he's not the main character.

Where's Waldo? Nobody cares.
Top_Dawg_Critic3 January 2022
This film was an all around bore and such a waste of talent. The 110 min runtime felt like over 3 hours, with slow pacing, and long dragged out and unnecessary scenes. I've never read the novel, but what I saw here was the lamest whodunnit film I've seen in a long time. The genres labeled where Action, Crime and Mystery, and I struggled to find any one of them. There were characters that were irrelevant and pretty much filler and a waste of film. The story was nonsense, and the sluthing was infantile and illogical. The screenplay was riddled with plot and technical issues, and scenes felt unfinished and/or unnecessary. The writing and some of the dialogue felt lazy and sloppy. It's something I'd expect to see on Lifetime in one of those murder-mystery TV shows with no name actors. Mel Gibson shined and pulled off that drunken snob Brit accent with ease, and Hunnam was ok. I wanted to see more of Morena Baccarin in that smoke-show outfit. Most of the cast did their best to save this mess, but even with the cool soundtrack, this was a huge miss. It's a generous 6/10 from me, mostly because Gibson was the only entertainment in the entire film.

Columbo for Millenials?
robwilltaylor-7367228 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I randomly came across this and thought I'd give 'ol Mel the benefit of the doubt and was both pleasantly entertained and mystified as to what this was supposed to be. We're quickly introduced to Charlie Waldo (Hunnam) a once e'nfant terrible supercop who quit in disgrace, besmirching the good name of the LAPD in the process. Waldo now owns 100 things only, lives in a trailer and eschews a car for a racing bike and the bus.

His former lover, Lorena (Baccarin) comes to see him in a flashy car, offering him a first private eye case...that of Alistair Pinch, a boozy Englishman who is known as much for knocking out crew as his acting plaudits. Gibson is Pinch as one part self parody, another part hamming it up in the best traditions of the aging thesps who took roles in Murder Mystery TV during its peak in the 70's.

Pinch is accused of murdering his wife in a drunken blackout and his studio are looking to bring the once famous cop in to help prove his innocence.

No sooner is Waldo on the case than a number of oddballs are on HIS case trying to prevent him from taking it. From former cop colleagues (Clancy Brown) to rappers and gangland figures.

This leads to the first bizarre trait of the character... he is seemingly a really bad fighter, and likes getting beat up...a LOT! It also shows that Waldo is despised by the LAPD and somewhat of a celebrity to others.

Waldo is "adopted" by Pinch and his daughter and her Kindergarten teacher is a thirst trap personified and provides a good love/person of interest.

The stakes are raised with another death that hits Waldo hard and sets him onto his other seemingly defining trait. He is clearly dealing with a lot of rage leftover from his days as a cop leading to him crashing rich parties and going vengeful.

Soon the culprit is apparent in one of those "one more thing" type moments with a bizarre chase and finale that seemingly sets this as a proof of concept for a new Columbo/Magnum style movie series than a box office smash.

Indeed, the characters are in place by the end in terms of sex appeal, police contact, underworld figure with a hidden depth of heart and harpy lawyer who no doubt would grudgingly have to call on Waldo's services.

Hunnam is likeable and while some of the supporting cast don't get as much to do as their billing might suggest as a proof of concept this could be a very good career move for Hunnam and for a few once big names back into TV or Streaming movies. It's easy to imagine former Sons of Anarchy alum appearing like Ron Perlman for example... or more once big names taking a punt on appearing much as those Columbo villains always did.
