Back in S1 and S2, when Marius had skin in the game and he was running against the clock to pull off a con to save himself, the viewers were treated to a Marius that was likable and charming, but also equally manipulative and calculating. We were delighted in seeing Marius weaseling himself out of any situation, using his guile and cunning, and took pleasure in the Bernhardt's family turning to him whenever they had problems of their own.
But now that Marius is free of the Bernhardts, and they of him, the series is losing any reason for us to care about any of the two. Between Lizzie's yawn-inducing wine tasting con, Taylor losing his police badge, Julia's job hunting, and Lizzie's investigation into her family past, there really isn't any urgency or impetus for the plot points to move forward. Things just lazily and haphazardly unfold on screen, and we just accept them as viewers.
The few bright spots so far are the few moments where we see Marius's internal struggle with trying to leave his past life behind, but can't helping himself to be sucked up into another grand con. If this S3 has any chance of availing itself, I really hope that the rest of the series sets up a sequence of events that will send Marius on a path that forces him to make this decision once and for all.
