They mean well
MarktheGeezer29 January 2020
This is apparently a true story about a very kind and generous woman. However, the film, like so many Christian films, isn't very well made. The dialog is sometimes stilted and awkwardly delivered, the lighting is rough, and the main character has a bad wig. I thought the big reveal would be that she was a cancer patient, but there was a haircut scene near the end, so I guess it was actually supposed to be her hair. Also, these Christian filmmakers seem confused about denominations. Mike attends a Protestant church with a married minister, but he has a rosary and Catholic art in his house. They cared about this story and wanted to remember a special lady, so I don't want to be too harsh. I watched this because I knew somebody who was in it and I guess I was just expecting something that didn't look so homespun.

dont be too critical of the production value
steve_w-1075828 December 2019
Yes this is not the kind of production quality we have become accustom to, but, what a sweet show, in part, because it is a not about production but the story. Be prepared to be asking the question "couldn't have been done as a quality motion picture," but also be prepared to have your heart strings pulled at..... What a beautiful woman, wish we all had a neighbor like her, or even better, could be a neighbor like her.

Um... only watch if you're Christian
dbh8502 January 2020
It's a faith-based film. If you don't like them, you likely won't care for this one. That said, it's probably the best (least ghastly) faith-based film I've seen.

The acting was good enough, considering their short (or no) experience and the obvious low budget. I have NO problem with low budget films. In fact, I rather enjoy them - I feel like I might just be seeing early work of an unknown master. So I give them a chance and don't much care if they don't have funds for all the best stuff.

That said, who the hell let JoAnn F. Peterson wear that wig?!?!!! It looked absurd and was quite distracting. Pretty much any person you find walking down the sidewalk could find a better wig for her. It made it a bit hard to look at her, which is a shame. She is new to acting and I thought she did a good job.

It's a sweet story and just the thing for a particular kind of Christian. But if you're looking for depth or complexity, this isn't your story.

Read the Book, Skip the Movie

Clearly, this was a low budget production. And that would be ok. But aside from Jeremy Gladen as Mike Tourville, it's abysmal. I stayed with the movie until the end to write a review. But although people want a feel good storyline I think many will drop out in the first 10 minutes. It starts with Astrid's wig.

My sense is Dean Cain lent his name and his salary in its production out of his own generosity, because he won't get an Emmy nod for this movie.

And a better wig for Astrid. Please.

How remarkable if true
bkoganbing27 September 2020
Watching this film I was reminded of the old Millionaire series where Marvin Miller kept giving out million dollar checks every week to some lucky soul to do with as they please. Seeing A Promise To Astrid I was thinking how remarkable if true.

Then I see the film was based on a novel and then it was like the old series. Soon enough old John Beresford Tipton would leave his magnificent estate Silverstone for the poorhouse.

Thus it would be for our old lady protagonist Astrid who is constantly looking for people and causes to give money to. The cast whom none of you will know save for Dean Cain from he Lois&Clark series is sincere but working on a project that defies logic.

Charity has its limits.

Low budget feel good movie.
sethadams-3013813 January 2020
For what it is (low budget and a Christian film) it's rather good in my opinion. Not being a Christian myself I'm one of the rare types that still love the books and movies simply for the feel good story telling and those stories about overcoming the odds against you. Astrid was very clearly an amazing woman who touched many lives. If you're looking for great production quality go elsewhere, but if you are the type more interested in just seeing a story of a real life person that will make you smile or tear up this is a good option for you.

Great movie you will learn about payin forward
mstottsy15 January 2020
I watched the movie and then read the book. Yes there was alot of diiferences. However I think that is the way it is most movies based on true stories. Hollywood changes some of the story line to fit into the making of the movie. The young lady playing Cindy Is from the Urkain so her acting maybe a little different than what we are used to in the US. If you read the book the actor portraying and Astrid had a lot in common. I sure hope it will eventually be put on DVD soon so I can give it to friends. I have already passed the book to a couple of my friends. I watched the movie with an open mind with lesson we are supposed to learn from Astrid. She was a special lady with a sweet and kind spirit. We should all follow her example

Clearly not a big budget movie, but it didn't need it. Great story, good acting. Even the wig was perfect. Worth the time.

Good movie. . .

I'm in Springfield Mass and they make references to Massachusetts and Mass Mutual in our town so I wonder if it supposed to be in Springfield? Acting was good and it's actually a cute movie.

Not a total waste of time
marilynstauff5 January 2020
The story was good, the acting was okay. I wish they would have had a bigger budget to do better production or someone who knows how to do a lot with a little.

Shed many tears
Meme5728 June 2021
This is a sweet endearing movie about what God wants us to do for others. Actually seek out the needs of others and help all you can. Brings so much joy right back to you.it is a budget movie but the message is clear. I started crying the first 5 minutes and did until the end. Happy and sad! I recommend it if you want to be uplifted in our crazy world right now.
