Such heaviness
Bgappl0712 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie moves along slowly with nothing really shocking and that is where and how it hits you in your gut it is a terrible tale - not solely because of the prostitution but because it all really becomes so mundane in it's savage repetition. The three main roles of joy precious and the Madame are well played What I have difficulty understanding is that at almost the end of the movie joy contacts the Austrian authorities wants to expose the Madame seems like they're going to work with her and then all of a sudden the police come pick her up and proceed to deport her what happened there??

Worth to watch. Is not a sex movie
manugw2 June 2019
Show the inside story of how a prostitution ring that exploit African women is managed in Europe (Austria). The film show the raw realities this poor women face without gory excesses and alluring sex scenes. This is not a sex movie but a fiction about a pitiful everyday reality with a particular outlook. It has also a surprising ending that leaves room to inner debate.

I watch it with my wife, but we were a little bit disappointed with that end but the core of that was great, how joy managed the situation at the end and how this crazy world show to us his creepy and occult true..

What was that?
Pro_Viewer26 May 2019
OK, I watched it all the way thru and just kept saying, WHY? I understand being trapped into prostitution and have to work your way out... There is way too many plot holds and things that don't make any sense. I'm giving it a 6 out of 10 Stars because I know some work went into this. Maybe I will watch the ending again to try and figure what the hell happened! LOL, No spoilers but, watch the throwing money around and say WTF?

Good watch

Pro_Viewer, hopefully for you and others who may not understand the end of this film. I do. I am not just Nigerian but I was born and grew up in Benin City. Basically, Joy returns home, of course she does not find a viable job so we see her at a party. Now she is holding some money along with other people. These sort of people in parties, usually change high denomination of naira notes for lower ones. The party goer then gets to spray this lower denomination notes to the celebrants. It is a Nigerian thing to spray guests/hosts at their parties. Typically someone like Joy will get some money for this sort of service. Nevertheless, it should be noted that such gain is little or nothing. Joy knows this and realizes her existence back at home will be fraught with continued hardship, not forgetting her daughter is still in Austria. She approaches a man spraying money at the party (obviously someone connected and rich) and pleads with him to remember her. The man promises to sponsor her next trip to Europe but reminds her it will be done in 2 days time but she needs to swear to an oath again. Hence the same cycle of prostitution is about to repeat itself again in Joy's life. Sad tale.

Hard Knock Life
kosmasp5 February 2020
Everyone has to earn their money, live their lives and so forth. Some of the stories of people doing just that are more interesting than others. Some of the hardships are more worth to follow than others. If you don't mind the context of how or what our main characters are doing, you should be overall fine. Still the drama unfolds at a slow pace which might not work to everyones favor or wish.

Having said that, there is attention to detail (you decide if that's good or bad) and the story does work overall. Don't expect anything fancy or flashy though

Let me explain the End of this movie
lavolteria4 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
To everybody that Is confused on how the movie ended and how she got all the cash, let me explain. That was a flashback of Joy when she was still in Nigeria (before she travelled to Austria). She was working as a fake cash seller. So in Nigeria parties/weddings or events you see a lot of the guest spreading fake cash as a form of celebration. So you saw that the lady at the party was buying the cash from Joy. so at the end, Joy gave some of her earnings to a connection guy to get her to Europe

Utter Trash

This movie is best avoided! It relies on a plot that's as original as sliced bread and a narration that's as dreary as watching paint dry.

Story about Survival...
bruceharms27 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like this movie is very misunderstood. It stays true in potraying some realities regarding human trafficking and if you think about it has happened in many different forms for a thousand years. It also gives me a realization that it is all about power.

SPOILER ALERT What i think that is very beautifull and also scary there are NO heroes, NO rising of the ashes, no GOOD or BAD. Only the constant hustle, looking for an edge and at the end of the day MONEY.

Joy is always looking around for an opportunity, eveywhere she goes she is working hard and is very tough and by the end you think she would learn something. But you as a viewer learn something, that Joy is going to do everything you just witnessed... AGAIN!

Beliefs, life, survival.
EdgarST3 August 2020
Excellent film on the vicious circle of prostitution. That's the core of the movie: even if you get out of the business, something so intense happened that you will never be the same, and "virtue" will ellude you, even in subliminal ways.

But on the other hand this is a story about Nigerian women who go to work as prostitutes in Austria and get into debt, after making an oath with a juju priest to enforce the contract that the women "sign": it is a cultural bind, a process of enslavement from which there is no escape. For you may become "free" after paying your debt to a madam, but at home your soul is still a prisoner in the form of a charm that the juju priest keeps with him, until a relative breaks the spell, after the debt is settled...

Beliefs, life, survival. A very good film, made by a German filmmaker of Iranian origins. Many awards in Venezia, Chicago, Sevilla, London and other international events. Highly Recommended.

Sad tale of the exoitatation of poor African women by their own people.
fionacahill2120 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This was a riveting watch, a very realistic portrayal of what young women duped and tricked into leaving Africa to work in Europe find themselves actually doing , which is Prostitution on the streets or in brothels to pay off exorbitant debts to Madames who profess to care about them. We see Joy go through the horrors of paying off her debt and finally breaking out of the hold of the traffickers ...but then she is deported , sent back to Nigeria without her child and we see her living in poverty again selling party cash at events. This is done by street vendors and earns very little , they sell small denomination notes for people to throw around at weddings etc .. At the very end Joy approaches a wealthy guy who is obviously a sex trafficker and asks him to again help her out & get her back to Austria. She is going back into the cycle of sex working and paying off a huge debt , she didn't take the opportunity to stay in Austria and give evidence against the traffickers and so she was deported , sent back to no prospects only to start all over again . It was a sad & depressing ending but a realistic one.
