A crashing beginning.
cruise014 June 2019
Fear the Walking Dead

5.01 (4 out of 5 stars).

The season premiere starts off with a bang. Alycia and her people getting involved in a plane. With a little known about what caused the crash. Besides they were travelling to help and find a mysterious guy named Logan. Which his people need help. Then, there is new characters like a group of teens who aid to help. But are wondering why they are so eager to help strangers.

There is still a lot of bashing and escaping from the undead. Characters come across a new territory. Were there are many warning signs with the undead tied together to form a barricade. Or the decapitated heads hanging from the trees. Could there be a new threat to the remaining survivors?

Good start to season 5
ninjaboyballer3 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a really nice improvement over season 2 and the back half of season 4. The color is pretty great. What i mean by that is that our characters have more color to them and that color fades into gray background. It's actually kind of beautiful. The 4 news characters were really interesting. Logan seems like he could be a good new threat and the kids(except for the sister) are not annoying for the most part. The dialogue has also improved and sounds really interesting at some points during the episode. I also really liked the stuff they did with the walkers like tying them up by their intestines and hanging their heads on trees. That is just next level brutal. Plus the walker that Al shoved on the crowbar had something to do to where Rick was taken in the helicopter, so I can't wait to see where that leads. Also Daniel is back baby! I've been waiting for a while for him to come back and I am so happy he is coming back.

Overall this is a really solid premiere with interesting new characters, new setting, and better dialogue.

Final rating: 8/10

Pretty confusing
gabriel-804 June 2019
Maybe I'm experienzing early alzheimers, but what the .... was going on in the beginning of this episode. Our main "protagonists" crash in a plane? Now where did that come from?! Confused me. Otherwise the episode had no interesting storylines what so ever. I was really bored. A hint at the end? Fine, but that doesn't make up for a truly boring episode in all. Hopefully the show will get better as I think the previous season was rather good.

Warning: Spoilers
Only real fans of Walking Dead universe can recognize the symbol at the end of the episode. That exact symbol was on the helicopter that took Rick in season 9 of the Walking Dead

Spoiler-free review: Season 5 looks promising!
joszac2 June 2019
I had the chance to watch four episodes of season 5 in advance. The premiere is a promising start and this season is going to be decent, I can feel it.

While episode 3 and 4 are my favorites by far, episode 1 builds up quite a lot. Some viewers might find the first two episodes to be slow - but I promise you that you'll be rewarded. The storytelling feels better and I enjoyed the introduction of a bunge of new characters.

Our main group is back in action and I'm a bit sad to see that the crazy siblings Sarah and Wendell didn't make it on the season 5 poster. These two are awesome and fun to watch. I hope to see a lot more of them in the future!

The group is still on their mission to save and help people in need. I think it's an awesome task, somewhat risky, but still awesome. The dynamics between the characters are great and the actors are doing a good job. I really like this group, everyone is likeable and kinda cool. In some shows it annoys me that there are so many characters I hate (not even the villains) - so it's refreshing to have this bunge of cool people.

Unfortunately I can't spoil anything big, but be prepared for some awesome returns during these four episodes and a very interesting aspect that will affect both, TWD and FTWD. Loving it!

Weak Start but a Strong Ending
erikoldland3 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode starts off with lots of action. I personally thought it wasn't very interesting. The dialogue was lousy too. Although, Morgan has redeeming speech at the end of the episode. The end of the episode also hints at a lot of interesting parts of the show that will come in later episodes.

Season 5 off to a Decent Start after the Mess that was Season 4
scottmannen122 June 2019
I didn't watch Season 4 and I "think" that I watched season 3, but it was so blase' that I honestly don't remember if I finished Season 3. Right when they started exterminating my favourite characters is when I decided to hit the eject button. In fact I didn't even make it to the episode where they killed off the protagonist Nick. I remember seeing the preview for the next episode where Nick was to die and I said "Ok, they just wrote my favourite character off the show! I'm out". I did just that, and that's where I left off, having never seen the episode where he was killed off. After that I read online or in the news that they were to kill his mother off too! She was the second best actress on the show!

So here I am deciding to return at the start of Season 5, having missed all of 4. I heard 4 was a total mess so maybe I made the right decision? Things seem to have changed. There are new characters and others are gone. I recognize our Kung-Fu peaceful crossover character from TWD. I recognize the journalist and of course our leading lady who is actually a good actress that brings a good performance to the show for her part. The gunslinger cowboy I recognize also. I have no idea about any of the others that seem to have joined the group. With Kung-fu leading the group it appears he has them out doing good deeds to help people? I think that is really dumb and it's lucky his altruism hasn't got the entire group killed yet.

Episode 1 seems to be taking place in some kind of nuclear zone? Perhaps it is a biological danger zone? It's one of those 2, but nuclear makes sense to me because the entire planet is already a no-go unsafe biological hazard. The nuclear aspect is a good direction for the show to take! Perhaps we will have to deal with some mutated zombies with special abilities! Wouldn't that be a refreshing change to hav3 something new and clever written into the story along those lines? We can only hope the answer is yes, and that they fired the S4 writers!

The premier episode ended with a mystery which did a good job of being interesting, mysterious and hooking the viewers interest for episode 2! Well I have to give this episode a solid 7.5/10. It was interesting, action packed and full of tense zombie sequences that we all love! I highly suggest watching this episode, especially if you skipped last season such as I did! Off to watch #2 so I will review that episode next!

Awesome episode, looks promising and better then season 4
sashafranchuk4 June 2019
I'm not going to spoil anything that happens in this episode but if you enjoyed season 3 and hated season 4 this episode gave me hope that Season 5 as a whole will be an awesome season, so much has happened in one episode and the first 20/25 mins kept me on the edge of my seat. I really think that the show has changed directions and won't make the same mistake they did in season 4. I can't wait for episode 2

A review of the "Fear the Walking Dead" Season 5 premiere
ericrnolan5 June 2019
"Fear the Walking Dead" has devolved. It's fallen a long way from its early years as an earnest, deadly serious prequel to "The Walking Dead." (I, for one, really liked the first season's creative mix of slow-burn horror and family drama, and I loved the ambitious, milieu-exploring apocalypse-in-progress stories of subsequent seasons.) Today, we've reached the point where the show has become so slapdash and campy that you have to wonder whether its creators take it seriously at all.

I'm sorry to say this, but the Season 5 premiere felt like pretty amateurish stuff. Its writing, directing and acting (in some places) were really, really spotty. Its early action set-piece involving a plane crash, for example, was choppy, confusing and awkwardly staged. The plotting and dialogue were ... poor.

Even the premiere's marketing was goofy. Its television ads seemed like an intentional self-parody - like maybe a Saturday Night Live skit lampooning zombie shows. (See below.) The poster is a mess too - even if the center image's suggestion that John Dorie is a gunslinging Christ figure is pretty damned nifty.

With all of this said, it may surprise you that I still liked the episode well enough, and I'll still watch the show. I'd rate the premiere a 7 out of 10, because "Fear the Walking Dead" still has its merits. I can think of three reasons in particular why I still had fun with the premiere, and why I'll still tune in next Sunday.

First, some of the characters are terrific. I'll always love Victor Strand (Colman Domingo). I really like Dorie (Garret Dillahunt) and his mild-mannered girlfriend, June (Jenna Elfman), and Charlie (Alexa Nisenson) is the kind of child character that typically grows on me. (Let's hope Dorie's posture in the poster isn't a hint about his death.) I still like Morgan, because Lennie James is always a pleasure to watch, even if I don't share the immense zeal of his legions of fans. (The writers need to do more with him beyond his weird, vaguely "Kung Fu," born-again altruism. I know he's supposed to be the Eastern philosophy guy, but his dialogue sometimes makes him come off like a stereotypical, nattering Evangelical.)

The second reason I'll stay with this show is that its stories move along quickly. There are no static, Negan-centered endless epics here, like there are on this show's plodding progenitor.

The third reason is this - "Fear the Walking Dead" has always hatched the most creative story ideas. Whatever problems the show might have developed over time with character, dialogue or plot details, the basic story concepts have always been really damned inventive. (They consistently offer much more than "The Walking Dead's" two boiler-plate plot arcs - group-vs.-group or refuge-with-a-hidden-danger.) This season looks like it will be no exception. There are two major reveals in this episode's closing minutes. One connects Season 5 with past seasons of "Fear the Walking Dead," while another is a tantalizing hint about greater forces in the "Walking Dead" universe.

Oh! One more thing! There is an important new character here played by the terrific Matt Frewer. If you're a true zombie horror fan, then you'll recognize him as none other than Frank, from Zack Snyder's superb, unfairly reviled 2004 "Dawn of the Dead" remake. And if you're and 80's kid like I am, then you might remember him as the original Max Headroom - from both the Coca-Cola ads and excellent but short-lived 1987 sci-fi series. That's some pretty fun casting - and the guy is a good actor.

I watched the first episode with AMC Premiere and it is a good episode! Alicia is a badass and I love John so much.

Also, the end of the episode has to do with the Rick Grimes movies! I can't wait to continue watching this season.

S5.E1 - Good Episode to Start the Season [7.5/10]
panagiotis19933 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S5. E1) My Reaction / Review for Fear The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 1 ''Here to Help'': Season 4 was good and I gave it a rating of 7.5/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Did an accident happen? What is going on? Where are they? Where is Victor? So once again the team members are not together? That sucks, I hope they will be reunited soon or this is dumb happening all over again. So the team still focuses on helping complete strangers just like season 4, that's so dumb. The team wants to find some guy named Logan, ok. Adding these kids to the team just makes the group too big. I hope the kids will be removed soon. Im so happy the kids left. Seems like Logan is the new villain? Overall a decent episode, my rating is 7.5/10.

An action packed and great premiere, looks promising
Holt3443 June 2019
The episode introduces four new characters, three of them being good guys and the villain, Logan who we knew of from season 4 but never got to see. He's played brilliantly by Matt Frewer, an fine actor and he plays the character with such perfection leaving me wanting more. My opinion is that it was a great season premiere, setting the atmosphere and immersion with also bringing new storylines and old ones back with the crew back together, it was nicely directed with great action.

The ensemble cast did great in this episode from acting to stunts; but Lennie James, Alycia and Matt Frewer were the ones that shined throughout the episode, delivering great performances.

After an alright season we get an episode filled with what made that season good and focusing on that, following up with the trucker story and the group's goal to save people makes for some unique opportunities if done right and from the look of the trailer it seems promising to be as great as the third season.

Morgan !!!
pariisaap13 October 2021
Morgan is an annoying good man . He drive every one insane.wasting time to help people he doesn't know!!!

He left 3 kids alone to find a man that he even don't know he is good or bad.!

He tried hard to save an evil woman who killed people all the time! Does it wise trying to save a killer and endanger other people because of that? That is really ridiculous. This excessive goodness make me sick.

I like Al but i don't get what she want to do with those stupid tapes!

Could have been better, could have been worse, it probably will be
Rob-O-Cop3 June 2019
Still got some interesting characters in this clustermuck of a show, Strand, John Dorie, Althea (maybe) and Morgan are all fun interesting characters when given good material to work with and that's always the problem, garbage in garbage out. That said, Logan introduces an interesting angle that we haven't seen investigate in the rush to make this easy action killing ''entertainment". No room for thought provoking here. Logan doesn't want to fight, he just want's what belongs to him. Is there any space for peaceful solutions in this aggressive world TWD insist on feeding us?

I'm guessing no but as always they dangle a carrot of promise before seriously disappointing us. It's probably not going to be any different this season.

Good to see the paid commenters got another round of income earning work to pretend this show is way better than it actually is. Hey if enough people say it it must be true. Better than being unemployed and homeless though, which is where some of the writers should be.

Awful.
j57j11 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm really not the type to screech "bots!" or "shills!" but I am absolutely convinced that the majority of these reviews have to be written by AMC staff. The writing on the show is just too awful to believe this many people can think positively about it.

To actually speak on the episode, it's just bad. Not even good, Z Nation kind of bad. Just abandon the show, no entertainment value left kind of awful.

After season 3 I had huge hopes for it. I was even convincing friends who gave up in the first two seasons. "No really, it's good now! You have to watch it!"

And then for some bizarre, unknown reason, they nuke the whole show and turn it into non stop reruns of the Morgan lecture hour. As if that hasn't been done enough for half a dozen seasons on the main show. Almost immediately, the writing quality absolutely tanked.

I stuck it out through season 4. Barely. I remember one episode where they were poisoned or something and needed some alcohol based nonsense to counteract it or they're going to die. So there just so happens to be a tanker full of the stuff in the parking lot. BUT, during an ensuing fight someone accidentally shoots a hole in it.

Mind you, if doesn't explode or anything. They just sit there and watch for the presumably 5 or so hours it would take the tanker to empty from a bullet hole. Nobody thinks to grab a glass, a bowl, even soak a shirt in it and squeeze it over their mouth. No. They just resign themselves to death as they grow old watching a tanker empty in a parking lot through a bullet hole.

That's the kind of writing quality we're talking about here. Seriously, it's not just overlooking some silly character trait. It's such lazy writing that calling it amateur would be giving too much credit.

Being a glutton for punishment apparently, I decide to give season 5 a chance. It's worse...

You can literally see the actors fighting to get their lines out because of how ridiculous it is.

Go back a couple of seasons and pick one random episode. Then watch this one or the next one. Not only will you see the enormous difference in writing quality, but you'll see the difference in acting by those who are still on the show. It's most obvious with Strand especially.

I'm not blaming them, I don't think I could get this drivel out with a straight face myself so I give them credit for trying with the garbage they are given.

Obviously I'm giving up on the show. There's nothing left. I'm just absolutely baffled that first of all, a team of writers could put this out and think it's good. And second of all, that anyone watching it can actually think it's good. It's gone beyond subjective taste now. It's just objectively bad.

Can we just kill Morgan
ghcheese3 June 2019
I'm sorry. But I'm getting tired of Morgan. Tooo Moody. Today he doesn't kill anyone. Tomorrow he kills everything. No happy middle. Look what he did. I knew what was happening almost immediately. He's trying to fix the light on the neighbors porch while his house is burning down. I think the show would be better if the group as a whole through Morgan to the Dead.

He just wanted them to get them as far away as possible so he could take over their denim factory. They children flee in fear. Meanwhile, Al investigates a strange walker wearing body armor. As she records it on her camera, she is captured another in the same armor.

As the rest of the group plans to retake the factory, Strand investigates a man on one of Al's tapes who has a plane they can use. To Strand's shock, the man is Daniel Salazar.

"Fear the Walking Dead," Season 5, Episode 1, "Here to Help," kicks off with a sense of urgency and purpose as the group embarks on a mission to help those in need. The episode introduces us to a new group of survivors, including a plane crash victim named Logan, who seeks the group's help in finding his friends. As they set out on their journey, they encounter various challenges, including a horde of walkers and a mysterious distress call.

One of the key themes of the episode is the idea of community and the importance of helping others in times of crisis. This theme is exemplified by the group's willingness to risk their lives to save strangers, highlighting the best aspects of human nature even in the face of overwhelming danger.

The episode is also notable for its tense and action-packed sequences, particularly the scenes involving the walkers and the group's efforts to rescue the survivors. Warning: Spoilers
5x1 Rating: 8.0/10 way better then the last episode

Storyline: In the woods, Dylan and Max hunt a deer. However, the gunshot attracts a walker. Max tries to shoot it but the gun is jammed and they start to panic when suddenly, a plane crashes through the trees and debris cuts the walker in half. They investigate the crash site and notice burning boxes with the take what you need message scribbled on. As walkers surround them, Alicia emerges using a propeller to kill him, telling the kids they are here to help.

Inside the plane, the kids wake up Morgan, who is strapped into his seat and has to wrestle with a walker. John helps him and leaves to find June. Morgan tells them they got there after hearing a message on radio from someone named Logan and asks Dylan to help him save Luciana, who's pinned by a pole, while he kills walkers outside.

In the overturned cockpit, June and Althea wake up with walkers clawing at them from the windows. John shoots the undead as Alicia uses a propeller to take out the walkers. Morgan stops and says she needs to treat her hands, which are severely cut. She kills more as Morgan gets a radio message from Logan. He tells him they're on their way.

Alicia quickly hammers down a steel wire barrier around the crash site to slow down the walkers and give their friends more time. They take them out one by one as John frees June from the cockpit. Meanwhile, Al radios Strand to tell him they crashed and instructs him to watch her tape labeled "Skidmark". She explains the man on it has a small plane and he'll have to use it to fly over and get them.

Back in the plane, June eventually makes it into the fuselage to look at Luciana and her impaling. Outside, Alicia realizes they are in a high-radiation area. Althea is attacked by a walker with black armor and a helmet on and impales it on a spike. She and John then grab hacksaws, which they use to cut Luciana free. They place her on a stretcher and Althea hands Alicia her weapon.

Alicia takes the lead but a truck rushes in with Annie driving. Max says it's their sister so they all pack in the van and leave. On the road, Annie says walkers are the least of their problems. "You have no idea where you landed, do you?" She asks them mysteriously.

Elsewhere, Strand and Charlie ride in Al's armored truck side by side with Sarah and Wendell's truck towards the others. Back in the van, Annie says she stays away from this area but got stuck there recently. Morgan says they're trying to help a man they met on the radio named Logan, who claims his place got surrounded. Annie stops the van and says the place is worse than it seems.

They arrive at a gate comprised of walkers chained together with their own intestines. The tree above them has walker heads hanging from the branches. Annie says they're all over the area and she refuses to drive through. Morgan says they'll walk and Annie reminds him he doesn't even know this guy, but Morgan still wants to try. Annie warns he better be worth it as Alicia cuts down the fence and they ride on through.

Later, the group arrives at a truck stop to look for Logan but find the place empty. They carry Luciana inside as John and Al inspect the place. Morgan tries to reach Logan on the radio to no avail. Meanwhile, June prepares to help Luciana. Dylan asks her why people would need toys and what trucks do. She explains to him about Clayton's mission to keep hope alive with boxes and how they want to keep his legacy alive.

Alicia reports that no one's here and that something must be up. Annie gets spooked and tells her brothers they need to leave now. Alicia tries to calm them down but Max points his rifle at her and warns them to leave soon. The kids leave as June pulls the pole out of Luciana's shoulder.

Elsewhere, Logan arrives at the denim factory. He heads inside and finds supplies, beds, movie requests, and Althea's tapes. Back at the truck stop, Alicia and Al lock up the place as Luciana recovers. Suddenly, Morgan gets a radio call from Logan. He says he is the "L" in "C&L" which is the logo on all of the trucking equipment. He admits he never shared Clayton's world view and he made them fly to the furthest truck stop he knew of so they could take over without a fight. Alicia reminds him they crashed a plane to help him and Logan says he is just trying to reclaim what's his instead of hurting them. He cuts off communication and walks away.

That night, Sarah and Wendell drink outside the factory and lament their failure. Charlie says she can find a way in and Strand vows to get the mill back. He wishes he was on the plane but vows to get on the next one and reunite with the rest of the group.

Back at the truck stop, Al tells Morgan they need to return to the plane to investigate something and he promises they will go in the morning. Meanwhile, John tells June he's optimistic about the future, claiming they have all the luck in the world. She says he helped her when she thought no one could, so they might be able to help people in the future.

Outside, Alicia kills walkers to get out her frustration until Morgan stops her. She reminds him they could have died today and that Luciana almost did. "We can't make up for the past if we're dead," she says before telling him her mother did so much to make sure they were still standing. Morgan promises he's not done helping people and will try to find the kids again. "The things that we have done, the things that I have done, it should be hard. Maybe that's how we know we're on the right track," he says. Alicia claims that it shouldn't be that hard, leaving him in thought.

Elsewhere, Strand watches one of Al's tapes and discovers the man with the second plane is Daniel Salazar. He pauses the frame and stares in disbelief at his old acquaintance.

Meanwhile, Al returns to the crash site in the rain to find the armored walker she fended off. She pulls off its mask, kills it and starts recording. She discovers the outfit has some wires on and finds some laminated documents with maps with a three-circled symbol and the initials CRM written on it. She radios Morgan to tell him there's a story here until she's tased from behind. She falls down unconscious as the mysterious person covered in the same armor stands over her.

The music makes me think of ZNation. Now we have John and June in an Old West town; we have radiated zombies and a dying nuclear reactor person. We have Luciana making drug jokes, and a zombie road block. It's ok though, because ZNation was a spectacular zombie show.

Maybe you can hire... The Z Team!
evoapps5 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This show has slowly slipped into a formulaic happy place reminiscent of the The A Team, an episodic show with few overarching storylines, and fewer references to previous season's events and characters.

The opening scene was even drawn to a close with the crew stuffing themselves into a van while Morgan proclaimed his dislike for flying planes. An actual ode to Mr.T's B.A. Baracus. Wow.

At least they're still using radios, though, right?

Zombie Fonzie meet Zombie Shark
diehls-080273 June 2019
The fundamental objective of sci-fi is the suspension of disbelief. This version of TWD franchise has pushed the limits of the premise very, very far. The thinly developed (read: both unlikable/unbelievable) characters keep making choices and are capable of doing things that are unlikely, but even worse, kind of stupid. But never mind that. I'll be accused of some bias, yadda, yadda, whatever. Bottom line: they've gone too far for too long with questionable characters who make choices unlikely given their history and possessing skills or new abilities that are inconsistent with their backstory.... no suspension of disbelief = fail. All that's left is a soap opera. A poorly written and acted soap opera.

Really!
coronitasc3 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Just like so many other people this is one of my favorite shows but when you start making characters stupider than they already were come on! Danger everywhere and she goes out on her own in the pouring rain to look for what ever it is she's looking for and she sets in the rain even though her camera is completely covered in plastic to keep from getting wet she decides it's safe to set in the dark rain and open up papers to read video and they start getting soaked but it didn't occur to her to go back to her waiting running truck to read in the dry safety of said truck? How long have they been living like this and fighting to survive, because some of them seem to have just jumped out of season one and are just not aware that everything and everyone is dangerous. Please don't turn it into a superhero/Soap opera.

He's dangerous for many reasons. Mostly for getting people killed. Anybody remember Jimbo? All Jimbo wanted to do is make beer, because beer is good, beer is essential. Well, everybody foolishly followed Morgy to General Hospital and Jimbo died. Thanks Morgy.

I could barely stay awake for this episode. Usually, I watch the whole thing, taking notes, playing guitar to keep me awake so I could laugh at the ridiculousness of all these "experienced" survivors repeatedly doing stupid things. Not this time. Boredom followed boredom.

Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. 2 + 2 is 4. If you think it will be anything but 4, you my friend are insane. But these survivors keep doing stupid things. So, either they are insane, or the viewers who give this rubbish praise (10 stars, paid, or gullible viewers). The producers know exactly what they are doing, Manipulation. They figure they'll cater to the most common denominator. Give the people a bunch of halfway likable characters that can grow and change, some simpleton twists and turns, but don't make things too complicated, some people will drop out. They rely on the actors. The actors mostly do well. Except for Morgan. What kind of accent does he supposed to have?

Last season we followed a rag tag group of dirtbags, Cowboy 6 Shooter, Nurse with Multiple Names, Fashionable Haircut Al Swat truck videographer, Backstab Charlie Reform Project, Vultures, a hurricane out of nowhere, beer Jimbo, truckers Wheelchair and His Sis, Filty Woopy Zombie Wrangler, General Hospital, A promise to go onto another loser show The Walking Soap Opera only to be bait and switched at the last minute by Morgy The Loser Savior to go on some holy mission to save the people of the road with care packages.

And tonight's show ladies and gentleman, we see The Z Team (Z for Zero, not Zombie) going not only on another failed mission but a catastrophe. Oh my, what will our fearless leader Morgy do now.

I was almost bored from start to finish. first few minutes i was confused about wtf is happening? and no, it wasn't even exciting. but at this point i don't really care anymore ... last 5 seconds had a traditional cliffhanger, to get you into watching the next boring episode. no, i will not waste my time any further.
