Wonderful ending to a wonderful series
Snootz24 October 2021
Violet Evergarden is in my mind some of the best anime ever made. It's not for everyone. It's a slow-burner and very emotional. This movie is even moreso, with parts of it admittedly a bit too over the top in the emotional aspect. Yet it holds true to the story and has a very nice ending (be sure to watch to the end of the credits).

Before watching this movie I recommend watching the Evergarden series and the prior movie; otherwise a large part of this won't have the emotion impact it requires. The movie stands on its own, but just barely. The back-story of the prior episodes are essential to understanding the real point and nature of this film.

This has consistently been one of my favorite stories... and to be honest I'm not really sure why. But the character of Violet is about as complex as I've seen in any anime. The total contrast in goofball supporting characters makes Violet's unique and paradoxical personality stand out even more.

I'm rating this 9 stars when considered along with the prior episodes and film. Without those, this would likely strike me as a more bland film. But with the background of the prior stories, this really hits home. The last quarter of the movie might be considered a bit much by some viewers, or a perfect ending by others. Overall, the series as a whole is unique, creative, and emotionally fulfilling.

Feels unnecessary
theworstcritic23 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely adore the show, It's one of my favourite anime. I did enjoy this movie but I felt it was more fan service that ends up ruining the story. Firstly the future part was weird, I don't know why it was there other than a call-back to the best episode of the series. I don't think that Gilbert should be alive, the show was about Violet learning to live without Gilbert, so him being alive kind of ruins it. Even if he was alive, they should have parted ways in the end, showing that Violet no longer needs him. Instead we got them reuniting, which although sweet, felt a little disappointing to me. Also what's with their relationship. I always assumed it was a father-daughter relationship and it appears to be romantic at the end which felt kind of gross. Maybe its my wrong interpretation of the series, but it always felt father-daughter to me, which makes more sense in my opinion. The age gap is weird, but okay, I'll let it slide since things were different when it's set, but dude practically raised her, its messed up that they are a couple. Other than that, pretty solid movie. More of the same tearjerker stuff from the series. Didn't live up to the show, but its not a disappointment.

A Truly Emotional Experience
jreneehughes31 March 2021
This movie is for both people who have seen the series and those who haven't as well. But it takes you on an emotional experience unlike any other I have seen to date. I went to see this with my adult son, his girlfriend and my good adult male friend. And my son kept saying the movie got to me and went on to admit how he couldn't resist crying throughout even though he had never watched the series and my adult male friend said the same even though he had. And here I was in the middle crying between them. And these men rarely ever cry. It brought back in a lot of history about Violet Evergarden but incorporated a new story based off a previous one, a new unique story that will definitely tug at your heartstrings and answers to the one thing the series never did that will also make you emotional. It did several time jumps but it showed how things ended for Violet which if you have seen the series will show how much she changed and allow you to find out how her life ended up. To me it tied up all of the loose ends and allowed a truly emotional experience by a woman who had had at one point no idea what emotions were to feel everything. And to be able to put them into words which was something that took more effort than you would realize if you haven't seen the series. The ending will leave you content and happy.

Just all round beautiful. The story was one of love, loss and life, poignant and simple yet so complex. The animation and visuals were breathtaking. And that reunion.. just, I'm happy we got to see the start of their life together.

A satisfying finale to the series
MovieWarfare28 November 2021
Before watching this movie: Emotionally dead

After watching this movie: IN COMPLETE TEARS

I honestly didn't think there was any need to a sequel as the anime series gave a pretty satisfactory conclusion. However, this was a wonderful sequel and it wrapped everything wonderfully!

YOU DESERVE HAPPINESS, VIOLET!!!

dimecholiver3 July 2021
You just have to see it for yourself. I was fortunate to have watched it in cinemas which experience has honesty left a lasting impact on me. This movie wrapped up the series perfectly whilst leaving your heart yearning for more. I'm going to go rewatch it again just because of now beautiful the movie is.

Slow burner
briancham199425 February 2022
This film disappointed my expectations. It takes too long to get anywhere, has too many characters and subplots, the emotion is contrived and not much really happens. It has some good points though. The visual imagery is downright gorgeous and the characters are iconic (though as my mother commented, Violet only owns one dress). The subplot of finding the major was the strongest part of the film and should have been the sole focus.

Stunning Animation, Beautiful music, disappointing storyline...
justynasitarska1 May 2022
For me it was an assassination of a well crafted and developed character of Violet. Some storylines felt unfinished and unnecessary. I enjoyed it but it could have been so much better... this aside the animation was breathtaking... just spectacular!

Beautiful and disappointing at the same time
falcoaarts-0130912 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
At the end of season one, we leave off with violet becoming more independent, learning how to live without the major. I knew it would happen, but it felt really harsh. Yep, the major is alive blablabla. It should have been stretched out into another season, with Violet going of rumours and "hunting" the major. But we get a really cheap version of it. Violet's character felt weird to me, she didn't feel like who she was at the end of season one, instead, she felt like the person she was in episode one.

Nevertheless, this movie is still decent but mostly because of the secondary story arc, the beautiful animation/art and its soundtrack. The main story arc wasn't that great in my opinion but I can live with that.

I cried like a child in many moments of the movie the animation was so beautiful and perfect although it was a shame we didn't see Violet and Gilbert married ect it was a fitting end for all the characters and such an emotional movie you really have to watch the series and the previous movie to be fully invested emotionally.

Beautiful movie and a satisfying ending
baygeebob3 December 2020
This movie is based on an anime series known as violet evergarden and it is not a standalone movie. For new watchers and viewers please watch the previous series and installments first before watching this movie in order to fully gain an understanding and enjoyment of the characters and the storyline. Anyways, I thorughly enjoyed this movie from start to finish. Storyline was great as it was in the series, plenty of emotional scenes, animation beautifully done as expected from kyoto animation. A great watch

A Glorious Finale
stger9 May 2021
Coming to Japan in order to watch this movie was one of my best decisions this year(2020). Mere month after I've seen final Fate/stay night Heaven's Feel movie I came back this time to Kyoto. Is it better than super hit from ufotable? It doesn't matter actually, I'm speechless. And in love. TV series has few flaws, plot pretty bland and predictable, simplified to the border. But I still loved it, because all these things weren't actually problematic as Violet Evergarden never pretended to be something else than beautiful story about understanding what love is. And it was damn beautiful. And this movie took it whole level up.

STORY: 8 So how this 140 minutes long movie looks compared to its prequel? Well, much, much better. It went full melodrama mode. Movie pick up the story basically where 2018 TV show left. Violet is unable to forget about Gilbert and don't want to believe he's gone forever. Even everyone told her to move on. The MAL synopsis doesn't give much justice to the actual movie plot, but on the other hand... it's somewhat perfect. This nearly two-and-a-half hour long movie throws us pretty fast in the story and it's damn hard to avoid spoilers at this point. Enough tho say, that Violet herself is at her limit and anything can broke her faith and feelings she just learned to understand. As for romantic melodrama pacing is damn fast and story and directing doesn't give much time to process the story. But it ain't flaw, actually it's better for the plot and it's heartbreaking twists. Trust me, even with no spoilers, you'll need napkins. This movie doesn't take prisoners, you'll cry. Especially changes towards Light Novel went even deeper than in TV series. And I'm happy of that, especially when it comes to the finale. Trust me, you can expect suprises, even tho it's still bit predictable. But it was to be expected. It's Violet Evergarden at her finest.

ART: 10 Honestly, this movie is breathtaking. KyoAni did another masterwork, quality of animation is just speechless. Such a beauty, starting from flawless and even more enhanced character designs, throught amazingly animated action and dynamic scenes, finishing on backgrounds and planning. Animation is flawless, smooth and better than ever. Colours, quality, shadows, all location and character designs is just top of the top notch. If it comes to animation this year, no one can stand next to this masterfully crafted work, except ufotable of course. And even that, it's extremely hard to compare this animation to anything I've ever seen. Work of pure art, such a beauty that leaves you literally speechless. KyoAni outdone themselves.

SOUND: 10 It's KyoAni, sound quality is over the top. Perfectly synced, beautifully fitting every second of this movie. All-star seiyuu squad did work of the year, next to final F/sn movie, can't actually decide which is better. Voicing is perfect, leaves no doubt that it's real piece of art. There's soul and love in every dialogue, feelings and power is everywhere, it's a work full of dedication and understanding. Both, for characters and audience. Then we have beautifully crafted atmosphere, world is full of life and ambient sounds are just perfect. And finally we have soundtrack. Evan Call outshine himself once again, music is beautiful, very soft, but at the same moment powerful. It's extremely well fit the melodramatic atmosphere and works both, as perfect piece of work that hit you straight into heart and separate album, will get it asap.

CHARACTER: 9 As before, this movie stands mostly on characters. But this time psychological portraits are deeper and much more detailed. Violet struggling with herself, her feelings, beliefs and past even more than before. It can be truly heartbreaking at one point. This time Dietfried, Gilbert's brother received much more screen time and his character is much deeper and more clarity than before. Finally we can completely understand him, his pain and he went throught. In the past and now. Fortunately rest of the supporting characters got just enough time and plot to actually, unlike the TV series, be much more important to both, Violet and audiences. I mean that this time every important character, starting from Claudia finishing on Cattleya have important task and deepened characteristics and psychological portrait. It's a huge step forward comparing to the prequel and deserves praise. This time characters are on the first plane, including the most important one next to Violet.

ENJOYMENT: 9 The movie heavily plays on the feelings, even more that TV series. But taking whole melodrama to another level it was pretty predictable. Enjoyment is top notch, but can be literally painful at some point. Before you visit your nearest cinema, ensure you have enough tissues on you. I'll not spoil anything, but it's Violet Evergarden, so trust me, you'll need them. Enjoyment overall is great, you'll sit on the edge of your seats, you'll feel, laugh and cry with the characters. And you'll love Violet even more than before. Such a powerful chatacter. Once again she's having literally whole production on her shoulders, but this time, there's no flaws. Enjoyment, even hurtful sometimes is outstanding. It's a perfect entertainment. And perfect sequel, without a doubt it's the best return for KyoAni after the tragedy. Beautiful.

OVERALL: 10 It's 10. Second best anine movie I've seen this year(2020). Extremely poignant, beautifully crafted, with beautiful, bit predictable, but still satisfying plot. It's an perfect example of closing a story and hitting deep into soul of its viewer. This anime movie is not only the best closure for the story, but actually is better in everything than its prequel TV series. It's deep, touching and full of extremely different feels. Will leave you speechless, shocked and ultimately satisfied, even if you didn't like prequel. KyoAni managed to achieve something very rare, they delivered satisfying, amazingly crafted epilogue to this story that's actually better than ever before. 140 minutes long runtime gives perfect amount of time to answer all unanswered questions, to deliver beautiful romance and extremely touching story. It's a masterpiece on its own rights. And beautiful tribute to all these people that died in this awful fire. Is it better than final Fate movie? Probably not, but it manages to stand next to it like equal. Terrible year for humanity, but great year for anime. This is how you craft masterpieces, even if you don't agree. Beauty.

Long live Kyoto Animation.

I enjoyed but...
Niloosh120 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It was so beautiful and emotional and side stories was perfect and made me cry. And GOD the graphic all was wonderful. But I expected more about Violet and Gilbert's reunite, you know more scenes of them or even a kiss at the end. I thought Ann's granddaughter would get more information about Violet's future. Feels like I've been starving for a long time and even after eating I'm not full enough.

Anyway arigato gozaimasu. <3.

A work of art
hazmipatria17 June 2021
An enjoyable movie as a standalone film. A work of art if you have watch the series prior to watching it. The series is good, but for me it only act as a side quest while we learn about the character, whils the movie is the main quest. Go watch it if you can, it is a must watch for me.

It's a good movie BUT...
michaelmilesstimson16 December 2020
The first scenes from the movie would make more sense if you watched the series, understanding who the grandmother is and how/why the letters she cherishes exist, who Violet is and who the Major is to her but from a viewer point-of-view it's not mandatory.

The animation is fantastic beyond compare, the characters are believable and as a stand-alone movie it is amazing BUT I can't help but feel the writers have cheapened the whole experience of tracking down 'the major', I feel it should have been a 25 episode epic of Violet chasing down rumors and shadows while Major Gilbert, feeling remorse for forcing her into combat eludes her, ending with a pan-ultimate scene where Violet finally embraces her one true love and cries 'I am alive, I am free and I love you too, from the bottom of my heart'.

I realize that not everybody likes long running series (for example Bleach, Fairy Tail, Attack on Titan, Black Clover - even Fruits Basket and Clannad) and to them this must seem beautiful, and it is, I rated 9/10 but what is to become of the series now? Though it is somewhat Japanese to know the end in the beginning (I want to eat your Pancreas, Grave of the Fireflies etc.) so perhaps some shadow chasing is still possible and this isn't the death bell of the series created by the talented Kyoto Animation studio.

A disappointing end
zak558 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This move is incredibly beautiful and the moments that work are as good as the main series. Unfortunately, it is also overly dramatic (in a bad way and honestly funny way) and long. It makes it really hard to take many of it's emotional highpoints seriously no matter now badly I wanted to. Again, some moments really work but a lot don't. And then there is the ending. Oh god, the ending. It ruins the core relationship that shaped Violet's character and takes a wonderful parent-child relationship and turns it into a romantic one. They Usagi Drop Violet Evergarden and it left a terrible taste in my mouth. Violet also doesn't get to say much in the ending of her own movie and just gets to stand there while the pedophile talks about how he's always loved her that way. But hey it's pretty and it makes you cry a little, so at least there's that, I guess.

jmenad-3657626 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For a 2 hrs 20mins story, I was expecting more time with the story about her and Gilbert instead we got someone else narrating her story at the end. In the end, her and Gilbert doing the pinky promised 🙄I would have been satisfied if they at least gave a story about the people she used to work with her but no they show a total stranger.

Completely unnecessary
yifany30 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When you think the main plot of the series is for Violet to grow and evolve from the shadows of the past, the movie just throw Gilbert back at her and say: hey here's your long lost lover, stop soul searching and personal growth. Where's the self empowerment here?
