Fun and entertaining
Gordon-1114 April 2020
This film is fun, light hearted and entertaining. It features a lot of jokes, and lots of eye candy too. I had to grab myself some chocolate cookies, after watching the bake sale scene!

Not even enough sexual content to save this garbage
jaybeebrad23 September 2019
Steam Room stories, the web series, had moments of charm mixed in with the shirtless beefcake, but this film is bottom of the barrel bad. The plot is so tired it's laughable. (Insert establishment) is in danger of shutting down because (insert reason owner owes money) and evil (insert stock villain) wants to take it over." In this case it's "gym, didn't pay taxes, beauty magnate who's looking for the fountain of youth."

The worst part is how the characters talk to each other. Nobody actually talks this way, but they don't take it so over the top that it's camp, so instead it just seems like bad writing. Example: a group of buddies decides they'll no longer small talk about sex, and one declares "Ok then! No more talking about poon or peen." Sure, that's a thing someone would say.

Such a bad script!!
paulclaassen6 October 2019
'Steam Room Stories: The Movie' is another perfect example why I generally don't like gay comedies. From the script to the acting to the dialogue, this was just terrible. This was your typical bad acting simple premise gay movie, much in the vein of the 'Eating Out' series.

Nothing here is believable and it looks more like a high school production. None of the actors can honestly be considered serious actors, surely? I'm not even going to highlight the bad moments or analyze this film, it was just such a bad script.

Rather put the film on mute and watch it for the delightful eye candy instead....

Worst movie ever made.
psxexperten4 September 2019
This film was one of the lowest of low budget trash-pieces I've seen in a good decade. A lesson in bad writing and awful acting Do not waste your time. When you see people leave mid way its a terrible sign The writing sucks, the acting sucks, the directing sucks. Do you get the idea that this entire ting sucks?

Not sure how (or why) this was made
Coralknight28 November 2020
Sometimes film-makers really need to understand when to stay in their lane. My guess is the creator of the mildly amusing (and that is being generous) web series of the same name always had the aspiration to turn it into a feature...but why? All the series itself was comprised of short 2 - 3 minute set-ups to a homoerotic joke...hardly a backbone for a feature-length film. And if you are looking to be disappointed, then this film doesn't disappoint...pretty much all I can say there.

Was there even a point to this?
DukeOfMarshall4 October 2022
It's like they gathered some cameras, rounded up a few random people off the street, and just ad-libbed the entire thing. Acting was horrid. I doubt there was even a script. How in the world did anyone think this was even remotely close to a good idea? The attempt at humor seems like it came from a second grade classroom.

If you are ever looking for a way to completely waste away your time then this movie is for you. If you want to know what bad acting looks like then this movie is for you.

But if you would rather keep your sanity and not kill more brain cells, then by all means stay away from this movie.

More than meets the eye

OK. I came for the eye candy and was not disappointed. What I did not expect was some good comedy and a twist at the end. The young men are not boys but genuinely good actors doing a good job at comedy while wearing a towel. Try that to see how challenging this act is. I know how quickly our tribe can dismiss our own work and feel sad that the standards set for this kind of film are set so high or ...... well you know what I mean. Let's not take ourselves so seriously. This funny little film would be a good start. And yes, romance enters the picture as well. Thanks to the people who made this.

Dumb but fun
zobva125 February 2020
Chock full of dumb jocks tropes. The movie is so stupid that it's actually funny! Lots of great one-liners (e.g. "They're so dumb that if they were stuck overnight in a mattress factory they'd sleep on the floor". The unabashed in-your-face humor along with plenty of beefy half-naked guys makes up for the ridiculous plot and lack of acting skills. Plenty of beefcake to keep my pause and slo-mo remote control functions busy.

WYSIWYG

I thought this movie would be awful and you know what? It was awfully entertaining, campy, kitschy, funny, kooky, and just what I needed for an extended covid era pick me up. Nothing cerebral to see here folks, just the most ridiculous storyline and antics. Eye candy was nice too.

Inane fun
cekadah13 October 2019
The movie is purely for laffs and frivolity!

The plot is thread thin. Six very attractive dudes spend their days together hanging out in a steam room. Unfortunately one of the 'dudes' is there for an ulterior motive. As the story progresses we see 'ulterior motive guy' accepted into the steam room coterie. But this dude falls for 'big muscle dude' and being a member of 'the group'. Thus the twist in the plot. It isn't until the end of the movie we find out why the steam room dudes are always there.

This is a silly light entertainment movie. Why so many uncomplimentary reviews is beyond mee!

What A Surprise!
marcdowning11 January 2021
I approached this movie expecting to see something really lame but was I ever surprised. The set-up is very misleading and a lot of it is cheap but stay with it because it turns out to be a very clever thought out movie. Pay close attention attention, put it all together and you will find a quite enjoyable film!

I love JC Calciano's films
scoobdoonla17 September 2019
I've been a fan of JC for some time, because he takes rom com staples and converts them into LGBTQ friendly stories. And with Steam Room Stories the movie, he's done it again. I think it's so important because it brings an audience in who may never go and see an LGBTQ film and makes it accessible to them, much like Love Simon did. How many times have we seen this kind of humor reserved only for an Adam Sandler type film and the audience that would normally watch them? Yes it's absurdist, but that's the point. It's got the spirit of Cry Baby or Revenge of the nerds and it knows what it is. Which makes it so much fun. We aren't watching this for Oscar award winning material. We are watching it to escape and have fun and smile, and I did just that while watching the film. It appeals to the masses while giving you a few good laughs, John Waters style!

A gay old time in every sense of the phrase.
CubsandCulture28 October 2022
This is a silly and campy film. It is more or less a series of sketches connected by the thinnest of plots. The sketches vary in quality-the bake sale sequence is better than the wet undies contest by way of example-but the film is always amusing or sweet. The guys are all hunky; they give good enough performances. The direction is competent. This is a low budget film intended for a niche audience. It generally works but given the lack of light fare and silly films for gay men sometimes we have to take what we can get.

In the end the film has enough self-awareness to make its budgetary and narrative shortcomings go down smoothly. I think this lacks appeal for general audiences. That it fills space very few films try to tackle is its selling point.
