Coruscating criticism of French society
laduqesa17 August 2021
The film nails its colours to the mast right at the beginning. We see immigrants from Algeria arriving in France (not a hijab in sight), the slums and shanty towns they are lodged in after their arrival and then the dreadful council flats and tower blocks finally provided to them. I've seen this type of place in the cités (ghettos) - huge structures teeming with crime, drugs and violence. It's a vicious circle as employers won't even employ someone with an address in the ghetto so there is no way out except for crime.

I speak good French, but I had to watch this with subtitles; the accents were authentic as was the slang and I'm too old to keep up with that these days and French from Marseilles is different from what I learnt in Paris and the north. I just caught half of what the kids were saying. The only scenes I could follow completely were in court or with the examining magistrate when the officials were speaking in "correct" French and the youth attempting to do so. So, for anyone who is not French or who hasn't been living in France for many years, I'd advise the subbed version despite some of the nuances being untranslatable.

The kids reflect the chaos of their upbringing and where they grew up, but there is an added, unpleasant element, namely the admixture of perversions of religion, particularly Islam, added to the equation. Girls are despised especially if they are not virgins and if they are prostitutes, they are beyond the pale and fair game for anyone. Gays and transvestites are worse and Zach justifies his revulsion of tranny Zelda by referring to god. It's a complete dichotomy because these kids are shown as totally amoral in other contexts yet they stick to a twisted set of religious values when it suits them and they clearly don't know the true values that Islam espouses.

The feeling of the film is one of drift. They drift through life, Zach drifts into pimping, they drift into and out of relationships. Money, although it's the cause of the criminality seems almost incidental at times - what's it for? It's just to be blown on expensive presents, nights out or flash vehicles. Their lives are lives of reaction. They react to the Bulgarians, Zach reacts to what happened to Schéhérazade, he reacts to the insults after the court case. There's no direction in these young lives.

It's an entirely bleak vision but one that held the attention. The running time was longish but I wasn't bored for an instant. There were moments of real tension when I was on the edge of my seat and, honestly, my heart beat a bit faster on occasion. I had had this film for a month or so before watching and I should have seen it before, it was that good. I'd recommend this strongly.

All worth watching for the ending
aslisonceley3 August 2019
It was hard to get into it this world right off the bat. I had moments I wanted to wander off. Very specific, tough lives. But the realism and the natural magnetism of the actors kept me in.

The one motorcycle sequence which shot in a single movement is more effective than many action movies I've seen lately. The courtroom sequence flows with a matter-of-fact rhythm and holds a lot of great tension. This is the denoument of the social commentary. The characters, especially Sheherazade grew on me quite a bit in the end.

A well-told story of complicated attraction and consequences

I'm not really one for love stories, but this one has an edge and tells a good street-story. Definitely worth watching.

Worth to watch.

Convincing movie where the individual love feelings face opposite social views and peer pressure. The story unfolds in the teen Muslim community of Marseilles where the social security network fails exposing their youth to drug, crime, prostitution and street violence. Throughout the movie quality, tension and events develop at an adequate pace.

Very good movie
bilbtataye4 January 2021
I was watching this movie as part of a cycle on Marseille, both books and movies. This movie does not actually shows much of the city. What I got was actually a very good movie which depicts a full range of characters and emotions. This is a love story which makes one care about the heroes. Plus the photography was good. I recommend

A jewel of modern neo-realism!
mayamax-4276315 May 2019
I write while I'm moved after seeing this great movie. A jewel of modern neo-realism very well done, editing, photography, dialogues and above all the performance of the young protagonist are really excellent. The gangster story in the first two acts is really tense, moreover full of desolation and misery. The surprising and courageous ending, on the other hand, tightens the heart and leaves room for true love against all expectations, against the will of all, at the high price of suffering the consequent repercussions. A redemption that proves to be the only way out. the salvation that projects the boy to mutation, to adult transformation.

True film
arthur85111 July 2019
There is no way anyone who hasn't grown up in France can understand the nuances this film offers. So much is in the language and in the delivery that you can't understand through subtitles.

Having grown up in the 20eme of Paris, the slang and accents hit home and truly carries this amazing film.

If you think these kids are trying too hard, it's cuz you don't have the perspective of where these kids come from. Everything in this film is genuine and true to the way minorities communicate in the inner cities of France.

If you care about French film, this is indispensable.

True life drama
searchanddestroy-19 September 2018
This French movie is right in the modern fashion way of filming that we see since a dozen years now. A feature which looks like the real life, for instance as people really talk in actual situations, not as like in usual movies. This is about a petty thug, just released from jail, and who falls in love with a petty Hooker. Moving story, very simple, and only enhanced b this terrific true life dialogues. But the lead character seems a little annoying although.

This is scriptwriting 101!

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know what I just saw , but the last 4 minutes brought this thing home into a total climax! Everything was culminating to the spectacular ending! Talk about an arc over, but the line that was delivered at the end was so powerful that it made me rise out of my seat in awe! Excellent , excellent writing, sure the tale is very hard to follow, and the characters, (at first) will make you barf but at the end , the transformation is incredible, they become sweet lil' angels forever petrified as born again lil' ideals! Beautiful and romantic and ever so affecting and ever so touching! Would love to follow this writer...

Captivating gem
giamelena19 May 2019
The guy is really captivating and plays a wonderful role. The girl is not typecasted right at all and she devalues the story. The story is pretty simple but because of the acting and the setting it takes you in from the beginning. Streetlife is depicted really well. A real gem.

Touching, wonderful acting, few great climaxes
sophieparish-6351418 April 2020
Not your typical romance film.. there's definitely a tender love between the two main characters. But the efforts to maintain that love and keep money in the pockets is portrayed so heartbreakingly in this movie. I hope to see more from this director.

A Downer
billcr1223 June 2023
Zachary is released from a juvenile detention center and the teenager is rejected by his mother and meets Sheherezade, a street prostitute who takes him home to her grungy apartment. She shares her living quarters with a drug addicted trans hooker.

Zach and his landlord, Shay, as he calls her, form a romantic relationship and he becomes her pimp along the way. This is not exactly a family friendly Disney production.

He convinces Shay's hooking co-workers to join his stable and with a little help from his friends, they bounce some nasty Bulgarian competitors out of the neighborhood.

The lovebirds suffer through some bad times and Sheherazade is an extremely depressing film.

Like we say " when we're hungry, love will keep us alive.."
ridi-arahan10 January 2021
What worked: The movie is as real as it can get; characters are not as black and white as we see in the movies. It's a well executed movie piece with characters with more than a linear life story. Each had their own story, their struggles and hardship. It's an enjoyable watch, and a well climaxed story. As a movie viewer from a different language, it's a treat. What did not work: Maybe some parts of the story could have been garnished and well explained. The movie leaves some plotholes. On the other hand the characters and stories are not glorified because maybe they wanted to show the characters and the narrative in the gray area; not exactly explaining things. Final verdict: recommended

Story is cute first love but with lot of violence
emmatajima21 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The viewers get a glimpse of the life in certain quartiers of Marseille. It's an aspect of the city of Marseille that tourists do not get to see.

Zach is too naive and hopeless guy, but his gaze to Shera melted my heart little by little.

The last scene was extremely lovely and full of hope.

Epic love story
sonusabir1228 March 2023
A La La Landic love story of the ghettos.

It is at the same time grey and colourful.

It is at the same time filled with indifference and an unbounded-unconditional-innocent love.

The girl with the name Shéhérazade (the name of the teller of the Arabian Nights) and Zachary become in front of us another epic lovers.

The place is beautifully captured. The director has done a great job in bringing out the best in the actors. The sequence of events is such that the characters are introduced in an impactful manner. The depth of characters is beautifully captured. The aesthetic part is well taken care of , the way the characters look in every situation is genuine.
