There's trauma in this romance
lymullen18 June 2023
Today, I finally watched 'Ovy's Voice' after having it on my DVR for a few months. The film stars Bisola Aiyeola as Ovy, a mute makeup artist who communicates through writing in a notebook, and Mofe Duncan as Anaan, the son of one of Ovy's clients. Their paths cross when Ovy tries to convey something to Anaan through her notebook, mistakenly leading him to believe she is a beggar. However, as he discovers the truth about Ovy's condition, he becomes drawn to her and a unique bond begins to form.

As a fan of romantic movies, 'Ovy's Voice' seemed to be right up my alley with its promising premise. The chemistry between Bisola Aiyeola and Mofe Duncan is undeniable, and their on-screen presence is captivating. However, I found myself missing the usual romantic "feels" that I often experience while watching such films. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact reason for this disconnect, but perhaps it was because I had recently watched the exceptional 'North East,' which set a high standard for me in the romance genre.

Despite not fully connecting with the film, I did appreciate the charming moments when Ovy and Anaan would share intimate dinners with wine in the vestibule of her building. Those scenes were undeniably cute and added a touch of warmth to the story. However, I couldn't help but wonder why Ovy never learned sign language to communicate with others including Anaan, which could have deepened their connection and provided a different layer of intimacy.

Furthermore, as the narrative unfolds, we discover that there is a traumatic reason behind Ovy's silence. This revelation adds a bittersweet element to the story, which deviates from the typical feel-good romance that I typically enjoy.

In the end, 'Ovy's Voice' offers a unique exploration of love, silence, and personal struggles. While it didn't resonate with me as strongly as I had hoped, the film showcases the talents of Bisola Aiyeola and Mofe Duncan, and it presents a different perspective on relationships. If you're looking for a romance that delves into deeper emotional complexities, 'Ovy's Voice' may be worth a watch.
