I don't know...
WKYanks15 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure what to make of this one. It didn't piss me off like 'Point of Light' did.

I guess if you were emotionally vested in Hugh then this episode strikes a cord for you. Me not so much.

Too much spore stuff in this one? .. I think so.

Everyone's performances were fine.

This one really didn't advance the "Search for Spock"... chuckle.

So we get pretty much the whole season 1 gaggle back together again. Ash, Georgio and Hugh along with everyone else but Captain Lorca. Will the spores resurrect him as well? ... I don't know how you can not think so at this point.

Let's bench this spore stuff for a while. I guess killing a species as a result of jumping is no longer a reason to can it, so your guess is as good as mine as to what reason it will be benched.

Working with section 31 should be interesting as we move forward.

They got Tilly back, I'm happy about that.

Impressive!

Warning: Spoilers
Triggering thumbs down, because I gave it 8 stars....

Impressive Star Trek Eps, drama, tension, exploring new places and boldly going no man has been before....

Pros!!!!

Section 31 & Georgiou, proving to be the Dark Knight of the DISCO universe.

The Spore universes and Tilly story line pays off, by bringing Stamest & Culber back together...now findout if Culber is really back, back!

Missed Opportunity

Ash Tyler and Stamest confrontation

Con:

Tho they couldn't go deeper with the relationship of distressed between, Pike and Leland, it took a commanding officer to tell them to calm down-so I hope they'll explore it more throughout the season.

The Search for Spock theme continues, sounds like he may be out of his Vulcan mind again, and I guess that something we will just have to discover!!!

Enjoying the storytelling despite some canon sloppiness
LorenBieg16 February 2019
I, a trek fan since the 70s, and she, a complete newcomer to the universe, are both anticipating new episodes of season 2 every week! This story is not the strongest of the season for sure. But we are both at a point where we enjoy the characters and the universe do much that we give the weaker eps a bit of a pass cuz it's enjoyable to see our crew in action.

On the downside, the mycelial network plan feels made up and contrived. And the use of Hugh here is a play to sentimentality that makes bringing Tasha yard daughter back seem like a reasonable plot point. Tilly is the weakest of this season. And section 31? Idk.

Butttt, Pike is the strongest addition to season 2. The best of all starfleet captains rolled into a single character. Effects are top quality as always. And editing and dialog pop and move the characters and emotion forward with a pathos that provides depth, playing against the history established in season one.

Diggin' it!

WTF section 31
llzll-0985316 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What we learned so far from previous series, section 31 is a shadow organisation, nobody admit's it's existence, they don't file reports, they don't ask approval and they most certainly don't fly around in super-advanced starships weaving black badges. Seriously did the writers even watch the already existing ST material?

Not sure i would want to be crew on this ship this episode
mental_unmade21 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit I was going along enjoying this show but this episode had some serious flaws to me.

Let's risk the lives of everyone on some half-baked plan to someone who we might find? Sure why not.

The only guy that can get us out of the bad place is going in there? Nah we can just pull you out with a tractor beam.

Your bodies will get warped and pulled if you get stuck in between, but everything else will be fine.

Oh our hull is going to be almost dissolved? Eh whatever.

The hulls is sinking and everyone will die in 3 minutes? Meh, let's take our time and have some dialogue.

I also like how it took the redhead 2 or 3 episodes to finally ask what the spore lady wanted instead of just haphazardly running away.

I feel like i have been able to overlook things like this before but they just stuck out this episode?

Another outstanding Episode
jenabraham-4331215 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Where do I begin ...first it irritates me that a few people give such low ratings and trash a show for no apparent reason ...however I will survive and unfortunately for those giving the low ratings so will this show Michelle Yeoh just love her character and the way they've developed her character as Phillipa Georgiou and the love hate relationship she and Michael (Sonequa Martin Green) have Their chemistry is off the charts The visuals have always been outstanding how ever in this episode are beyond expectations A familiar character had returned - just so much emotion for this show It tugs at my heart strings every week I'm just in love with this cast and characters I cannot wait until the next episode ...

Saints of Imperfection
bobcobb30112 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It was not horrible, but the show is all over the place right now.

This was far too cartoonish, even more than the Klingon stuff from last season. Just wrap up the alien stuff and move on to something else.

OMG! A science fiction show is doing something not currently possible!
revchristodd18 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What? They are bringing back a character who was dead using some technobabble! Next thing you know they'll bring back some really important dead character like Spock! Oh, wait, they did that in 1984! If you don't want resurrected characters (Spock, Superman, Gandalf, Harry Potter, the Doctor many times over) don't watch or read science fiction or fantasy. I suggest murder mysteries. The victims stay dead.

Warning: Spoilers
Tyler died. Just kidding he's alive again! Saru is dying. Just kidding, he's not! Tilly died. Just kidding, she's back. Hugh died. KiDdINg AGaiN hE IS bACk!

All this happened over the space of TWO episodes. It's lazy, boring storytelling. If you kill off a character, have the guts to follow through.

Performances are good, but at times let down by the writing
snoozejonc11 March 2021
Discovery locates Spock's shuttle and works to find Tilly.

This is a decent episode but it has problems. Starting with positives, I enjoyed visuals, character moments and the majority of the performances. However, the writing in some instances does not compel me.

There were a number of characters who for me had some strong scenes such as Pike, Georgiou, Stamets, Tilly and Burnham in parts. However the plot lost me when one character makes a surprise appearance. I have to admit this is a matter of personal taste on my part as I generally dislike resurrection stories. Also, the mycelial network plots are starting to wear thin.

There are issues with the Section 31 involvement as the Discovery is running a danger of normalising their involvement and interaction with Starfleet, however I will reserve judgement until viewing further episodes.

I have the same issues with some of the dialogue as I had in previous episodes. The exposition is so obvious it feels lazy.

The visuals are as beautiful as ever, with great cinematography, lighting and colours on display constantly.

I appreciate the points being made by other reviewers about the emotional content of the show. Emotion can be powerful on screen but when you see too much from the same characters it gets annoying. It would be nice to go a few episodes without someone crying or welling up.

All that being said, I do not blame the actors, they all play their characters well, particularly Mary Wiseman who for me, along with Doug Jones, is always great value for her screen time.

Really?
dameterpeter16 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I like this series, i defended you in front of other fans. But why? Seriously: WHY? There is a difference between Game of Thrones and idk Xena. Bringing Hugh Culber back from the dead? That's so soapy. Usually you bring people back like this, if and when you run out of ideas or being a showrunner who fled the 80s... Go ahead, if you want to be Dallas of SciFi. Not bring one but two back from the dead. Kudos for that.

Another Groan...
rsvp32115 February 2019
Just when the writers were guiding this series into becoming one of the best Star Trek series yet, they do a nosedive to reintroduce a boring relationship that no one cared about.

I know what's around the corner, unfortunately - focus on LGBT relationships.

Groan!

Boldly goes where no (or few) shows have gone before!
robbja15 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek Universe is a bold show that has gone where no SciFi shows have gone before! The first interracial kiss and now one of the most beautiful love stories ever in fiction and it is a gay love story! Brilliant!

I bet that Gene Roddenberry smiles approving in his afterlife!

I care
NordicSwan180418 July 2019
I care about their relationships. I care. You don't care about the crews relationships? Then why watch the show? If it's not your Star Trek, watch the other many, many iterations of Star Trek. This is Star Trek, at its core.

Deus ex machina
bnevs1815 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
OK, so they handled the Hugh thing poorly. If last season they had left some clue as to this it would be a good payoff, but it just seems like something they made up after the fact. Go to the well too often and people wont believe someone is ever dead. Discovery is also falling into the Voyager 'Reset button' problem...so it was seconds from liquidizing the hull and now everything is hunky dory? STD is just falling into too many TV tropes.

Really Enjoyed this Episode
sbulgacs17 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
We watched this episode as a group, we're really appreciating Star Trek being back on our TV's weekly. Watching it has become a bit of an "event". We being a group of Trekkies. The special effects were top notch and the action well paced. We discussed what some of the naysayers are saying and think they should stop watching rather than posting completely false negative reviews. We did have a slight problem with the Section 31 developments though. In DS9 when the agency was first introduced no regular Star Fleet personnel knew they existed except Captains and Admirals. Yet here they are 100 years earlier with their own spaceships, uniforms and even insignia, introducing themselves to everyone?

Yet another misfire as far as I'm concerned
thomas-mcaulay-118-53441115 February 2019
I understand that some people are enjoying this show and I respect that. All I can say is that after 29 episodes I'm officially done. I honestly just don't enjoy it. I don't understand it, I don't care about or like most characters and I've just given up. I say this with a heavy heart as I wanted to like Discovery but there just comes a point where you give up. I say this as a lifelong fan of Star Trek too!

This episode just left me stone cold. I found myself actually hoping that characters would die so we wouldn't have to watch them. The "science"is absurd. They are hoping if they talk enough nonsense quickly enough we will just overlook the fact that it's so utterly contrived.

If this is what is popular nowadays I wish the creators and fans best of luck. I'm out

A glimmer of hope
Kevin-4219 February 2019
First things first: The way the writers handle Section31 compared to previous shows within the Star Trek universe is strange. It sort of enforces the view that the writers don't know about previous shows out of pure negligence or straight up don't care about established lore.

That being said, I found this epsisode to be bearable bordering on entertaining. It does require a hefty dose of suspension of disbelief but there were many episodes in past Star Trek shows which didn't take themselves so darn serious. Sometimes you get a little less Sci and more Fi in Star Trek and this episode is a good example.

Moreover, for the most part character interactions in this episode matter contrary to last week's instalment. Burnam's reaction to Georgiou had an impact on Pike and we actually got to see some dynamic character development which felt meaningful and not artificially drafted over bad writing. The conflict resolution was a bit cheesy but it'll work for me.

I don't know where this show is going and I have been very critical of this season so far but I'm willing to give credit where credit is due and this wasn't all that bad at all.

Adventures in the Mycelial network
XweAponX15 February 2019
I thought we were looking for a magic angel red thing?

A search for Spock and Tilly turned into a search for someone else. But nobody ever knew it. We were told it was "a monster". I was half expecting the Tardigrade, or even Lorca. Cos "Matter cannot be created or destroyed, it merely changes form. - You Must Remember this".

May swiped Tilly with a coccoon. Will a cocoon bring something back?

There is a lot more going on here than merely the discovery halfway in-halfway out into the mycelial network, Or May kidnapping Tilly, or Giorgiou hunting down Spock, or even the reappearance of Ash Tyler who is now the liaison officer between section 31 and discovery.

And just like there appears to be 7 magic red-angel signals, there also appear to be seven subplots in this ongoing story.

Something happens in this episode I was completely not expecting, and it was something good. "Something wonderful".

Listen for the reference to Voyager season four episode one, it crops up in an interesting place.

Yet another amazing episode
joshhill-3504915 February 2019
By going off the "so called reviews" of these people aims at one thing its too complex for their tiny minds to comprehend. Something with a bit of emotion and people switch off i found that that was yet another fantastic episode that was filled with emotion and action and had me sitting on the edge of my seat several times!!!

Hyper-convoluted
yoshimo-1312915 February 2019
Sadly the writers doubled down on the crazy mycelium network thing by giving it powers that make the show appear to be more science fantasy than science fiction. And even this fantasy plot is hard to follow, as it is extremely convoluted and features opaque storytelling and presentation in order to mask its bad writing.

And again this episode does not drive the plot, but is the third interlude in a row.

I went to the spore woods
patrickcinema16 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The good old, Burnham power woman is back, after she had softened the last episodes and was too often moved to tears. Empress Georgiou surprises with her complexity, she is not only sinister and evil but muli-layered, just as we would have liked Lorca to be at the badly written end of the first season. Great acting. After the cronenbergian body horror with the proliferating fungus portal of the last episode I would not have thought how beautifully the spore world is designed here. I had to think of George Lucas' former company Industrial Light and Magic: yes, that's how light and magic must look like! The GCI are once again cinematic, beautiful to look at and are also used appropriately. I quickly get into raptures. The story of Culber is outrageous, but equally stringent and enchantingly implemented and played. When his arm did not materialize, that was heartbreaking and could have been (if they would have consistently sacrificed him) one of the biggest Star Trek moments. Incidentally, the Section31 ship has the coolest tractor beams. Although we are not dealing with breathless suspense here, it is a great pleasure to see how much has been done right here.
