Point of Light

Warning: Spoilers
Not a great episode, but for the first time this season there was a little bit of action and a little bit of suspense in the Star Trek universe.

They are doing a good job of teasing Spock's debut on the show too.

Klingon Filler
SethaWhenTheWallsFell1 February 2019
Ok so as far as Klingon episodes of Discovery go this was an improvement but still problamatic from a continuity standpoint. They most spoke english dialogue which was an improvement over the plodding subtitle scenes off the first season but the story overall felt out of place with what this season has shown us this far.

The Spock stuff while interesting was also rife with more continuity issues and felt like padding to fill out the episode. Also the camera work was extremely over the top this week. Bring back Johnathon Frakes.

Over all this episode felt like filler and wasn't as good as the first two episodes. 6/10

I was really getting into season 2 of discovery. They lost me at the part where Tilly won the half marathon. As if.

A slow, but necessary
oszajcakk1 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was divided into three main stories. Two of them we already knew, but one was new. Klingon part of episode had two goals. First, conclude Tyler story and second, reintroduce Empress. Michelle Yeoh is a highlight of the episode, even though she is present only for few minutes. Tilly story will be concluded in next episode and Spock part is a fuel for whole season. I would like to see more Michelle in this episode. Her appearance look more like a small pilot for her new series. Episode was slow, but it had it's moments.

Beware of some of these low reviews
joealbanese-536581 February 2019
So as I write this there are only 8 written reviews and 2 are clearly written by the same person with different accounts, one of which was just created this month. How do I know that they are the same person, well they use the same language regarding something called the "Bechdel Test". (and the reviewer completely gets the test wrong by the way)

So this person gives it a 1 and 2 stars review and says that the show is "propaganda" and that it proselytizes about accepting other cultural ideas and beliefs and that the show pushes an agenda. He/she says that the show panders to "progressiveness". So this is not really a review of the show but a political statement. What's really funny is that this reviewer ludicrously suggests that the old Star Trek would never so such a thing. Huh?. Star Trek was known for tacking current events such as race relations, sexism, militarism, etc. and being very socially conscious. That the reviewer doesn't know this leads me to believe he is not a true Star Trek fan at all.

So this reviewer felt soooooo strongly about the supposed political content of this entertainment show that he created a new account just so he can review it twice with low numbers. Who knows, by the time you read this he might be up to 3, 4 or 5 reviews. Just be forewarned to read his reviews with the huge grain of salt required. It is sad that people political agenda has to impose itself even here in a review of TV show.

Oh, and I thought the show was very entertaining. I look forward every week for the next episode and I am a die hard Star Trek fan. This show does honor to those that preceded it.

Sorry for the rant but those two reviews just annoyed the living heck out of me.

Klingon filler & Section 31 prologue
asp51971 February 2019
It wasn't great, it wasn't bad. It was a decent filler episode. We got a peek at what Georgiou's series will entail, a possible DS9 foreshadow (is The Albino the child of Voq and L'Rell?), some resolution on Tilly's ghost (a personal highlight for me).

Now for the bad: Pike, who in my mind is the standout of this season, is mostly on the back burner. Also for the love of God no more Klingons, or at least no more Klingon blood feuds, I beg of you writers. Also I have mixed feelings about seeing Ash again, but I would love to see him as a regular in Georgiou's Section 31 series as was implied at the end.

All in all, decent filler.

A surprise around every corner
starsurfer8322 November 2019
This season not only feels like Trek but also is becoming a compelling SF story in its own right. The Klingon battle was thrilling . . . the Starfleet race not so much . . . but the writers did a great job planting seeds and spiking the brew to what will hopefully be a great payoff later.

I am enjoying the fleshing out of Spock's mother as a deep character who was held in such high esteem by her son.

Is Amanda a Klingon?
d.rust17 February 2019
It's a valid question.

Given how her dialogue causes each and every scene that she's in come to a screeching halt, I suspect she has Klingon blood in her.

And given that she is a teacher, she has absolutely nothing to appeal to a student. She is monotonous in her tone, lacking any passion at all for inspiration. This actor is the diametric opposite of her 60s counterpart.

This episode is rated 1 for being stupid, slow and generally crappy. Watch the Orville instead.

Intermission

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is quite a handful. I just can't get my head around those Trek Universe changers - Spock's got awol whilst emotionally crazy, Stilly got a resistant spore fungus (I would've liked more sth. like Double Dan from Ralph breaks the Internet) and L'Rell is now Klingon Queen Mum? Something's disturbing the universe! Coming the dark side is maybe? That two-sided stun gun reminded me of that lightsaber from Darth Maul! A few more episodes like this and I think only the Doctor (or maybe the Orville?) can save Star Trek...

You get your hopes up and then this.

Warning: Spoilers
Last episode had big parts where you actually felt like you were watching Star Trek again. It was about a crew on a starship exploring and overcoming challenges.

Sadly this episode was just plain bad. The ship just sits there idle while a soap opera unfold where we follow three-story arc's and see the introduction of an upcoming spinoff series.

Arc 1. Tilly shows us that she is unfit for command. Not because of her situation, but because her goal of moving up the command ladder is more important than then the safety of the ship and its crew. When she is found out she is rewarded and not corrected on her arrogance.

Arc 2. The Klingons... yeah no. Some soap opera thing happens and then big mama takes control. Very realistic.

Arc 3. Burnham is the center of the universe again. now properly literally.

I ones read an interview of an author known making very lifelike characters of both sexes. He was asked how he wrote female characters. He said something along the lines of "I just write them as if they were people, just as I do when I write for characters that are men." I feel that this series could learn from that.

As a progressive feminist, this series grinds my gears. I want a future where the sexes are equal. And I love then sci-fi is able to show us such futures. Voyager is a good example of that. It had multiple strong women in it. Characters that seemed real and reminded me of the strong women that I have met in my life. I would love a Star Trek with even more diversity and strong females but this has disapointed me.

I'm glad I saw this before watching the lastest Orville, need to get me some good sci-fi.

(Thumbs down Triggers) Supposed Spock murder 3 doctor plots Leaning why our protagonistcan be cold with her reactions, with her adopted mother's upbringing. Not as bad as other reviews claim
snoozejonc19 February 2021
Infighting plagues Qo'nos, Tilly hallucinates and Burnham discusses Spock with her mother.

I mostly enjoyed this episode for the Klingon and Tilly scenes, but struggled a bit with the Spock related saga.

The Klingon scenes are a bit melodramatic but I have to admit I found them entertaining. I like the look of the Klingons with hair and it feels like a perfect balance of the old and new look. The Tilly scenes were even better and gave some decent sci-fi concepts and good character time with the crew.

Unfortunately the Burnham and Amanda scenes consisted of a lot of talking and revising Trek history for something that so far doesn't feel terribly intriguing. I hope I'm proven wrong when the plot becomes clearer.

My biggest gripe as always is the exposition heavy dialogue that plagues many scenes in the episode. The biggest and most obvious offending line was one near the end when Ash Tyler explains a method of deception used to fool the Klingons in a previous scene.

Visuals were excellent when the camera didn't move about so quickly and all performances were solid, particularly from Mary Wiseman.

With this episode the magic of Star Trek faded away and left us with Discovery again...

This episode is reprehensible. 1hr episode. 45 minutes of banal exposition. A baby was stolen and I actually didn't care whatsoever.

Please. Please I beg you. No more Klingons. They are excruciating. The look. The way they talk.

I don't know what happened. I don't care what happened in this episode. I'm trying but man you make it hard Discovery.

Stop turning the camera upsidown. Sideways. Who wrote this? God who wrote this?

I like the cast. I love the inclusion. But you're wasting it with horrendous writing

Great, Except PLEEZ No More Klingons
LorenBieg9 February 2019
Ive been a Trek fan since I was a kid and understand the objections from the true trekkers. But gotta say that even with the sloppy science, Burnham burnout, and canon inconsistencies I can't not love this show for the pure entertainment value.

Alien fun is higher in this episode. And Tilley is used to great effect. I'm also enjoying they way the crew is used as an ensemble this season. The way the characters "interpret" starfleet regulations is reminiscent of classic trek. And Pike continues to grow on me.

My one complaint is the Klingons are just SO predictable and boring I can't wait for the scenes to be over. Annoying beyond excuse. The fact that Next Generation did Klingons so well makes it that much more of a fail. Just the most tired old familiar shallow Klingon sub plots with no emotion and lispy, marbles-in-their-mouths slow talk. Taking a couple stars back for that.

Freaks are more Fun
XweAponX1 February 2019
And developing story is not filler. Tilly sees dead people, something that we have seen all the way back in short treks, so that is something that we already knew - Tyler/Voq is having L'Rell issues, again no big spoiler there as that has been going on since season one - Spock is... what? We don't even know what he's doing so can't say much there.

Three (four) interweaving storylines dance around our 7 magic Red Angel signals. I feel that this break in the Red Angel dialogue was a welcome respite, it shows a more alarming backdrop. Things are not normal.

The Red Angel itself is one thing to Spock, another to Michael. Part of that story is told here, maybe the very beginning of it.

But on Qonos, Tyler stumbles onto a secret that could cause L'Rell a lot of problems... especially if an enemy house hears about it.

And Tilly's Invible friend, her persistent, annoying ghost, is not what "she" appears to be.

These vignettes are explanatory sections of a larger picture, far more than mere filler material. I don't understand the massive negative reaction to this episode, it's as if they are not really commenting on a Trek episode, but on the very values Trek is based upon, something which has never changed through all of the various shows and films. I really didn't reveal anything about this episode that gives anything away, other than the "vignette" framework so I am switching it back to no spoilers.

I just realized that the title of this Ep refers back to a Next Generation Episode, the one where Kahless appears. In that, they refer to a planet in orbit around a "Point of Light" that Kahless randomly pointed at, which was "Boreth". The end of this episode refers to that planet, and it comes up later in this season. Turns out they do much more on Boreth than pump out Clones of Kahless... it's a rather important planet, in this series as well as for Worf in TNG.

What I find amazing about Mia Kirshner's "Amanda" is that she looks a lot like what a younger Jane Wyatt would have looked like. The only difference is the voice, Jane had that Hollywood voice used by most actresses from the 30's, an almost British accent, but not quite. Mia does not do this.

What happened?
kmac2385 February 2019
Last week was amazing, I honestly felt like I was watching next gen for the first time again. This week however, can only be described as "filler". I'm sure this episode set in motion storielines for future episodes but it felt like poorly written, clunky filler. I want to like Discovery and often do but so much of the series is exactly not what Star Trek is all about. Where's the adventure? Where's the teamwork? Where's the discovery? If we want to watch a show that's all about interpersonal drama and love triangles they can get that from most other tv series or reality tv. Get back Frakes and give us some Star Trek, please.

The Good and the bad
lasserasch2 February 2019
I don't get why people give this episode 1/10 rating. That is not fair.

The show now starts to move towards something that looks and feels like a real startrek show.

But i do agree with people saying that the camera work was terrible. They focus Way to much on "cool" camera effects instead of the story. Please stop doing that. That's not why people watch a startrek show.

Section 31. Now that is cool and something i have wished for to happen in season 1 also.

Really looking forward to where that story Line is going...

I like the fact that they try to better introduce other caracters than Michael. Give Them some "air time".

Looking forward to the next episodes.

Bad Directing Slows Starfleet/Klingon Peace
mkurland232 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was well written, but it had the wrong director. Since the story deals a bit with the Klingon Empire, my choice of a better director for this episode would be Roxann Dawson, AKA B'Elanna Torres on "Star Trek: Voyager" because she knows the Klingons as well as Michael Dorn (Worf, TNG & DS9).

Good story telling?
tomnikoleris2 February 2019
What is this episode? Soooo far fetched, so many decisions that would not happen in real life. Not going to sick bay when you are seeing a ghost and previous episode you where like "yeah science"? Your friends ,co workers , captain not telling you to go to sick bay or even order you, after they saw you talk into thin air.

Every single scene feels like it is practiced 100 times , the actors feels like they are doing the moves just to get to the end of the scene.

So much talking and talking and i really don't care, i am kinda bummed by this episode.

If this is star trek cant we not have this silly soap opera writing, the show feels small and crowded with no one really shining at the moment.Cant we do the fun stuff about star trek? Lets evacuate a planet, or drill some hole in the magma of an H class planet. Or beam some people up and down, i don't know i don't get paid for this, but how about we encounter a freaking space anomaly and someone get sicks and has flashbacks of alternate timelines which eventually and up to be the conscious mind of another dimension being and we wrap it up with some positive message like teamwork and logical thinking, throw some ethics in there too.

I said it before ,this is a space opera episode.. and maybe show? i hope not. .

MICHELLE YEO IS BACK
jenabraham-433122 February 2019
This season is starting to be favorite .. So much to take on ..the attention to detail is breathtaking Discovery doesn't rely on the same outside visuals we got from previous Star Trek shows The different story lines are interesting and you just know they are all gonna tie the storyline together brilliantly Great seeing Kenneth Mitchell again !! The Klingon sets were some of the best .... Keep up the good work Discovery!

Mixed feelings
locutus-1771711 February 2019
Watching Star Trek in the form of ST:Discovery is a bit like visiting a beloved person who is seriously ill and delirious. At times, this person gets slightly better. Sometimes, the ravings possess certain beauty/grandeur. But, most of the time..... Anyway, there's always hope!

I don't understand, but I do
terry-kimbrough2 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First off, I can get around the looks of the Klingons, but the prothetics are so thick, they all sound like they have a sinus infection. I even had to go back and listen again because of how muffled they were.

Second, this new Trek Universe lacks a Y chromosome. In the TOS Universe, there were alot of strong women and men. It seems now that there are only strong women and the men, including Captain Pike, cave when a woman offers advice. Amanda, wife of Sarek, is now an action hero? Come on.

Even the Klingons have taken a woman Chancellor. BTW, you have to call her "mother". A little over the top if you ask me. She gave up her family to pursue her ambitions.

I did like the idea of Section 31 (hence the 3 stars). I think a ruthless refugee from the Mirror Universe makes the perfect leader for this clandestine organization. Hope we see more of this.

I must be a glutton for punishment because I'll be back. But I do hope they find a cure for their lack of testosterone and the Klingon's chronic head cold.
