This was definitely extra ordinary...
paul_haakonsen10 August 2020
Well, "Extra Ordinary" turned out to be more than I had hoped for. You might actually say that it actually lived up to its title - if you get my drift.

The storyline in "Extra Ordinary" was rather interesting, and it was laced with some nice funny moment. And the wonderful character gallery was definitely helping to bring the movie to its full potential. I enjoyed the story told in "Extra Ordinary" quite well, and it was a fun movie.

"Extra Ordinary" has some really nice acting performances by the likes of Maeve Higgins, Barry Ward and Will Forte. They were given very interesting and in-depth detailed characters to work with. And it was just glorious to watch them unfold on the screen. And it should be said that the character gallery definitely have some very memorable and lovable characters to display, which was something I really liked about the movie.

I will say that "Extra Ordinary", at the hands of directors Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman definitely delivered a wholehearted entertainment, and they managed to mix the comedy and horror elements quite well.

If you enjoy horror comedies, then you should not cheat yourself out of the experience of watching "Extra Ordinary", because the movie is definitely living up to its name, and it is quite well worth taking the time and effort to sit down and watch.

My rating of "Extra Ordinary" is a seven out of ten stars. I was initially going to settle it on a six out of ten, but actress Maeve Higgins was so fabulous in this movie that she managed to lift up the movie another star in its rating.

A witty and charming genre mash up that deserves to find an audience in this world or the next
mwilson19762 April 2020
A sweet, good natured comedy about a psychic driving instructor called Rose who has a love hate relationship with her abilities and is followed around by a lone magpie which could be the spirit of her dead father (who was also a psychic). This Irish movie features requests for exorcisms, haunted rubbish bins, a washed up rock star who has a pact with the devil to sacrifice a virgin in order to resurrect his career, and lots of icky ectoplasm. Sure some of the jokes fall a little flat, but there's some superb Irish wit and attention to detail to be found here, the characters are all lovable and hilarious, making Extra Ordinary a delightful distraction. Airdorf Games created a browser game based on the movie's plot in order to help promote it.

Light-hearted, witty, easy to watch!

*NON-SPOILER*

I'm not exactly sure why, but when I seen the cover of this film, I genuinely thought it wouldn't be that great. The comedy in the film is excellent; snappy and quite dry which is perfect for me. The Irish always seem to pull dry wit off and very well at that! The storyline is intriguing and humourous, although far from serious, which is perfect for what the film is aiming to achieve. I would certainly watch it again, so, it just goes to show that you don't judge a book (or in this instance, a film) by its cover!

Pretty good
thelemon-994039 April 2020
The film was very funny, the plot was heartwarming but the script felt a bit undercooked, the movie had a bit of trouble transitioning between heavy themes to a gag (I'm looking at you Chinese delivery) but apart from a few cringes I had a great time watching this. The cinematography was top notch too! Yup the Irish film scene.

It's better than being gangbanged by demons in hell

Warning: Spoilers
This movie almost lost me a couple times when it got a little tiresome, but the performances saw me through. The lead actress had a great delivery of subtle humor. She feels responsible for her father's death because she couldn't save him with her "gift," so she doesn't help with hauntings anymore. She changes her mind when a widowed man needs help saving his daughter. The humor was a good balance of sardonic and over the top.

Slaptstick rom-com irish horror
repojack9 January 2021
Christian (Will Forsythe): "Oh! Oh, the virgin! Claudia, what on God's green undergarments did you do! Now I shall have to procure another virgin!" (Bites finger hard for 10 seconds). "The virgin divination rod. Have you seen it?"

Claudia"Oh, the willy stick?"

This is a very funny horror/rom-com with an emphasis on comedy. The beginning quote leads to one of many hilarious sight-gags.

William Forsyth is Christian, failed rockstar and budding satanist, and Claudia O'Doherty is his hilariously nagging wife Claudia. Both are standouts and elevate the entire flick from what could be B-movie fare.

Derivative at times and the comedy is often laid on way too thick, the quote above should be your litmus test -- if it makes you laugh, watch it. If not (or possibly offends), avoid.

Pleasant Entertainment
sharkpuppy28 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In this movie, a troubled woman must overcome her fears to help a father save his young daughter from being raped and killed by demons. Though violent and gory in parts, this movie also manages to be charmingly humorous and even heartwarming. A plot twist near the end results in a memorable sex scene. This movie is pleasant entertainment in my opinion, but potentially offensive to those who seriously believe in supernatural phenomena like ghosts and fallen angels.

Poorly executed
a_mobbs19 March 2020
The storyline is quite interesting, and some of the characters show promise but there is something about this that is inherently juvenile. Failed to hit the mark for me.

Terrific Fun
alisonc-124 July 2019
Rose (Maeve Higgins) has given up her calling as a psychic after a terrible accident and is making her living as a driving instructor in rural Ireland. Martin (Barry Ward) is a widower with a troublesome ghost of a wife and an increasingly sassy daughter, Sarah (Emma Coleman). When he asks Rose for her help exorcising the ghost, she at first refuses, but then a well past his prime rock star (Will Forte) decides he needs the blood of a virgin to renew his vows to Satan in order to revitalize his long-dormant career, and Sarah is just who he's looking for; or is she?.... This is a very funny movie about ghosts, lost hopes, redemption and everything in-between; Forte is hilarious as the over-the-top Christian Winter, but it's Ms. Higgins who carries the film with humour, grace and rather an alarming amount of moxie. Throw in some sight gags referencing other horror movies along with just out-there craziness (deer head crying tears of 7-Up - "it's Mummy, she always loved 7Up!"), and this is a film that should get a wide audience everywhere. Extraordinary, indeed.

Can we save Milli Vanilli?
bkoganbing5 December 2020
Saying something is droll and Irish is a 100% oxymoron. But Extra Ordinary is really special comedy coming from among others the fertile creative brain of its star Maeve Higgins. On this side of the pond no one will know from Higgins or any of the other cast members and that's a pity.

Higgins stars and had a hand in the writing owns and operates a driving school, but at one time she was a psychic in communication with the dead spirits. She gave that up because there were too many variables and unintended consequences to deal with.

But one of her customers for driving lessons has a bigger problem. His daughter is in suspended animation at the behest of the Prince of Darkness to be offered up as a virgin sacrifice.

The one who's made a deal with the devil is a former rock star, having that status because he was a one hit wonder. Now a C status celebrity he yearns for fame and an entourage. So he and old Scratch have struck a bargain for one virgin to be delivered at the appointed hour.

I have to say that Extra Ordinary drags a bit in the middle, but the last 20 minutes are excruciatingly funny, not to be missed.

If this deal can be worked, can the career of Milli Vanilli be revived?

Ectospasm...
Xstal30 July 2020
While its heart's in the right place it stops beating far too often and only the occasional smirk resuscitates it back to life. If the reaper could scythe the melodramatic 'has been' and let his wife take the lead, a far better film would result.

znwch22 October 2019
There is something very off with the movie. it is 10% puns 60% awkward menial shots who contribute nothing to the plot(besides dragging it) and 30% exposition done in a very annoying way (usually in the form of a character explaining to another something they already know in a long winded way). Would have worked better probably if it was condensed in a fourth of the runtime

Extra Ordinary
henry8-310 November 2020
Maeve Higgins stars as Rose, a driving instructor who also has a talent for dealing with ghosts. She is approached by Forte a man haunted by his wife, whose daughter is in trouble with a local one hit wonder musician and enthusiastic devil worshipper.

Wonderfully silly and very funny ghost / insidious type spoof which despite the outrageously daft premise and scenes still manages to be quite charming with some great characters and actually some impressive effects given the budget. A nice treat if you fancy a good laugh.

Supernatural shenanigans.
Pjtaylor-96-1380444 September 2020
This oddball supernatural comedy is genuinely soaked in charm, a homegrown and subtly absurd mix of genre tropes and sly satire. 'Extra Ordinary (2019)' is great fun, providing plenty of laughs and a few genuinely unexpected moments along the way. Its central dynamic is satisfying, too. Of course, it's absolutely ridiculous. That's part of why it works so well, though. It knows how silly it is, playing with irreverently over-the-top tomfoolery as well as some less obvious situational stuff. It's usually the latter that elicits the most laughter, but there aren't many jokes that fall totally flat (even if they're not all chuckle-worthy). Though the piece isn't especially complex, overly exciting or massively affecting, it's an enjoyable and affable adventure that's actually rather unique. 7/10

Irish Comedy-Horror
Pairic22 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Extra Ordinary: Rose is a driving instructor and former Psychic who gave up the spiritual stuff after killing her father (also a psychic( when she messed up a ritual (there was a dog spirit involved). Now she is followed by a magpie and can see all the local ghosts who haven't moved on. She is persuaded to help Martin whose late wife is now a poltergeist and sends him messages printed on toast. Martin's daughter is also possessed through a Satanic ritual. There's a failed popstar who believes that he can make a comeback through a deal with a Demon, the ritual involves sacrificing a virgin.

All in all a typical Irish small town complete with a woman who loves going to funerals. Some nasty scenes, especially when a virgin is accidentally sacrificed prematurely resulting in a mess. But this is leavened by the comedy of a possessed recycling bin and a rather disgusting method of collecting ectoplasm. Martin's wife is also hilarious when she dybbuks him. A good Comedy-Horror film though some of the jokes may be lost on non-Irish viewers. Directed and written by Mike Ahern. 8/10.

Funny little Irish comedy, but with hit and miss quality and too light a spirit
siderite12 January 2021
Another film that doesn't know what it wants to do. It mixes Irishness with the low budget horror/sci-fi/fantasy humor that is in fashion today, then adds a bit of satanism and romance for good measure. It felt like someone wanted to mix Truth Seekers, Ordinary People and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina into a single movie. And while it was pleasantly funny, it wasn't anything worth mentioning.

A shame
olivierantoine31 December 2019
When the gags are not (too often) below the belt, they are predictable and simply not funny: during a ritual a character uses medical herbs and then asks "do you have basil? I brought a pizza" . Houlala the power of humor. Lazy plot written (it made me think of the humorous short films of youtubers, that is to say ...): it progresses painstakingly, it skates (understand: there is no story, content or character). It does not play very well, apart from the 2 male actors but Will Forte overshadows what gives the film the comic maturity of a comedy intended for 8-10 year olds. In short it is quite stupid, vulgar and uninteresting. I imagine that the American pie and the like look like this ...

Quirky Comedy
nitro721 February 2022
Quirky comedy feels like an attempt to channel a combination of 'Shaun Of The Dead' & 'What We Do In The Shadows'. And while not without its own unique charm & fun sense of humour, the script is a little light & a tad rushed. #nitrosMovieChallenge.

Meh, I don't know why this has a 7/10 from critics. It's okay if you're super bored and like ghost films, but it was a one and done movie for me.
