Turgid, tedious
VoyagerMN198621 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Half of NF-LA audience walked out, the rest spent their time on their phones.

"Meta" theme of trying to market a a junk film has been done a hundred times. In this case if you want to see it done where the actual film is worse than the dog fim withing a film, than this is for you. And don't pay attention to fake ratings, there are four "10" and "9" ratings for this, all doubtless by family of the hapless and no-talent cast and crew. The other dozen reviewers gave it a "one."

initially fun but slipped into s tedious annoying venture
karlbroderick11 July 2020
This had the potential to seem like a fun adventure for 3 budding filmmakers and some of the funny mishaps that happen along the way that can develop the characters and what not....but sadly it didn't. I was bored and put off by them all, it all felt annoying, especially the red head.

THe film didn't accomplish or explore any themes, like that of failure to see ones vision, the pain of not fullfilling your passion, it all felt like 3 whiny people trying to elevate their self worth, they were all soooooo annoying, I'm sorry Mr filmmaker, there's a good story in here I think...it's just not on the screen.

A really fun film!
evelyne-87 May 2020
Alex Ferrari film and ideas are really great at showing self-deprecating humor executing a well crafted, "On The Corner of Ego and Desire." Three aspiring indie filmmakers make a really fun journey to the Sundance Film Festival to try to sell their self-declared masterpiece. They each show very real stereotype of the indie moviemaker: The producer, using his mother's savings, the director who's delusional and the editor trying to navigate everyone's craziness. This is a truly well crafted and very funny comedy. If you like films about the business and characters driving by ego and desire you'll love this film.

On the Corner of Ego and Desire meets Sundance
steve-1030823 January 2020
Filmed on location at Sundance 2018 On the Corner of Ego and Desire is a well produced and directed indie film that is well worth the watch. Following the film from concept to production director Alex Ferrari has done a stellar job together with a great cast we will no doubt see agin in future productions taking you on a journey that many film makers would have witnessed whilst giving the movie a few twists and turns on the way. Gets 10/10 also considering the budget and timescale.

Very enjoyable little film
ArisG218 January 2023
This movie was absolutely adorable. As an aspiring filmmaker, I've met a lot of other filmmakers who rush to these top tier festivals which did not accept their film, hoping to still be able and sell it to producers. I think the film did a great job of showing the desperation a film team has when they've completed a film and are trying to get it 'out there', in addition to the utter faith they have in their film which of course is the absolute least filmmakers should have because if you don't believe in your own film, no one else will either. I was also cracking up during the stairs scene. Overall, a very enjoyable film.

A Masterpiece of Guerrilla Film-Making!
VCH8122 April 2020
Sundance is supposed to be the Mecca of Indie Film-making, but its doors are not open to all who wish to worship there. There's a guest list. It's a summit for the establishment. Alex Ferrari burglarizes the establishment with this "The Office" style faux doc about three delusional trespassers window-shopping a party to which they were not invited.

If "Living in Oblivion" had been made for $3,000 in four days
south_mpls23 January 2020
This movie absolutely nails what it sets out to accomplish. If you don't know anything about the making-of, it's a light comedy that sends up the indie film world. If you know about the making-of, this movie is downright astonishing.

The story is old but the way of telling it is new, which is really engaging. The characters feel genuine, the actors are loose and comfortable, and the run-and-gun cinematography is impressive. The dialogue could have used someone to punch it up -- but come on, the actors worked from an outline.

Look, if your refined palate can only tolerate the Coen brothers and Martin McDonagh, shut up and move along. This isn't for you. But if you have any interest in what's possible today in no-budget moviemaking, you will probably watch this over and over.

Pokin' Fun at the Man in the Mirror
reelswords24 January 2020
"On the Corner of Ego and Desire" is a funny glimpse into the love and lunacy that surrounds the lives of indie filmmakers and the Mecca of that world- the Sundance Film Festival. The film follows a trio of ambitious (and more than just occasionally delusional) filmmakers as they try to hustle their experimental film at Sundance. As someone who has lived in this world, it was hilarious to hear versions of so many conversations that I've had and heard from others in the industry. I found myself laughing and nodding multiple times as the characters personal lives and professional ambition continue on a downward spiral. Fun cameos and just enough heart to give a glimmer of hope. Cause that's all we need to keep going. What's even more remarkable is that this film was made for about $3,000. Amazing achievement!

Fun indie ride at Sundance
info-3534122 January 2020
Before I write this review. I need to disclose that I'm a regular listener of the director, Alex Ferrari's podcast IFH (featured in the film) and also a pro in the creative field. Not doubt, I'm the target audience and therefore partial to liking the movie. And I did like the movie a lot...

No idea what expectations the naysayers and armchair critics have of a movie that was done with an ultra-micro budget, over a couple days and undercover. Spare us the cynicism and enjoy it for what is is, or go and make your own movie. Puffychair and Funny Haha were also far from perfect but their "mumblecore" approach was endearing and created careers for the creators.

For anyone who ever wanted to go to Sundance and never did, this offers plenty of nice views of Park City and the goings-on, plus some really nice camera work, especially at the end with Julia walking in the snow at night. I've been in similar situations, trying to sell my product at trade fairs, so I can relate to the hustle of the three hapless filmmakers (and no, VoyagerMN1986, I'm not a loser filmmaker but an award winning creator in my field with over 26 years making a living in my craft).

At times the characters were a bit overplayed and the editing could have been a tighter, especially in the scene where they're trying to find the hotel room of the podcaster. Sure, one can take issue with the somewhat heavy handed ending but summa summarum I enjoyed the film and will watch it again, ESPECIALLY because of it's imperfections.

Now for a Real Review...
moviewriterlaca21 January 2020
The first reviewer stating that this film is the product of useless film programs obviously hasn't done their homework about the background of the filmmakers, nor understands the nuances of this hilarious film. Come to think of it, first reviewer aka Mr. Random, seems to have zero sense of humor whatsoever.

Now onto my review. This is a winning comedy about three hapless filmmakers who are trying to sell their completely unmarketable film to an elusive producer/sales agent. The lion's share of the movie is deftly handled by a trio of actors who shot on location, at Sundance, in the freezing cold, based on a scriptment.

98% of the film is dead on. Like any film, the pacing could have been better in sections, and the interview in the hotel with Ferrari and his intrepid trio was on shaky ground, but when you're shooting a film like this, which was totally improvised, it's a minor glitch in an otherwise very funny film, which is a comedic love letter to indie filmmakers everywhere.

Is it perfect? That's Stanley Kubrick's department, but it's definitely worth a view and anyone who understands film opposed to Random-70778 who must have been in a very bad mood when he wrote such a poison pen review.

This is what it's like to be an Indie filmmaker!
al-51911 February 2020
On the Corner of Ego and Desire is a funny, spot on depiction of the single minded, delusional thinking that all independent filmmakers have experienced at one time or another. Set at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah, a trio of filmmakers spend a day trying to find an elusive producer who has agreed to watch their film. Beautifully locations, solid performances and good pacing make it quite an enjoyable watch!

A Brilliant Little Indie Film fun and light hearted
JonnyEB23 January 2020
A Brilliant Little Indie Film fun and light hearted That Really Knows It's audience (Indie Filmmakers /artists ) it's 24 hours At Sundance Film Festival you feel their desperation just wanting to sell their movie and how delusional and hopeful they are .

It's charming and there are some real genuinely funny and also cringe worthy awkward moments It was nice to see Cameos of Alex Ferrari ( that interview was a big build up ) also a nice cameo From RB He was pretty harsh with them But after all the pretentious ramblings of the director girl through out the movie it felt justified .

I think if you're into filmmaking you'll enjoy and appreciate this film more But I think anyone could watch it and enjoy it for what it is .Really Well Done Indie film a good Length to

Comic Reflections of Indie Filmmakers
TheAll-SeeingI1 February 2020
Arguably few movie concepts can be best optimized on a micro-budget, hence the indie filmmaker's internal quest for that conceptual epiphany that can one day become fully realized for little spend. Accomplished director-screenwriter Alex Ferrari finds that idea in the mirror, and here we see him grinning back at himself with knowing self-deprecation in the excellent "On The Corner of Ego and Desire."

Three aspiring but cranially misled indie filmmakers make the holy pilgrimage to the Sundance Film Festival to source a buyer for their obvious masterpiece. This band of dreamers each manifest commonly accepted stereotypes of the indie moviemaker: The producer pinched the budget from mom's savings, the director thinks she's Oscar-bound, and the editor is a dumping ground for everyone's ills. Naiveté and hubris joyously reign supreme in this shrewdly-crafted comedy.

"On The Corner of Ego and Desire" was shot in a mockumentary style not dissimilar to the legendary "This Is Spinal Tap (1984)." And just as "Tap" can present to musicians as both hilarious and all too real, so will this one ring comically and perhaps jarringly true to indie filmmakers. Yet by flexing elite moviemaking acumen while on a limited budget, Ferrari paradoxically provides massive inspiration to that same populous he lightheartedly pokes at. This film is a surefire gold standard for those striving for big things on limited means. - (Was this review of use to you? If so, let me know by clicking "Helpful." Cheers!)

A must watch for any indie filmmaker
cbax1235 February 2020
As a filmmaker myself and fan of Indie Film Hustle I was quite excited for this film and it did not disappoint. This film tells the other story of indie filmmaking... The real story. It shows the struggles, the highs, the lows and as a filmmaker that has been though it, this film definitely captures that life and headspace. A must watch for any indie filmmaker but also a great time for anybody just looking for a fun film.

Filmmakers will appreciate the humor and drama
lbruhnca8 February 2020
Ego and Desire is an excellent title for this film because it sums up a lot about filmmakers and the industry. It's "laugh out loud" at times and, yes, it has it's dramatic moments too - filmmaking is HARD business. If you've never gone down that path, this film may give you a glimpse into the life and times of filmmakers. Obsessive, delusional, naive, full of passion, and energy, until you run out of steam. Great job to Alex and his team for creating this mockumentary about filmmaking.

This is an absolutely great doco. I think the way it was executed and the opportunism behind this project are just brilliant and so resourceful. It is entertaining, funny and gives a whole great insight into the world of filmmaking - and it is not easy! Great job Alex Ferrari.

Very enjoyable, Awesome For Filmmakers
josh-0437828 March 2020
This film was made for only $3000 which is pretty much bonkers if you've worked on films or created your own. Entertaining to watch, funny, and shot in a way that keeps things moving. And if you've never been to Sundance, it's a fun peak there as well!

Very creative style shot movie
Goingpro1214 February 2020
Bravo bravo. These filmmakers were very creative with this piece. It shows some filmmakers true passion about getting their movie bought. They go all the way to Sundance to try and sell there movie. To film a lot of this gorilla style it was well done.

"This isn't Pixar!"
Effcap17 March 2020
Ok, I very very rarely give a film 10 stars, but this one - this one. Yeah... Maybe it's because I can so relate to these characters, to their idiosyncrasies - to their dreams, their desires - their failings and yes, their egos. I KNOW these people - I have probably been each one of them at different times in my life. This is a filmmakers' film and maybe it won't resonate with those that aren't - oh F---- it - who cares - if you have a dreams i any profession - you'll have met these people and you'll laugh out loud. The girl is obviously the standout and if you're a man who's lived a bit - you've met one just like her. Or a guy just like her. They bring out the sun and then claim the rays are their own. You hate em' - you love em' - the world is less exciting without them. Alex has done a great job infiltrating one the gold standards of festivals. I've unfortunately not been to Park City, not been "invited" as well, but now I at least know what it looks like! Many many memorable lines in this film and I honestly laughed through the entire balcony scene with the producer. How he didn't crack up I'll never know. Highly highly recommend.

Fun, bizarre, and true
caseykilloran4 February 2020
With the backdrop of the Sundance Film Festival this film is a fun inside look of how bizarre the indie film world can be. I thought the character were really developed. It felt like a real documentary at times. The over the top scenarios these filmmakers find themselves in are also very relatable. Almost hard to watch at times because of this. A good movie to watch if you are working weight a micro budget! Great job!

Would love to see a film with the three main actors again!
jasonfreeman906 December 2020
I found the film to be interesting, informative, and enjoyable. The three main characters were likable enough to feel for them as they faced obstacles. I also found myself rooting for their ultimate success, in whatever form that might take.

In regard to each of the performances, while Julia can be annoying at times with her lack of self-awareness, she also embodies the dreams of millions of real people who have headed to Hollywood to make a name for themselves. The actress also seems aware of her characters faults, and this works comedically. Lorenzo is adorable. His naivete is endearing and you root for him as well. And you feel for Johnny who is having a really bad day, and who, unlike Lorenzo and Julia, seem to be fully aware of everything is happening.

I also liked seeing what Sundance is "really like". I've never been to Park City, but plan to go at some point. This film seems like this it might be pretty close to the experience of a lot of film makers or attendees who aren't one of the big wigs who are showing off their critically acclaimed film.

The one big negative I have for the film is the scene with Robert Peters, where he comes across as really angry. I won't say anymore to avoid giving away any spoilers, but I feel that the scene could have accomplished it's goal without coming across as a tirade.

Another small critique I have for the film is that it feels a little incomplete. While I enjoyed the experience of watching the film. I felt like there was a story before or after Sundance that could add some context to the story. In other words, I felt like the experience of the trio at Sundance could have been the beginning or end of another film, depending on what message the filmmaker wants to leave with us.

Overall I would highly recommend this film. I hope to see the three main actors together in something else in the future, maybe even a sequel examining what happens to the trio after Sundance.
