"You're Being Used!"
lavatch12 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This sixth episode has been the best in the series because it introduces the fascinating character of Walter Cruz's mother. The mother has become suspicious that her son is being held against his will. As a savvy schoolteacher, the mother discovers that Homecoming is not an offshoot of the VA, but a private organization called The Geist Emergent Group that is the business of making drain cleaning solution!

The mom uses her ingenuity to locate the Homecoming facility outside of Tampa and pays a visit to Walter. It is clear by now that Walter has become emotionally attached to Heidi, who has a mutual attraction to him. We learn as well that the vets at Homecoming are being administered an experimental drug. If Walter were to leave four weeks into the program, he could have a catastrophic reaction. But instead of listening to the good counsel of his mother, he decides to stay in the treatment center. The mother then files the complaint with the DOD that Carrasco has been investigating.

In the "half-screen" scenes in the present, the smooth-talking Colin (calling himself Hunter) locates Heidi at a laundromat. He then puts on the charm and seduces the vulnerable and wounded Heidi! In the best line in the episode, Walter's mother tells him, "You're being used!" But the same line could apply to the gullible Heidi Bergman.

There will probably be some people that do not like this episode because it finally gave us some developments, but it was necessary. There is a snail pace for TV shows (ala Mad Men) and then there is this. Homecoming needed this episode.

Still not great, but long overdue.

CHEER! - (7 stars out of 10)

The stage curtains open ...

"Homecoming - Season 1, Episode 6: Toys" was an eye-opener, that's for sure. Some interresting developments take place, some good, some that will get under your skin a little bit. But, all-in-all, this is yet another solid episode that helps to uncover a bit more, and keeps us moving toward the inevitable conclusion.

In the present day, Colin conveniently bumps into Heidi at the local laundry and strikes up a conversation with her in the hopes that he can find out just how much she remembers. He poses as a soldier coming home named Hunter - and she falls for his act - hook, line and sinker. Back in the past, Walter's Mom shows up uninvited with the full intention of bring her son home - but, when things don't go her way, she places a call to the Dept. Of Defense complaint line.

The one thing I was hoping wouldn't happen in this episode as the story continued on, happened. It upset me a little, but I could see why they did it. I just hope that justice is served in the end, because it needs to be now. I thought that Marianne Jean-Baptiste was phenomenal in her role as Walter's Mom. She nailed it. She brought a sense of urgency to the story that I was not expecting.

This is one of the best shows I've seen. Usually by the mid-way point, things get shaken up so they can build off what they have presented already into a grand finale. This episode did that, but not in a bad way. It was well handled, and now I am ready to move forward. 7 stars out of 10.
