CHEER! - (8 stars out of 10)

The stage curtains open ...

"Homecoming - Season 1, Episode 4: Redwood" continues the mystery and intrigue very effectively. This is kind of like a chapter play for adults ... where each episode leaves you hanging with just enough to carry you over until the next one. I am thoroughly enjoying this show - different from what I expected, but better than what I anticipated.

We start off by watching a red berry being gathered from some foreign, exotic plant and then processed into what looked like a serum, and then transported to Homecoming, care of Geist, the parent company. Walter sees the staff removing Shrier's belongings and cleaning out his room, so he confronts Heidi, visibly upset and worried for his friend. She is able to calm him down and get him to open up about a trip he had planned to Yosemite when he was younger. Meanwhile, in the present day, Carrasco hunts down Heidi's former boss, Colin, and when confronted, Colin denies everything, feigning ignorance. Heidi locates her old phone and finds Colin's number in there and calls him ...

I love, love, love the intrigue in this show. It seems with each passing episode that the more clues they provide, the more questions that are raised - and I love it. This show is right up my alley, and I wish I had discovered it sooner.

This episode scores a strong 8 stars out of 10. All the characters are well thought out and developed inside a good story. The production values are high, and the experience and chemistry onscreen is genuine. I highly recommend this episode, as well as everything else up to this point.

Redwood

Warning: Spoilers
I think the show is trying to go for a classy Broadway play kind of vibe moreso than an engaging TV program. The problem is that the dialogue is not sharp enough and unless there is a major twist heading our way the show isn't good enough.

I am intrigued, but just not loving it right now.

The Plot Thickens, but the Pace Drags

Warning: Spoilers
In this fourth episode, the Redwood of the title is the division of the Geist Corporation that was responsible for the operation of the "Homecoming" center. In the opening scene, we witness the delivery of drugs to the Geist center. The bright red pills seem sinister.

Carrasco has been successful in locating the Geist headquarters, and he has a brief conversation with the mysterious Colin, the supervisor of Heidi, who now professes no memory of the Homecoming, when questioned by Carrasco. In his research, Carrasco has learned that on the day that Walter Cruz committed a violent action, Heidi Bergman left her job at Homecoming. Are the two incidents related?

Heidi has also been successful in dredging up from her blocked memory the name of Colin. She has retrieved a cell phone from her belongings and places a phone call to Colin, who hangs up. Heidi has also learned that she was hospitalized, but recalls none of the circumstances.

This episode is once again padded with long conversations between Heidi and Walter. Their meandering talks lead nowhere and slow down the pace of the film
