CHEER! - (8 stars out of 10)

The stage curtains open ...

"Homecoming - Season 1, Episode 3: Optics" ups the ante a little bit. I found this episode to be almost Twilight Zone-ish meets film noir which I will explain in further detail below. So far, this has been the most intriguing episode, and something tells me it is only going to continue to grow and get better.

Our present day investigator, Thomas Carrasco, decides to continue his investigation and hits the archived files on site, hoping to gain more insight into Homecoming and its employees. Back in the past, Shrier steals a company van so he can drive into town and prove his theory to be correct. Against his better judgment, Walter goes with him. They drive into the night only to find a retirement settlement, but Shrier sees enough around him to believe he might've been wrong after all. We are also clued into the fact that they are administering medication to the soldiers through their meals without their knowledge. Heidi ends her relationship with her boyfriend in a bad way and he moves out, but then in the modern day, they meet again for drinks where she confesses she can't remember anything from that time.

I loved this episode. It's ususually around this time, the 3rd and 4th episode where a series really starts to gain some momentum, and it certainly has here. The scene where Shrier and Walter are driving down an isolated highway in the middle of the night gave me a definite Twilight Zone vibe, and with Carrasco digging around in boxes of files in the center of a dark catacomb of shelved cases gave me that film noir feel.

This is a good series. I am 100% completely invested now into the story, the characters, and the mystery that is lying somewhere underneath it all. I rate this episode at a higher 8 stars out of 10 - and I can't wait to get started on the next one.

I feel like I'm watching a 60's era spy thriller with Gene Hackman. It's as though Hitchcock got a drone and shot this episode. The scene with the van on the road out of town? Amazing.

Style Over Substance

Warning: Spoilers
The content of the third episode of "Homecoming" is beginning to be eclipsed by the style. It is getting overly routine to have the "half screen" for scenes in the present and "full screen" for scenes in the past.

For the main character Heidi, it is now now apparent that she has been brainwashed of her experience as an administrator of the Homecoming center. Because she seems so vacuous, the more interesting character in this episode is Carrasco. His search for the Homecoming files that includes the discovery of details about Heidi was the best sequence in the episode.

The weakest scene was the lengthy excursion taken by Shrier and Cruz, who end up in a "retirement community." It would appear that the geographical area surrounding the Homecoming facility could be anywhere, and the vets are part of a top secret program in mind control. It is an elaborate and sophisticated mind control operation.

The strangest character thus far is Colin, the wacko who is supervising Heidi and calling shots on the mind control of the vets. He is not really a mad scientist, but rather a narcissistic bureaucrat.

Will Heidi be able to retrieve her memory? Will her ex-boyfriend, whom she essentially dumped, be able to assist her in reconstructing the past? Or, is Heidi Bergman destined to remain forever a waitress at Fat Morgan's?

Thomas is an interesting character. Not full-doofus, but not really the kind of investigator that you usually is.

The problem with this show is that there is about five minutes of interesting content and then a lot of weird music and time wasting to fill out the rest of the half hour.
