Its good because its bad
jonathanrspalding1 March 2018
I have to say I enjoyed royal hearts. Is it stupid, yes. Has this been done before, yes. I know it is awful, but I could not help myself.

I would say the best way to describe the movie as King Ralph, mixed with the Princess Diaries II, and the Beverly Hillbillies episodes where Jed was an Earl.

One of my favorite part of the movie is the party scenes and how the extras looked and acted in the back ground. I also enjoyed the earnest of all the characters in light of the absolutely insipid plot and dialogue.

However, I would recommend to those of us who like the Hallmark genre to watch this once, you will enjoy it.

Hallmark have done a lot of royal-themed films and the quality of them has really varied. Some being surprisingly good, some watchable if rather average and some really bad. Have watched many Hallmark films with very mixed expectations prior to watching and 2018's 'Royal Hearts' was one of those. James Brolin is always worth watching and is one of those actors who has been in a lot of mediocre at best stuff but has always made the most of what he's given. Have yet to properly warm to Cindy Busby.

'Royal Hearts' is one of the watchable if average royal-themed Hallmark films, though it is only down to a couple of the good things being so good that it is at that standard. If they weren't as good as they were, 'Royal Hearts' in my mind would have actually been pretty weak because the worst of the flaws do not come off well at all. Hallmark has certainly done far worse before and particularly since, but they have also done much better (including from 2018).

The best thing about 'Royal Hearts' is Brolin, who is completely endearing, fun to watch and very refreshing as by far the most interesting character in the film and seemed to really enjoy doing the film. Doing so without being too dominant. Also really liked the production values, especially the pretty gorgeous scenery.

Did find some of the music pleasant. Brolin's character was the one with the most life and the only really interesting one, due to him being the only one to not feel too stock or much typical Hallmark cliche level.

Cannot say the same for the rest of the cast. Some have praised Busby, but this reviewer has to disagree respectfully and sadly. She does have some moments of genuine charm and she doesn't phone in, but on the whole she came over as too affected and over eager. Didn't care for her character either, dishonesty and manipulation are really not appealing traits and they are overdone here and it didn't feel like she learned from her mistakes. Andrew Cooper is bland and forgettable in a milk toast-like role, while also going a little too far on the arrogance. Of the characters, only Brolin's interests or endears.

On the whole, the chemistry was not convincing. There are moments with Busby and Brolin but the romantic relationship is really underdeveloped, to the point that it feels like there wasn't one in the first place. The script is often really cheesy, with more howlers and groaners than one can count, and quite stilted. The story is hackneyed and formulaic, with no surprises at all and a lot of ridiculousness. Looking at the plot summary, it looks like the film tries to do something different but anything that sounds different is very conventional Hallmark in execution. All of the faults mentioned can be found in the first 15 minutes alone.

In summary, thank goodness for Brolin being as good as he was because the terrible writing for Busby's character and the every bit as poorly written story would have been a chore if he wasn't there. Watchable but very average and nothing special. 5/10.

Not bad!
RodrigAndrisan23 March 2021
It's better than I expected it to be. Usually, the Americans go to film in Romania, because it's much cheaper, when they have bad scenarios. This time, the script isn't really bad, either on the contrary. And Romania is beautiful anyway. James Brolin is funny, and Cindy Busby is nice.

Montana cowboy ends up King of a very small European country.
TxMike31 January 2019
My wife and I watched this movie at home on DVD from our public library. It is one of three movies on one disc, a collection called "Royal Wedding Collection". The other two movies feature Meghan Markle.

James Brolin, probably 76 or 77 during filming, is Hank Pavlik, very content on his Montana ranch. But he gets news that he has inherited some property in Europe and his arm is twisted to make him go see it.

As it turns out the property is a very small country and he is now their King. At first he doesn't want any part of it but then finds out the people there need some help. Plus the neighbouring equally small kingdom is hatching a plan to acquire them. Plus he meets a lady bartender who likes fishing as well as he does.

The other side story is very typical of Hallmark movies, Hank's very single and very attractive daughter is pursued by two men, one that we can all see is wrong for her, the other we can all see would be ideal for her, and she has to juggle their attention until she figures it all out.

Just a lightweight but entertaining and enjoyable rom-com. Brolin is very good, a lesser actor could not have made it as interesting as he did.

Dad was the best part!
hallmarkmov26 January 2022
If it wasn't for the dad, I would have turned this off within the first 10 minutes. The actress who plays kelly is exactly the same in everything I have seen her in, naive, annoying, and talks far too much. She was very misleading and manipulative towards her dad at the start of the movie. The cowboy like dad was great! He stole every scene and had the best acting in this movie. Wish there was more shots of the beautiful landscape!

5 Stars for James Brolin!
Nappos527 May 2021
I really do LOVE Hallmark movies but I'm with others in hoping that HM gets Cindy Busby a voice/speech coach. I'm not trying to be mean but the nasal voice really gets to me. I sounded the same way in 4th grade following a tonsillectomy and with a bit of speech therapy, managed to overcome it. I'm sure with a little work that she can too! Good luck to you Cindy!

Really? What's your problem with love?
deburt6 May 2018
If you don't like love and romance, simply don't watch the Hallmark channel movies. It's sad that some of those out there are so unhappy with their own lives, they have to be haters.

It is only February 2018, but is possible this is HM's flop of the year!
Victor-J-196411 March 2018
Montana rancher Hank Pavlik (James Brolin) inherits a estate in a fictional European country, and reluctantly becomes the King of the country.

Hank's daughter Kelly (Cindy Busby) is his daughter that stars along side of Alex (Andrew Cooper) the estates groundskeeper.

This is the most disappointing HM movie of the year, it had so much potential to be funny....... but it wasn't. The script is poor which required the actors to over act, and it is obvious that it prevented them from being even good. The chemistry between the leads is very poor.

The charming heroine makes this one barely bearable
rebekahrox2 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Cute and likable Cindy Busby accounts for almost all of my stars with one star reserved for the male lead. Royal Hearts is an extremely hackneyed plot which presents no surprises, twists, or suspense. It strictly follows the template set forth in innumerable Royal themed romances. Fish out of water heroine and in this case, her Dad, shakes up the royal protocol, is briefly seduced by a royal handsome bad guy, but ends up with the "poor" commoner she had a meet cute with at the beginning after rubbing each other the wrong way throughout most of the movie. Oh. And the kingdom gains its independence thanks to the Americans. I started out looking forward to seeing James Brolin, but he quickly out-wore his welcome with his over the top impression of Sam Elliot. It was kinda funny that the first scene in the movie is Cindy teaching Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, which intentionally or unintentionally hearkens back to her breakthrough role as Elizabeth in Unleashing Mr. Darcy.

Worse than usual
caseybones27 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Bad enough it follows the insipid Hallmark formula about castles and kings- rich boyfriend is a heel, poor boyfriend is a jewel, down home folk showing taking over the castle and saving the day. Then throw in a good ol' boy cowboy (who wears his battered hat at all times which a real cowboy knows is not correct) who single-handed saves the independence of a whole country and saves his daughters happiness as well. Throw in dogs and horses and ponies and you've seen it all already. I'd give it a one except for the scenery.

Enjoyable way to pass time
Jenan7729 May 2019
I loved James Brolin in this movie. His character is completely endearing. Cindy Busby is quickly becoming one of my favorite Hallmark actresses. She has a girl next door quality and is very relatable. The barbecue scene at the end with the silly dancing literally made me laugh out loud. Silly, but it was a pleasant escape from the real world. I can't ask for any more than that. I would love a sequel.

Love the dad!
hallmarkmov26 January 2022
If it wasn't for the dad I would have turned this movie off in the first 10 minutes. The main actress is the same in every movie: arrogant, snobby, naive, annoying, and always plays the "I'm always right" character who's doing a doctorate and someone is getting a job at Oxford for reading books from one author. The dad was such a great character and made the typical royal family movie very special. Kelly was so manipulative and flat out lies to her dad. I really hated that part and she didn't even apologize. I loved the landscape shots and wished there was more- It's such a beautiful location!

Really?
toncincin15 April 2018
I hate Hallmark "royal movies." The plots are bad. The accents ridiculous. The vountry names even more. Just stop! Cindy Busby? Her acting is terrible. No growth whatsoever. Felt like I was watching Ashley on Heartland. At least James Brolin provides some comic relief in this one,

Cute movie
NicoletteSteele19 August 2018
This was a really cute movie. If you don't enjoy this one then you shouldn't watch the Hallmark channel. The movies are tropey and this one is no exception. The cast was the best I've seen at Hallmark and I really hope James Brolin films other movies for them. He cinematography was great and the location shoots were spectacular. This goes down as one of my favorites.

Why the English accent?
gaaradragon17 October 2018
The movie was meh, I couldn't comprehend why they would hunt some random guy who actually have no came to the throne due to the fact that he is so distantly related to anyone who does have a claim. Why does everyone in the movie have and English accent apart from the two Americans? I couldn't sit through it all , I got probably halfway the fact the no-one had a accent from any region of Europe just annoyed the hell out of me!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Royal Hearts is a 2018 made for TV Hallmark film starring James Brolin and Andrew Cooper. A young woman named Kelly is stunned to find that her father played by James Brolin is the next heir to the throne in Morocco. While in Morocco Kelly meets two suitors one a charming rodeo while the other an egocentric prince named Nicholas who wants to marry Kelly. So who will Kelly choose?.

This film is also produced and directed by James Brolin(who was in that godawful The Master Of Disguise) and his married to Barbara Streisand.

Corny humor, weak script, subpar acting, casting all over the place (I mean, pick an accent, please). Just all around bad.

Come on! It's a Hallmark movie and I enjoyed it!
smithduke29 March 2018
Yes, the storyline has been done before but who cares? James Brolin was entertaining as a grumpy cattle rancher. Alex the stable handler was easy on the eyes and ears. If you like Hallmark movies, you'll enjoy this. So many negative reviews but I'm guessing they are not Hallmark fans. Give this movie a try. You just might like it.

slow to begin but more conflict at the end
novagirl1123 March 2019
The plot was a bit slow but yet the romance seemed to move too fast. It was sorta funny to watch Josh Brolin in this, but something about Cindy Busby bothered me. However, I did appreciate that the climax/conflict scene was more dramatic than usual for a Hallmark movie.

Best Hallmark movie of the year. Loved the plot with the King being for the people and the daughter realizing what was important in life. Excellent job on this one.

Horrible, No Surprise
TheFearmakers18 October 2018
This has the same plot as the John Goodman vehicle King Ralph, only the part about a reluctant American... here played by James Brolin as an everyman (albeit very old man) Montana ranch-hand... takes backseat, and maybe it shouldn't because the mainline of his daughter's romance with yet another hollow Hallmark hunk is for the birds, and they have a bad flu.
