Arrest Everyone
nogodnomasters2 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Vladimir is a cat and a spy who has a lot of collateral damage. It is forced to team up with Hector, a techno-rat in order to recover a rare mineral. They take jobs at a hospital in order to find the bad guys.

There are animals in the film who don't take and are simply animals. The overall theme is stopping global warming. They don't blame anyone for it. There are some inter-species relationships that start to bloom between a cat and a rabbit and a rat and a bee. Not sure what the message is there. There is a twist that is bigger than what you might see in a film written by Steven Seagal.

A copy of Zootopia, and a bad one too
0w08 March 2020
China... they do some things very good (like food, trains and building skyscrapers), but one thing they suck at, is copying things... This is one of those examples.

Where Zootopia is a 10/10 animation movie, this is only a 4/10. A poor attempt, with inferior animation, bad voice acting, bad 'jokes' and a predictable plot. Maybe they should stick to food, or just hire a better EVERYTHING next time they think about making a movie.

Interesting storyline
gossettng31 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
While there are elements within this movie that are controversial: interspecies relationships and accidental deaths with no sense of real retribution, the storyline is nicely paced and the voice acting is on point. What may not be issues for certain people and/or cultures may be turn offs for others. There are good elements such as personal redemption, friendship, and a higher purpose in life. It makes you stop and wonder about the choices you make and how it could possibly affect others, making you think before you take action not just vlubdly follow your own ambitions...

The Cheap Chinese Knock-Off of Zootopia
cascadiarch13 February 2020
I guess it was inevitable but jeeze. I was really hoping it'd have better writing and production values than this. From the characters to the world itself, there's absolutely nothing to connect with if you've already seen better films that do everything it's trying to do.

Chinese Zootopia Rip-Off
jeremycrimsonfox15 February 2020
Spycies is another anthromorphic animal movie trying to bank off the success of Zootopia. A tale about a secret agent cat named Vladamir Willis who is set to an off-site platform security as discipline after a mission causes destruction, he meets a rat name Hector, a hacker who made the place messy. However, their future with the agency ends up on the line when the platform is broken into by henchmen of an evil genius and steal a substance from the area while they argue about a soap opera.

Yeah, so basically what we have here is a Chinese film that is basically rips off elements from Zootopia. The relationship between Vladamir and Hector is basically more uneasy than Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde's, as they basically bicker and argue about anything. Also, the story is messed up, with a third wheel, a bee girl name Mia, an actress who forces herself on the mission to help her learn about being a spy for an upcoming role, using her title of princess as an excuse to make them bring her, which is horrible, as she is only there to be annoying as she acts like a diva. The story is boring, and the film lacks the heart that Zootopia had. Also, there is some swearing in this.

Warning: Spoilers
It's fun to see with your family. Starts with a cheap begining but it gets better with a few plot twists, a good animation quality, the story it just gets better and better. Didn't notice the resemblance from zootopia.

Very entertaining.

Boring, Scatterbrained, Cheap Zootopia Knock-Off
noro-4610717 February 2020
It's been said before but this movie is just a Zootopia knock-off. It's boring and has horribly dry dialogue. I don't recommend this to ANYONE, not even anyone with kids.

Zootopia rip-off - NO! In the same world as - YES!!
ulrichburke2 January 2021
I can understand WHY it gets compared to Zootopia - it's in the same world, definitely. But why can't there be more than one bunny and more than one 'cool' lead character - the joke with the cat is he's not as good as he thinks he is in the beginning, but he sure redeems himself by the end!

The animal animation was a LEETLE clunky but the backgrounds are gorgeous. They're worth watching the movie for. I loved the city, the machinery, the cars and the spheres in the Ecodome towards the end of the film, the details of the plants and flowers, whoever did the backgrounds put every bit of him/herself into it and the results really show. They're lovely!

The characters are a LEETLE 2-D but hey - it's a kid's movie. It's not trying to be sophisticated like Zootopia, it's trying to be fun and it really succeeds. The flow of the plot could have been pulled together somewhat but all the parts were there. I loved the snake/dragon, but I wish they'd used him more. Maybe as an ongoing character with the blue cat and Hector the Rat? But that's a sorta minor thing - I could've happily watched everyday life in the city and in the world for 90 minutes and not had any other plot at all, if it had been an openworld video game I'd just happily live within it all. THAT'S where this film scores - its world is gorgeous.

Y'know - if there was a choice between making a Zootopia sequel or a Spycies sequel, I'd make a Spycies 2 movie like an old-fashioned, hard-boiled-detective movie starring the cat and the rabbit, with Hector doing the Q-from-James-Bond thing with all the gadgets. Just to give the background team free rein to let the cat explore every inch of that lovely city, and the ecospheres. Did I enjoy it? Plot clunkinesses aside, yes, every moment of it and I was just watching it by myself.

Don't compare it to anything. Take it for what it is, its own movie, as much a 'rip off' of Zootopia as The Mandalorian is a 'rip off' of Star Wars. They're both set in pre-created worlds, yet they're both their own beings. You'll be glad you saw this world, I know I was.

Chris.

Bad Chinese propaganda
Fl4m3Ph03n1x13 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Some people say this is a zootopia cheap copy. Those people are wrong. Unfortunately, this movie is far worse than that.

The story starts with a duo that hate each other for no apparent reason and then love for no apparent reason.

The plot is filled with CPD (convinient plot device) after CPD, so obvious, that you don't even need to know what a CPD is to understand something completely random just happened to force the story forward, because the writers lacked the ability to make the story progress naturally.

But what annoyed me the most was the blatant Chinese propaganda in the form of ancient Chinese dragons and other events that clearly do not belong in the universe of the story but were forcefully introduced.

Horrible movie. Would not recommend.

You cannot get bored.
nieXas2 February 2020
Despite some Russian and Chinese references, this is a good and easy movie for all ages. While the start of the movie wasnt very promising, it does get better. It has some deep message about climate change, some adult jokes, great soundtrack and super realistic animation. I would give it 7/10, but giving 10 because of low other reviews.

My children were entertained and I wasnt bored most of the movie. Thats enough.

I don't think it was that bad.
ballesterosyehan14 January 2023
Yeah, I expected to be disappointed but I somehow wasn't. The story itself was okay, the film had comedic elements, and the background & environment looked like what you'd see in a top-tier Pixar, Disney, or Blue Sky Studios film. It was a nice film, at least for me, even though it slightly resembled Zootopia. And for a Chinese-French animated film, it was actually good!

I don't think the film is perfect though, there were some things in the film that just didn't sit right with me. Not everything was bad though, but something definitely pissed me off regarding the film's animation. The animation itself was pretty fine, it was smooth, sometimes it would look jagged but overall it was fine. But the complete lack of motion blurring made me so mad. There were SO MANY scenes that just LACKED MOTION BLUR. Sure, it wasn't a huge deal, but it made me angry because the scenes looked super ugly when there were no motion blurring in the shots.

Every other animated film only had a few scenes with no motion blur, but like 75% (probably inaccurate) of this entire film didn't have motion blur. It just looked so ugly and raw! But other than that, I enjoyed the film.

You gotta be using a pram to enjoy this.
SlightlyMe3 March 2020
Dunno really what to say... animation great, as it should be 2019. Story: It's not so much as a bad story as a collection of completely pointless things, pointless characters, doing pointless things, for pointless reasons centered around a leading character.

I can only recommend this to someone not old enough to read recommendations.

Unfortunately, a Hollywood influence!
rsvp32118 April 2020
I didn't think American liberal activists could be responsible for ruining a China/France production.

This started off so well, then started to show signs of social agenda indoctrination and messages, instead of a decent plot. Ridiculously blaming global warming for the extinction of mammoths, is the whole movie.

Hopefully, the next one they create will have writers for ideas, not activists.

A film where everything from a child's brain was included
martyn-hood20 January 2023
The writers included ALL the children in China and France to submit ideas for a spy film. The producers couldn't decide which ideas they liked and said everyone was a winner and included every idea into the film. I had no idea what was going on.

I spent the majority of the film trying to figure out whether the large animals were shrunk, or if the insects were enlarged. That's an idea of how mind numbingly tedious this film is.

And after a period of sitting in the dark coming to terms with what just happened I'm still no wiser.

Some parting advice for film makers. Just because you can, it does not mean you should.

Highly enjoyable, great action adventure for all ages!
beastwarsfan9 November 2020
I watched "Spycies" with my 9 year old daughter and we both enjoyed it quite a bit. I can honestly say that I wasn't bored for a minute and I'd even gladly give "Spycies" another watch after some time.

When it comes to Chinese CG animated films I can clearly see why people are cautious and somehow prejudiced. There have been numerous badly animated, borderline unwatchable rip-offs and mash-ups of popular western hits by Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, Blue Sky, etc. Well, I'm happy to say that "Spycies" is not one of them, even if being an action-thriller with anthropomorphic animal characters it surely bears some obvious similarities to Zootopia, but hey, it surely is not a copycat. "Spycies" is its own thing and it is awesome!

The animation quality is high above average, the character designs, the machines and the environments are really something. The action sequences are stylish and dynamic. But what makes it a great watch are the likable characters, the comic relief hits the mark, and the plot is intriguing, with some nice twists and turns. The villain is properly motivated and the reveal who's behind it all is surely a surprise for the younger audience.

It's not the very best animated film out there, but it certainly deserves more credit and the current IMDb rating is below 6, which I think is not really fair. If you're a fan of anthropomorphic heroes such as "Blacksad", "Biker Mice from Mars", "Zootopia", "DuckTales", etc. you should give it a try.

Beautiful animated movie.
markthepig-948746 October 2020
I dont get how people call this a rip off from a well kown american studio animated movie (just because protagonists are animals and a rabbit that looks similar to that movie?) , You are over reacting. Animation is nice , movie its funny and has a nice story to it. Really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Not only usa can do nice animated movies France , china , spain , germany has nice nice animated movies with a much much lower buget than usa productions. Tale your head out of the "sand" and dont act like a brainwashed nation.

A good original story
global-user15 February 2020
This movie is really good fun. It's great, safe family fare, with some interesting elements not usually found in Disney movies.

The plot involves some clever twists and turns, but continues to absorb, including some contemporary topics such as the environment.

I loved the inclusion of the rat / cat pair, and retro gaming & tech references. The voice actors did really well and helped to create some endearing characters.

People who compare this to Zootopia / Zootropolis are being quite unfair as similarities are very superficial and this story is certainly original enough to enjoy in its own right.

Go watch it, you won't be disappointed!

Great movie
ItsCN5 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It was a great movie, kinda felt like zootopia 2. Plotline was great, but I have a doubt when that mammoth knows that Vladimir is a good detective, why would he assign him to this case where the mammoth himself is the killer? He could've just given the case to someone Dumber and he would've got what he wanted. And the case would've been closed after few years.. don't you think? 😜
