Solid Thriller
claudio_carvalho3 May 2020
The notorious kingpin Antonio Padín (Xan Cejudo) checks in a nursing home under the care of the nurse Mario (Luis Tosar), whose wife Julia (María Vázquez) is pregnant. When Padín's son Toño (Ismael Martínez) and Kiko (Enric Auquer) make a deal with the Colombian cartel without the agreement of their father, they are double crossed by the Chinese mafia and have to pay a large amount to the cartel. Meanwhile Mario plots revenge against Padín, since his younger brother was a victim of his drugs. When Padín learns Mario's intention, he also plots revenge against Mario.

"Quien a hierro mata", a.k.a. "Eye for an Eye", is a solid thriller directed by Paco Plaza. The story of revenge is very well disclosed and the conclusion is heartbreaking. The performances are magnificent but the film is not for everyone. My vote is seven.

"Do you feel sorry for junkies?".
DimitrisPassas-TapTheLine30 January 2020
Eye For An Eye is a Spanish vengeance story directed by Paco Plaza (REC, Veronica) and, even though no one can claim that it is a genre-defining crime/thriller, it both entertains and emotionally touches the audience. When a drug-lord patriarch, Antonio, is released from prison due to health issues, he chooses to live in a sanatorium for the rest of his days rather than his house as his relationship with his two kids, Kiko and Toño is strained. Mario is a male nurse in the nursing home that Antonio will be living from now on and he takes over Antonio's case and becomes his personal aid. But Mario has a tragic past that is connected to Antonio's former business as his brother, a heroin user and one of Antonio's pushers, committed suicide 25 years ago. Now Mario has the ultimate chance to exact his revenge from the person that he hates most in this world and who is responsible for the shaping of his stoic and meek personality. Mario begins poisoning the old man by putting bleach to his food and by injecting heroin to his veins every night. Antonio soon becomes totally paralyzed and even unable to speak so Mario's work become all the easier. The premise of the story is formulaic as it brings to mind many other revenge crime films, but the strength of this film generates not from its over-elaborate plot but rather from the complexity and truthfulness of the characters. Luis Tosar gives a magnificent performance as Mario, lending subtlety and esoterical tension to the character who is also the main protagonist of the story. Xan Cejudo is decent in the role of Antonio while in the case of the two brothers, Kiko and Toño, we can detect a gap between the quality of the performances given by Enric Auger and Ismael Martinez. While the second is measured and solemn, Auger seems to over-act his role, but perhaps this is an unfair assessment as Kiko's role is supposed to be a little over-the-top. I didn't like María Vázquez's acting as Mario's pregnant wife, Julia, but this may be due to my indifference over her character. The interaction sequences between the couple are -more or less- tedious but they also act as an intermission to the events of the plot.

Eye For An Eye is a slow-burning picture that will disappoint those who expect a Hollywood-like revenge movie and fans of Kill Bill should steer clear. Nevertheless, there are some nice action scenes that pick up the tempo, while there is also a certain amount of disturbing imagery and I'm referring to the Kiko's prison sequences. There is a well-placed and effective plot twist in the end but the final few minutes are somehow disturbing and then the film ends abruptly, leaving the viewer feeling a bit annoyed. If I had to rate the movie, I would give it a 6,5/10. It is definitely not among the best Spanish crime film exports of the last years but it will keep you glued to the screen and offer you some very nice moments.

A downbeat and twisted thiller about a nurse exacts a merciless vendetta with a lot of twists and turns
ma-cortes11 October 2019
Dark thriller with tension , suspense , twists and turns . The film is set in Cambados, Pontevedra (Galicia; northwest to Spain), there lives the legendary Galician drug dealer Antonio Padín (Xan Cejudo) and his delinquent sons (Ismael Martínez and Enric Auqueris) . Antonio is detained , incarcerated , but pardoned from the prison due to humanitarian reasons, after to have a terminal disease . His two sons, older and more intelligent Toño (Ismael Martinez) and younger and more violent Kiko (Enric Auquer), despising them openly in the belief that they two will ruin the family business. In the old people residence Antonio meets Mario, he is a prestigious nurse living in Cambados who expects his first baby with his six months pregnant wife Julia (Maria Valverde) ; however , Mario pretends to care Antonio worsening his health . Mario results to be a relentless avenger , he is broken by pain , rage and impotence for some deeds from his sad past and attempts to exact a revenge against the nasty peddlers . But Mario doesn't counts with Antonio's evil to pay Mario's cares. As Mario cares Antonio by day, but makes him sick by night as retribution. But he makes a difficult decision, to take justice on his own hands . Nevertheless , the merciless vendetta against drug pushers and drug sealers , leading to unexpected consequences . Then Mario begins his own investigations about the identity of three Capos of dope , father and children , and relentlessly attempts to carry out an implacable vendetta, then doing the right thing in this movie means choosing a side .

This is a thrilling and bleak Spanish film with high doses of suspense , busting police operation , chases , intrigue , plot twists , blood , and violence . Dealing with a few characters interwoven each other , such as : A drug dealer looking for rest, a nurse looking for revenge and two ominous siblings who attempt to take the control of the busines . This stirring story is filmed in slow-moving , following a similar realist and dark style to former successful films directed by Paco Plaza . While the look is suitable sinister and intriguing, the plot spreads to the surprising breaking point , including an unexpected final that turns out to be a little frustrating. Tragedies , frantic action , pursuits and turns abound as when Julia learns about Mario's new patient, causing a sudden bleeding that puts the unborn baby in risk ; at the same time, Toño and Kiko make a deal with a Chinese mob named Mrs. Kong in cooperation with a Colombian drug cartel, but things get awry . There stands out Luis Tosar giving a magnificent interpretation as a nursery chief and personal assistant , being really motivated by the vengeance . As the nurse acts as judge , jury and executioner , Charles Bronson-alike . Tosar plays splendidly the dutiful , stoic personal assstant and a man of few words, however, as the movie progresses we see layers to him, a man on the edge trying to balance . He has come face to face with violence within him spurred on by a violent act done long time ago , concerning an addict relative who died by overdose. The bond between nurse and his old patient is captured on screen, in contrast to his distant spouse who in her own way is trying to do the right thing ; despite Julia's request to Mario for leaving his revenge, he is unable to stop until see Antonio dead . The ending is a question in itself, what does vigilante justice really amount to, it is a matter of perspective is it not? . It is worth a viewing, only for the brilliant acting by Luis Tosar , it is sad to see the rest of the supporting cast could not match up to his on screen presence aside from perhaps the wife acted by Maria Valverde who did not have much dialogue either, perhaps intentional. Here the veteran Luis Tosar is well accompanied by a fine support cast , such as : Xan Cejudo as the aging, weak and ill Antonio who goes freely into a seniors residence instead to go his home with his sons . And the unsettling Ismael Martínez gives overacting as Toño who tries too free his brother from the jail , hurry up to save before being killed and aggressive Enric Auquer as Kike who goes wrong when the Colombian cartel demands him the lost money .

It packs a shading and adequate cinematography by Pablo Rosso , Paco Plaza's regular . Shot in location in Cambados, Pontevedra, and A Coruña, Galicia, Spain . Including a thrilling and screeching musical score by Maika Makovski . The motion picture was professional , though slowly paced by Paco Plazas .He is an expert on rare and terrifying atmosphere . Paco along with by Jaume Balaguero are the main Spanish filmmakers expert on terror cinema , both of whom have realized the box-office big successes as ¨Rec 1¨ and ¨Rec 2¨ , Rec Genesis among others . As he also proved to be an efficient and successful director with films as Second Name , Romasanta , OT , A Christmas Tale and Veronica .Plaza has achieved undoubted success , several awards and important reputation Rating 6.5/10 . Acceptable and passable .

Guanche487 February 2020
Luis Tosar is a great actor!!! Fantastico Luis!!I I found the film very tense and exciting, it's for sure worth watching!! Certainly the best Spanish film I have seen in a long time.

I just don't understand how this narco criminals, had so much power, weapons.... etc... really anoying!! That's why I think the film loses some power towards the end!!! , a real freezing cold end.

Wasn't Exactly What I Was Expecting, But Okay.
redrobin62-321-2073113 March 2020
I think most people would probably agree with me that, if this film was remade Hollywood style, the ending would be vastly different than this Spanish version. Generally, the acting was fine. No complaints about the cinematography, story and music, either. Pacing also wasn't that bad. What was missing? A satisfying conclusion, but your mileage may very.

Good Eye

Warning: Spoilers
A good subtitled crime film. I have a problem with this fact. The family of the nurse was threatened but he seemed unfazed and didn't take any cautionary steps to protect his wife and newborn. He just went on with his revenge plot.

Think about what goes on and decide what's the best revenge.

When we look at various deeds in the film, what is the most sophisticated one, and why?

It's interesting how that happened.

One of the better Spanish productions.
deloudelouvain28 March 2020
Quien A Hierro Mata is definitely one of the better Spanish movies I watched this year. First of all I like revenge movies, it always gives me some kind of satisfaction, but most of the time in this genre the story is filled with a lot of bloodshed, torture and/or murder. In this movie it's more of a slow burner, but it certainly worked well. There is some suspense, the story is well written and constructed, you never get a boring feeling. And that's mostly due to the excellent acting from the whole cast, especially from Luis Tosar playing Mario. In my opinion Eye For An Eye deserves a higher rating, in this genre it's just much better than most of the other revenge themed movies.

Great actors, weaker point is the script
joseandgh3 May 2020
Actors are brilliant, Tosar is excellent, but it is a quite tough film, not for the faint hearted. As the weakest points I'd mention a bit straight forward script, not too many surprises or twists. Anyway it is worth viewing, quite grippy, and moving, you won't get bored. Scenarios are excellent, Galicia is beautiful.

It had a potential but was wasted
andykowal-2316121 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It was worse than I expected. Didn't get the story at the beginning but became clear after a while. The one thing I can't understand is if he was planning that revenge for such a long time why he didn't send his wife with a baby somewhere where they would be safe before starting the last part of it? He already had experience with these criminals when they beat him up and also mentioned his pregnant wife so why he wasn't more cautious? Was he intentionally made so stupid by creators or they didn't think that through? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Glued till the end.
HerrNull23 February 2020
Spanish people can really make great films! This sick twisting drama is so well done that you would not blink for a second. The performance of all actors are extremely well done and the story left a bitter/sweet taste on your mouth.

The editing, the Music, the script and of course the Direction ... i mean ... its hard to find a film that is so complete.

If you are looking for something else to watch but you don't know what... this is your movie... but be aware... it is nothing but crude.

Excellent Spanish Revenge movie.
peterp-450-2987165 June 2020
One harsh word or lack of respect for my father, and I come here and raise hell.

Revenge movies. Nothing is more fun than watching a blood-curdling film in which a victim, who has been beaten to a pulp or almost tortured to death, resurrects and ruthlessly and cruelly takes revenge on his or her assailants. Revenge films come in different variations and gradations. The only similarity they have is that those who are the cause of all the misery generally get the short end of the stick (except in "Eden Lake"). Revenge films have been in circulation for a long time and yet form a tasteful subgenre. Who remembers "The Toxic Avenger"? A hilarious and bloody film in which a nerd, constantly being bullied by local kids, mutates into a nasty chemical creature that takes revenge in a violent way. Or the controversial film "I Spit on Your Grave"? "Revenge", "Hard Candy" and "John Wick"? The line is big and always has one outcome: mutilated perpetrator(s) and a victim who leaves the past behind with his/her head held high and determinedly faces a new, carefree future.

In "Quien a Hierro Mata" (aka "Eye For an Eye"), the protagonist Mario (Louis Tosar) cannot completely let go of the past. Images from that period haunt his mind and everything indicates that this nurse at a senior care facility can never settle for the injustice done to his family. The seemingly calm and easy-going caretaker nevertheless has a bright future ahead of him. His wife Julia (María Vázquez) is pregnant with their first child. Nothing seems to get in the way of happiness. Until one day Antonio Padin (Xan Cejudo), the notorious head of a drug cartel, has decided to exchange prison life for a stay in the retirement home where Mario is employed. Antonio Padin suffers from a terminal illness that slowly paralyzes him. And apparently, the relationship between him and his two sons Toño (Ismael Martinez) and Kike (Enric Auquer) is so sour that he opts for the retirement home rather than waiting for his end at home. By coincidence, there's a link between Mario and this deteriorating old man that causes Mario to slowly transform from a good-natured person into an avenging angel with a dark plan.

Let me immediately warn the action movie fetishists. This is not a Hollywood film in which the action scenes follow each other at a shockingly fast pace. The film is a real slow-burner, with some violent scenes here and there in the first half. Just to demonstrate that the Padin family aren't only hard-working entrepreneurs, operating a thriving crab-industry with associated culinary establishments. You'll see that the traps on their fishing boats can also be used for other purposes. And when the two brothers visit their father in the retirement home, just to report to him about their future plans with Chinese customers, they make sure everybody knows that they are untouchable and feared individuals. Kike in particular is an annoying guy with a short fuse who, even without hesitation, questions his father's mental health and treats him disrespectfully.

"Quien a Hierro Mata" is a dark and gripping thriller that excels thanks to its raw realism and the way in which various actors portray it. All credit to Louis Tosar for showing in a solid way how a tragic past (shown through a whole lot of flashbacks) determines how he judges over certain actions. The imposing beard hides every emotion. His character immediately reminded me of Joaquin Phoenix in "You were never really here". The ius talionis principle that he applies here (hence the film title) is what makes this film more unique compared to other revenge films. This vigilante ensures that the perpetrator undergoes the same treatment under the same circumstances. Let's put the make-up department in the spotlight as well. Because, the way Antonio is slowly changing looks terrifying. I was just wondering if Antonio Padin noticed what was happening to him.

I admit it. I've been pleasantly surprised by Spanish-language films several times already. After "Aterrados" and "El Hoyo" I also thought this was a successful film. Certainly not a disappointment, after I started watching it on Netflix without any prior knowledge. First of all, you think this is an average revenge movie with the same known storyline. But this soon changes due to the sudden twist and the shocking denouement. It's wonderful to see how they've managed to change the tone of this film from ordinary to moderately chaotic aggressive. The film shows how deep-seated hatred can change a person. It's not an exceptional film, but it's relentless and definitely worth watching. I was just wondering one thing. How is it that this retirement home didn't simply refuse the admission of a known and feared drug lord?

"Quien a Hierro Mata" is now available on Netflix

Elderly mob boss gets a PC male nurse who turns out to be "Mr Everything"
dale-5164919 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The story is typical revenge flick, but with an interesting twist. An aging mob boss with a degenerative neurological disease chooses to go to a nursing home instead of back home to his delinquent sons. He runs into some bad luck when he draws the attention of a hero male nurse at the facility he choose however, Hollywood style. If they made a super hero PC nurse in a comic book it would be this dude -he is a tireless caregiver , the strong but silent type who goes around belittling men who cus in front of women, doing whatever his wife tells him to do, and oh yea, she is preggers by the way and he goes to those classes too. When he seems irritated he tells his wife exactly why thus answering the age old "what r you thinking?" and comes off with many quips like "it's true what they say, pregnant women ARE beautiful", so he is the illusive 'perfect man".......Hes a sort of a "woke PC police " character, like a 1977 Charles Bronson with 2020 sensibilities. So he tells his wife everything... or does he?????... she does discover he is keeping the drugloard stuff from her, and immediatly bleeds, as to show "SEE, YOU PUT YOUR FAMILY AT RISK WHEN YOU DONT TELL ME EVERYTHING".... the new message:men, " you had better tell us everything inside those neanderthal heads of yours: OR ELSE !!!!" He is a man on a mission, and it's payback from this drugloard who has hurt so many lives. No matter that Mr Nursie is breaking so many laws, medical and legal, as he injects illicit drugs into the veins of his sordid patient. He is judge, jury, executioner and PC police all rolled into one. Major cred problems, I didn't know the Spanish were so suggestible.

Not bad but
MovieIQTest24 January 2020
How could this guy put his drug pouch in the closet of the convalescent assisted living care center without any worry to expose his vendetta wrong doing? It's so obvious and so easy to be located, but he still kept it on the top shelf of the closet like a routine daily job.

A nurse could afford such a home like that in a decent suburban area?

How come he and the son of the druglord would have so conveniently encountered each other on a deserted road without any traffic around. What made these two persons on the same route so late at night?

The Spanish drug organization seemed to be too small to cope with any situation, not just so helpless in the prison.

These are the things that I've found not quite logic during my watch.

The other thing that I found very difficult was the speedy talking by the Spanish people, it's just too fast to follow even with English subtitles. The Spanish people talk so differently from those in Latino America, they all speak like shooting a machine gun, the words coming out of their mouths are like 50 calibre bullets, so fast and so fluent, not like what I used to hear from a Mexican. It's totally different, not just the tone, intonation, accent, pronunciation, people in Latino America speaking Spanish language just so different from the Spanish people. I often found difficulties to follow the dialog in Spanish movies, not like when there's Mexican delivering his or her dialog in American movies with the help of English subtitles. But I prefer the Spanish people speaking their pure Spanish language than the Mexican speaking the Spanish, I just don't know why.

Simple plot
jordymadueno6 July 2020
The plot is straight simple. It's not bad. The main problem is pace and monotony. It's like without intent they announced what will happen in each scene. Although, the end was a nice touch. I hope the Spanish productions keep getting better at new levels of complexity within the stories or maybe it was a great story but the director didn't make the best decisions for that story.

To revenge or not to revenge
kosmasp15 February 2020
There's a twist towards the end of the movie, that might not surprise you (It didn't surprise me), but that doesn't mean that the ending will leave you untouched. But let's move back to the beginning. The beginning of the movie, because there is quite a lot of backstory and we'll explore some of it during the movie. We'll explore it with our main character.

We as viewers may not agree with his actions, but you will be able to understand why he does what he does ... again you don't have to condone it. A really tough and wicked little thriller with quite a punch ...

Warning: Spoilers
His late brother, Sergio was a junkie who took drug from Padin for his own pleasure and ended up overdosed. To make Sergio feel better, Padin gave Mario heroin to be injected into Sergio. Then Sergio died.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that is my understanding.

In this case, Padin is not the wrong one. He was just gave what he supposed to give to make Sergio less in pain. But the one who injected the substance into Sergio was Mario himself.

Seem to me, Mario seeking revenge because of his own mistakes.

Moreover, Sergio and Padin was in a very good term.

Mario is a selfish person and in denial.

Terrific Spanish yran
searchanddestroy-112 January 2021
Bloody, gloomy, gritty, inventive, and so unpredictable, I fell in love with this thriller from Spain at first sight, a thriller that scared me with the main lead's wife, pregnant spouse, whose presence may announce the worst, as in a Liam Neeson's garbage crap, with clichés galore and an ending which you can smell one hundred miles in advance. But here, no, no, no, no clichés, nothing foreseeable and a so unusual topic, using the revenge scheme, and the drug cartels. Directing, acting and an over the top editing make this film an authentic gem, a masterpiece, but of course there will be batches of sissies who won't like the end. I suggest they get back to Liam Neeson, the poor man's Kevin Costner, whom I can not bear at all. Too smooth actor for too smooth movies.
