Valjean can be so irritatingly noble and places himself in unnecessary danger. Surely he knew that he might be walking into a trap when he goes to see Thenardier again. Also what was the deal with the red hot poker?
The episode does suffer from too many coincidences. However we are also entering a backdrop of another revolution in the air in Paris. It is a tinderbox that is set to ignite, no red hot poker is needed for that.
