Intriguing series continues
hmurdock-547422 February 2018
This episode is very good, as it continues the story as portrayed in the first episode. The actor that portrays BATF agent Rodriguez bears a strong resemblance to the real person. The other actor portraying BATF agent Agguiler I believe does a very good job to.

This episode certainly could leave viewers ready to see the next one, of the BATF raid.

The flaws of this episode are errors of omission, such as:

Much of the story of the BATF investigation is omitted. The BATF is present at gun shows, and would have known that the firearms parts, accessories, and other merchandise sold by the Branch Davidian at gun shows was completely legal. It would have been interesting to have a scene at a gun show, showing a Branch Davidian table.

It omits the fact the way the BATF obtained its search warrant. The affidavit for the warrant describes, for example separate upper and lower receivers for AK rifles, which don't exist. The affidavit also cites claims by former Davidian Marc Bareult as a witness to what he had seen, although he was legally blind.

It omits the fact that the BATF relied on information provided by "cult buster" groups such as the Cult Awareness Network for information. The "deprograming movement" of a few decades ago has been discredited.

It omits that entire story of the Waco Press Tribunes article, "The Failed Messiah," and the investigation of that.

Despite the omissions, this episode is very good. To cover the points I have brought up it would take at least one, if not two episodes, and this who produced this min-series probably had to deal with things such as "time-inits," and a "budget."

Great Episode.

The acting, the script, the dialogue, and build up are very amazing in this episode. It gets the point across to the viewers of the personal feelings each character is going through while successfully moving the show's plot forward. Most importantly, it keeps audience hooked into the series.

The Strangers Across the Street
Prismark1011 September 2019
ATF Agent Robert Rodriguez (John Leguizamo) is one of the agents placed at a nearby house to keep watch of David Koresh.

Rodriguez pretends to be a rancher when Koresh comes knocking and he invites Rodriguez to visit his church. Koresh knows he is a government agent of some kind and it is an opportunity for Rodriguez to snoop around the compound.

The more Rodriguez talks to Koresh, the more conflicted he becomes. Rodriguez sees the group as less of a threat.

However this series is showing in both Koresh and Special Agent Gary Noesner, how belief in institutions can easily be rocked.

Noesner is seeing the FBI becoming a militarized force. Negotiations are seen a way to lure people out in the open so they can be shot dead. Complaining about erratic colleagues is taboo.

Koresh needs to cover up his wrongdoing. He had a sex with a minor and fathered a child with her. Koresh has arranged for Michelle to be married off to newcomer Thibodeau in a sham wedding.

However Michelle tells one of Koresh's other wives she never had a choice as to who she slept with and whom she married. As a minor she was paired off to Koresh and no one raised an objection that she legally could not make an informed choice.

This episode wants to present a human face of David Koresh. He wants to turn Agent Rodriguez, he chides a child in a humorous way for eating ice cream on the sly. He even brushes aside child sex abuse with the inner circle of the Branch Davidians figuring a way out for him.

Even though he has a smaller role, I still think Michael Shannon is the stand out in the second episode. Leguizamo showed more nuance as someone who was out to get Koresh at all costs but is now unsure. However I find that Waco lacks grittiness. There is something unrealistic about this episode, at times I thought I was watching a Lifetime movie.
