Beneath the Ink is about someone using his skills to make the world a better place; in particular he is a tattoo artist offering free covering for racist symbols etc. The subject talks about his goals and we see various people who are getting cover up work done. As an act, the film is heart warming and convinces in the way that small actions do help. It tells us about this well. What it doesn't do as well is engage the viewer in the heart of the matter. I didn't think it explored the topic as well as it could have done - it makes reference to things but moves past them, and generally it doesn't allow the subjects to talk - and they are the ones who really could have made an impact by virtue of showing the impact on them.
This lack of connection limits the film, and while the act is important and mostly makes the film worth seeing, it does feel like there was more here that could have been done.
