Review and plot summary (major Spoilers!!)
lizzybruck11 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The very beginning got me excited that this was going to be as creepy and scary as I anticipated from watching the trailer...I was So very wrong.

There were Way too many sub-plots in this movie that I couldn't figure out which one I cared about least...but definitely gave me ideas on who I wanted to be killed first.

The acting was just terrible, from the attempted pot smoking from actors who'd obviously never touched a bowl in their entire lives, overly dramatic arguments that made me think everyone involved needed to be diagnosed bi-polar and put on medication immediately, to the unrealistic death scenes where the "last twitches" seemed to never end. The characters were unlikeable other than perhaps the two brothers and the cinematography was confusing at best, as they tended to favour long, uncomfortable pauses on insignificant objects for no apparent logical reason.

So, let's get started on the plot(s). Loads of Spoilers!!!

The initial scene is of a women washing up some dishes when she hears a loud bang in her house. She goes to the living room, where I spent too much time wondering why there were two fireplaces, decided nothing is amiss and goes back to the sink. After another louder bang she goes to investigate and apparently gets over killed...I say apparently because we don't actually get to see anything, only get to hear some "killing noises" that we assume she is dead, and I will point out that this lady is of Absolutely No importance to the movie...I wish I knew that before I spent Way too much of the first quarter of the movie trying to tie her into the plot somehow.

There are three couples spending the night at a house belonging to one of the guys parents, apparently to have some fun before they graduate college and go their separate ways. The guy has a brother who is also staying there and just got out of prison two weeks before. There is obvious animosity between the brothers because the one never went to visit the other in jail. We find out later that it's because the one brother went to jail to protect the other brother...what I Really want to know is, how could Anyone get sentenced to three years in prison for Attempting to steal a car?? I've seen murderers serve less time!!

Ok, back to the story(s)...they all have dinner, get high, drink some wine, and during this time we find out that one girl thinks she's pregnant and doesn't know who the baby daddy is, the potential father is having a screaming match on his phone with his coach about getting him scouted to some sports team (I think), nobody trusts the ex-con brother and apparently not even One of the seven people in this house carries their cell phone On them, or all seven of them had to simultaneously charge their phones in different rooms...I'm still not sure but I'm calling BS.

Apparently during all of this nonsense, someone sneaks in this huge house, that is of course in the middle of no where, takes all their cell phones without them hearing and kidnaps one of the annoying girls who is for no reason crying in the upstairs bathroom. Another guy, who I don't care about, goes outside to look for his gfs phone, notices the cars are all messed up and gets killed on the way back. So now there are five people left...big "knock" on the door and GF of guy I don't care about, goes to check on her man, finds him dead on the porch, goes to cry soundlessly over his dead body and gets whacked by a baseball bat to the head a couple times. I gotta admit, at this point I had high hopes of this movie Finally picking up some speed!... I was mistaken again.

The remaining four people got to see the girl get whacked and after a battle to get the door shut the antagonist finally shows his face and he is a creepy clown with a big pot belly. He wants them to let him in, they thought this wasn't a good idea and the clown somehow shuts off the lights in this whole house. Lucky that the ex-con has some brains and grabs a knife and lights the way with his zippo.

Apparently the absentee parents took the guns away from the house two weeks earlier in preparation for their jailbird son to come home because they didn't want guns around a guy who once attempted to steal a car, because...reasons.

Lights turn back on to show younger brothers gf, the girl they kidnapped earlier from the bathroom, to be tied up out back with now two crazy clowns being asked to be let in or she gets killed. Now this is where things get really ridiculous. The clown is shown putting a pool ball up to the gfs mouth...I'm thinking he's gonna probably use it to smash her teeth in or something along those lines, but no...we hear some crunching noises (because we don't get to see pretty much anything in this film), and then all of a sudden the pool ball is bulging out of the girls neck! They made this girl look like a pelican when it has a fish stuck in its throat. The probability of him accomplishing this task without the use of surgical instruments is slim to none. This death scene is the funniest thing I've seen in a while. Her attempts at looking like she was choking were hilarious and her last death twitches seemed to go on forever! I didn't think this girl was Ever gonna die!

Next up, just like in Scooby-doo, the gang splits up, seemingly because the plot needed to move along, and the jock and ex-con decide to check upstairs. They go into a room, equipped with the cons knife and trusty zippo and another clown comes out of no where and kills the jock. The two people left downstairs, the little brother and the girl who may or may not be pregnant, run upstairs and find the ex-con still alive, the jock dead and mysteriously the clown has vanished? I really haven't a clue what happened because the zippo went out.

Side note: I'm pretty sure the brothers Just moved into this house because they don't have a clue where anything is, including the fuse box. And where exactly Is the fuse box?? The clowns are turning the lights on and off with ease. It's either outside where no fuse box is ever located or the inside, vanishing clown guy is flicking the switches, and if that's the case, why doesn't That guy just let the other clowns in?! So many questions....

The three remaining characters decide to make a run for it out the back door. (First semi-smart move they have made in this entire movie) Ex-con gets taken down by a clown in a dress but tells the others to keep running. While Ex-con grapples with that guy, baby bro gets sucker punched with a bat by the original pot bellied clown who then starts choking him out. Pregnant/not pregnant girl starts running down the road only to come across six more clowns holding various weapons who proceed to surround her and kill her...we again don't get to see the kill but they did add in a shot of her mangled body and a couple of those twitches the director thinks is crucial to a good death scene. Ex-con stabs dress clown in the throat and then uses OG clowns bat against him, kills him and gets him off his baby bro. The brothers rush into the garage where the four wheeler the Con was working on earlier (and that was running perfectly fine earlier) was kept, but of course it won't start.

The boys arm themselves ready for battle because they somehow know there are lots of other clowns out there and that's it. Literally... that's it. The end is the worst part of this film because it doesn't exist.

Some other points: what are eight psychopathic clowns doing in the middle of the woods and how did they get there?!? Did they stop to apply the clown make-up right before heading out or do they always run around looking like that? Did they scope out this place beforehand to know the inhabitants weren't armed? That there was no alarm system? That there was no landline? Did they do any Real reconnaissance on the house other than hiding in the bushes that day and breathing really hard?

It seems a pretty far way to walk when there are so many potential variables that could screw up their massacre.

What happened to the clown upstairs??

If they wanted inside So badly, why didn't they just Remain inside while they were taking everyone's cell phones or kidnapping the gf??

What was the significance of the pregnant/not pregnant girl? Who would bring two pregnancy tests to a house party? Why was it important that she didn't know who the father was when there was never a confrontation between her and her bf about the subject?

What happened in the end?!?!

This film had potential, but it missed the mark on so many levels.

Mixed bag with good production

Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't sure what to expect from this film other than someone would come knocking. it takes a while to get to know the characters and many of them are not all that likeable to be honest with you. Other than they all went to school together and some were couples it doesn't feel like the connections were developed well enough. It takes a while to get through the story so moves a little slowly until the antagnoiss finally show up. The antagonists are actually more interesting then the main characters. There are some problems to me with the decision-making. The bond between the brothers as the movie goes on is the best part of the movie to me. The acting is not terrible but better in some spots then others. Production is good for a low budget movie. There's plenty of gore in this one and the confrontations were definitely staged well. The biggest problems for me is that we don't really know why the bad guys show up and just as you get to a climax in the movie it ends way too soon.

Underwhelming and unimpressive genre effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder16 November 2020
Heading out to a remote cabin-in-the-woods, a group of friends decide to hold a special retreat as their last chance to be together for a while but when they realize that a band of masked intruders has crashed their trip intent on killing them one-by-one and must try to get away from the maniacs alive.

This one was overall nothing special. This is pretty much only fun for the actual games played during the invasion where they go about trying to play some disturbing and demented games to get inside. The stress built up from before, the chaos of finding themselves stuck against the invaders who have the upper hand against them and the ability to constantly get them to do things that play into their hands by grabbing the group individually to play games with them makes for a somewhat thrilling time here. Given that this has some action and intensity with the confrontations as well as providing some gore, this is about all that works for this one. This one does bring about some distressing issues. One of its main problems is the fact that absolutely nothing happens for a large part of the film as we get to know everyone involved. The whole group arriving and hanging out together serves this one well to get a little introduction going, but hardly any of them are memorable or even interesting with one couple trying to keep a pregnancy a secret, another is trying to make plans to spend more time together after school and the useless secrets that are brought up to try to put stress and strain on each other just doesn't provide this with anything worthwhile. As none of them are interesting and this sort of behavior makes it hard to believe they'd all want to be friends anyway, it takes a toll on the film as a whole. Likewise, that causes the other problem here in that the pacing to this one is so staggered and off-set that it's quite land and dull for the most part. Rather than be around anyone interesting, this setup provides such an overlong introduction before anything happens that it's quite easy to forget the actual home invasion part of the storyline. For such a short-running film as it already is to begin with, featuring these numerous uninteresting plotlines as much as it does since this goes way past the halfway point before they even attempt to enter the house even with those cleverly-missed news pieces which just makes the film a slough through the first half. That hardly any of it is interesting Lastly, even though the finale has the best aspects here it's still undermined by several rather large problems. The main issue here is the fact that so much of this one is so dark that it's nearly impossible to make out what's going on. With all the electricity drained and being forced to wander around in the dark trying to keep themselves wandering around in the darkness which means that it's nearly impossible to tell what's happening as that just keeps this quite difficult to make out. This is all coupled with the utterly moronic decision-making they display which keeps this moving along for the sake of the story which is always problematic with very little smart decision-making throughout here, and with an infuriating finale that doesn't offer any resolution at all there's a lot wrong with the film.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

Slow
photoshawna23 January 2021
This movie had such a slow start and by slow I mean at a snails pace with bad acting. It did get a little more interesting after the first kill but relatively was a boring movie with a little gore.

Absolutely Dreadful
JICNZ17 July 2021
This was dire. The 'knocking' party only arrive about 3/4 of the way through the movie. Up till then we have the most stilted dialogue and woeful acting I've seen in a movie for a long time. Then clowns show up, cut the power and the rest of the film was totally dark. Some good sound effects: ah, splurge, blat, squish. And that was that. I have no idea who lived or who died, but more to the point I have no interest in finding out either.

Do not waste your time. I wasted mine for you.

Do not waste your time.

So genuinely bad
jj-7440923 January 2021
There are zero redeeming qualities about this low-budget film. Long weird shots of nothing, terrible acting and character building, no ending at all. I have never written a review for anything in my life, but I felt the need to save some people an hour and 20 minutes of their time. Do not watch this movie.

By no means a slam dunk but very far from trash
RubbleFilms194 February 2021
There are some questionable performances on top of most of the characters being unlikeable except for the brothers. The pacing is slow but it worked for me. The last half of the movie is entertaining and the movie overall is relatively gripping. The ending is surprisingly bleak and ballsy. To close, I don't think the movie is anywhere close to being trash. I expected and I have seen much worse than this.

If someone had a rifle, they'd all be fine
DebraIonaVogel9 January 2021
Remote cabin, no shotgun? If they'd had a way to defend themselves, this premise would be over in three minutes.

Geez.

Weak story, sketchy editing, horrible music. Terrible, terrible acting and torture porn.

It was pretty scary and had some memorable kills in it. Nothing really groundbreaking but very watchable. I enjoyed it overall. If you like The Strangers, you will probably like this.

A Bleak and Hopeless Ride; pretty decent
thekorystuhler31 January 2021
The movie has a bunch of flaws. They bring up Derrick's ex-con history/criminal background so much it's obnoxious. They act like they're sitting with a terrorist over a young kid "stealing a car".

The lights going out halfway through made some of the film hard to track narratively but it still works.

The acting is pretty goofy and the characters are one dimensional.

That said; it's entertaining. It's not boring and it's fairly gripping. The deaths accompanied by some decent ADR sound effects are pretty brutal. It does not pan out the way you think it will and then last act brings this completely hopeless and bleak tone to the film and I actually like the way it ends. Watch it. It's worth the watch.

Decent moments but NO PAYOFF
cramniceanu17 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's a decent movie. Actors were kind of bad at moments especially the main characters. The bad guys brought a bit of fun moments, however the ending literally had no pay off. We spent the entire time watching the movie with some expectation even of the main characters died off, but in the end there was nothing.

Rated 2 due to the bad guys and the renagade brother

Also. I THOUGHT HE FIXED THE ATV!!!???

Welll...
LSteves652 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This could have been phenomenal if the acting had been better. Premise is typical- friends on a getaway in a remote cabin and bad things happen while drama gets stirred up within the group. Script is decent, cinematography is good until it goes dark halfway through and you can't see anything, sound design is good too. Actor that plays Derrick is in a different league than the rest. He made the movie for me. Actor that played Tariq isn't too bad either. I thought the clown guy was pretty funny. Played the part well. I mean I won't watch it again. But I was able to watch the whole thing without getting bored or hating it. Better acting would have saved it.

Disturbing. Decent. Could have been great
mjanssens261 January 2021
This movie starts off pretty slow but once it gets going it's truly disturbing. Frightening in many parts and the production values are good. The acting was hit and miss but that's to be expected in these types of movies. The only thing that hurts this film is the abrupt ending which... well, I won't give anything away and will let you judge for yourself. Overall, decent but needed another ten minutes in the finale to really finish the film on a better note.

Not even good enough for a Razzie
mycull-231-1229086 April 2022
This was the worst movie ever made. The lamest last weekend get-together ever had. Whoever wrote this obviously never had any friends, never had a party and never had any fun. 10 minutes after arriving at their destination I couldn't wait for someone to show up and start killing them.

Really stuck with me
JaniceWoorley1 January 2021
I turned this on thinking it was going to be a mindless horror movie but there are some scenes in this movie that REALLY stuck with me. It's clearly a low budget production and these movies are usually so bad I turn them off within five minutes but this one was much better than any of the other ones I've seen on Tubi. I highly recommend it.

Pretty bad
bsalco22 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Being a huge fan of the horror genre, I don't mind watching b-horror movies, and I have found many of them to e quite enjoyable.

I saw the cover of The Night They Knocked, watched the trailers, read some decent reviews and decided to give it a watch.

Ugh. I wanted to like this one, but unfortunately there are so many things I disliked about this movie.

First, the acting is really bad. The characters are flat and for the most part, unlikable. It's tough to root for characters when you don't care about them.

Clowns can definitely be creepy but because there is no backstory as to who these people are or why they are terrorizing home owners in the mountain, I found the killers to be somewhat cheesy.

The pacing in this movie is a bit slow and overall, much of the movie bored me. And just when it started to pick up, the movie was over.

And that brings me to the end of the movie. What the heck was that? The ending here definitely could go as one of the worst endings ever. It was like the writer/director ran out of time and/or money and just stopped filming. So disappointing.

There is some decent gore and a couple scares which I appreciated. There is one death scene that was quite original and not easy to watch. So I will give this movie props for that. Other than that, I can't recommend this movie at all.
