Funny but uneven.

Funny one liners but the show is frenetic and needs to settle in. With a first episode a lot was being introduced so hopefully it smoothes out or it ultimately won't be a good show.

Come on folks - it's a silly space show

Are you really looking for great writing, Emmy acting, etc. This is a fun look at greed, hoopla, stupidity. This is A good ensemble and you should sit back, laugh and enjoy a half hour away from the craziness of today's world into the craziness of a future world😃

Much better than a lot of people are saying.

Is it that tough to enjoy a show, nowadays? People seem to be disliking shows more and more, their standards rising higher, for no apparent reason, and needlessly nitpicking at everything. This was completely fine. It was very entertaining and had more than enough funny moments. I'm relieved that I'm not that way. I feel sorry for those who are.

Big fan of Armando Ianucci, so it comes at no surprise that this is pretty awesome, great first episode, lovely powdery dry humour. Look forward to the next.

Cul De Sac

I'm loath, with a comedy, to write it all off after one episode. I have done previously, but it has to be really awful. This first episode isn't that but I'm not sure I'd say I enjoyed it, and there were certainly a lot of elements that I didn't enjoy.

Avenue 5 is a pleasure cruiser that circumnavigates the solar system using gravitational fields to plot its course. Unfortunately, an accident with the gravity pushes the ship 2.5 degrees off course and extends what should be an 8 week cruise into a 3 year odyssey. It soon becomes apparent that the ship's captain Ryan Clark (Hugh Laurie) is a barely competent figurehead but that the capable lead engineer was killed in the accident.

First episodes of comedies are on a bit of a hiding to nothing, I think. Aside from the act of trying to be funny, they have to introduce the premise of the show and all the characters that you're going to live with, so I'm prepared to accept that this particular episode didn't amuse me very much. What's somewhat harder to take is that I'm not sure where the laughs are going to come from. I actively don't like an awful lot of these characters already (and not in a Jean Ralphio 'supposed to' type way). Josh Gad's uber-rich ship owner, the divorcing couple, even Rebecca Front's bossy housewife all rubbed me the wrong way (and I love Rebecca Front). I feel like I've seen "the Joke" of the characters already and I didn't like it. There are other aspects though, Lenora Crichlow's engineer seems fine and there's something in Captain Clark that liked too. Zack Woods I thought I was enjoying, as he played against type as a confident Passenger Liaison, but then in later seems he seemed to have a personality transplant into a blubbering idiot in the later scenes.

I'm not prepared to give up yet, but it'll have to get a lot better pretty quickly for me to see it out.

Great cast with great writing. Never feels like it's trying too hard. A really promising start.

Bad. Really bad.

Not going to go too in depth but this show was really bad. The writing was absolutely horrible. Lots of talent in the cast but the writing will sink this ship.

Excited to see where the show goes, the writing is funny enough to keep you laughing but also intriguing enough to want the next episode

I like it.

I like this show even i was never a fan of Doctor House ,the uniform of the captain is far superior to all the uniforms from Discovery or The Orville,it has a great Mass Effect influence and i even like Ethan Phillips ,even if i always hated Neelix (not the actor) when i was young,i think the bad reviews exist because all the cast is very ugly and some of them are way too fat and the youngest audience is too tired of that tendency, just look what is happening with the new Ghostbusters movie ,Discovery or with the newest Terminator movie.

Not good
Piedradura20 January 2020
I found everything about this show very derivative and unfunny, particularly Josh Gad's character. The writing is terrible and I expect more from Hugh Laurie. The divorcing couple's dialogue was extremely hackneyed. I'll give it one more try, but I don't really see much potential here. HBO can and needs to do better than this.

Ouch!

Really? From House and Blackadder to this?

For me, comedy is about funny, not stupid. This seems stupid. Very stupid.

One or two kind of funny jokes manage to escape but not enough to make the rest of the cringe fest worth watching. I really felt like this was aimed at 10-12 year olds.

Maybe it will get better next season, but I doubt it. I saw no improvement from episode 1 to the finale.

I Was Flying

I think this was funnier when it was called Galaxy Quest or even The Orville.

Hugh Laurie returns to comedy as Captain Ryan Clark, taking the spaceship Avenue 5 on an eight week cruise around Saturn but an unfortunate accident leaves the engineer dead and the ship off course.

The crew of the ship reveal their incompetence as they try to deal with the disaster and the frazzled passengers.

Writer Armando Iannucci has tried to do a sitcom style comedy but filmed it in a mockumentary style. It looks expensive, but it is not The Thick of It nor is it Red Dwarf.

The first episode made me smile a few times. It has far too many annoying characters particularly the owner with plenty of ideas, Herman Judd (Josh Gad.)

Not Funny at all.
msbattleacc2 February 2020
Did someone forget to tell the writers that this supposed to be a comedy? Jokes are terrible which is a shame cause the rest of the show is ok. Except the "funny" part was the most important since it supposed to be a comedy .

I really tried to like this show. After watching the first three episodes, I can't say that I do. Not one of the characters is likeable, the comedy falls entirely flat, and the show is generally boring. There's not a chance that this show will continue past its first season. It's just plain awful.
