My advice is to anyone wanting to watch this is if you don't like films where there is very little dialogue and things that remain unexplained and left to the imagination then maybe skip this one. However the concept and execution of what this is trying to be was well done. Not sure why one of the other reviewers had to have a pop at the director / dad of the star of this as it doesn't really describe the film to the rest of us in any way. But If you like "film" and have patience and enjoy a little bit of horror and suspense thrown in there, you'll enjoy it.

Not your mainstream film
Saiph9031 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Really enjoyed, my understanding is Aelous was the god of winds which resulted in sailors becoming lost. The story is simple, a fisherman while out on a small boat from Valletta, Malta, comes across a strange mist, in the mist is an abandoned boat, he ties his boat to it to explore but when he returns his boat is missing. My interpretation is the boat challenges the man, he survives the challenges and stops the boat from sinking and the boat returns him to shore. It is a one actor film and a bit slow but I found it gripping.

Why the low ratings?
p-demir1 January 2021
I didn't expect much and it turned out to be quite alright. Makes you want to keep watching and maybe this is the effect of the current lockdown in 2021 but felt like it was intense and mysterious till the end. Always liked a sea film and this doesn't disappoint despite a one man, one place scenario.

Just caught this on prime.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. A gripping thriller with a supernatural edge. It takes some doing to carry a full length movie by yourself and Joe Azzopardi makes a cracking job of it. I am guessing his brother is the co-writer and director and what a talented pair they are. I have see million dollar hollywood blockbusters not pull off the tension and atmosphere of menace that there is here. I love how the boat has a personality, it's playing with the sailor, testing him even. The scene with the dolphins is superb. All round it was a great 90 minutes of fun, give this a watch.

Kept me watching...
Jamie_Seaton4 September 2019
Quite a piece of filmmaking by the director and solo actor. I found the story very interesting as a whole. Although it may only have 1 page of dialogue through out the whole film, I think the director is trying to put the viewer through the same loneliness and despair as the character. If the protagonist had narrated or spoke more it might disturb the sombre direction of the film.

The plot is very light. It's basically about a guy trapped on a boat... Not much else to say, besides the subtle instances where he might not be alone... I'll leave it at that.

Overall this isn't a great film or a film I'll give a 2nd viewing but it was intriguing and kept me glued till the very end. The film longs for some better editing though. Anyone who says it's terrible really doesn't understand the message or slow burn journey the filmmakers are taking them on.

Overall it's worth the watch if you're into something a little less mainstream.

Journey to hell.
abydos851115 January 2022
Slow paced, but couldn't take my eyes off his struggles. Claustrophobic. The gaze up through the water, heart beat... Is he drowning? Is the boat ferrying him to hell or being resuscitated back to life, punishing him?

No good comes to one man in a boat
minxxy-3684915 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I guess you could surmise that this boat is possessed... or you could see it as a boat with some sticky doors and a great self driving sat nav.

If you like dialogue in a film, this definitely isn't for you.

Guy spends an extraordinary amount of time locked in a toilet that magically has a window that is close to everything he needs to get hold of.

Despite his night locked in the toilet... he doesn't learn and decides to close more doors which just get him stuck in other places.

Circular story line with no real meaning, except don't take boats that aren't yours (at least there is a moral high ground).

Probably would have worked wonderfully as an episode of a series rather than the elongated bilge I sat through.

Not sure if the other reviewers actually watched the same film I did...

Warning: Spoilers
Joe Azzopardi takes a small boat off of Malta and discovers a bump, dense fog, and an abandon sailing ship, the Aelous Valetta. Joe boards the vessel and soon discovers he is alone on the ship and his ride has left. On a historic note, in 1886 the Aelous was sunk when it collided with the Valetta. Things happen on the ship that tests Joe and threatens his life. He manages to avoid the large Sealand cargo vessel that killed Robert Redford and not soon enough. Sorry for that plot "spoiler".

The film is slow-moving. And it doesn't give real closure. It does show a small cavern on an island if you know anything about Aelous, you might connect the two.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity. Note to self: If locked in a room and the hinges face you try to knock out the pin

An elongated 20 minute short film
OnjiMooteDaMarle17 September 2019
What you see in the trailer is what you get. All that is needed is a good climax. But a 90 minute feature length film is a tad too much. This could have been easily done within 20 minutes. OK, even 20 minutes is too much, 10 minutes would have been a suspenseful drama. I fast forwarded a lot of scenes. When I say a lot, I mean a lot. The climax is an ode to 'All's well that ends well'. But sitting through 90 minutes is a torture. The trailer was good though.

Completely changed my view of boats
ronniedarko-0231112 March 2022
I decided to watch this film on a whim to learn a little bit more about boats. I was planning on sailing with my wife for our honeymoon this summer and wanted to see how boating is. Well not anymore! After watching this terrifying film about a man and this evil boat I don't think I will step foot on a boat ever again. My wife has now left me once she learned I canceled our sailing honeymoon. I just can't do it now. The thought of being on a boat in the middle of the ocean and having these horrible evil things happen is too much for me to bare. This is a great film but please avoid if you are planning any honeymoon sailing trips in the future.

If you want a bunch of special effects, this is not the movie for you. If you want to be spoon fed a neat little story, this is not the movie for you.

If, on the other hand, you want a thriller or a movie that makes you think even after it's over, check this out.

A movie with one character can be difficult to pull off but this one is done so well. The acting was believable and you really felt his fear and frustration. There are some very tense and claustrophobic moments and they were filmed perfectly.

The makeup was also extremely well done and consistent. This is a miss on many movies in my opinion. Bad makeup "injuries" can really pull me out of the story but that was not an issue with this movie.

Put your stupid phone down and let yourself get lost in the tension of a great film.

Almost a great movie
diggz-679286 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The film IS engrossing and well acted but at the end was a little confusing.I think that is why it is getting a lot of low scores.

The boat in the title is named after Aelous , who in greek mythology was the keeper of the winds and king of the island of Aeolia, one of the islands close to Sicily.Aeolia was visited by Odysseus and his crew of the Odyssey. Aeolus gave them hospitality for a month and provided them a west wind to carry them home to Ithaca. He also provided a gift of an ox-hide bag containing all winds but the west. Odysseus and his crew members traveled steadily and anxiously for several days, but with his native land in sight, Odysseus was overpowered by sleep. His men proceeded to indulge their curiosity to see the costly presents which they thought the bag contained, opened it and out burst the imprisoned winds with such a roar that the force drove the ship back to Aeolus' island. Aeolus refused to provide any further help because he believed that their short and unsuccessful voyage meant that the gods did not favour them. So is this a modern retelling of the story.. The boat itself seems to be haunted or controlled by something ethereal , and it seems to be intent on killing the lone sailor (very much like the movie "The Duel") right up to the end when suddenly it decides to just drop him off on his island home. If the film had a different ending that made sense I would have given it an 8 or 9.

The story that sank in the sea
The_Swedish_Reviewer26 June 2021
I normally love odd indie thrillers but micro budget mystery thriller about a "possessed" boat leads absolutely nowhere. The movie adds nothing to the ghost ship genre, except sleep aid. If you are looking for a solid boat mystery, watch "Triangle". This was a complete waste of time.

Warning: Spoilers
A rather intense movie even though there is only one character n one place setting. The acting was good n you felt his anguish n pain throughout the movie.

I didn't quite get the ending, maybe it was a dream? I don't know, maybe the boat sailed him back to the beginning? I don't know but it was good.

I can recommend this movie for its atmosphere n spooky story telling.

Overall a different decent production.

Good movie - some things dont match.
kontakt-388318 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As a sailor, there is just too much, that doesn't make sense. Why aren't there a liferaft, in a boat this size?

Walls are so thin, on a boat - you seriously can't get stuck in there.

Why didn't the big ship, checked up on the small ship? In the real world, they (hopefully) would.

What is the idea with the ending? Is the other people also arrived like him, or is he rescued?!

But actually, i liked the movie. Exciting.

There has to be a reason why this film cost $5M to make and grossed less than USD 100K
stanleybrains4 December 2020
There has to be a reason why this film cost $5M to make and grossed less than USD 100K and actually, thats a lot... I actually can't think of what USD 5M would have been spent on. Hiring a boat for a couple of weeks, $10,000, one actor, whats he get paid for that, although the producer gave it to his son (Keanu was busy apparently) then there was 20 to 30 cans of food which i noticed in the film, they would have had to go to the supermarket to get them, hotels for the camera and sound guy, oh, and the expensive bit, to hire someone to walk up and down the deck upstairs, although that could have been the sound guy. Is asking me below, does this contain spoilers...Well, actually what ever I say here cannot spoil it more.

somewhere between a thriller and a horror movie
myriamlenys27 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
An unsuspecting fisherman discovers a yacht and climbs aboard. The yacht seems empty and abandoned, but is this really the case ? As mishap follows mishap and accident follows accident, the fisherman needs to fight - against the sea, against the vessel, perhaps even against a hidden enemy playing a game of cat-and-mouse...

"The Boat" is a tense and suspenseful movie situated somewhere between thriller and horror movie. It juxtaposes the vast expanse of the wide-open sea to the tiny, cramped quarters of a ship, and makes excellent use of the scare potential of both elements. (I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but there are a few scenes certain to drive viewers suffering from claustrophobia to the edge of madness.) Thematically we're not too far removed from the classic "Duel", in which an unsuspecting citizen finds himself pursued by a malignant driver who seems to be the human servant to a giant and ominous truck.

"The Boat" is notable for having a capable, professional protagonist who does not panic easily and actually knows his way around a ship. It's a refreshing change to the many badly-conceived movies in which sailors can't sail, soldiers can't fight or architects can't build.

The ending, perhaps, wasn't all I had been hoping for, but still : a creditable achievement.

Fine musical score.

This didn't float my boat!
Whilst well filmed, the film was far too long, boring, hard to categorise as not horror and hardly a thriller. It only kept me watching as I kept hoping it would pick up, but it didn't!

Not as Bad as Everyone Says But Major Problems
gbrietigam6 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There's not much plot to this film. A man (the only character) discovers an abandoned cabin cruiser. He boards the ship, gets locked in the bathroom, and the ship (which is either on autopilot or possessed by ghosts) takes him out to sea. The next hour and a half surprisingly gets filled nicely as he has several close brushes with death trying to find his way back to land.

A few major problems I have with this film (#spoilers ahead): First, you mean to tell me he couldn't break through the bathroom door? Sorry, I wasn't buying it. A grown man should easily have been able to get that door open in less than a minute. We were talking life or death stakes, and he didn't even attempt to pry/jimmy the latch? He didn't try stomping down on the handle to break it off? He didn't try attacking the hinges? You get the picture.

Second, sure the compass was broke, but you mean to tell me this sailor couldn't figure out which way land was by looking at the sun? I'm in no way a seaman, but if I were off the coast, I'd use the ol' "sun rises in the east and sets in the West" saying to at least point the ship in the right direction. He couldn't have been that far off the coast.

Third, a cargo ship collides with an abandoned ghost boat and nobody calls that in?

Fourth, how the heck does he only discover that room with the knife and other supplies at the very end? Going through every room and drawer would have probably been one of the first things I did after getting stranded on that ship. He had days of doing nothing and he had an entire area of that really small ship he never thought to look through? Really? There could have been a satellite phone in their the entire time.

Overall though, it was enjoyable enough. I'd actually recommend.

I'm Starting a Mutiny
cheekyfilm23 July 2021
This movie could be described by some as boring, and I see that as fair, but my problem with this movie lies elsewhere. There are many excruciatingly long scenes of the character preforming a mundane action, but the cinematography and setting make this mostly easy to watch - great shots of the water and sky throughout. And the main character behaves in a logical manner throughout the film, something you can't take for granted in film today. The film works like a procedural, with Joe Azzopardi giving a serviceable performance as "The Sailor", encountering increasingly peculiar problems, silently tackling each snag with reasoning and intelligence.

This all should add up to an enjoyable experience for me; I don't need a bombastic soundtrack to tell me what to feel (the sparse rumblings and frequencies that serve as a soundtrack here do a good enough job), and I don't need constant mind-numbing action scenes, either. What I do need is some kind of meat on the bones of a story. This whole plot could be described in a few sentences, and you'd miss no symbolism or visual language, minus a few jumpscares. The mood is mysterious and sullen, and without any cherry on top, there's no reason to seek out this frame of mind. A strong ending, or some sort of esoteric wrinkle would've done this movie a world of good (naming the boat after a Mediterranean demigod doesn't count). It's one re-write away from being a great low-budget film. As it stands, it's an artsy movie minus the art.

alexandrakriley6 December 2020
It depends on whether you like these kind of films, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Definite scary moments, and some things I definitely wouldn't have done, but watch it, don't go on reviews, cos I nearly didn't watch it be use of the negativity, and I'm glad I ignored them...was captivated throughout the film....good thing about the end.......well that would be telling.....watch it and see for yourself 👌👌

Boat trip
kosmasp25 December 2020
Well quite trippy indeed - pun sort of intended I reckon. But that being said, you have to suspend your disbelief quite a bit to "enjoy" this. And that may even be a stretch - because enjoying is not the right word for the experience you are about to embark (yes I did it again).

Certain things our main character does are ... well tough to swallow. But if he didn't do certain things the movie would not move forward. Then again, is he alone? Because maybe it isn't his fault at all now is it? Whatever you read into the movie is your perception of things, but I can tell you that the journey you might take here, is not the easiest one. A decent effort to say the least and quite the tour de ... boat/force for our main actor!

I don't want to rock the boat, but this was boring.

Abandoned Adrift Not Alone

Obviously, there are more movies about machines suddenly having a will of their own and starting to make life miserable for their fellow humans. For example, in days long gone, there was Herbie, the love bug, who regularly took over the steering wheel without asking. Admittedly, this movie won't scare you since it was a hilarious family movie. Of a different caliber is the movie "The Car" with a demonic, black Lincoln Continental Mark III car that repeatedly left a rubber trail on the face of an innocent passer-by. Even better and more famous, the glitzy Plymouth Fury '58 in "Christine". A car that could restore its wrinkled bodywork to its original condition without hesitating. And it killed those who bothered its owner. You could say that the "Titanic" made quite a few victims as well. But that wasn't because this mastodon of a boat suddenly started sailing its own course, but rather because an iceberg popped up suddenly. The boat in this movie, on the other hand, is a different story. Sounds exciting, doesn't it?

It does sound exciting. The film itself wasn't. But admit. How exciting can a movie be in which a boat sails its own course? And what if there's a passenger on board who accidentally ended up there? The only thing such a wayward boat can do is try to get that guy off the boat by swinging certain parts in his direction. You can also lock him up in a small room so that he can't move. But these are eventually all the available possibilities that can be used. Unfortunately, you still have to fill up the rest of the film.

And that's what you get the rest of the movie. Uninteresting filler footage. You see how a young fisherman (Joe Azzopardi) leaves his house in the morning and sails his boat across the Maltese azure blue ocean. I suppose to go fishing. I immediately wondered why he had to go so far at sea for this. That aside, because I'm actually a complete layman when it comes to fishing at sea. In any case, he ends up in a fog bank and (literally) bumps into the abandoned sailboat. When he climbs on board to see if anyone is present, he suddenly finds out that his own boat has disappeared. And so he finds himself in a hopeless situation. Completely alone. Without water, without food, and non-working communication tools.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I had a similar feeling about "All is lost". There's nothing wrong with the used images. The endless ocean and dark cloud formations are rewarding objects for making timeless images. Even the footage inside the cursed ship (with its limited surface area) looks professional. But a single man on a boat bobbing around, cannot provide lengthy, entertaining conversations. Apart from a bit of grumbling, swearing, and murmuring, there is nothing to be heard in that area here. And at one point it seemed as if the film was repeating itself. The only highlights you could mention are the toilet scene and the storm suddenly coming up. And of course, the acting of the sole protagonist wasn't bad at all (even if it was limited to staring desperately). But otherwise, in my personal opinion, I thought it was pretty boring. Even the denouement was pretty dull. As if they were also a bit on a wrong track in terms of creativity. That last image of the floating boating on the horizon had the wrong effect on me. It just made me chuckle quietly.

If you get locked in a room Once would you ever ...
dumbfreddyduh4 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Close a door behind you again? NO WAY! Movie well done, has suspense. Yet there was someone on that boat with him. Definitely a weird ending. Why not take the knife (just in case)? Why crawl into yet another small space ... with potential to get locked in, Again? Why not hang or hide by boat after docked? Why jump off boat 2nd time onto a small makeshift dingy in middle of sea? Lots of loose strings! Strange and weird. Many things do not make sense. For no dialogue, one actor, it is well done.
