Warning: Spoilers
By the time I'm reviewing this one episode. I randomly decided to rewatch this and it's fine for the most part. But I take issue with Tom deciding to wake up Penny to tell her about her mother passing. Don't do this in real life. To anyone (with some exception) but never to a child. Allow them that peaceful sleep. Because their entire life has shifted once they know. I wouldn't even contact my teenage son at a pool party when our cat died tragically and oddly. That's very small potatoes to losing a parent. I have no idea why they thought this was a good idea. I just don't want anyone to see this and think this is the way to handle an awful situation like this.

Reasonable start
Kingslaay11 March 2018
2018 kicks off with a slow and reasonable start for Designated Survivor.

The writers did a good job to show how Kirkman would react to the death of his wife. There were many ways they could have gone with such as him overcome with emotion but chose to go with someone finding it hard to embrace the loss.

I am a fan of the show will tune in to see how things build up and are laid out. This show has some great potential and acting power to deliver a strong punch.

Warning: Spoilers
I have ripped on Designated Survivor seemingly since the beginning, but this was actually a solid episode. The stuff with the therapy sessions I don't really care for. They do that on every cop show, someone dies or an officer shoots someone and they have weeks of it, but maybe it will go a little better on this program.

Glad to see them actually have bad guys in Cuba too. You would think a left-wing network would not allow that, but the US/Cuba dynamic is always fun and more programs should expand it.

Decent episode

Some of the reviews are a little harsh I think. The episode is okay as far as story line goes and I am delighted to see 'Danny' from west wing as the councillor.

I agree the series is in danger of losing its appeal but I am still a fan so cannot wait to watch the next episode.

The President's Burden

Kirkman is full of grief and anger. He is pretty much immobile due to the death of his wife. While it was a death from carelessness, he has every right to be filled with vengeful thinking. We sit in on his therapy sessions with a shrink played by Timothy Busfield. In the middle of all this, a group of American politicians and aides are captured in Cuba and taken hostage. The negotiations raise a red flag. It's an interesting dilemma. Hannah has a surprise at the conclusion.

Did I miss something? Who is Evan Beeman and why was he arrested for the death of the First Lady?

Jumped the Shark

While this show started out with an interesting premise, it is been steadily losing ground. With this episode, it finally committed suicide. It is blatantly obvious that the riders of this episode have zero understanding of Cuba, it's political situation, or even this geography. The characters are cardboard cut outs of stereo typical Latin American misconceptions. They don't even have Cuban accents. The suggestion that 30,000 rebels could be operating within Cuba, a country with one of the most powerful militaries iin all of Latin America and a internal political watchdog organization that rivals Stalinesque Soviet union is ludicrous beyond comprehension.

Reaching out all over the place
bowstead20 September 2018
I am getting really annoyed by the use of the clichéd phrase 'reach out' throughout this series - used by Americans (well, they do use it sometimes, but not in every second sentence), foreigners (Cubans, seriously?) and (supposedly) British people. In the original English, however, the phrase means 'to offer help or support', or, possibly, to try to communicate in order to seek a compromise. It does not mean 'contact' or 'get in touch', which is the meaning it clearly has in this series. Only one writer? That would explain a lot.

It just gets worse

Every episode you hope it will get better. It doesn't, even after the mid season breaker it comes back with a whimper.
