How well do you know ...
kosmasp2 December 2020
The thriller genre? Or the person next to you? Close to you? Actually a "real" sleeper wouldn't even know themselves now would they? But this is quite straight forward thriller stuff. And while I am fond of the main actress in this (not just visually speaking), it is not like she will hold your attention for the whole movie or run time.

Cliches come and go and I would think that most will be able to predict where this is going, even before it shows us any hint of that. Still I've seen so many other movies that are worse than this ... a tv thriller, that might float your boat then

Blame the Russians!
phd_travel27 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Got to praise Lifetime for trying to do a different theme from the usual wacko story.

It's a my hubby is a Russian spy story. It's not very tightly written and the plot holes aren't explained fully but its okay for one watch.

Taut Made-For-TV Spy Thriller...
vnssyndrome8927 September 2023
SLEEPER (TV Movie 2018) Time to Read: 1:43 min 5.5 out of 10 stars

BASIC PLOT: Jennifer Jones (Kara Killmer) has mixed feelings about her upcoming wedding anniversary. She loves her husband Freddy (Brett Donahue), but something is off in their relationship. JJ has attributed her dissatisfaction to her recent miscarriage, but in her heart, she knows something else is wrong. Freddy is hiding things from her, and she thinks it might be an affair. Her suspicions seem to be confirmed, when she sees Freddy arguing in the street, with an unknown woman (Rayisa Kondracki). It seems like a passionate argument, but when she asks Freddy about it, he tells her it was just a disgruntled customer. JJ knows Freddy is keeping things from her. He's been distant, and he talks in his sleep, sometimes in what sounds like a foreign language. Before JJ can process all this further, a car deliberately runs Freddy over, right in from of her. She saw the driver clearly, but she can't discern a motive as to why her husband, a florist, would have unknown enemies. One strange incident after another, leads JJ's life spiraling into a nether world of spies and intrigue. Her reality has become unrecognizable, and she's just found out, she's pregnant again. Will Freddy wake up, and be able to explain, or will the danger surrounding her, swallow her for good?

WHAT WORKS: *ALL THE ACTING IS ABOVE AVERAGE This is a well made, well acted, made-for-tv spy thriller. It is low budget, so it does have limitations, but the principal actors more than make up for this. Kara Killmer is great as JJ, a woman whose life is turned upside down by a series of disturbing revelations. All of the actors, even the ancillaries, do a fine job.

*THE SCRIPT IS BETTER THAN MOST MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES Kudos to Thom Richardson for an above average, low budget script, which almost falls into the category of an atmospheric. JJ's life is turned so upside down, it feels like she's outside of the world looking in, at what used to be. She's isolated, and so the viewer is as well. Great execution!

*EXCELLENT TRAILER! And these days, that's not something I say often. It was taught, suspenseful, and definitely made me want to watch the movie.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK: *SPIES ARE TRAINED TO WATCH FOR FOLLOWERS I think when Freddy (Brett Donahue) and Anna (Rayisa Kondracki) are fighting, they would feel JJ watching, and then following. It's a minor point, but it could have been fixed by some very minor script adjustment (having JJ hide because Freddy feels her gaze etc).

*TERRIBLE COVER ART I'm so sick of seeing bad cover art, it looks like it took about five minutes to finish. Come on people, it's not that hard!

*GOOFS: When JJ calls Barbara, she gets her voicemail, the message says, "leave a message after the tone," there's never a tone, but JJ leaves a message anyway.

TO RECOMMEND, OR NOT TO RECOMMEND, THAT IS THE QUESTION: *If you are a fan of TV movies, then give this a try! It's definitely above average in writing (Thom Richardson), acting and directing (Philippe Gagnon). It's a taut, small budget spy thriller, perfect for a lazy afternoon. Enjoy!

CLOSING NOTES: *This is a made-for-tv movie, please keep that in mind before you watch\rate it. TV movies have a much lower budget, and so your expectations should be adjusted.

*I have no connection to the film, or production in ANY way. This review was NOT written in ANY way by a bot. I am just an honest viewer, who wishes for more straight forward reviews, and better entertainment. Hope I helped you out.

It's bad....
andrewrye-065358 April 2018
Badly written, worse acting and no direction. I thought this was a lifetime movie but it's actually worse. Don't believe the rating (6.6 at the time of writing) or the only other riview that gave it 10. It stinks. Paper thin plot and there is no twist or at least not an unexpected twist. No, I take that back, no twist. Ignore at all costs. A 2 for this stinker.

Quite a secret he's been keeping from her
bkoganbing26 December 2018
Sleeper is the story of the marriage between Kara Killmer and Brett Donahue. They seem like an ideal couple, he's a florist she a real estate agent. But Donahue has been keeping one big secret from her.

If anyone saw the Sidney Poitier/River Phoenix movie Little Nikita than you have some idea what's going on here. It also was not one of the best films for either of those two stars. But at least that film had those two going for it.

Apparently there are a whole lot of Sleeper agents in the USA left over from the Cold War and ready for use if things heat up. Donahue knows who and where they are, the Russians want him and so do we.

As for Killmer she hasn't a clue. But she spots hubby with a beautiful woman Rayisa Kondracki and assumes there's an affair. She starts poking into her husband's business and not in her wildest dreams did she suspect this.

Sleeper is just as far fetched as Little Nikita and not as good.

Awful even for Lifetime
jroyals-043416 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I realize the bar for Lifetime movies is not a high one but man this is a stinker. Talk about far-fetched! The main character is so gullible to believe her husband is a florist and he totally manipulates her. Lifetime portrays women as idiots instead of being empowering. Then she holds up a gun to another woman and gets close enough to be disarmed. All the implausibilities pile up within a an hour and it became pointless to keep watching this dreck. It doesn't help that the lead actress has zero range and knows one note.

Trying to squeeze The Americans into 86 minutes is impossible, but...
amirams14 December 2018
I might have still given it two stars rather than one if only the acting were at least close to decent. Sorry, Kara Kilmer is no Keri Russel, Brett Donahue is no Matthew Rhys, and Barbara Gordon is surely no Margo Martindale. So there you have it, a whiter shade of pale.

Sucks big time
jacobphilipsen11 August 2018
Plot seemed interesting at first, but completely lacked any originality, suspense, or genuine twist. Poor acting. A waste of time.

Well, I liked it!
monicaspurpledoor2 February 2021
I actually enjoyed this. Not your usual daytime movie of a crazy person trying to destroy someone's life. This was different and I found it a good watch.

Bad EVERYTHING... with huge dumb holes
kvnnagel3 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I can hear the wife now " I should have known when the only person who came to our wedding was his Creepy Ass mom"... ok... WHY would a Russian Spy that's 32 years old have a CCCP Cigarette lighter WHEN HE DOESNT SMOKE? All this movie proves is that if anyone made a nickel in this movies production... I'm in the wrong business.

Don't Waste Your Time
This movie was dumber than a box of rocks. It was full of bad acting and bad gun handling. Kara Killmer was playing a dumber than dumb blonde. People were attempting to speak Russian. The plot was beyond stupid.

I wish I could have my wasted 1h 30mins back. Don't even think about watching this. It's so bad. I don't know what made me choose this movie on Netflix. It made me question all my life decisions. Please, just don't watch this. It's not worth it. What the hell even

Don't do it
kavyashah-5292517 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Wasted time of my life That I will never get back. The writing is awful, they're trying so hard, the plot is so I obvious and storyline so tactless. Typical Americans "we won the Cold War and my husband is a Russian spy". The acting was probably the only thing worse than the plot. I was cringing for the people who created this movie. How is this even allowed to be on Netflix? I write better fan fiction in my free time and can make better movies in my garage and a handy cam.
