- Jennifer Jones is a not-so-happy wife with a recent miscarriage and a lying husband who gets into a sudden accident, putting him in a coma. Determined to find out the truth about her husband's suspected infidelity, she discovers a whole new life that she didn't know her husband had that puts a big question mark on their relationship.
- The story starts with Jennifer Jones, or JJ (Kara Kilmer), shooting her husband Freddy (Brett Donahue).
The story flashes back and shows JJ and her best friend Connie (Mylène Dinh-Robic) discussing JJ's upcoming 7th anniversary. JJ is a real estate agent in the Washington, DC, area. Freddy, owner of a flower shop, surprises her that night with a romantic dinner of pizza and beer. A recent miscarriage has made her depressed, and she asks Freddy over dinner if he still loves her, to which he answers "of course".
While they are out, a woman, Anna (Rayisa Kondracki) breaks into their home, and leaves undetected as they arrive home.
During the night, Freddy is talking in his sleep. The next morning, while getting a coffee, JJ sees Freddy in front of his flower delivery truck arguing with Anna. When he leaves, JJ follows him and sees him sitting alone in a park. She calls him as she watches him, and he tells her it's really busy at the store he's in, and that he will call her later. As she watches, he burns a piece or paper or a photo.
JJ tells Connie about the incident and says that she suspects that Freddy is having an affair. She says she saw Freddy burning something with a lighter that she's never seen before. Connie recommends she just confront Freddy with the suspicion.
JJ goes to Freddy's work (JJ's Flowers) and has a peek at Freddy's phone before he comes out from the back room. JJ tells Freddy that she saw him arguing with a woman. Freddy claims that it was a disgruntled customer who was angry over her order, and that he just went to the park for a few minutes to himself.
That night, Freddy is talking in his sleep again, and JJ can't make out what he's saying. While he sleeps, she searches his pocket and finds the lighter he used to burn the paper / photo. It has CCCP on the front.
The next morning, JJ is n the bathroom throwing up, when Freddy finds his lighter missing. He and JJ are talking, and JJ tells him that he was speaking in his sleep, saying names with a foreign accent. Freddy brushes it off.
Freddy arrives at the flower shop and puts up a "back in 30 minutes" sign. He prepares a flower order and goes out to deliver it. He delivers the flowers to Arthur Stern's (Joe Cobden) office reception. Arthur meets Freddy in a park, says he got his "summons". Arthur is drunk and disheveled, and tells Freddy he regrets knowing him, that his wife has left him. Freddy tells him to take some responsibility for his life. Freddy gives Arthur a flash drive, but Arthur throws it away, and says he will be resigning tomorrow. He threatens to go to the FBI, but Freddy tells him he's already in too deep. Arthur says he won't let Freddy ruin his life anymore, and he leaves.
JJ arrives home to find someone broke into the house. She calls Freddy, and tells him she's going to call 911, but he insists she get out of the house and wait for him to get home. As Freddy parks across the street from the house and is crosses the street, he's hit by a Jaguar driven by Arthur. Arthur drives away quickly as JJ calls 911 to get an ambulance.
Connie meets JJ at the hospital, and JJ tells her about the accident and the break in. The doctor (Daniel Brochu) tells her that Freddy has two bruised ribs and a concussion which is causing swelling on the brain. He's still unconscious, but the doctor thinks he should be OK in a day or two. JJ calls and leaves a voice mail for Freddy's mother, Barbara (Barbara Gordon), who lives in San Diego and who she has only met twice. JJ stays with Freddy while Connie leaves for the evening.
The next morning, Detective Brent (Mark Camacho) comes to talk to JJ at the hospital. They go for a walk and a coffee, and she tells the detective that the driver stopped, looked back at her, then drove away. She gives the detective a description of the driver. Detective Brent asks if Freddy has any enemies, and if there's anything else relevant, but JJ says no, and doesn't tell him about the break in.
Back at the hospital, JJ passes Anna in the hall. She tries to chase her but misses her. She finds Barbara in the lobby, who apparently was visiting friends in Washington DC when JJ called her. Barbara is reluctant to hold Freddy's hand. JJ questions the nurse (Lisa Bronwyn Moore) who the woman was (Anna) that was in Freddy's room, but she doesn't know. Barbara offers to sit with Freddy so that JJ can go home and take a shower.
At home, JJ starts straightening up the house from the break in. She looks out back and notices the door to the shed is open and can see someone moving around. She takes a poker and goes outside. It's Barbara, who says that Freddy told her that there was an old box of photos in the shed, but leaves when JJ finds her, and says she'll ask Freddy about the box when he wakes up.
Back in the house, JJ is trying to find something to eat for her and Barbara. Connie arrives with take out Italian food. Connie asks Barbara where she's from, and Barbara accuses her of being nosy. She says she's from San Diego and lives alone since her husband died. Barbara says she's tired and retires for the night. JJ and Connie chat, and say that Barbara is a strange bird, that Freddy said her dad was in Portland, that they didn't have friends in DC. JJ announces to Connie that she's pregnant. But she expresses her fears that Freddy is having an affair. Connie tells her not to worry and is sworn to secrecy until JJ can tell Freddy.
When JJ goes upstairs, she finds Barbara is not in her room, and finds her outside in the shed again. Through a window, she sees Barbara trying to open a safe in the shed (which was hidden by a box), but then she leaves. JJ goes in and tries to open the safe herself but can't get the combination right.
The next morning, Barbara's bed hasn't been slept in, and she's not around. JJ goes to an ATM and tries to withdraw money, but her account says that there are no funds available. JJ drives to the flower store while talking to the bank. They tell her that the accounts were cancelled, but she says that's impossible, because he's been in a coma since the night before. AT the flower store, she goes into the cash box and takes some money for expenses. She notices a light is on in the basement of the store and goes downstairs. She finds an area hidden behind a pile of boxes with an office. On the desk are some electronics, including recording devices, burner cell phones, and a gun is in the drawer. She opens a folder that has a picture of Arthur in it. She takes the folder and leaves.
Arriving at the hospital, she finds Barbara at Freddy's bedside. The doctor comes in to tell her that the brain swelling has gone down, and that Freddy should wake up any time. JJ tells Barbara that she saw her in the shed during the night and about the safe. Barbara says it's none of her business, that if Freddy wanted her to know about it, he would have told her. Barbara threatens JJ, says that if she calls the police, her whole life will come crashing down on her. She calls JJ naïve and leaves.
JJ gets a call and goes to meet Detective Brent. She tells him she had a run in with her mother. The Detective shows her a traffic cam photo of the hit and run suspect, and JJ says that it's him. The detective asks if she knows him but she says she doesn't. He says that he feels she's not being direct with him. JJ tells him that she suspects Freddy of having an affair. He feels she may be connected. JJ heads back to the hospital.
Back at the hospital, JJ pulls out Arthur's file. She calls Arthur's office and asks to speak with him. They say he's not in, but she confirms that he's in town. JJ brings the lighter to a pawn shop and asks about it. It turns out it's a KGB lighter from the Soviet Union, and the shop owner, Bud (Neil Kroetsch), offers her $50 for it.
JJ goes to Arthur's home, and when he doesn't want to answer, she threatens to call the cops. Arthur finally answers and she asks why he tried to kill her husband. Arthur says she doesn't have any idea who it is, how does a florist have a file on him. Because he built "Stern Net", he says that Freddy was blackmailing him, wanting priority information. He says that Freddy ruined his live, that he lost his family, and tells JJ to get off his property.
Anna and Barbara are shown siting together in an apartment, speaking Russian. Barbara tells Anna "they" want her to kill him that night.
JJ goes back to the secret office at the florist shop. While there, the nurse at the hospital spots Anna in Freddy's room, and calls JJ. She rushes over to the hospital, grabbing Freddy's gun along the way.
Anna leaves the hospital and gets into an SUV, but JJ is waiting outside and follows her. When Anna stops and gets out of her car at Arthur Stern's home, JJ calls Detective Brent, but there's no answer. She take the gun and follows Anna into the house and witnesses Anna killing Arthur. Anna spots JJ and confronts her, pointing guns at each other. Anna tells JJ that she (JJ) hasn't been trained for this, and says that she's always wanted to meet her. When asked how she knows Freddy, Anna says they grew up together, and tells JJ about a scar that she knows Freddy has. She distracts JJ and disarms her.
Anna asks JJ what she saw upstairs. JJ says that she saw the murder. Anna asks again what JJ saw, and JJ says "nothing". Anna asks what she is going to tell Freddy. JJ tells her that she's pregnant. Anna say Freddy would never forgive her if she hurt JJ. JJ hits her with a statue and runs out.
JJ goes to the police station to talk to Detective Brent. She tells the Detective that Anna killed Arthur Stern. She gives him the file, and the Detective says that it's a federal matter now. He says that he was told to back off but says that he'll call the FBI to speak with her. While waiting for the Detective, she receives a call that Freddy has awakened at the hospital. She leaves the police station, and heads for the hospital. Freddy says they want to keep him for observation. He remembers being hit, and JJ says it was Arthur Stern. He asks who else has been here. She tells him Barbara, and he asks about Anna. He looks out the window and says she's here. He says they have to get out of here now. JJ asks who is Anna, why does she have a mother who isn't a mother, about the secret office at shop, and more. The couple locks a nurse in the bathroom and leave the room just as Anna is coming down the hall, avoiding her. JJ asks if his mother, Barbara, is Russian. He says yes, but she's not his mother. JJ tells Freddy she's pregnant. Freddy says they've got to get out, then he'll tell her everything.
Anna calls Barbara to tell her that Freddy and JJ left the hospital together. JJ and Freddy go home and open the safe in the shed. He hands JJ a burner phone that has one number, and there's money in the safe from their account. JJ says she wants Freddy to tell her everything. Barbara comes in and holds them at gunpoint, and brings them into the house. Barbara says that she's Freddy's handler, and that JJ doesn't even know Freddy's real name. JJ realizes they're Russian spies, and Barbara says they need to leave. JJ passes out, just as Connie rings the front doorbell. Barbara and Freddy run out the back door.
JJ wakes up in a strange house. Connie says it's her house, but JJ says it's not. Connie says it's her real house, that she's an FBI agent who has been investigating Freddy. Connie says she wants to help her but JJ is upset, saying their whole friendship has been a lie.
Barbara and Freddy are in Anna's apartment, talking about going to Moscow the next day. Freddy says he's not going, that he's not going to abandon JJ. He says he's been in America for 15 years, that there's nothing for him in Russia. He threatens to shoot Barbara in the head.
Connie comes out of her bedroom and meets Connie's partner, Agent Doug Emory (Jason Deline). Connie tells him that Freddy's father was a high ranking KGB officer named Volkov in Russia, that he was responsible for a sleeper spy force hidden in the US. Volkov was so paranoid that he never gave anyone a list of the spies, except his own son. They show JJ that there is an extensive list of sleeper agents in the US, and that they need the list from Freddy. They say they were 3 days away from picking up Freddy. Connie asks JJ to text Freddy on the burner phone.
Freddy is leaving the apartment, having told Barbara not to follow him, but Anna stops him in the hall. Freddy asks her to leave him alone, and says he has to go see his wife. He asks her if her life would have been different if she hadn't grown up across the street from his family. He says that Anna always protected him as kids, and that he needs that protection again. Anna threatens to shoot him, but he says "do what you must" and walks away.
JJ arranges to meet Freddy at one of the real estate properties she's got listed. She slaps Freddy as soon as he walks in the house. He says they need to go, but she insists he sit down and tell her what's going on. She asks if he's happy with their life. She says she had been feeling dissatisfied, restless. Freddy said he felt ashamed about not telling her everything, that he was going to tell her everything the day he got hit. JJ says she is angry but the situation has also made her excited - that it's "us against the world". JJ gets a call from Connie, and says they'll be ready. She pulls a gun and points it at Freddy, saying she has to kill him now. Barbara and Anna pull up outside. Freddy tells JJ to put the gun down, that he will turn himself in to the FBI, that he'll do whatever she wants. JJ tells him not to lie.
Barbara pulls a gun on JJ, tells her to drop the gun. JJ says she won't let Freddy be with Anna. She shoots Freddy. Anna asks why she shot Freddy. The FBI come in and arrest Barbara and Anna.
Flash forward to JJ's house, which is now sold. Connie knocks on the door and walks in, looking for JJ. Connie says not everyone gets to shoot their husband. JJ says it was "freeing". She asks Connie if she wants anything before the movers come. Connie asks if she's ready to leave all this behind. JJ says yeah, she's ready for a new chapter "and all that". They say their goodbyes.
At the FBI offices, Connie meets with Freddy, and asks if ready to wrap up. She says that his immunity agreement is all set, and gives him information on wire transfers that their new identities. She want to make sure nothing else, but he says he has told her everything about SVR operations in US and Canada. He asks Connie to answer a question for him - why did she help JJ save him? She says there were two reasons - if Russians think he's dead, they'll leave him alone. Connie says JJ was innocent, that didn't deserve it. Freddy asks Connie if she thinks JJ will ever forgive them. Connie says she hopes so. Freddy asks for the second reason. Connie says she wanted to give JJ the opportunity to shoot Freddy. Freddy says yeah, he thinks she liked that, and thanks Connie for the vest.
Freddie picks up some cash from the pawn shop, where she's sold some of their items. As she's driving, she stops and picks up Freddy on the side of the road. They drive away.
