What is "The Enlightenment" Anyway?
ThomasDrufke25 April 2018
In the long list of Flash episodes with irrelevantly clever titles, Fury Rogue turned out to be just another week of The Flash. I was glad to see Neil Sandilands return as The Thinker in a more full capacity however, because of the random and unnecessary appearance of Katie Cassidy's Black Siren (rather Siren X as she's known on Earth-X), it didn't feel like this episode was a Thinker episode at all. Siren wasn't the only one trying to overshadow The Thinker tonight.

Tonight saw the return (and final appearance?) of Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold/Citizen Cold/Leonard Snart. He's one of those arrowverse characters that I've gone up and down on. I despised Miller's performance when he first started and I'm not even sure why, but I've come to really enjoy his various appearances throughout the universe. While it wasn't my favorite performance, his turn tonight was a fitting end, if it is the end, to a solid run on these shows. Heck, it's just fun seeing him play Snart on the protagonist side of things instead of snobby villain he started out as. Providing Barry with emotional support after a death last week was an unexpected way to give Snart screen time, but it sure keeps his character full circle.

But that's also where this episode faulted significantly for me. Because Ralph was never one of my favorite characters, I found it hard to believe Barry would be this shaken up over things. They were trying to compare this death to that of his parents, Ronnie, or Eddie, and I just didn't see it. And it's not like we haven't already had enough of our Arrowverse heroes blaming themselves for a death on the show, hiding their grief, and needing (several) scenes of emotional support from other characters. At this point, these scenes just felt like a waste of space. But that's just me.

We'll see where the story goes with 5 episodes left. I'm not sure I can even consider myself excited at this point. It's been a long time since we got a great episode (besides the one-off Enter Flashtime) and The Thinker hasn't truly made his mark yet. What is "The Enlightenment" anyway?

If you put a monkey at team flash and you made him the Flash I believe he would learn to be better after 4 years. Unfortunately for anyone in Team Flash, Barry Allen isn't a monkey. He never learns and his progression as a character is awfull.

He is in a constant loop of denial and self pity.

New life in the form of Snart with a side of an unnecessary antagonist
~AleXa~24 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Strange nonsequitur episode titles aside, the reemergence of a familiar character in the way of Leonard Snart, aka Citizen Cold as he's known on Earth-X, brought a breath of fresh air and a much-needed dose of nostalgia, like old times.

I actually found the writing smart to finally reveal some weakness and lack of forethought in DeVoe, who I find to be one of the most uninteresting villains in history. We still do not understand his plan or his motivations, and the most interesting story arcs leave room for the audience to sympathize or at minimum understand the main antagonist's motives. His inability to account for human emotion (since he seems to be devoid of it entirely) is a surprising move in the right direction for Team Flash.

Snart was perhaps the shining star in this episode, with a witty and thoughtful performance by Wentworth Miller. He shows his range with the juxtaposition of Earth-X's character to Earth-1's, with an interesting character arc working to teach Barry the importance of expressing his grief, poignantly stating that you cannot run from it.

Where this episode truly shines is finally conveying some emotional content through Barry's struggle with his grief in losing Ralph (Elongated Man). Of course he was not as close to Ralph as other friends he has lost, however his turmoil stems from feeling responsible, not only because he promised him he would save him, but because ultimately he lost his life because he chose Barry's way-to not kill DeVoe when he had the chance. This represents a very real internal conflict that he is finally forced to deal with, and that he is finally able to vocalize with Joe and then later in a therapy session with Iris toward the end.

Meanwhile, Caitlin struggles with the loss of Killer Frost while simultaneously helping to transport and protect Fallout with Flash, Snart, Caitlin, and Joe. You could really feel the team dynamic, and it's always more interesting when underused characters are thrown back into the mix.

Harry finally has to fess up to Cisco that he used the cerebral inhibitor with dark matter after he blows up and destroys Cisco's helmet. His concern for Cisco marks a vast difference between him and HR, and is a welcome surprise from the obvious and predictable direction they were headed.

One question remains: Why exactly would DeVoe run after Siren-X (Earth-X's Black Siren) knocks him down? The man is super intelligent and currently possesses the powers of at least a dozen metas. Was it more about being taken by surprise that Barry froze and there was a variable he didn't account for? Siren-X's role just seemed forced, her motive illogical, and her plot pointless. What was she to gain? Real vengeance would've entailed going after Team Flash directly, not taking Fallout to kill cops.

And on that note, having Siren-X follow Snart through the breach to kill a police force as recompense for losing her Dark Arrow was not only disjointed and weak, but disruptive of the Arrowverse arc since Earth-2's Laurel is currently pretending to be Earth-1's Laurel, as her attack at CCPD was unmasked and very public and would presumably have very real ramifications... The writers of the two shows would benefit from conferring more. They should know by now there's nothing the fans won't notice since they're catering to nerds who are already having to follow multiple universe, timelines, and alternate realities encompassing the same characters, but I'll digress.

And as DeVoe continues to be more asinine and antagonistic to his doting and brilliant wife, one can only count the days until she snaps out of her drug-induced haze and rebels against her robotic sorry excuse for a husband.

Overall, it was refreshing to see Snart's return, breathing some much-needed life and humor back into the season after several failed attempts with newer characters such as Amunet.

Nothing has changed!

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed first half of the season but this second half of the season has become really annoying.

Anyways! Yet another average episode. I love Ralph and I will miss him. I was hoping to see him as permanent member of Team Flash but writers had other plans. On another note, I am sorry but Ralph's death did not have any impact on me. Also, comparing Ralph's death to Barry's parents, H.R, Ronnie and Eddie is not just fair!! We all knew he is going to die because that is part of DeVoe's plan. And Barry yet again feeling guilty for not saving everyone because he is the hero and has to save the whole city, is becoming tiring! Honestly writers should stop making Barry responsible for every other mistake! I am really angry with them.

DeVoe is succeeding in his plan. But still we don't know what his actual plan his? He got all the powers of bus metas just as he planned. So basically Thinker is a meta now with so many powers. I just thought that he will use his mind only to succeed in his plan? But duh! Fastest mind alive definitely needs powers to defeat fastest man alive and acheive his goals!

I don't know how Team Flash is going to defeat DeVoe after everyone has become weak after Ralphy's death and are powerless at the moment. Killer Frost is gone! Vibe does not seemed to be focused on Thinker much because now he has to save Harry also since he is losing his intelligence. Barry is feeling guilty and taking the burden on his shoulders for saving everyone. Iris and Joe comforting Barry and helping the team as much as they can.

Wenworth Miller yet again made his impact in this episode as Snart. I enjoyed Snart's appearance and I will miss him. Since I love Laurel Lance, so seeing her from any Earth will always be interesting for me. Siren X has exposed herself in Earth 1 without any mask, so this means trouble is coming for Black Siren? I have yet to watch Arrow season 6, episode 10 and onwards, so I really do not know if there will be any connection to this in the coming Arrow episodes.

I am not hyped for the final showdown between Team Flash and DeVoe, maybe I will be after next episode. I still remember previous season when I was counting days for each and every episode of The Flash when the final sequence to save Iris started.

I am sure at some point Marlize is going to escape but will she help Team Flash to take down DeVoe?

And the death toll rises
headsound17 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Again we see more innocent people die, all because Barry won't allow the mass murderer, Thinker, to be killed! He should feel guilty for Ralph's death, it was 100% the Flash's fault. Ralph had DeVoe down, but was not allowed to finish him, before he gets up and murders Digby. I would never trust him in combat, he doesn't have the stomach for it. I Afghanistan, he would have been beaten to a pulp, one night, by his fellow squad members.

Ranking/Reviewing every Flash episode: Fury Rogue
lbramson12 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Barry feels guilty for Ralph's death, but teams up with Citizen Cold to safely transport Fallout. This is another good episode, not as good as the last, but still good. I like the themes of greif and dealing with loss, and the action's cool as well. This episode saw the return of Neil Sandilands as The Thinker. Thank god!!! The season was crumbling with body swap and it's over! It's finally over! I'm free from the shackles of the bus metas! Thank the heavens! Thank the lord! Thank my mama! Thank the writers! Thank this episode! Great episode, even though I still have no idea what DeVoe's plan is.

9.3/10-Great!👍👍

A futile attempt to cause sympathy....
blackfirep25 April 2018
As we all know by know, this show features a lot of drama. However, the consistently poor writing kills any sort of sympathy towards some characters (like Barry himself) who never seems to actually grow as a character, but rather makes the same mistakes over and over again.

With Leo coming back, the episode becomes tolerable enough.

Perhaps there was more to the episode that i missed, but the plot progression and the sequence of events is just so incoherent and illogical it infuriates me.

5 stars just because of Snart and Caitlyn.

Bad writing again ...
rvargast17-585-52919625 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Again bad writing and again failing in physics. Siren X and Citizen Cold to color the episode after the darkness of the last episode - good attempt. Too bad the hero is losing itself as the hero as the season continues. Plus the laws of physics failing for the story (when Barry can catch bullets thats flying two times the speed of sound, yet Siren-X can hear him coming and hit him in the middle) then both firing the cold guns to cool Fallout instead of take the cause out first - its look them kids (or the writers). Otherwise fine episode but its a pattern how the hero lose a fight (and the survival instrinct should be stronger then the get yourself together talk). Looks like the show entered a stall and now in a flat spin towards the ground. Well see where is flying.
