What is "The Enlightenment" Anyway?
25 April 2018
In the long list of Flash episodes with irrelevantly clever titles, Fury Rogue turned out to be just another week of The Flash. I was glad to see Neil Sandilands return as The Thinker in a more full capacity however, because of the random and unnecessary appearance of Katie Cassidy's Black Siren (rather Siren X as she's known on Earth-X), it didn't feel like this episode was a Thinker episode at all. Siren wasn't the only one trying to overshadow The Thinker tonight.

Tonight saw the return (and final appearance?) of Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold/Citizen Cold/Leonard Snart. He's one of those arrowverse characters that I've gone up and down on. I despised Miller's performance when he first started and I'm not even sure why, but I've come to really enjoy his various appearances throughout the universe. While it wasn't my favorite performance, his turn tonight was a fitting end, if it is the end, to a solid run on these shows. Heck, it's just fun seeing him play Snart on the protagonist side of things instead of snobby villain he started out as. Providing Barry with emotional support after a death last week was an unexpected way to give Snart screen time, but it sure keeps his character full circle.

But that's also where this episode faulted significantly for me. Because Ralph was never one of my favorite characters, I found it hard to believe Barry would be this shaken up over things. They were trying to compare this death to that of his parents, Ronnie, or Eddie, and I just didn't see it. And it's not like we haven't already had enough of our Arrowverse heroes blaming themselves for a death on the show, hiding their grief, and needing (several) scenes of emotional support from other characters. At this point, these scenes just felt like a waste of space. But that's just me.

We'll see where the story goes with 5 episodes left. I'm not sure I can even consider myself excited at this point. It's been a long time since we got a great episode (besides the one-off Enter Flashtime) and The Thinker hasn't truly made his mark yet. What is "The Enlightenment" anyway?
