I've really liked this episode. It was funny(which is very hard to find any animation that can be funny) and interesting at the same time. Plot was good, easy to follow, not complicate structure. I like that it has some deep lessons inside of it. For example, about your faith, about your life, changing things, about complaining of smth. Strong start.

Not as I expected, but funny
"Disenchantment" is not the greatest comedy show, the start is a bit rough. The best thing is the voice acting and animation. The pacing is not the best. With weird pauses without any dialogue or music. Mark Mothersbaugh the composer delivers a unique theme. But otherwise than that, the score feels a bit empty. The Humor is mostly lying in the dialogue and imagery. But it just doesn't work very well. I haven't watched "The Simpsons" so it's probably just me. Overall it's fairly enjoyable and entertaining. You can watch it and have a good time.

A Princess, an Elf, and a Demon Walk Into a Bar

Disenchantment S1 E1

A Princess, an Elf, and a Demon Walk Into a Bar

Well you know it's going to be odd when the opening credits feature several smiling heads mounted on pikes.

Princess Bean doesn't seem to be a very good princess.

"I had the dogs lick me clean. Twice".

That one elf looks just like Lisa Simpson. We think that they might be related.

Stab yourself in the head much?

That guy hides an elf punching bag under his kilt! Cool.

The food at The Kraken Barrel is not what it's cracked up to be.

Why is it? Horses are always neigh sayers?

Honestly a great start to a great show

I like both Futurama and The Simpsons even though both have gone through rough times so I was looking forward to this new show because both of those were great when they began. This first episode is a great introduction to this new world that we are going to experience. Elfo, Luci, and Bean are great protagonists and this show exceeded expectations. Great first episode and can't waut to watch more

I believed before watching that the character introduction and how they meet up would be cheesey, but no I absolutely love this first introduction and love the series, A very clever show made by a very clever man!

Worse than both Futurama and The Simpsons
mxkov19 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Wooh. That was bad. NOT the worst thing I've ever seen, but...I have to say this...it's worse than the modern Simpsons episodes. And I'll tell you why.

First I'll note the good things. First of all, the animation is great! Not perfect, but much higher quality than some other shows I've reviewed before *cough* TheHollow *cough*. The music is very gripping, which you think would add some more suspense to action scenes or emotional moments. Unfortunately, it just feels out of place, since everything else SUUUUUCKKS.

Now the bad. Let's start with the jokes, since they're the least terrible thing. Some of them were clever, and I must admit a let out a few laughs with some of the Demon's one liners, but overall, they just seemed to stick to one standard, safe joke routine. For example, the joke where someone says something "Well, it can't be that difficult" and gets immediately contradicted. This is funny...the first few times, but I've seen this SO often in The Simpsons and even repeatedly in this episode, and after a while, it kind of loses its impact.

The pacing just seems off, and by that I mean all of the characters just seem to be introduced so quickly. I know more and more frequently nowadays shows are starting off without introducing characters properly, but the difference with those shows and this episode is that you learn about them in a slow and tidy way. This episode just kinda shoves down your throat "HEY! HE'S AN ELF" "HEY! SHE'S A PRINCESS" and it really feels off. Also, the character voices are hella annoying. Like, come on, John DiMaggio, you can do better.

Overall...eh. I will review these episodes weekly (Every Monday) but I don't have high expectations. All of Matt's previous shows haven't been story driven, and give the characters time to develop over a season. But now, since he needs to fit a storyline into 10 30 minute episodes, all of the scenes feel super rushed. Anyway, in conclusion...the first episode of Disenchantment...didn't leave a good impact.

Matt Groening has officially jumped the shark
badbilly3d5 September 2018
Groening and his buddies have been past their prime since 2002, and this show seems to be the final nail in their coffin. I don't fault Groening for getting the show on the air and getting himself, and some old friends, one last paycheck but this show is absolutely unwatchable. It is everything that the simpsons would have pilloried in 1993: formulaic, bad jokes, predictable, pretentious, etc.

People will see Groening's name and give it a watch based on that alone and for this I do not blame Netflix for putting it on the air. Having said that I can think of many better ways to spend thirty minutes like staring directly at the sun or lying down in the middle of the 405 during rush hour.

WHAT IN THE WORLD DID I JUST WATCH ???
abhijit-8587925 August 2018
This show was terrrible !!!

I watched it because it was on Netflix and as soon as I saw Matt Groening's name I was ready to dedicate my entire night to binging it.

I went into this show expecting to love it. Instead what I found was absolute garbage. The voice acting was poor the story was weak. The jokes were cringe.

Look I am fine with shows with a strong female lead. But I find it *CRINGE* to watch a show where the entire story line revolves around that theme. It just tries so hard to be edgy.

I was patient. No one can fault me for that. I trusted Matt Groening and hoped that his writing wouldn't fail me.

It just didn't happen :(.

Feels like a fever dream
jesusonasurfboard14 August 2021
How do I put this? Well, this whole episode feels like the dream you had that one time after a night out where its very elaborate, a lot of things happened and doesn't really make sense. I feel like too many themes are introduced in a single episode, a bit overwhelming really.
