Had some laughs - worth a look if you're bored
Mikelikesnotlikes9 March 2018
DEAD SHACK was a random pick that had the sort of honest reviews on IMDB that make me watch a B grade movie on purpose. I didn't know Lauren Holly was in it until her name popped up at the start and she's still got that certain something.

Some parts of the script had very deliberate, very cringe inducing *crickets* moments. Some of the dialogue was so natural you'd swear they were just having a dysfunctional family argument at times. It is also over the top, ridiculous and contains some proper laughs. It's a Zombie flick after all, and it treads the path competently.

Lots of flaws but fun enough for you to forgive them.

A light hearted isolated zombie-and-mouse game of a movie that's an easy, breezy watch
mwilson19766 May 2020
A dysfunctional family vacation turns bloody when three teenage kids discover that their new neighbour for the weekend Lauren Holly (looking pretty kick ass kitted out in skin tight bite-proof tactical gear), is killing off people to feed to her zombie family in yet another cabin in the woods horror comedy. This ode to 80's genre flicks written and directed by Peter Rich (his band HUMANS provide the movies cool synth score), benefits from some likeable characters and good performances as well as some top notch practical effects which hit the killswitch hard when it counts (lots of shotgun blasts and exploding heads). It doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel, but for a light hearted isolated zombie-and-mouse game of a movie this is an easy, breezy watch.

deserve to die
SnoopyStyle3 November 2017
Roger takes his two kids, Summer and Colin, and their friend Jason to a vacation cabin in the woods. Summer hates her young stepmom Lisa. The kids take a walk and find a house with disturbing evidence. A woman (Lauren Holly) brings home two douchebags and the kids spy her feeding the two men to her zombie.

Summer and Jason are a little bit adorable. Colin is annoyingly stupid. Stupidity is one of the more annoying tropes in teen characters if they're not funny at it. Roger is also really stupid but at least, he can blame the alcohol. I'm actually with who gets killed. I wouldn't mind if we lose one more specific character. This is a low budget comedy horror indie competently made. It's not horrible but it's not good either.

If you want to waste your time then watch this one.
deloudelouvain5 April 2018
I have the honor to be the first reviewer to tell you this movie is just garbage. Believe me when I tell you the positive reviews come from people that are involved with the movie or that know somebody that is. There is absolutely nothing good to say about Dead Shack. I gave it a two instead of a one star rating because I saw worse and that's the only reason. The acting was definitely not good, mediocre at best. The story itself is boring, even if you're just a slasher fan. About the comedy factor that apparently every other reviewer liked it is just the humor of a ten year old kid, in other words pretty lame. I hate the so called horror movies where when you have imminent danger, the kind of danger where a zombie is about to rip your head of and eat your brains, the actors just find the time to have a little conversation about nothing instead of fighting the evil until death. It's just ridiculous, like this whole movie. A complete waste of time. You want to watch something gore with humor? Watch Ash vs Evil Dead instead, that at least is quality.

Funky Little Shack
scythertitus30 August 2018
This film is much better than it has any right to be and that all comes from writing and characterisation. They clearly didn't have the budget or time to put together something truly polished, but what they made is pretty much better than many horrors out there today.

The fact that you actually care about the characters and what happens to them is remarkable, and it doesn't have to rely on a crazy villain or nudity to get your attention. The dialogue is immature, but it is meant to be, seeing as how the leads are all adolescents. The only real downside is the pacing and editing as both are a little jarring and detract from the overall quality of the production.

Overall I would definitely recommend this movie to any comedy horror fan. It isn't the most hilarious or gory, but it is smart and clearly the effort was made to produce a unique story, and it works.

Boring
Stevieboy6667 July 2018
Canadian film about a family going for a short break at a cabin in the woods only to discover that the mysterious woman next-door keeps pet zombies! Why, I don't know. That's some good aerial photography and a haunting score by Humans. However I found the film to be slow, boring in fact, and not once did I laugh. This apparently is a comedy but in my opinion it was completely flat. No doubt aimed at a teenage audience and I'm late 40's so that may partly explain why I didn't "get it". Some seriously fake reviews on here.

Bad Writing! Stupid characters in stupid situations.
J-Kidin8 July 2020
Oh wow, I was hopeful because it seemed to have some humor, and potential for some horror fun, but it quickly turned stupid and annoying. Also it became obvious that they edited to make it more PG13 at best.

It's so difficult to watch actors acting badly because of bad writing and bad dialogue, and trying too hard to be funny. Which, unfortunately, this movie checked off all those boxes. It also didn't help with the directing choices, that made us think- really? What a waste of film! Watching the characters make such stupid choices and act so incredibly stupid was a challenge but we made it to the meh ending.

Too funny
kosmasp18 October 2017
The puns are just flying left and right. It does not care about being political correct and if you don't mind your horror to have a lot of comedy in it, then you will not be disappointed. Quite the opposite is the case with this one. The dad character is really goes for it and probably would not qualify for any Dad of the year awards or what not. His choice for new wife, how he "handles" his kids or life in general is borderline to say the least.

But it's funny in a very crazy kind of way. And it's more than entertaining. And then there is all the blood and gore and horror to be dealt with. It's almost an added bonus, if you will. Even if I would have liked this to go another direction, it almost holds its premise throughout. Which is a good thing, tone-wise ... I liked it

Pointless.
jmbovan25 September 2019
Neighbor has zombies. Annoying family (with guests) vacation next door. Largely what happens is that annoying characters make dumb choices and get involved with the neighbor zombie keeper. There is no reason the neighbor keeps the zombies (past the inital three that are her family--so why does she keep random others?!) isn't even addressed or how the zombies started. The rest of the characters are loud, rude, and awkward. And poorly acted. The one character who isn't all that is so meek and timid that he is just as annoying as the others (just on the opposite end of the dichtomy). Wouldnt have cared who survived. Production was good and gory, hence the 4.

Rather fun and highly enjoyable entry
kannibalcorpsegrinder9 August 2017
Taking a relaxing trip to the woods, a young kid joining his best friends' family on a camping vacation in the wilderness finds their next-door neighbor is keeping a cannibalistic secret with her and must find a way to force their parents to believe them in order to get away alive.

This here wasn't all that bad of an effort. One of the more impressive elements present in this one is the fact that there's quite a large amount of atmosphere built up here alongside the surprisingly funny comedy. The opening half, filled with looming shots of the woods at play here as well as creating a strong central air that grows progressively more intense the more this one unfolds as their discoveries in the woods and finally the first peak in the house makes for quite a strong set-up. Once they actually witness what's going on in the cabin, where the deformed creature is feasting on the victim they've been spying on makes for a nice launch into the latter half where the zombified creature is loose and they must rely on each other to survive as the action there is quite fun. From the surprise visit to their house which features the great brawl being observed from the hiding spot that has to remain undiscovered to the chaos of the creature ambushing them in the house and being forced to deal with the shambling creature and the victim stashed away to the later confrontation back in their house with the transformed girlfriend, they give this the kind of big high-end action required to enjoy here. That all leads into the film's biggest action scene with the final retaliation back at the cabin where this one really manages to score nicely with the outdoor confrontations with the zombies, the final brawling in the house where everyone tends to take a little damage and leading up to the gruesome resolution sequence that's quite fitting considering the bloodshed unleashed. Given that the fun of all this is from the rather great comedy between the group, whipping off one- liners and insults against each other as well as engaging in some rather hilarious situations that make this feel far funnier than it really is, adding another nice layer to the film. While these here do make this one rather fun, there are a few minor issues to be had here. The main problem here is the fact that there's some rather glaring pacing issues here that crop up from time-to-time, as the film takes way too long to get the family out to the cabin with it taking too much time showing them traveling in the car, stopping at the restaurant and antagonizing each other there, it all just really drags this one out and it takes awhile before they actually show up in the cabin. Even then it takes awhile for the true horror to be felt, and it's somewhat stilted pacing is a minor problem. Likewise, there are also some minor issues with the low-budget nature showing up from time-to-time, as the low light levels and somewhat cheap- looking gore do get to this one at times and it's rather obvious. However, these aren't really distracting and it's quite fun regardless.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and children-in- jeopardy.

A Fun Watch..A Weak Finale
ozena660412 August 2020
The comedy in this movie is fantastic. One you can re-watch a few times for sure. Had me laughing all the way through. 4 of the 6 main cast had great chemistry with their overall dialog. Music also stood out to me. Decent effects. Unfortunately the final moments it kinda fell flat for me. So much build up & than weak acting started building up, weather this was due to the direction the actors were given or how it was done for safety. Soft kills once they were prepared & ready to slay. You should still give it watch. GETCHA' PULL!!

Nothing fancy
originaliko18 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is a low budget "zombie" movie you can enjoy if you're really bored and don't have any other option. The story is not that great or original but the younger actor are entertaining enough even if the dialogues are neither great nor very original. There's a little gore but not enough to be disgusted or even gross out.

Not bad!

Warning: Spoilers
A man runs into the night as a woman clad head to toe in body armor gives chase. She has a zombie on a leash that she uses to kill the man. And boom - I'm in as Dead Shack begins.

Jason is meeting up with his friend Colin's family - sister Summer, dad Roger and dad's new girlfriend Lisa (Valerie Tian, Juno) - to stay in a cabin in the woods that they got off Craig's List for way too cheap.

Everyone gets bored quickly and heads out for a hike, where they see the sheer lunacy going on inside the home of the neighbor we saw earlier. She's played by Lauren Holly (Dumb and Dumber) and soon, she's looking to take out the family and/or add them to her family of zombies.

Writer/director Peter Ricq puts together a nice little Sam Raimi tribute here - complete with the she-bitch line getting lifted. There are plenty of practical effects and no shortage of gore. Ricq's band The Humans feature prominently on the soundtrack, too.

It's a quick watch that I enjoyed. It won't change your life, but it's perfect for an entertaining evening. My favorite part was the costume design and poster look - which got me to watch this in the first place!

Not terrible, but tries a bit too hard to be funny
MG_8411 November 2018
Dead Shack is a film which, in some regards, is attempting to piggyback on the success of Stranger Things by offering up a vehicle for three young actors to take the lead in an action-horror, with comedic twists.

To their credit, the kids act well for the most part and do a good job of leading the film through its story. It helps bring a fresh twist to a genre which is littered with the same 20+ "college kid" characters that you would typically find in a horror with this much gore.

The main issue I had with this film was that it felt like the writer-director was trying too hard to emulate the subtle comedy that the young actors of Stranger Things and IT brought; but unlike the latter two, the comedy feels a little forced and unnatural in Dead Shack.

Story-wise, it was also a little lacking. We get a good start, middle and resolution to the story, and one or two surprise moments along the way, but ultimately there's not much flesh on the bones of this Zombie-themed flick. WIth a bit more depth and tension, we might have had a solid and fun horror film.

Worth a watch if you're just looking for some simple (and fairly average) entertainment, but it's no IT or Stranger Things and it's unlikely to live long in the memory.

I did not watch the trailer I just watch the movie so I was surprised. The acting is pretty good along with the special effects and makeup. It was a little slow at the start but I was not bored with this movie. I would definitely recommend you watch this.

2nd worst zombie film ever
mojoguzzi-879-6849810 September 2020
There's an art to writing three dimensional characters. B movies are often peopled with 2D characters. This one has only one dimensional clowns whose less than clever banter would doom a sitcom.

But if you enjoy characters who are obnoxious, rude, stupid and heartless then you might find this entertaining. When "loved ones" die, they shriek for a moment then instantly revert to form, cracking mundane wisecracks, as if the dear departed never existed. There's not a shred of authentic emotion, and not a genuinely humorous line of dialog to compensate. This is clearly the end result of writers who were weaned on sitcoms filled with constant bickering and playful insults but who lacked the chops to pull it off in an entertaining manner.

The action is just as simple-minded. There is zero suspense generated, partly because it's impossible to care about any of the characters and partly because the director doesn't have a clue about pacing or staging a scare.

The cinematography is better than the script deserves and the zombie make-up and blood splatters are well-done, which is probably all that was needed to satisfy those fans who gave this more than three stars.

Don't Bother Your Neighbors
boris_unanimate22 September 2019
I loved how the movie started out, with great cinematography and mysterious ideas. Soon jokes flew in from all sides and it was like Cabin in the Woods, but not as good or engaging. However, this is basically Evil Dead Lite, a kiddie version of a horror movie. It looks good but something's off the entire movie. The actors do a wonderful job. Jokes are all hits. Just relax, turn off your mind and enjoy it for what it is - a very weird horror comedy. Oh, and yeah, the dad steals the show 10/10 times. He's the best bit.

When the blood is black, there's no going back
nogodnomasters24 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Roger (Donavon Stinson) is the patriarch of the amusingly dysfunctional Slade family. A single dad who act as he is still in his adolescence. He was a self-centered girlfriend (Valerie Tian) who loves the bottle more than him. He takes them all on vacation to the cheapest cabin he can find on Craig's List. Jason (Matthew Nelson-Mahood) a dweeb friend of son Colin (Gabriel LaBelle ) joins the group. He is shy and likes daughter Summer (Lizzie Boys).

The cabin they rent is an area of missing people and we know that they are being fed to zombies by Lauren Holly as they are her family. We have no idea how they got that way, only that Lauren wears riot gear and a welders mask when she is around them. Of course, their paths comically cross.

This is a comedy-horror that I loved. The dialogue and characters were a joy to watch. Granted there were a few scenes that could have been done better and to be honest I was not aware of "Go-Fish" foreplay. It is such a thing. My only question was how does one run around at night with a welders' mask and dark lens?

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity. Subtitles on Blu-ray in both English and Spanish.

Fun with Gore
gregsrants18 October 2017
Let's clear the air right now – Dead Shack is neither a B52's hit song nor is it a documentary fictionalizing the death of a famous Los Angeles Lakers center. Or at least it isn't in this iteration. Directed by Peter Ricq, Dead Shack is a horror/comedy about a family who crosses paths with a murderous neighbor who lures others to her home with intention of feeding them to her zombie family. Like I wrote: horror/comedy.

We meet our main characters as they set out on a family vacation. Roger (Donavon Stitson) is the father and adult of the group. Along for the ride is his new girlfriend Lisa (Valerie Tian) kids Summer (Lizzie Boys) and Colin (Gabriel LaBelle) and neighbor Jason (Matthew Nelson-Mahood). Roger is a drinker, a joker and father that tries too hard to bond with his teenage children. He wants to be the cool-adult and throws his sarcastic wit aloud both to amuse himself and others.

His children are very independent. Thanks to Roger's buffoonery they have to be. When they find themselves wandering from the vacation cabin they come across a neighbor worthy of their spying eyes. But when they witness the neighbor drug two strangers and then feed them to some zombie-like characters kept liked rabid pets, the kids grow up fast. They rush back to their father who is both drunk and drugged. Their story of the neighbors cannibalism is met with skepticism and drunken wonder by Roger whose alcoholic courage and hazed attempt to be there for his kids gets him motivated to investigate the claims. It's when they enter the neighbor's house that the film sways from being a full on comedy and lands itself dab smack into the horror/thriller genre.

What ensures next is barrage of equal violence and humor that propels Dead Shack to the height of its crowd pleasing wonderfulness. The kids get all Mad-Maxed up in gear and weaponry created with found parts. Their goal it to save the day and leave with the same amount of family members that began the odyssey (well, maybe not Lisa). Axes and sharp objects swing and stick, blood both red and black are spilled, zombies are both killed and created. As an audience our job is to sit back and enjoy the ride and if you don't look too deep into the shallowness of the story, the ride is a fun one. We enjoyed the first half better than last. Stitson's lines land with precision and the dynamic of the group would be something we would have liked to see more.

There are some great lines in Dead Shack ("When the blood goes black there's no going back"), so when the film shifts to more of a zombie tale, it falters a bit to the finish line.

Our criticism is hardly a reason not to recommend Dead Shack. The crowd assembled at the screening during the Toronto After Dark Film Festival laughed and cheered in all the right spots. So even through the few flaws, it was clearly a crowd pleaser. And not a B52's song.

Shame about the idiot protagonists
Leofwine_draca9 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
DEAD SHACK is another horror B-movie set in the usual cabin in the woods. This one's Canadian and seems to have been made as a cross between TURBO KID (the goofy style, the costumes) and THE EVIL DEAD (the setting, the supernatural beings). It's dark and dingy and saddled with some of the most annoying protagonist characters in a movie, with stupid and obnoxious teenager characters swapping idiotic 'teen' dialogue that's an offense to hear. Thankfully, after a while the plot spurs into motion and there's a lot of gory incident to take your mind off the predictability of it all, although it pales in comparison to the new EVIL DEAD flick as well as films like WITHER, and of course the original classics.

Even the dead will be cringing from this...
paul_haakonsen4 August 2018
I stumbled upon "Dead Shack" by mere chance and random luck. I had no idea that the movie existed prior to picking it up. I was lead to believe that it was a zombie movie. And with that in mind, I needed little other persuasion to watch the movie.

"Dead Shack", while it did have zombies in it, was a wide swing and a miss for me. The storyline was so infantile that it bordered on being downright rubbish. I was not entertained, not even in the least way, and I was on the brink of getting up and finding something else to watch several times throughout the ordeal of watching it. Yet I stuck with "Dead Shack" to the end, after all I hopes it would take a turn for the better, as it was sort of a zombie movie. However, it did not do so.

The characters in the movie were one-dimensional characters that had little or no appeal. And it didn't help much to improve on the overall enjoyment of the movie that the characters stumbled through horrible dialogue and quite often made decisions and took actions that would make you cringe. Whether or not that was intention in order to press in a comical appeal to the movie, I can only guess. But it didn't work in my taste.

What did work in favor of "Dead Shack" was the special effects. Mind you, that this is not a CGI or special effects galore, but whatever special effects that was present was nicely made and worked out quite well on the screen.

"Dead Shack" does not make for a memorable or outstanding addition to the zombie genre, and it is very unlikely that I will return to watch the movie ever again, simply because the storyline was so inadequate.

A Divisive Horror/Comedy
Reviews_of_the_Dead27 December 2018
This was a film I had heard podcasts talking about and it seemed that most people were pretty divided on it. I can see that though when you are talking about horror/comedies, which this film is. I decided to check this out as I am trying to bring together as many horror films released in 2018 as I could. The official synopsis is while staying at a cabin in the woods during the weekend; three teenage kids discover their neighbor is up to something nefarious.

I will admit, I was going to use the synopsis on the Internet Movie Database, but it does spoil some things, so I decided to keep this one a little bit vaguer. I do think that what is happening in this film is a little bit obvious pretty early on, but I came in not completely realizing it until the film played out for me.

It begins with a guy trying to flee from a house that looks a bit rundown. We see someone come out of the house in full riot gear with a welder's helmet on. The person removes it and is it Lauren Holly inside. She kills the person and brings them back into the house.

The film then shifts to a boy as he is leaving his house and walking in the rain. The houses all look the same around him and he is texting with his friend who is making jokes. The teen is Jason (Matthew Nelson-Mahood). He arrives at a rundown house where he is picked up in a mini-van. The driver is Roger (Donavon Stinson). He's the father of Jason's friend Colin (Gabriel LaBelle). Jason has a crush on Colin's sister, Summer (Lizzie Boys), but he is timid and she is strong willed. Also with them is Lisa (Valerie Tian). She doesn't seem as excited.

The group goes to a diner where they run into Holly with two 'bro' type guys. They are mean to Jason where Holly is nicer. It is also during this diner scene that we really see that Roger wants to toughen up Jason, but he is also a comedian.

They get out to the rundown cabin they are staying in. The teens decide to go explore the woods, even though Jason is a little freaked out by it. They stumble upon the house from the beginning and witness Holly drugging the two bros from earlier. She then drags them to a door where we see something come out of it and start to eat them.

Now if you've read any of my reviews when it comes to horror/comedies, I'm not the biggest fan unless it is done right. I heard some people not really caring for the comedy in this film, but I happened to really enjoy it. I thought that Roger was a hilarious combination of dad jokes and jokes that are little bit too inappropriate. He seems like that cool dad and now that his kids are teens, he isn't holding back. He is also interesting in that he is a single father and he is dating. He does try to be too much of a friend to his kids, but this is a film so that really didn't bother me. The comedy from Colin and Summer was also good. They are constantly messing with Jason, but due to him being timid, it hits him harder than it should. I don't mind that, because it makes for some awkward situations that cracked me up.

To the horror aspect of the film, I thought the look of Holly's character when she is in her riot gear was great. It is kind of freaky. It would have been better if we didn't get the reveal that it was her a couple minutes into the film, but it doesn't really hurt it either. I will tell you that this film has zombies in it. This isn't really that big of a spoiler, as this is the first turning point of the film. It doesn't get revealed fully at first, but fans of the genre will know pretty quickly. I thought they looked good and how they moved. It makes for some interesting aspects later in the film.

What I really liked about this one though is that it pulls no punches. I kind of wanted it to be more mean-spirited as it was, but it does have a gut check near the end that I liked. I do think it is paced really well. It doesn't ramp up the horror as much as I would like as it keeps a light hearted tone throughout the whole film. It did keep my attention throughout. I thought the ending was good and it brings something full circle that is brought up earlier in the film.

Acting in the film I kind have already touched on, but I thought it was good. Nelson-Mahood is perfect as the timid hero of the film. He has a good character arch that I think is needed for a film like this. It does well to establish him and show the growth needed. Boys I thought was solid as the strong teen sister. She doesn't take any crap and she is really the strongest which is established in the beginning. LaBelle is funny that he uses humor to cover things up. I thought he played the role well. Holly was good as the neighbor. Her reasoning for what she is doing I thought worked. It isn't a new concept, but one that is explored a little farther than normal. Stinson is hilarious and probably my favorite character. His timing is great. Tian was fine and the rest of the cast round out the film well for what was needed.

The effects for the film I thought were good as well. The look of the zombies and the blood in the film were both solid. It does look to be mostly practical. There was some CGI for a gunshot and for some blood splatter. I'm not the biggest fan of going that route, but they didn't do a lot of it. The film was also shot very well also.

Now with that said, I had fun with this film. It won't be for everyone as the humor can be a little much and the horror isn't ramped up as much as I would have liked. It has an interesting concept that we have seen before, but it does take a different look at it. The film moves a good pace and I thought the ending was fitting for what they were going for. Acting was something that was also good, I had no issues there and the effects were solid aside from some decent CGI. The score of the film really didn't stand out, but it also didn't hurt the film. I would say that overall this film is above average and if you like horror/comedies or zombie films, I would say give this a viewing to see if this is your type of film.
