Some big improvement
TheLittleSongbird25 October 2021
On first watch, expectations were not high for "Some Guy". Despite finding 'The Walking Dead' a brilliant show in its prime, the last three episodes in particular of Season 7 (which was a disappointing season generally) were big disappointments and disliked even more so the previous three episodes of Season 8. Which repeated the same mistakes of the previous season, while amplifying them and making more on the way. Having said all of that, a few of the Season 8 episodes were good.

"Some Guy" turned out to be one of those good episodes. It is lightyears away from being one of the best episodes of 'The Walking Dead', but is it better than the previous three Season 8 outings? Yes, a huge improvement and it is certainly a masterpiece compared to the near-monstrosity that was the previous episode "Monsters". "Some Guy" isn't perfect but it is easily one of the best of Season 8, one of the few good episodes of the season and the best since "Bury Me Here."

A perfect episode it is far from. Some of the action in the middle act is on the chaotic and silly side, with the chase scene being one of the most ridiculous in a while for anything and Carol's big scene could have done with a lot more tension.

Did feel too that some of the dialogue still comes over as too heavy on the talk, though nowhere near as much as with the previous three Season 8 episodes. Ezekiel's especially tends to ramble.

However, a lot is great here. It is the first episode of Season 8 to look good, it has a genuinely atmospheric look and it is one of the few Season 8 episodes where the photography, which tended to be disorganised and self-indulgent, wasn't a problem. Kudos too to the makeup and prosthetics, which are some of the most accomplished and creepiest in a while. The writing is not perfect but it is thought provoking and intriguing. The music is suitably ominous.

It is also the first episode of Season 8 where there is any forward momentum to story progression, so it feels like it's going somewhere rather than feeling like filler. It does have some tension and contains an incredibly movingly powerful ending that really stuck with me and broke my heart. It is the first time where Ezekiel isn't annoying and where it was easy to care for him, his character development was fascinating and insightful as well as really progressed his character. Can't fault the acting, with Khary Payton at his most gut wrenching making the biggest impression. Especially in his breakdown, that is one heart-wrenching breakdown. Melissa McBride also makes much of her material and Whitmer Thomas is chilling, more so than Negan has been in a long time.

On the whole, surprisingly good and a vast improvement over the previous three episodes of the season. 7/10.

My heart and soul died with Shiva tonight
Shiryu0520 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The show is entertaining, the zombies are somewhat dumb unless they converge en massé. That said, I find the show's attitude to animals cold, uncompassionate, a means to an end.

Moments like the death of that beautiful, wild horse (think her name was Buttons) or Shiva being torn apart killed me. Everything beautiful, natural, graceful dies at our hands - zombie or not, it's the truth, it's our reality and we need to change.

GREAT episode.

Warning: Spoilers
This was a damn good episode and anyone who disagrees is lying to themselves. Carol was the best she's been in a long time in this episode. Enjoyed the beginning of the episode, really well done there. Khary Payton was phenomenal in this episode. Ezekiel finally was more than some cartoonish dude with a tiger. I never thought I would cry over the death over the death of a CGI tiger, but I came real close. The Rick and Daryl scene was a bit off, but still enjoyed it. Overall, great episode. Second best of the season.

People aren't fans of character development
jpuretalent2 April 2018
A strong episode about being humbled and character development filled with emotions and action mixed in. People will find the smallest things to nitpick about and it's pretty ridiculous. A lot of people also will give 1 ratings just because they no longer like the direction the show has gone. I've read others reviews not just for shows but movies as well and regret it because it steers you away from watching something you may really enjoy. Let the haters keep hating and make your own decision

Some Guy

Warning: Spoilers
I still remember the disheartening scene where the zombies ate a horse a number of years ago and seeing walkers take down a tiger was just as upsetting. This episode had some noteworthy moments, but this show continues to be senseless violence, empty calories if you will, all season with no end in sight.

Unexpected jewel
phill_ps14 November 2017
Having on mind that the first 3 episodes of this season were a total lackluster, my expectations for this one were really low. However, I was totally wrong. I loved this episode from start to finish.

This episode had much more humanity than the previous 3 episodes, maybe that's the reason why I liked it much more. I totally recommend it.

Very Enjoyable Episode
erikoldland13 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has a very strong start. I really felt for Ezekiel when I saw this beautiful montage of soldiers saying goodbye to their loved ones. It reminded me of an old war film, it made this small war in an apocalyptic world feel like a big war. This was ended with a beautiful speech by the king himself. I think the slaughtering of Ezekiel's people was really well done and the way he was affected by it was very believable. I enjoyed the scenes with the walker hoard chasing him and the random savior. The random savior who held Ezekiel at gunpoint was a great character and was a really good way to enforce Ezekiel's sadness. I loved the Carol scenes but among all these things I loved, I have some dislikes. The Rick and Daryl car chase scene wasn't amazing but it wasn't bad enough to ruin the episode fortunately. Carol vs the Saviours outside wasn't very good either but I enjoyed the conflict of should I save my friends or get the guns. In the end this was a good episode with a couple mistakes. All and all Ezekiel is becoming a way more relatable character and is now a lot more inserting to watch.

good start, nonsense, good end
MomentIMDB6 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
After a forced cliffhanger, the episode opens before the war in the kingdom. I liked the ezekiel approach. the speech was good but some parts were mane. I liked the contrast when the people of the kingdom embrace Ezekiel and then Ezekiel is surrounded by the dead, something witty and something missing. I liked the reaction of Ezekiel to the loss of its people. Carol Badass returns killing the rescuers from the roof. Here begins the bad. Ezekiel is caught by one of the saviors. This scene is ridiculous, there was no need for a savior to make Ezekiel suffer, he felt guilty for the losses. and also made feel that the walkers are not scary, since literally they are two steps away and do not even pay attention to them. The worst of the episode was when Carol takes shelter behind a car and rescuers shoot her car for five minutes. a ridiculous scene, with the aim of lengthening the scene. instead of everyone shooting at the car, some go on the one hand while the others keep shooting. They don't even try. Jerry arrives and kills the savior who had Ezekiel. I liked. Another ridiculous scene, Jerry tries to break a lock with his ax, why? instead of breaking the lock, I broke the fence. After more nonsense, we see Carol and Ezekiel in a flashback talking. I liked it and it seemed interesting. I liked Rick and Daryl with the Saviors,

Well that was heart breaking (Spoilers)
dorianzagorski13 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers below!!!

Well this episode was by far the best one this season. Good action with not much pointless shooting like before. Shivas death really broke my heart like I did not think I would cry if she died but damn I did. Also it was sad to see the king give up slowly I hope he doesn't close himself up inside. The way he screamed at Jerry telling him he's not a king was absolutely heartbreaking. This episode was like the real the walking dead we love. So guys stop hating on the show all the time and watch something else if you have a problem with the show. Also one more thing Carol is a BadAss ha ha I love her!!! R.I.P Shiva. Ohh and I had a heart attack whenever a walker got close to Jerry I really don't want him to die.

So tired of the haters. Go away.
julieeder27 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First off, to the haters who have been saying things like "how is the show still on" and "it's because of the people giving these episodes good reviews that the show is still on"... do you not want the show to be on? Yes, maybe this season is a little weaker than the last few, but just stop with the negativity. Let us real fans just try and enjoy the show that we've loved for 7 seasons. If you don't like it, DON'T WATCH IT ANYMORE. And if you didn't feel sad over Shiva's death, then you've obviously have become numb to caring about these characters, so just stop watching. Shiva saved Ezekiel, Carol and Jerry (3 characters we all enjoy). And to watch her get eaten by walkers was devastating. Shiva is the first real animal character on the show, besides a few horses, that we've grown to love. There are several human characters that I'd like to see killed off (annoying Rosita, Gregory, Eugene). This episode had a lot of great kills (not Shiva), action and who doesn't love watching Daryl and Rick team up and regulate? Come on. Haters go away.

How can anyone defend this?
gerardchalaux5 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Carol and her usual lucky strike, somehow always getting away with any situation; a thousand bullets fired on her, five dudes with automatic weapons, and not a single scratch. Try to at least make it somehow believable ffs, it's ridiculous.

Then goes the tiger and literally kills itself just because. For the love of god, it's a huge tiger, one of the best predators of nature, and can't move when surrounded by a handful of slow weak zombies? Give me a break.

Seriously, pathetic.

Why do I need to do this
davidbrunhoefer14 November 2017
Why is it that ever since the deaths of Abraham and Glenn, it seems like every episode after just divides people more? This division is hypocritical in that in Season 7 people wanted action and war instead of Rick being Negan's lapdog, yet when that finally happens with All Out War, you suddenly say its not what you want and instead you want the same drama you wanted in the early seasons. If you want that drama go watch Young and the Restless. Now in regards to this episode, I do think that it was flawed. You can't tell me that ALL THOSE WALKERS appeared to not make any progress on Ezekiel. That alone drops it down to an 8 at best, but i'm going to make it a 7, because I do think it was a decent episode that showed some very powerful moments that were only set back by questionable scenes.

And to the people that don't like this show and want it to end, STOP WATCHING THEN!!!😡😡

People are way too hard on this show.
ben-grunert112 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Before you say this review didn't help you because it's a 10/10, hear me out. Ever since people became angered over the season 6 finale cliffhanger and the excess violence of the season 7 premiere, they haven't been able to give this show a chance again. Just because they made some bold decisions in recent seasons doesn't mean they need to be criticized for making great content in the current season. I see that people have already given this episode so many subpar reviews before even finishing it as it was already rated only 7.7 stars before the episode ended. A thousand bucks says this episode tonight would get at least a 9 star rating if it was released in season 6 or before. Anyways, this episode had it all. There was phenomenal drama, tons of badass action sequences, and lots of tragedy as well. They even brought back the opening flashback sequences they used to use perfectly in the very early seasons. To avoid spoiling the whole entire thing, I won't give a full out synopsis of absolutely all that takes place but I'll point out some of the best examples of why this was one of the best episodes we've had in a long time. For one thing, the action sequences are phenomenal. They aren't over the top and overly excessive either. They are perfectly scattered throughout (examples of action: Jerry fighting off zombies like a badass with his axe, Carol gunning down saviors to save the ammo, Rick and Daryl saving the ammo from the fleeting Savior truck). The episode also included a lot of tragedy. For one thing, almost everyone from Ezekiel's crew dying basically leaves several families without their loved ones back at the Kingdom. Also, Khari Payton does an amazing job displaying realistically agonized and terrified reactions to the deaths of all of his soldiers. He later is saved from a group of several walkers by Shiva who is then brutally killed, which is a tearjerking but perfect finish to her character as she saved Ezekiel's life just as he had saved hers at the start of the apocalypse when he was a zookeeper. Overall, the episode jolts us from the hopeful vibe emitted from the first three episodes of the season and reminds us that Negan and the saviors are still a humongous threat. This really shakes things up and personally has me a lot more excited and uncertain of what to expect in the near future. Expect more action and tragedy in ensuing episodes. And to those who are mindlessly giving fantastic episodes like this bad ratings before they are even finished, please stop. Give this show a chance again.

I'm a big fan of the show , but please end it before it officially dies.
CesarSoze13 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I used to think that this show is the best of all time back at season 3 and 4 but oh man what do I think now. Please end the show , I'm watching it and i'll keep watching it but i'm hurting, the writing is so bad , everything feels so forced, action scenes are badly directed, everything just looks bad. One of the main things that annoyed me in this episode is when it was 4 or 5 people from the saviors against Carol , they kept shooting non-stop with Carol right there hanging out behind the car, even the three stooges can be smarter.

I didn't feel sorry for Shiva's death because it was so forced and stupid. I know comic book readers will say that's what happened in the comics but here's is my reasoning for that. The walking dead producers and writers screwed up when they started the show being realistic and far from the comics , and planted that idea , now they're going closer to the comics forgetting that they started with a realistic world making things like Shiva's death look so stupid and forced.

  • Sidenote : The fanboys who keep giving these episodes 10/10 just because it's The walking dead , are the reason this show is still on, please stop being so ignorant , I love the show and i'm not a hater but you have to stop. I think one of them is "dkdanielkim" , he wrote a review for this episode, check out his profile , all his ratings for FTWD and TWD episodes are 10/10 and GOT on the other hand is 1/10. I know it's rude and not professional but I just had to call him out.

Very good Episode
nadimmouawad13 November 2017
This is the walking dead we all know about. You guys should stop it with the bad ratings. This episode in particular shows that the series is still a pretty good one. I loved the cut back scenes. well directed. Let's hope that the upcoming episodes will be at the same level of this one. Keep on watching and don't rate just because you want to rate. It takes a lot of work to create these 'worst action scenes'. Rate in professionaly.

The Car Chase and The Kingdom
claudio_carvalho13 November 2017
Once upon a time a magnificent series of zombies (walkers) called "The Walking Dead" developed by Frank Darabont with great characters and lots of walkers. Darabont left the show but the series kept the excellent level. However, after Glenn's death, the show was not so good but fans believed it would improve somehow in the next season.

Unfortunately Season 8 is the worst could happen to "The Walking Dead". "Some Guy" is not a totally bad episode; indeed it is the best so far of this awful eighth season. However there is not the dynamics of the other seasons and the characters are neglected or forgotten or poorly developed. The fans do not miss anybody that died from The Kingdom and do not even know their names. Meanwhile, what happened to Gabriel? Or Negan? The subplots are totally disconnected and the flashbacks are tiresome. Car chase does not match with a post apocalypse world of zombies. Let's hope that the next episode improves this season and The Saviors are finally defeated saving the show. My vote is seven.

This was the best episode so far in my opinion
qualuslife13 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Season 7 was a drag with only a few really good episodes & season 8 seems to be heading the same way. Apart from maybe the first one, the last episodes bored me out of my mind with useless shooting, speeches and weird time-lines and I understood the bad ratings completely.

This episode was for me one of those good ones. It brought back lots of walker action and sad (though not very unexpected) deaths. Some dialogue was still a bit boring but overall it had great pace and story. It deserves a higher rating.

The car chase scene ruined everything
mattvissicchio13 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This episode started and ended off strong, but in between it was painfully bad. This episode had the worst directed action scenes I have ever seen in my life. It's hard to believe that a show that was so thrilling and got my heart racing every episode, to me face palming every time a bad guy misses the clearest shot. The episode had it's moments of gratuity and character development, but the car chase scene was just laughable. It was like watching an action scene from the 60s. Rick and Daryl chase after a car with two saviors in it and one savior has a machine gun pointed at them at maybe 20 meters away. The savior takes about 60 shots at them and hit about 2. Rick was in a car, and the savior misses... By this point I was hysterical in laughter. And Rick pulls up next to the savior, and for some reason he's unarmed??? Rick jumps in the car and the savior tries to pull out a gun, WHEN RICK IS ALREADY IN THE CAR. He had a solid 7 seconds to pull out this gun and take out Rick and end the war. This scene was so bad I couldn't live with myself if I gave this episode higher than a 1. Seriously, so bad and so disappointed as usual.

Action packed episode.
ohmap-977-66481012 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I don't give out points for easily, but this episode deserves a ten in my opinion. The acting and action were superb, and this is the highest ranking I have given any episode so far.

King Ezekiel awoke from the battle last week to see all his men were dead and bodies and limbs strewn about like a meat market. In his grief, some of the bodies started to awaken to become zombies and thus attack him. The element of fear and need to get out of there became very clear to the king, except he had little ammo and his leg was injured. It was at that point the unexpected happened: one of Negan's men took him hostage and was going to return him to the sanctuary.

The next few scenes saw the king stripped of his rank so to speak by Negan's toad who mocked him and told he was no king, but just some guy. What is sad is that the king listened to him. The man and the king arrived at a gate they could not get through, it is at that point the king put up a gallant fight to overtake Negan's thug, but failed.

Enter Jerry just in the nick of time with a large ax and chops Negan's thug in half, but they were still stuck at the gate and could not get through and had an oncoming zombie herd. Jerry called King Ezekiel your majesty, but the king told Jerry he did not need to call him king, but Jerry said: yes...I do!

Carol was at the same time having her own action with Negan's other forces trying to get a cache of weapons to use. Carol got through this unscathed, but only because of the stupidity of Negan's men. They shot into the car she hid behind and not below the car so some of the bullets could get through. This was completely action packed and the action was believable and good.

She happen to see Ezekiel and Jerry at the gate battling the zombies as she was fighting Negan's men. In essence, she made a choice to save her friends versus trying to stop Negan's men with the cache of weapons. Good for Carol!

To start summing up: Rick and Daryl stopped the men who got away with the cache of weapons, and the king, Carol, and Jerry got away with the zombie herd hot on their trail, but tragedy struck King Ezekiel's dear friend. His tiger died so that the king, Carol, and Jerry might get away. The king's anguish was inconsolable. The last scene sees the king walking dejectedly into his home compound without their brothers, fathers, sisters, and mothers. Jerry and Carol followed closely behind.

We may see the king renounce his kingship, but that would be sad. He told Jerry he was no king (as Negan's man told him), but he helped keep the people alive and gave them hope. I hope this is not the end of King Ezekiel. Jerry deserves to be a knight. If they continue the kingdom, then they may as well have all the pageantry.

The action, drama, and pathos was intense. I gladly give this episode a 10.

That death hit me
meltingmel28 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The death of Shiva hit me 1000 times harder than any FTWD death. This was up there with Glenn for me.

A great episode. Great acting. Great action. But the ending... just so devastatingly sad for me. We don't deserve animals. If there is a God, animals are the greatest gift we have ever been given. A true heroic ending for the beautiful tiger.

Carol was epic as usual. I love the evolution of her character. She's such a little bad***. I love how in her conversation with Ezekiel they had similar personalities before the apocalypse. I can see they are trying to have her take Michonnes place as Ezekiel's lover. Sigh. Not sure how I feel about it - but they do have good chemistry.

Another One Week Of Wait & We Get This
adarshbohra6913 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
How many weeks can you watch Ricks crew go around and kill hundreds or the bad guys and never get hit? It Was One Of The Worst episode I Ever Watched, it's like the writers gave no one common sense in this episode... How does a group invade a compound and not check the buildings and stand out in an open field... How is Carol the only one to go check the building... And why didn't Carol shoot the guys as all five were loading the Browning in the Humvee, let alone shoot the last two as the we're behind the Humvee, there's a Huge gap under the Humvee, shoot them in the Back. Seriously worst episode by far and I hope they don't let this writer do another.. Season seven was pretty poor but this season is just awful. It seems like the writers are getting lazy with their stories Soft focus shots, flashbacks, gun battles where no one actually hits a bad guy stood in the open, bad acting. the action is so poorly filmed now, it just consists of dozens of people ducking in and out of cover with seemingly infinite ammo. I Had To Purge Watch This Episode By Fast Forwarding,I Have Watched At least 5000 Episodes Of So Many TV Shows,It Was The First Time I Did This. R.I.P The walking dead 2010 - 2016
