Could have been better
vladmods30 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Not a weak episode, rather an average one. There were a couple of good ideas held back by weak fighting.

Most egregious was the attack on that Saviour unit and the prolonged bullet exchange seemed to go on forever, as some kind of not very credible computer game stalemate. A lot of bullets were flying, most of the time without any real damage being done to people, cars or barricades.

Most disappointing was the lack of zombie action. The recently deceased were rarely shown to transform into zombies. It can take a while for the zombification to occur, we know that from the ending of season 1, but it really was a missed opportunity.

I wish there were more zombies in action. After all, this is the Zombie Apocalypse. The Walking Dead.

Not the best episode but not the worse either.

Warning: Spoilers
I agree with most people the fighting is long and pointless no body cares about 90% of the characters no more, only the original characters from seasons 1 and 2. Do I care for the rest? well there characters haven't really been bothered to be developed so who cares if Aron, Jesus or even the king die in a gun fight. When Eric gets hit did anyone care? Probably not. There was a good point however when Rick kills the father protecting his baby girl and becomes the biggest monster in the episode. That seen broke my heart to be honest probably because I have a 13 month old daughter.

They are doing many things right, but people are still complaining
konstantinlange30 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I usually don't write any reviews on IMDb but after reading many critics about TWD I just had to this time. The ratings of the show are getting ridiculously low since the beginning of last season. I do understand why people are not happy about the way the show is going at the moment, but voting every single episode with one star is just crazy. Season 7 was, to be honest, the weakest season of the whole series, but the first episodes of Season 8 looked very promising. While nothing really happened in the last season, we have seen two action packed and entertaining episodes, but people are still complaining- Why? In earlier seasons we had many slow paced and also boring episode but their rating is still 8 stars and more, because people were giving a "normal" rating of 4-5 stars for bad episodes and not 1-star. To cut a long story short, TWD is still entertaining and ratings on IMDb are not necessarily an indicator for the quality of the show...

For this episode: I really enjoyed it. Covering almost all of the main cast, we follow 3 different attacks on Savior outposts. After a dull Season 7 it feels good to have the action back at TWD! I'll rate this an 8 because not all things were good but I'm happy that the show is going uphill again and I can't wait for the next episode which is by the way looking pretty cool

(There may be some mistakes, because I'm not a native English speaker)

Awesome

Why are people hating this so much? It is 40 minutes of action. It is more action than the show ever had. I love the first two episodes of season 8

Really average episode
dagurlh30 October 2017
I truly don't know why this episode got all this hate.

Honestly, it's a good episode. especially compared to the last season. Sure it's not one of the best episodes of the walking dead. But really this episode is just an average TWD episode.

Normally I don't post a review unless its something truly amazing or horrible

But this is just a normal episode.

I think most people who gave this episode bad reviews are just hating on it because they are mad about the show as a whole going down last season in quality but this episode kind of stood out from the few previous ones and could be a start back to its former glory

And When people see a couple of bad episodes in a row they just expect the next one to be bad too. So they only see the bad parts in an episode when it's released.

And I've seen reviews saying " Please fire the writers " and " these writers are terrible and stupid "

But end result. Just an average TWD episode if you compare it to any episode before season 7. but still the best episode since S7E01

The Damned

Warning: Spoilers
I watch plenty of action shows. You will never hear me clamor for less action and violence on the telly, but this episode was too much considering last week was the same thing too.

This is supposed to be a show about zombies, a show about rediscovering life after the apocalypse, not just people shooting at each other.

Not horrible, just sort of pointless.

Who knew All Out War could be so dull?
TheDonaldofDoom30 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I gave Season 8 a chance last week as I had hoped (in vain, as it turns out) that more stuff of significance would happen in future episodes. But that wasn't true of this one. It was mainly a load of mindless action with no actual plot development (except for the ending), and not particularly well executed action at that. It's funny, because we waited so long for all out war and now it's actually here it's not even fun to watch. Most of the episode's runtime is taken up by shooting, shooting, and more shooting. It's not like there's any tension because there's been so little character development recently that it's hard to care about most of the characters anyway. And TWD has played us so many times before that when Morgan was shot and "died", I rolled my eyes. I didn't think for one moment that he was actually dead. And sure enough, a few minutes later he got up and carried on fighting. And when a Walker tore the throat out of a character I can't even remember the name of, why should I care? We didn't even know anything about her.

This episode's timeline is also confusing for no good reason. When is the cold open set? It shows Gabriel fighting even though last time we saw him he was stuck in a trailer with Negan. Speaking of Gabriel, why didn't we see him and Negan escape from the trailer at all in this episode? What sense does that make? Who cares?

The episode tries to fit in some moral questions by having Tara and Jesus squabble over whether to kill a Savior or let him live, but this is a clichéd scenario that we've seen countless times before, going over moral issues that have already been explored since the first season (if we kill bad people, does that make us bad people as well? Sigh).

And then there's Ezekiel's cringeworthy script, which sounds about 500 years out of place. It's hilarious that the other characters don't seem to find anything strange about the way he speaks, and that he even speaks like this in the battlefield.

The cliffhanger. Oh, what an awful way to execute a cliffhanger. It's so contrived. Rick, the LEADER, wondering around on his own is basically him asking to be captured. This cliffhanger only exists because the useless writers are desperately trying to find a way to make people watch the next episode.

Awful episode. How anyone could enjoy this rubbish is beyond me.

All Out War

Warning: Spoilers
While i was not a big fan of the season 8 premiere, i think this episode totally makes up for what was missing in the last. Lots of action packed moments throughout this episode, definitely more side characters like Tara, And Jesus make this episode a classic one. Oh and one more thing, Morales Is Alive.

not the worst, not the best
tallydun-6952230 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
i think a lot of people have been frankly over exaggerating how bad these first 2 episodes are. if you waited this long for it to come back, maybe stop bashing it and appreciate what good aspects there are. (negan voice) Jesus.

that being said, everybody who's making an actual attempt to critique the episode is saying the same thing: its messy, and nobody knows whats happening. there's Aaron and Eric fighting at the sanctuary. Tara and Jesus at the one outpost. Morgan at another. kingdom people in the forest. rick and Daryl at yet another outpost. i'm really, really glad the writers are trying to not do the bottle episodes anymore, but. jeez. not that much.

PROS: -i agree that walking dead's pacing has never been the best, but so far this season it's been pretty good. the transition from e1 to this one was pretty smooth, in my opinion - the viewer knows what's going on

-‎people aren't giving some scenes credit where they're do. mainly the one with Gracie. it's a really serious moral dilemma: does rick go back to fight and completely disregard the baby, or does he follow his moral code and save the baby, knowing that he would want someone to do the same for Judith? not to mention rick likely just killed the baby's father and last remaining parent. oh snap!

-‎Morgan was just really good in this episode. from him being all bad-ass, to the flashback scenes that fit in quite well.

-‎i don't know what's gonna happen with Tara and Jesus's kidnapped saviors but i'm really interested. very non-cliché.

CONS: -‎the music before the scene where Morgan gets shot is just. wack. i don't know if anyone else was paying attention to it, but it made me not take the scene seriously. :/

-the moral dilemma w Tara and Jesus was also cool to see, but maybe they drew out that scene a little too much. just saying.

-‎a lot of the scenes with carol and Ezekiel could've been cut. i guess they were trying to show some development in their relationship, but Ezekiel preaching in his ye old speech for that long was not needed

the thing with Morales could be really crappy or pretty good. i don't know how to feel about it at all.

finally, people saying this episode was boring: this was arguably the most action-filled episodes of walking dead ever, so i guess we weren't watching the same show.

Getting Worse Every Week
claudio_carvalho30 October 2017
It is impressive what the present writers are doing with "The Walking Dead", destroying the magnificent series originally written by the excellent Frank Darabont. They are capable to turn a full of action episode into something so stupid and boring that is difficult to understand who is who in the non-stop shootings and why so many raids at the same time. Sometime ago, ammunition was a problem to Rick and his group and they asked Eugene to try to make ammunition to supply their arsenal. But now the shootings waste so many shots that is amazing the reference of being short of ammunition. Jesus is a nice character, but his attitude is so stupid that it is hard to understand how Morgan, Tara and the other dwellers from Alexandria, Hilltop and the Kingdom could accept to leave Saviors alive after all they did. My vote is four.

I Don't Die
ThomasDrufke29 October 2017
After a relatively fast episode last week, we got an even faster paced episode this week. Literally a non-stop week of action as Rick & the gang attempted to take down another outpost of The Saviors.

After taking most of the beating last season, our group took the initiative and went after the Saviors before it was the other way around. I have to admit, it wasn't the easiest to watch the gang brutally plow through dozens upon dozens of living people like that. I think it's too optimistic to think that they can just hold everyone captive and not have some casualties. But at the same time, I'm glad we saw Rick look at himself in the mirror and re-think things a bit. Seeing Morales definitely brought back some thoughts about how the past used to be. So not only is the "familiar face" he runs into Morales, but it's also his own face in that mirror. To me, that was an extremely powerful moment. It's those moments that always win me over.

If there are going to be big deaths this year, I think it's smart to bet on Morgan. This whole "I can't Die" storyline is bound to end up with a devastating end to the great run of Morgan on this show. However, it's interesting that he's done a complete 180 from where he was at this point last year. In fact, it was interesting just to see the idea of life and death become so prominent in tonight's episode. I can only assume that this is a theme that will run through the rest of the season.

So while there was a ton of action, not a lot of things happened of significance. It felt very much like the first part of a two-parter, and maybe this whole season will have that feeling. As we draw closer and closer to our group taking down Negan, which is absolutely inevitable.

Another disappointment.
MomentIMDB26 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The episode is acceptable, but with the material they have, this is ridiculously disappointing and vague writing. Good points: I liked Rick's approach, I liked the fight he had with El Salvador quite well and he was well choreographed and it was best to see Rick reacting to killing the father of a baby trying to take care of her. Morgan Badass loved it. the return of morals was interesting and gave a lot of intrigue. shiva in action !!! bad points: the direction, although it was regular and in some points was interesting, in several action scenes it becomes confusing and boring. the "battle" of the Alexandrians with cars with sheet metal was quite boring and meaningless, they could do something interesting, but the fight consisted of two sides shooting at five meters for several minutes. Jesus had an incoherent and out of place attitude, since he never showed concern for the saviors, but for the benefit of the plot, Jesus is now a moralist. The beginning and the end with that close-up of the characters was wasted time and filling.

A fast paced nothingness.
davibentim30 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Alright, at least this episode wasn't completely full of meaningless pointless dialog (more like monologues).

But here's what bothers me about it. It starts with a intense music tone with intense shots of the protagonists and as usual, while TWD think this is innovative, it was a flash of the end of the episode. They may think this is something cool but if you do that pretty much 1 out of 5 episodes, it gets old.

Anyway, it jumps to a scene of some saviors at an unexplained and unidentified location cleaning some weapons outside. After a bit, an attack unveils and Rick's people show up shooting and made me wonder how much are those extras getting paid for because dear god, they are so bad. Their acting of being shot to death reminds of that scene in "A Bug's Life" when the kids are putting on a play and go like "I died". Except the kids acted better.

Then they engage in this huge fire fight where people are relentlessly shooting each other from 10-15 yards out and still can't hit crap. It bothers me so deeply how unrealistic it is. You unload a 30 clip magazine on a target 15 yards away and if you can't even hit a little bit, you're either blind or just plain retarded. Anyone who's ever been to something like even paintball knows that if you are behind cover and your enemy knows you're there, the second you stick your face out, you're getting blown out.

But enough of that scene. It was so poorly made that I don't want to remember it.

Then we go to the base with those giant antennas. Morgan uses "I don't die" cheat code, turns on God Mode and Infinite Ammo and just kills everyone he sees while casually walking down the hallway. Then after a pointless scene about this guy pretending to be nice completely blows his cover for no reason and attacks Jesus. Then we go back to the hallway where we see this dude firing an M1 carbine and it's fully automatic for some unknown reason.

And then we go to Rick's scene where he kills this dude and suddenly remembers that everyone he kills is an actual human being with friends, family, etc.

Now okay, at least it was a fast paced episode, packed with action. But to what purpose? To herd a horde of zombies into Negan's house? To cripple his supplies? To take away some outposts and gain territory? Not clear. It's only presumable that that is the plan.

But even being a fast paced episode, I can't help but wonder if AMC has cut the budget for the show dramatically since they can't even use real special effects anymore. It's been a couple of seasons since the last time anyone actually fire a gun with a blank. It's all CGI. It's all poorly written and poorly planned. It just looks like it was rushed. A show who has seen an exponential growth of viewers should have an exponential growth of resources but it's just gone downhill.

I'll give it a 4 because at least I was entertained. I couldn't let the poor quality of it's direction and production slip past my senses but I can at least say I wasn't utterly bored.

That didn't go too well
ericstevenson29 October 2017
Well, my last review was my most hated ever, but I'm going to keep on making reviews because I love this show and want to get my thoughts out. Anyway, what makes this episode so interesting is that it doesn't focus on a single character or even the same group of characters. This is what makes this show so great is that we get a great cast of unique characters that all contribute to the story well. It was interesting to see some fight walkers and others fight living people. They actually overlap as one scene features the formerly living people transform into walkers. The action's as good as ever.

Rick and Daryl are the most noteworthy but we get lots of great bits too. There's Carol and Ezekiel in one group and Tara and Jesus in another. They hold a guy hostage who looks a lot more like Jesus. We get a great opening as we see shots of the main characters' faces. That's also what we end on. It doesn't use the same angles however which shows how diverse the storytelling is. Most of the conflict is still caused by the humans which is why it's great to see how an apocalypse affects the still normal people. I did miss Negan though. ***1/2

Here's the good, here's the bad
ssemmler1631 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This episode and last weeks episode have been a nice change of pace from the events in season 7. This episode wasn't great, but definitely wasn't bad. All of the scenes with Morgan in this episode were very well done. The way they shot his scenes felt like you were sneaking around the compound with him. Showing him breeze through the compound taking out people without even thinking I thought was the best part of this episode. Also the editing of Ricks speech from season 6 mixed in with Morgan outside struggling with his internal emotions I thought was very well done. The scenes with Rick and Darryl looking for the weapons in this episode I thought were also very well done. These scenes were intense and I thought they really captured Ricks emotions in a couple of key moments. This episode suffers in a few places though. Mainly I feel it suffers in the scenes with Tara and Jesus. The conflict between their two differing opinions was drawn out a bit too much. The dialogue I felt became very stiff and I ended up just not caring. Also what is up with this line "You know how hard it is to p*ss yourself on purpose? It's like your d*ck knows your wearing pants." What were the writers thinking when they wrote that and what were the editors thinking when they decided to include that in the final cut? I understand he was faking being scared. I don't need a stupid line like that to explain it. That totally threw me off for the rest of that conversation. Another issue I have with this episode is the editing at the beginning and end of the episode. The slow motion fading. I really enjoy the shots and even that editing technique, but nowhere else in the episode do we see editing that slow. It's all fast paced or long shots to build tension. As a result, unfortunately, these shots feel out of place. The pacing shifts completely for the rest of the episode until it is shown again at the end. My last issue is with the last scene where Eric gets shot. If they're are not going to kill him off then this isn't so much of an issue. If they are though, honestly, I think they could've made his death much more emotional if they had just killed him quickly right then and there. Eric has not been in a whole lot of the show so far and I've grown to care much more about Aaron than Eric. If they are killing him off, which I'm guessing they are, I think showing Aaron watching him die quickly and having him rush over to him would've been a lot more meaningful. We could see the emotion on Aaron's face and his sadness and then maybe those slow motion shots would feel more in place. I'm guessing they are going to have him have a last conversation with him in the next episode which is fine, but I think it would be better if Eric had a quick death and we could see the impact that has on Aaron. This episode is not terrible, it's pretty intense, but it definitely needed some more work specifically on the writing and editing.

Too Much Appeal to the Surreal
jabandrade30 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
TWD's unconditional fans, those who accept anything after the introduction, get furious with the negative reviews. But it is that passion compromises their ability to evaluate. This series started very well, it is good to say, and kept the interest up to season 6. But the truth is that it is losing breath and sense week after week. The 7th season has already suffered the boredom problem in most episodes . Now it faces the challenge of strong creative decline. And that became very clear in these first 2 episodes of Season 8. The first one even had a certain logic, but in the second they spent more than half an hour in a shootout with no purpose and the rest of the time on weak situations, forced by the script to push the hook for the next episode. It is unbelievable the emptiness of ideas and how shallow some characters are. When the writer wastes a handful of time with shots, it's because he had no better idea. And one more proof of this is the resurrection of a character without much importance disappeared 7 years ago, in position to threaten a near perfect plan of one of the leaders. Many asked: who the hell is this guy? From where I come we call this too much appeal to the surreal. If in the last season lacked action, now they come with uncontrolled action overuse meaningless. Can't they find a middle ground? Bring Frank Darabont back.

Amazing Episode
Dunnyy30 October 2017
This episode was absolutely stunning. Each episode this season has been better than the last, and Episode 3 seems to continue this trend. Season 8 looks set to be the best season of TWD, and maybe even the best season of any TV show ever. Someone said that Gabriel was fighting in this episode. No son, that was Scott. Stop being racist, not all black people look the same.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm tired of seeing this negative reviews about everything there is in the new episodes of season 8, last season people complained about the pace, now they get 2 ABOVE Average episodes with actually great action and good dialogue and they still complain, make your own mind people... I know the walking dead at this moment isn't the phenomenal show we all fell in love with in season 1/2, and that's due to the fact of Frank Darabont getting fired from the show, BUT THERE'S NO WAY you can say the show is pure sh*t, IT'S STILL WAY WAY ABOVE Average and one of the best TV show's there is.

  • Great actions set pieces.

  • Good dialogue.

  • Great Morgan/Rick/Daryl scenes.

  • Morales reveal was awesome with great dialogue and tension.

  • 8.7/10

Mindless action is well.........mindless
larosat-3282130 October 2017
Seeing useless characters fire thousands of rounds of ammo is not exciting. I couldn't even tell who was who until a familiar character would pop up on one side. Boring beyond belief. Ezekiel's pompous speak is like nails on a chalkboard and incredibly stupid. No suspense, zero interesting interaction. Terrible writing and dull, worthless characters have destroyed this show. Will stop watching soon as many people are doing. No doubt fed up with the deplorable storytelling!! Something has to change soon or they're going to continue to lose viewers in droves. It's just not working. Negan still remains one of the silliest, weakest looking villains in the history of television. I'll last till the mid season and probably check out as anybody with taste will most likely also do.

More accuracy is needed
benyaminshakeri-048566 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was almost like the previous episode at a level. Action lot and enjoyable! What I did not see at all in the previous season. This episode had a better performance than previous episode in action sequences. Directed and well-developed, we have made us look beautiful and delicious sequences. But I have to say that again, some mistakes and weak and ridiculous scenes caused this episode could not be perfect. Conversation sequence between Bet and Carol in the forest had severely poor and very ridiculous dialogues ((I say yes and no, say good and yes, and answer both questions yes)) Well, this is a very weak and ridiculous dialogue. And it's really unfortunate. Another defect is that in the confrontation sequence of Christ and Tara, with one of the Negi, their group was shooting in the hallway. But no voices of shooting bullets to our ears; While Christ and Tara were near them !! In general, it was good and pleasure, but it should be more accurate in a series of sectors. I give this episode 8 points.

Walking Dead Back on Track?
alex-dhaliwal199729 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Despite my hatred for splitting the group up, as the writers have done ad nauseam, I got to give credit to the writer of this episode for giving some life back to the show. Normally, the writers do this for the purpose of stalling the plot, which got annoying after season 6; however, I was genuinely surprised on how much was done in 42 minutes of show. Whether it be Morgan going on a killing spree, or Rick meeting an old friend (aka Morales), I felt that the episode had a nice mix of slower moments, particularly with Carol and Ezekiel, to more action-packed sequences, as with Aaron and Morgan. I can only hope that this is a sign of even greater things to come moving forward - though I wonder, how did Rick and the gang get so much ammunition? No matter.. I am happy to see this one-up - no ten-up the season premiere, and I am hoping the writers take the misfires of season 6 and 7 as a lesson that their beloved fans want quality over quality, and that our loyalty to the show cannot be bought with mediocrity. In short, this was definitely a step in the right direction, and I hope (begging) that Gimple and his associates don't screw it up in the end. Overall, I give it a 9/10, which has become increasingly rare since the end of season 5.

Boring
dclarke-2897931 October 2017
This show was boring, confused, and very uninteresting. Don't get me wrong - i'm a fan. But come on. This was probably the worst show of the entire series. I really hope it picks up in the rest of this series. It starts with very dull close-ups of the key players, and then ends that way. In between, who's fighting whom? Why are some of the gang walking around in the bush? The script is really stretching this out and, guys, you are losing the interest of the fans. Next week's show will, I hope, move the story ahead.

Just a filler episode!
ohmap-977-6648104 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I am not saying filler is bad, but nothing happened that I would consider remarkable. I honestly don't know where this war is going, but after a few weeks of both sides emptying thousands of rounds of ammunition and not hitting a thing, it makes me wonder about their shooting ability.

One good guy did meet his Waterloo: Eric. The Walking Dead did do Eric justice in his swan song. Last I saw, he died in the arms of the one who loved him most. I enjoyed his supporting role character. The ones who generally have an affable disposition get killed off early. I enjoyed some of the old actors in Alexandria. I liked Diana and Jesse and wished they had not been killed. Jesse was a better match for Rick than Michone because Michone is an Amazon warrior type. Sometimes I wondered if Rick should not take orders from her. She is one of the few in the cast that make sense to me.

Bottom line...this episode was a continuation of last week's episode. Those that give it a 10 or a 1 are being silly, it was OK but nothing happened.
