Don't waste your time
Yes i did give this movie a 4/10...to be far the acting of the two main characters in the basement was quite good...and the gory scenes were pretty good too.

However!

That's it! it was a drawn out waste of time and pretty stupid story line.

Don't waste your time on this movie, there are better ways to spend your time and better movies.

An interesting take on serial killers...
BandSAboutMovies14 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The Gemini, a deranged serial killer, has been torturing and killing people in the basement of his San Fernando Valley home. But once he meets famous musician Craig Owen and his girlfriend Kelly, he may have met his match.

The Gemini (Jackson Davis) has already claimed seven victims, maiming them and decapitating them with a blowtorch. He's a master of psychological mayhem, but it turns out that Craig (Cayleb Long) may be even better. They play a back and forth game of identity for the entire film, with neither ever holding the upper hand for long.

Craig is abducted while buying champagne for his wife and awakens in Bill's basement, who turns Craig into the killer and himself as a number of personas that are interrogating him. Jackson Davis is great in this as the killer, bringing a variety of voices, mannerisms and pure insanity to each new role. Seeing as how this is a film where two actors have to carry most of the weight, both Davis and Long really hold their own.

There's also a subplot where that wife -- Kelly (Mischa Barton, making her second recent appearance on this site) -- deals with an affair Craig is having. This made me feel like I was watching two different movies.

Directors Brian Conley and Nathan Ives may not have done many movies that you've heard of, but this movie proves that they're two talents to watch. The film looks really great, with special attention being obviously paid to lighting and shadow. I think they both have a great film in them and this is a good start.

The torture scenes here gradually increase in how rough and gory they are, starting with smashed teeth and only getting worse. There's also a plot twist or two here, but you'll be able to spot them coming from a few hundred feet out. It also owes a lot to Split, but is a more down to Earth tale.

That said -- the climax does NOT skimp on the gruesome, offering a real surprise. That part I enjoyed. I could have done without the one month later denouement, but some people like having things explaining. At least after an entire film of Micha Barton feeling estranged from the plot, it ties it all together.

Worth it
Found this little gem on netflix and didn't think much of it. Yes, the beginning is slow and the acting feels wooden but IT GETS BETTER. The ending was brilliant. And the way the killer offs his victims? Creative af. I love it. Definitely worth a watch.

5 minutes at the start, and 5 at the end. That's it
mjsreg19 September 2018
This is one of the most boring films I have seen in a long time.

Any sense of wonder or suspense disappears after a few minutes because the story is predictable and just plain stupid.

The only reason I gave this two stars is for the acting, which was reasonable considering everything else.

Watch five minutes at the start, and five minutes at the end, and that is the whole story worth giving time to.

Turns out the real victim is the viewer

Warning: Spoilers
One of the most disappointing movies I have ever watched. An entire plot is built up with somewhat interesting, yet dull, details and then is completely thrown out the window with the worst plot twist to appear in a horror film. If you're a fan of gore, this movies only redeeming quality, you'll still be disappointed by the terrible effects. Do not watch this movie if you place any value on your time. It is not worth it and you will be left feeling more pain than that which is inflicted on any person during the film.

Boring, bland, cheap, predictable. The only real torture is to the viewers....
cb-11415 September 2018
There seems to be a recent trend of low budget movies where the "action" takes place in one room/location and is focussed on 2 main actors for virtually the entire 90 minutes. This is one of those movies.

It's fair to say there isn't really much of a plot. In fact, the entire movie is a bit like watching two students in a method acting class being held in a dimly lit room. While there is an element of torture horror, it is very predictable and adds nothing to the "plot". If you're a gore fan, you will be disappointed.

Sadly, Mischa Barton's total screen time amounts to around 5 minutes of cutaway scenes - I'm guessing she turned up on set for no more than a couple of hours at most as a favor to the director.

In summary, if you enjoy serial killer movies, you will have an infinitely more enjoyable experience watching old episodes of Criminal Minds.

Excruciating
Watcher423 February 2019
This film is so boring.

I forced myself to keep watching just to see if anything interesting happened in the end. It did not.

Poor acting. Poor story. It was comical at times just how bad it was. I assume we are supposed to get some fantastic insight in to the killers mind, but the whole thing was pointless.

Should stay in the basement
TheLittleSongbird1 November 2018
There was some promise here in 'The Basement'. It had a cool poster/cover, a somewhat intriguing if very derivative premise and as someone with a general appreciation for the genre it fits under. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there (though there are decent to good ones as well), made me though apprehensive.

It is sad though that any potential it had is completely squandered, with every flaw in the book made and everything that annoys me watching a film present. 'The Basement' is really bad, with so many huge flaws, any potential that it had completely disappears in translation. There is little good here in 'The Basement', it is not irredeemable but goodness doesn't it come dangerously close to being.

The only redeeming merits being the spooky setting and the creepy acting for the killer.

Going further on to the negatives, the story does feel over-stretched and the more it progresses the film became duller, more predictable, more senseless and less unsettled and never gaining momentum. All the characters are too sketchy, even the killer and with cardboard thin and colourless personalities and with nowhere near enough to make one want to endear to them, all of them coming over as incredibly irritating to the extent you don't want them alive. Their annoying and illogical decision making and behaviours frustrates. The chemistry is bland and unfocused.

The sound quality is obvious and utilised cheaply (being too loud in the build ups and people's reactions), and the rest of the acting is lacking severely on the whole, that's actually an understatement as the worst of it is horrendous. Despite being top-billed Mischa Barton is not in it much, barely in it, and one doesn't miss her much. There is no sense of horror or engagement with the awful predicament they're in, and no connecting with the character, it just reeks of indifference which makes the viewer not care less too.

Dialogue can be stilted and rambling while the pace and film drags on forever, apparent from the very start, which is so bad that one seriously considers not continuing. Only did it myself for fairness sake, being a person who never judges a film without watching the whole thing and never bails on a film regardless of any temptation. Found too many of the supposedly shocking moments not surprising or scary and the atmosphere dreary, due to the excessive obviousness, too many confused moments and explanations and the complete lack of tension and suspense. Thrills are none, thanks to stodginess and excessive over-familiarity, and found myself never invested in what was going on, due to it being so dull and static.

A lot of 'The Basement' has really dull and going nowhere plot elements and often nonsensical and confusing character motivations, while too many of the things to make you shocked are far from creative or unsettling. Any attempts at twists fail to surprise.

Nothing frightens, there is no development and it's very predictable, while everything is unimaginative and are more odd than scary, completely failing to show any sense of dread. There is nothing interesting or illuminating. The direction is leaden, got the sense their heart was not in it, and the music is ill-fitting. 'The Basement' is very amateurish visually, too drearily lit and shows no care in the way it's shot, severely compromising any coherence. The editing is all over the place.

Altogether, very, very bad. 2/10 Bethany Cox

Not That Bad
carletonclements13 April 2019
To be honest, I don't get the hate on this movie. It isn't *that* boring; it isn't *that* poorly acted. I could've easily skipped this movie, as it didn't really impact the way I rate movies, but I did find myself laughing at times. The directing was poor, and the main character's acting was sub-par, but I'd still give the movie 5.6.

Sick movie for sick people
patrikbk2673214 October 2018
Seing movies like this one makes you feel that something was stolen from you. I feel the time I spent watching this sick junk was stolen from me and I want that time back. Misha Barton is one of those actors who makes you think of those silent era actors who didnt fit in when the sound came because of their voice. Her voice just doesn´t fit with her looks. Jackson Davis actually did a good performance here though.

Was that supposed to be an English accent?
dangleberry-5815029 April 2019
Surely there was enough budget to ask literally ANY English person to confirm that the accent sounded English! Don't they have voice coaches and the like over there?!

Don't trust reviews
PeacepiperF2020 November 2019
It seems so many on here are like infants wanting a movie they can't use their brain with a bunch of flashy scenes and butchered stories that makes no sense like a Disney movie well sorry this isn't that. I gave this movie a 6 plus two stars to help make up for the fake reviews.

Better than the reviews say
Well after starting this movie I scrolled through the reviews and was a little hesitant about continuing to the end! It wasn't as bad as many of them made it out to be, some good acting in parts but for those saying they couldn't see the ending coming...that was as predictable as me saying I'm not going to drink today and then cracking open a beer!

Who approved production? Did they even hire an editor/director/writer?

Warning: Spoilers
My guinea pigs could make a better movie. They can't even keep a cage clean.

I am so shocked this is even still on my TV and I haven't switched it off. 20 minutes is feeling like 20 years. However... it's kind of too hilariously awful to turn off.

If you miss it, you are not missing much. I do not recommend watching for any quality, but if you want to see something truly unique due to it's own accord, be warned. It's like no other!

TL/DR; Budget of $5 "Split".

Plot seemed interesting but suffered from subpar acting with poor execution
noraoinonen15 September 2018
The movie's first scene sets the tone of the movie - bad acting. It goes into "action" early on without dillydallying but unfortunately instead of being creepy and unsettling it feels just boring and straight-out stupid. The build up falls flat and not even the supposed torturing (which there isn't much of) doesn't save this movie to be worth watching. The gory parts are clearly fake, which is fine with some movies however for this one it just added to "can't do anything right".

When I first read the plot of this I didn't notice the tag-line pointing to 12 personalities but it became clear quite fast. The entire premise of 12 personalities feels extremely inorganic with all the "personalities" being clear roles played up. Any feel of true insanity is nowhere to be seen and leaves much to be desired.

I honestly didn't predict the last moments - but even that was completely ruined by having to literally spell out the situation in case anyone was stupid enough to not catch what was implied.

Don't waste your time, one of the few movies making me wish I could get back the time I spent. While it's not one of the ones I actually dropped watching (which are less than 10 from the abundance of movies I've seen over the years) I was seriously considering turning it off almost halfway through.

There is a cool Lamborghini driven by the lead character in the beginning...I'll give it that. Beyond that its a poor rip off of Hotel and Split.

This Movie Is Absolute Genius
codydwyer-3023411 April 2019
I can't believe no one has thought of this idea before! It's absolutely stunning in concept and perfectly executed! They've achieved the perfect torture movie by turning it on its head and making the film ITSELF pure torture for the poor soul stupid enough to watch it!

To achieve this brilliant goal they pulled no punches and really went for it with the worst dialogue, most cringe worthy acting, characters so unbelievable and moronic you just can't take it, and to top it all off, the cherry on top.... it's so boring I wanted to strap myself to a chair and have someone torture me just for something to do.

I'll put you down for a cheeseburger

Warning: Spoilers
Craig Owen (Cayleb Long) is a very successful musician. He is married to Kelly (Mischa Barton) who likes champagne. Outside of the liquor store, Craig is abducted by L.A.'s serial killer known as Gemini (Jackson Davis). Gemini, you can call me Bill, has Craig secured to a chair. Bill puts on various garbs, playing different people as talks to and tortures Craig. Like most of these films, Craig uses reverse psychology in an attempt to get away.

Nice ending twist I should have seen coming. Also can be seen as a dark comedy if you know the genre.

Guide: opening scene nudity. F-word.

LetsReviewThat269 April 2019
This film dosent deserve 3.7 stars. Its better than that. A not half bad thriller. I thought the cast all did a pretty good job Jackson Davis being the crown to this and how he played out with his characters . And with a twist you won't see coming but makes it just that bit better 6.00 stars

Terrible movie. Way to much talking. I fast forwarded most of it because it was just boring. It was like a knock off version of "Split" Sad I waisted $1.50 to rent it.

It's Irritating Ratings on Certain Movies Can't Be Trusted!
jon-stokes21-539-178751 February 2019
If you look at the member reviews many of you wouldn't even bother giving this movie the slightest chance, however if your read the critic reviews you'll find most critics not only liked it but had many compliments about it. Although you need to make it through the first 15 minutes before starting to see the entertainment value of the flick, just stay with it.

I hope it changes but I am starting to see member reviews become far and far less reliable, as if through organization it's being an outlet to attempt to shame movies to detour views in response from angry people for example someone who may have been dropped or replaced for a part in the movie, ect.

Depends why you're watching it
LucBolt8 September 2020
It's low budget and not much gore. However I think it does the torture well and keeps it entertaining. If you're watching in order to see an extended torture scene with a bit of quirkiness and not to over the top in gore then this is perfect. I had a lot of fun. If you're watching purely for over the top gore, I guess this could still be ok but maybe a little boring. If you're watching it as a thriller - plot/twists/ect. then you will be bored. in terms of plot they have no plot.

It's Dumb. Don't Watch. (SPOILERS)
miz265111 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is dumb. After watching the first few scenes, I thought it had a ton of potential. It was an interesting concept, pretty entertaining and I was excited to see how the movie progressed. HOWEVER, it never progressed.

I get that the guy is crazy, but his characters acted completely illogical and a lot of the scenes felt pointless. Some characters helped reveal interesting details about the killers, but none of it really mattered in the end and the whole gimmick grew dull after a while. Also, this had to be one of the most pointless uses of a clown in a horror movie. Can we please end this dumb horror trope?

Every scene with the wife is forgettable. She seemed completely disinterested and all her scenes felt like commercial breaks that took me out of the story. I'm aware of the ending, but I've never seen a more pathetic attempt to track your lost husband. She literally went to the liquor store found his car with a broken wine bottle next to it and came to the conclusion "oh, he must have met a woman and left me." WHAT?! Even with the twist ending, this scene (and her behaviors as a whole) makes no sense. If she knew what happened, then why go down to the liquor store?! Who is she fooling other than the audience? This scene's only purpose is to fill an obvious plot hole and throw the audience off her trail.

The ending is terrible. The twist focused on a character that was impossible to care about or become invested in. She literally had five minutes of screen time and every second of it was forgettable. We didn't get to know her. We didn't get to learn anything about her. Instead, she was just there and she done did it, because she has a twin brother and GEMINI.

The movie was briefly interesting and compelling, so I'll give it credit for that. The musician was really good at times and some of the characters were interesting, but not worth watching. Wasn't even comically bad. Just a bad movie.
