An universe that we've never been to before!
Chaokage25 July 2020
Before I say anything, watch this movie. If you are someone who is impressed by the world that a movie built around than this movie is a great one. My only issue with it is they didn't take advantage of this unprecedented world. If Marvel had any hand in this movie, I could see them making a huge franchise out of it. Still, watch it. It is something you have never seen before.

Weirdly watchable......
s327616926 July 2020
"Koma (Coma)" is a weirdly watchable sci fi horror from Russia.

This is a strangely disconcerting watch. Its presentation of a reality bending dream world, is a little hard on the synapses, until you become accustomed to its quirky nuances.

That said, its convincing back story, decent characterisations and sustained action, mark this film out, as a worthwhile watch. It has a very subtle "hint" rather than twist in the end too, that adds a further note of reality questioning discordance, that's quite effective.

Definitely one to consider, if you want a departure from conventional sci fi fare.

7/10.

Interesting

Story plot, although it feels like a mash up of inception and matrix. Probably a bit too long or slow at times but nice effects and plot twists.

Breath-taking visuals but with a weak ...
ashishgupta-045483 August 2020
The movie was a visual treat for all the sci fi lovers who do care about visuals more than anything. There are 2 alternate story lines that merge at one point in the movie. The movie came out as extremely new, refreshing and with breath taking details of what an alternate world could look like. The level of detail in CGI and the mix of reality with the concept of sci fi has been brilliant presented. Having said that ...

Clearly, the movie falls shy of good acting. The movie feels slow and bland to an otherwise thrilling concept mainly because the script! It does not seem to be written keeping actors in mind, rather it feels like someone imagined such a world without actors and had to force actors into the story line to build the world itself. Hence the dialogues don't feel that intense, the scenes with monsters seem rather shallow and don't turn you to the edge of the seat, there is not much of an emotional connection between the actors. Deaths of side actors don't really seem to matter and not really heart breaking. The 2 protagonists are rather poorly defined / their background could have been explored further.

However I clearly see a lot of potential here. The movie explores a lot of dimensions and the concept behind COMA's environment seems rather deep. I would suggest everyone to go watch it. I would say 5 for acting, 9.5 for Visuals and 9.5 for Concept, 7 for execution. I highly recommend this movie since what it looses to weak characters, gains for the execution of story lines, visuals and innovative direction Coma took.

Pretty watchable
Misss2530 May 2021
This is my first Russian movie and I must say, this is worth watching. The visuals of the movie is awesome and mesmerising at the same time. Yet,It feels like the concept is taken for ''Inception'' and ''Matrix'' but it tried to show it in a different way. Overall,it is good, can't really complain.

Not sleepy
kosmasp1 October 2020
Not sure if this is based on a novel (it would make sense), but it does look fantastic! Visually speaking the movie isa definite A+++ (add more plusses if you feel the need to). Story wise it does have a few flaws and acting/character wise you may feel a few bumps along the road too. Having said that, the movie does work more than nicely.

You get thrown in right from the start, not knowing what is happening, like the main character, but you get it fairly quickly. If you are into Science Fiction, you will be into this. The movie gets a bit cliche towards the end and maybe even a bit predictable for some. Still enough to wrap your mind around too and nice to see this coming from Russia

Between The Matrix and Inception but with his own ideas
abisio22 July 2020
I was not a big fan of STALKER or SOLARIS both considered Tarkovsky masterpieces; but considering Asimov was one of the greatest sci fi writers I give now and then a chance to Russin SciFi

I saw Attraction few years ago and recently The Blackout and the second part of Attraction (Invasion). I had to admit; Russian FX and digital imagery have a very good quality; however stories are not that good in terms of intrigue and resolution but are able to take some old ideas and rework them very good. Koma (COMA) is another example.

Taking some imagery and concepts from Inception and The Matrix; this movie is able to be different in itself and quite interesting if you are able to go beyond the first part; which does not seems to make a lot of sense; some events seem absurd or unnecessary. After a while; when ideas are clarified the logic kicks in.

Not much can be said about the story; because it will spoil part of the suspense; but let's only explain that the main character gets in a coma because of an accident and wakes up in a oniric universe with strange laws of physics and meets a group of people trying to survive there; things start twisting after a while.

Sadly the last part of the movie seems quickly resolved and lazy written; but the whole package is still interesting

Awful dubbing
stegasaurob14 December 2021
Looks great, sounds awful. The acting on the dubbed dialogue is embarrassingly bad. I'd much rather hear the original audio with subtitles, but that doesn't seem to be an option.

Very enjoyable film with super effects
contactmaz24 July 2020
Considering this film was made on a not-so-high budget, this was a remarkable and excellent film.

The story line was very good, the special effects weren't special, they were superb!

Nothing like Inception by the way. More like a fantasy sci-fi film that was action from start to finish.

Recommend this film highly.

Amazing CGI But...
omendata15 August 2020
A truly groundbreaking visual extravaganza but the character development was pretty poor and you don't really get to know or care about any of them which is a shame.

The storyline is well put together but lacks the human element and feels much like the CGI; artificial but still it is a film for every Sci-Fi fan who will not fail to be awestruck by the visuals and for once the CGI does make the film and overcomes a lot of the poorer elements of the film.

A great premises but nothing to back it up
thekarmicnomad31 July 2020
So this has a great premises of a world made of fragmented memories. How does this work? It's a bit like, err... when you tune in a radio and get between stations... err yeah. Well, now that is all sorted we can move on.

The action sequences are like more interesting but cheaper sequences from the movie "Inception". There is some really exciting, quirky things that go on that will put you on the edge of your seat.

So why is this all going on? Well there is a thing and we need to get to err... Yeah we have to avoid the black ghost things that float around.. but you can sort of forget about them... sort of... Oh and we need to build a magic city! How do we do that? Err it just appears. So call it a day then? No, we have to have a fight to the death for some reason. oh, err, cool?

Nothing really makes sense. Beyond being pricks, we never learn much about the main characters as they bumble around using their special powers. What little bits of story there are seem quite pointless and I didn't ever care who lived or died. The big revelation near the end is going to be as dumb as you expect.

Everything was impressive... Except that the voice-over was a little bit cheesy... But guess watching this movie in it's original language would be superb..

Russian Inception.
paulclaassen24 January 2021
'Coma' is Russia's answer to 'Inception' - to a certain extent. The interesting visuals certainly reminds one of 'Inception', and the world in 'Coma' reminded me of 'Dragon Hunters'.

We've seen many movies about people going to 'the other side', or what becomes of us when we die (think 'Dreams may come', for example), but I've never seen a film about what happens to people when they are comatose.

Architect Viktor wakes up to a world that can only be described as a nightmare. Trying to find out what's going on, he is faced with more questions than answers. The film is very difficult to understand at first, but everything does become clearer as the story unfolds. To fully understand the film, more than one viewing is recommended to spot what you might have missed.

A Film like this is bound to deliver numerous plot flaws, and actions will be questioned. Reality, dreams and the coma world also blurs, and there's some confusion as to what one can actually remember. Ultimately, though, this was an exciting, unique film with lots of action, intrigue and suspense. The Reapers were well designed, creepy creatures.

There's an interesting twist and reveal.

Style over substance
cruzarts-7394626 July 2020
This film looks amazing and really belongs to special effects fans. There's not much of a story. The characters are breathless and seem very deep, severely deep, cosmically deep; but the breathless proclamations and intense stares do not a narrative make.

There's a balance missing from this movie: in the end it feels like I've been expecting cake, but only fed icing for the duration. The cast are so attractive, I wanted to go along with them, but got lost in the eye-popping, ever swiveling POV and melting creatures.

Pleasantly surprised!
ubdb-850892 August 2020
I was surprised by the beauty of this movie. Exceptional scenery and acting was up to par as well. It's not inception and it isn't meant to be. If you watch this movie not expecting Inception, you're in for a treat!

Inception II ?
jayg_5829 July 2020
Coma borrowed heavily from Inception, without the actors, acting, and with a much simpler story line. The CGI was the movie, the story made no sense, so have a few and be entertained by the visuals. You do need the subtitles to make any sense of the rather weak plot. They could have solved that by throwing out what little plot and character development there was and just giving us an 'in yo face' plot with a little more action and maybe a little sex? Fun watch.

Surprisingly good
laserburn27 July 2020
Glad to see that Russian SF tradition is alive and well in this day and age. The premise of the film is quite interesting, even if it obviously is ripping off some aspects of Inception. The movie is loads of fun, everything works, even though the scenario could have been better, in some places character actions and motivations don't make enough sense. Definitely worth watching for SF fans.

Boring
brucethomson-4787216 February 2021
This was fundamentally boring. Off to a good start with some effective effects but slowly became less interesting. As the 1 hr 49 moved on there was less and less intriguing or engaging content.

This taught me nothing, and entertained me little. Avoid.

A true visual masterpiece.
Achyut_Prashast_Singh9 March 2021
Coma is one of the most gorgeous movies ever made, and this is coming from someone who finds CGI-studded Hollywood sci-fi action movies hard to resist. The film has some of the most picturesque visuals I've personally ever seen. I'm glad I rented this, and although the Hindi dub was pretty average, the story itself was so immersive that one thing didn't bother me after a point of time. Performance wise, this film has some great work done by the actors due to which the characters end up memorable. While the real story remains shrouded in mystery during the first half, the second reveals a fantastic twist without getting derailed. Plus, it's action-packed to the brim, and from the very beginning itself. Again, the visual effects make this film what it truly is and I hardly remember a single shot where I didn't exclaim "wow". One could easily mistake this as a mere CGI spectacle, but the whole universe and conceptualization of Coma are the reasons that doesn't happen. Not in my case at least. If you enjoy sci-fi action films, Coma deserves a chance as well. Something tells me I might want to collect and watch the film once again in the future, albeit in the original language now.

Intriguing story with pretty well-done effects
getpablo-8094421 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There's something about Russian sci-fi movies that have been released in the past ten years or so. The special effects are almost on a par with Hollywood, in that they are very good. It is the story aspect where they still have to catch up. Movies like Nightwatch, Dark Planet, Guardians and Sputnik are visually spectacular with interesting concepts but the storylines feel so rushed, almost like afterthoughts, as if the FX were the main focus.

Coma (or Koma) to me fares slightly better in this regard. The effects are good and there is actually an interesting story that explains this weird and mind-bending/gravity-bending world. It could benefit from more polish and details are quickly glossed over but it's a good start from this director.

The hero of our story, an architect, wakes up one morning to find out his world is literally in bits and pieces, almost Escher-like with multiple surfaces and micro-gravity. To make matters worse, he's chased by this weird-looking apparition that I can only describe as similar to evaporating tar...if you can picture that in your mind.

The rest of the movie explains how everything became the way it is and if you aren't asking too many questions, you should be satisfied with the explanation, to a certain level, anyway.

There are comparisons to Matrix and Inception, and while perfectly reasonable, it's not a complete copy. In fact, I am actually disappointed that they didn't explore this broken world more. There was so much potential in seeing bits and pieces of recognisable cityscapes all jumbled up and jumping into space and landing on your feet sideways on a completely different part of the city (world?).

If you are a sci-fi fan, you should definitely give this movie a try. It's got potential, and if Hollywood ever decided to remake it, I am sure it would be a visual spectacle. I am glad I got to watch it.

Recommended, especially if you are a sci-fi fan looking for something different.

Really enjoyable movie, wow
ebookgamer17 July 2020
Living in the UK I always assumed only Hollywood made movies of this quality, and SFX. And any review saying it's like inception, so what? It's like saying all heist, spy or slasher movies aren't worth watching if you've seen one movie! This film was entertaining, great story and ideas. I would recommend. I hope Netflix releases it with dubbing. I want to find other Russian movies now, I've almost run out oh Hollywood films!

Might be the worst movie I have ever seen.
rinhardmnz15 February 2020
Got caught by a nice psychodelic images in the trailer, so chose this one over some other mediocre title to go see at the movie. I've expected it to be "not that great", but what I've actually experienced was really beyond anything I could possibly expect. After 15-20 minutes my face hurt like hell of constant facepalming, which I just couldn't stop doing.

Nothing in the movie makes sense. Everything in it is a cliche of a copy of a cliche in the worst possible meaning of it. The plot, that is trivial and still illogical and dumb, the predictably stupid actions of characters and interactions between them, for gods sake even the nicknames of characters, which were a total cliche, but moreover still don't make any sense in this movie - all these things make you puke and constant feeling of Spanish shame and pain from facepalming make the experience even worse.

Watching this movie is a total waste of time, money and brain sells. The story doesn't devellope throughout the movie... I mean if you could call it a story. The characters also don't develop in any way and behave like bots for an 8-bit game - no logic, no rational or emotional justification - they just to what they do. The rules of the world, although being silly and illogical from the very beginning, change from scene to scene with ease, just to fit the current scene. And just really the worst cliche every other minute, like for example a group of heros, being chased by a monster and spitting "aaahhh we need to hurry!" every second, suddently stops to discuss some irrelevant bullcrap for the next 10 minutes.

The only reason to watch this movie could be only if you're making a list of the worst movies of all ages. You might really have a winner here. But be prepared to lose a lot of brain cells in the process.
