Chandler's muscles
tenshi_ippikiookami20 September 2017
The second episode of season four of "The Last Ship", "The Pillars of Hercules" can be divided into two blocks: Nathan James' adventures in the Mediterranean sea and Chandler's search for a purpose in life. The first one, even if silly, delivers. The second, sadly, no.

The Nathan James is on a cruise when it encounters some problems. Cue the crew trying to survive a dangerous threat. It is all very silly, with a couple of head-scratching plot developments, but the action is good enough, and it is engaging and fun. You will be able to forgive its problems.

Chandler losing his shirt... Well, not so much. Chandler, for unknown reasons, decides to join the bad guy and his mafia and go around punching people in silly punch fights. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and, on top of that, the bad guys are the kind that kill their own people just because. You will expect a cat to make an appearance at any moment. Of course, we know it is all an excuse so Chandler can get back to his ship, but it stretches reality to its breaking point.

It all ends up being entertaining enough (never actually 'good'), but close to jumping the shark.

Warning: Spoilers
Tom Chandler understanding what he needs to do to survive, risking his morals to send a fighter to death (if his fists didn't do it, we know his handler would have) is a step this show needed to take. The virus' impact is even stronger now and that is the reset button the show needed.

The only thing is we can predict how things will go throughout the year. We know fairly soon Tom will be back with the crew on the ship and fighting the good fight.

When Sasha was reloading on the cliff edge towards the end of the battle.... she can be seen to reload the magazine backwards. However, she is not seen to hold up the weapon again to check on the result.

A total nonsense

Warning: Spoilers
Nathan James can be mysteriously disabled after being hit a puny water mine. Computers down, weapons down, engines dead. Yea, right. This kind of 'action' is good only for Startrek type of Alien-Tech encounter. But later even a missile hit, with a huge explosion leaves merely a "6 inch hole" and no apparent adverse effects. Yea right, again.

Meanwhile Capt. Chandler, now living in Greece anonymously, decides to join a villain who terrorizes local fishermen, and steals their catch. However, it shows quickly that the bad guy is in fact a James-Bond like villain, with a beautiful woman in tow of course, who likes to arrange naked fist fights. Naturally, Chandler proves to be a super-boxer and fighter, who beats opponents into submission. And he gets the girl for personal nights of passion, which he suffers only to enter the secret office in a flamboyant villa overlooking a blue Aegeyan Sea.

God have mercy, we waited so long for this season to get ...this?

season 4 is TERRIBLE
mathomas-280534 September 2017
Wow, I've never seen a show go so bad so fast. Seasons 1-3 were really terrific. What happened? Biggest disappointment of my TV watching career (well, since LOST, The Sopranos, etc.). Who in the world did they turn this over to? Really sad. No wonder the young people have stopped watching TV.

Previous seasons did a good job of re-inventing themselves, adding GOOD new characters, plot twists, etc. This year, NADA.

There's no emotion, no plot, nothing interesting at all, just a lot of wandering around and shooting. You guys better get some writers and directors on board fast, or you're gonna be history.

I hope this same thing doesn't happen to "Designated Survivor."

Season 4 is awful at least what we've seen so far...

Warning: Spoilers
*** Spoiler *** My wife and I enjoyed seasons 1-3. We were looking forward to season 4. What happened? They must have changed writers and the director! The script was awful. The Nathan James strolls into a "fishing net" because they said it's only a fishing net and the net contained an IED which disabled the entire ship! Really, the entire ship including the backups? Really? They send a crew to take out the rocket launcher. The crew finds the rocket launcher. One crewman takes a bullet trying to take it out and crawls towards the launcher in pain. Then three crew members group together in front of the launcher under fire and sit there while the launcher is targeting the Nathan James. They do nothing to stop it. The call in a 6" shell from the James on their position and jump off the cliff and the 6" shell impacts the launcher! Really? Those three crew member are then seen aboard the James and the crew member who took the bullet was fine and no mention of him taking a bullet! Meanwhile our hero captain is off in Greece. The friend that took him in was killed by this group of thugs. He then agrees to go with them as if nothing happened. He is then put in a tough-man fight with this bull-Greek guy and shows him who's boss. He then makes out with the thug boss's sister. Pretty pathetic! My wife and I might be done with this series! What a shame.

We're no longer watching this show - TERRIBLE
iteese2 November 2018
Read the other reviews that give this 1/10, they're pretty spot on. My partner and I aren't going to waste any time on this season. Such a shame after season 1-3 were so good. The acting is mostly fine (except Capt Chandler), but every scene is so staged, it's all so forced. Capt Chandler is terrible, but I think he's doing the best he can with an atrociously bad script and directing. This is C grade television at best.

Go look at a Map

Warning: Spoilers
Having been there before, U.S. Navy Ships departing from Rota Spain routinely go to Barcelona, NEVER towards unstable Algeria.

From Barcelona Spain, they then say within visual range of the land to the North, head toward Corsica, from Corsica they routinely go to U.S. Navy Base Naples for Resupply, and Port of Call. Then they go around Sicily to Southern Greece. From North of Crete they then head south to the Suez Canal.

THE REASON THIS ROUTE IS TAKEN IS BECAUSE OF A POSSIBILITY OF LONG RANGE LAND BASED ANTI SHIP MISSILES. Especially after Democrat President Obama's Overthrow of U.S. Ally President Gaddaffi, with the U.S. Ally Libyan Anti Ship Missiles and Decades of Weapons at Hight Razma Benghazi Libya then falling into the hands of the Democrat President Obama Non Libyan "Libyan Rebels" of Al Quada's Ansar Al Shariah. Ansar Al Shariah after becoming the Government of Libya then renamed themselves Islamic State Libya. They then attacked U.S. Ally French Algeria, successfully attacked U.S. Ally Tunisia and overran the evacuated U.S. Embassy, both the U.S. Embassy Tunisia and Sudan were evacuated September 17, 2012. Democrat President Obama's Supported "Islamic Democracy Movement Tunisia" then renamed themselves Islamic State Tunisia.

Take a guess why I know the details above. We were temporarily attached to U.S. AFRICOM at that time. Previously, I had been on one of the long ones from USACOM (previously U.S. Navy Atlantic Command) to USN Bahrain The Missiles fired at the Nathan James looked like short range Ground to Ground Unguided Rockets, not Guided Anti Ship Missiles. The possibility of hitting a ship with a Unguided Ground to Ground Rocket is very small.

VERY IMPORTANT It will take Months to traverse Algeria, Libya, Egypt with a camel (That was loaded with the seeds). Especially, since she is walking not riding the camel. Anybody figured out the Libyan Deserts (Ubari, Marzuq, Libyan, the Great Sand Sea) plus the Sahara Desert. With all that support why even risk losing the seeds. Even Local Experts die there even with extensive external support.
