Surprisingly not bad(even if the 130 minute running time is a bit much)
IonicBreezeMachine26 July 2020
Netflix's Sandler output has certainly been erratic in terms of quality. The Ridiuclous 6 was probably the worst western themed comedy made since John Candy's unfortunate final film Wagons East, The Do-Over was a marginal improvement but came off as trying to hard to ape the Jon Lucas and Scott Moore shock style of comedy popularized in their films. Sandy Wexler still has many of the tropes and trappings of other films in Sandler's repertoire, but what this film has that others didn't is good naturedness to it that was lacking from his previous comedies. The film stars Adam Sandler as the titular Sandy Wexler a loyal but not all that effective talent manager in 90s Hollywood with an eccentric group of wannabes for clients who range from ventriloquists, to Evel Knievel style stuntmen, and struggling actors/actresses. The story follows Sandy's discovery of the talented Courtney Clarke played with genuine talent and charisma by American Idol winner Jennifer Hudson. Sandy tries to keep himself at a respectable distance even letting her go once he is convinced by others that she'd be better off with a new manager but their paths keep intersecting for one reason or another. Before this movie even came out it was already being trashed because the trailer was nothing but back to back scenes of Sandler using his voice. However this time there is context. While the voice Sandler uses for Sandy can be grating, it is spaced out and the scenes in the trailer are a few instances of him at his most grating and luckilly the film surrounds Sandler most of the time with other actors so his voice has a chance to take a breath. Another point in this films favor is the character of Sandy is an affectionate sendup of Sandler's real life manager so it isn't taken to the ridiculous extremes of say something like Jack and Jill and we're still able to reasonably like Sandy as a character. With that said the movie is WAY to long at 2 hours and 10 minutes and really should've been 90 to 100 minutes at max. But despite it's length problem this is a pleasant enough outing for Sandler fans and reminds us that he does have genuine talent. Despite some rough spots a marginal recommendation.

Sandy Wexler is the forty year old virgin without the jokes
machieavelli14 April 2017
The movie raises the thought how can someone so uncoordinated have such a successful career. Adam Sandler portrays a talent agent/scout in the 1990's His awkward stance and opinions land him to find and meet Courtney "Jennifer Hudson' while babysitting the kids from another client played By the real life Sandler's Adams Family...There Sandy see's that Courtney has a amazing singing voice and he lays down the spiel which comes as a bit of a reel off and makes Courtney a bit skeptical..She soon realizes that is part of Sandy's charisma and character and begins to take him seriously.

Sandy Wexler 2017 Is part of Happy Madison Production & Netflix deal with Adam..This movie completes the three movie deal and opens the door for four more movies that Adam is going to make for Netflix. The movie in general is quite humorless at times and a bit depressing. Sandy is a lonely person who truly doesn't have anyone by hes side. All he has is his work and hes dedication to it.. The man will clearly do anything for hes clients but hes comes off as impolitic to the rich & famous. He is mocked, ridiculed, prodded by the industry and even ostracized from a members only golf club...

It is not a bad movie per-sea being Adams Sandler's first movie I ever saw that ran more than '90 MINUTES' in duration. However with so many comedians making cameos there where plenty of moments the movie could have given us a couple laughs, unfortunately this doesn't happen.. I saw it as poorly wasted opportunity to not have Lorne Micheal's Or Jimmy Kimmel, Or Conan O'Brien, Or Chris Rock, Or David Spade, Or Allen Covert to make the audience laugh.. Over all it was a bit of a left handed monkey wrench in writing department..

I say if your a Adam Sandler fan like me Its worth nuking some popcorn and watching it, If your expecting this movie to be Adam's comedic comeback...THINK AGAIN!!!

Fan of Adam Sandler, but not this movie.
stephenw-3018021 April 2017
I have been a big fan of Adam Sandler since his days in SNL. I live in NYC and had the pleasure of meeting him one time at a party and will say my short experience with him was pleasant and quite normal. Normal in the sense of his fame and notoriety. Meaning, he seemed like "the every day guy" who has not let Fame and fortune go to his head.

IMO, a large percentage of his films are very funny and he clearly possesses a broad range of talent. Obviously he is a comedian by trade, but can act in serious dramatic roles too that can really move you. Ie: Reign over me. I would like to see him in more serious roles as I believe his talent, again, is broad reaching.

His Forte and Bread and Butter is Comedy and I always liked his usage of reappearing actors and many cameos he utilizes in many of his films. And Sandy Wexler is a prime example of that again.

That said, "Sandy Wexler" is way below par for the typical Sandler film. 20 minutes into it I felt like it was a rip-off of Woody Allens gem "Broadway Danny Rose". The movie was Wayyyyy too long at 131 minutes and, although it had its moments, I was very disappointed in the plot and his performance. It seems much of his screen persona revolves around self depreciation which can be very funny and endearing but the formula simply does not work here.

Sandler's films always seem to follow a very similar plot line where he is a lovable loser who manages to always wind up on his feet and transforms himself into the unlikely Hero of the story by the films end. This one is no different and I think A.S. Needs to break away, perhaps at his own peril, a different style of delivering his undoubtedly natural comedic ability.

If you are an avid A.S. Fan you will go see any film he is in. This film is not terrible nor is it close to one of the top ten films of his career. I am not divulging any facts about the film intentionally, as I feel , when someone loves a particular actor/actress' work they will watch any movie that person is in. Especially when they have the lead role in a given film.

To those A.S. Fans, I would not say "stear clear at all costs" .....but, do not go into the film expecting something different or even unique about "Sandy Wexler" if you like the plot, as I mentioned earlier, rent (or On-Demand") Woody Allens "Broadwat Danny Rose" and you will get my meaning.

Sorry Fans, after a film like "that's my Boy", for example, this was a too long poor effort, minimum laughs film. Definitely not the Sandler I enjoy very much and expect from a comedian with his talent.

Bad, Even by Sandler Standards
evmcelroy14 April 2017
Because I have seen a few Sandler movies that I found to be interesting and well-scripted/acted, I am always willing to view a new entry in his career. I am sorry to report that this is one of his worst. When Woody Allen made this it was titled "Broadway Danny Rose" and it was head and shoulders above this movie. The Sandler character was a low-rent version of Jerry Lewis at his silliest and the plot uninteresting. Disappointing, but I'm not giving up. Sandler has greatness in him and I'm forever hopeful.

A pleasant surprise!
Deniz7210 May 2017
In a film I tend to look for a combination of factors, one of which being originality and good acting. This took me by surprise as, although it started out as almost seeming like a funny Adam Sandler type of move with silly elements, I started to enjoy it when Adam's character started to develop and take a more sentimentle and more in depth aspect. I enjoyed this movie, even though it wasn't one of Adam's best performances, but enjoyable nevertheless and entertaining with a little twist!

Watch Broadway Danny Rose instead
moviegik24 April 2017
This movie is really bad, It had some promise with all those cameos, but the movie is not watchable. Sandler is not funny anymore, and it has almost the same premise as Broadway Danny Rose, the Woody Allen movie about a hapless talent agent with really unsuccessful acts.

Broadway Danny Rose is told in flashback, amongst a group of comedians over lunch.

Sounds familiar?

So my recommendation is to avoid this, and go watch the Woody Allen movie if you haven't; it is way better, and funny unlike this one.

Sandy Wexler was a long, but enjoyable movie. I'd recommend!
jdtoyshow17 April 2017
Sandy Wexler stars Adam Sandler as a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the 1990s. He is representing a group of eccentric clients on the fringes of show business. His devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney Clarke, a tremendously talented singer who he discovers at an amusement park. Over the course of a decade, the two of them play out a star- crossed love story.

I honestly think Sandy Wexler had potential. Adam Sandler was...actually pretty good. The all around acting was actually pretty great! One of the things that originally turned me off of this movie originally was Sandler's voice. I mean, it worked in one movie, dude! The voice wasn't too annoying..you can actually get used it after a while. Though, being a movie critic, I did notice this movie was edited terribly. There's this one scene where Sandy is talking to Courtney. He picks up his drink, and in the next shot it disappears. It is also blatantly obvious Sandler did some voice overs on his already completed scenes. There's parts where you can see his lips moving, but words are coming out faster.

There are actually a few funny parts! It's not painful in the way Jack and Jill was. Wow! I'm shivering just thinking of it!

Like many of Sandler's movies, there are way too many celebrity appearances. Some of these include Quincy Jones, Paul Blart..I mean...Kevin James, David Spade, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel, Chris Rock, Quincy Jones, Vanilla Ice, Terry Crews, Rikishi, Weird Al, and Garth himself, Dana Carvey. The movie is full of cameos like these. Though, they all come together in the end. At times, Kevin James' character feels way too forced. Compared to Wexler's other clients, he wins the most on-air time. Sure, the first few scenes with him were funny, but by 2 scenes of James', you think 'How many times are they going to pull the same dumb joke?'

The movie did benefit from being on Netflix, and not an actual movie. Sandler's past few movies bombed, and this would've, too.

The movie is set in the 90's, but it didn't need to be. The 90's aspect is so forgettable, when there could've been so much more to it! Though, there is a scene where Courtney falls in love with a coffee chain owner (Starbucks), and Sandy says it will never work. With the inclusion of Weird Al and QUincy Jones, this movie would be better set in the 80's, not 90's. It did have nice use of older footage. For example, Courtney goes to the 1995 Grammy Awards. We see shots from other artists from the original show.

Sandy Wexler accomplished its job: a forgettable comedy. Sure, it's enjoyable, but at over 2 hours long, you almost want it to end halfway through. The movie really does pick up by the end.

Is Sandler back to being funny? Well, this was a great start. If Sandler does another Sandy he'll be back. This was an enjoyable movie, which I'd recommend.

What...
joeyc-1185918 April 2017
I have been a fan on Adam Sandler and probably always will be. I wont let a few bad movies change what I think about him, but come on man this was terrible. I got bored and lost interest and actually turned this movie off. Your come back movie is yet to be seen. As I said though, will always be fan.

Warning: Spoilers
Based on a real life manager of Sandler there're some funny moments based on the character. The story is told through celebs who share their experiences with him and how quirky he is. From his laugh to his awkward mannerisms. In spite of that he does his best to understand and represent his clients to the best of his ability. I personally liked it and if you like Sandler you'll enjoy this otherwise you might want to skip it.

Korean Torture techniques?
alci35014 April 2017
I don't understand, was this made as some sort of torturing technique? I'm sure anyone will tell you anything you want, as long as you stop the horror of this "video". What exactly was the purpose of this? Some sort of The Office meets 80's scumbag? I suppose it could be some sort of artwork I don't understand. I usually enjoy Adam Sandler movies. But he should look at his past and see what worked for him, because this sort of, whatever this is, doesn't work for him. I find it even more pitiful that so many Hollywood legends took part in this. I would award this movie for being the biggest movie disaster of the year. I would give it all the awards winnable.

The hate is unfair
tixepower15 April 2017
For what it is, the movie is pretty good.

It's a comedy inspired by real events, a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the 1990s. So see it as semi-documentary type of movie with some laughs here and there.

I don't know anything about the manager but it seems that he is that weird as Adam Sandler portrays him to be, and the audience for some reason mix those two together thinking Adam Sandler is to blame for some parts of the manager's character? Like the voice for example, the manager seems to have that kind of voice..

Also, some people watching this probably expected more comedy and fiction, and finish it disappointed. I started watching this without any expectations, just that it's some kind of a movie based on real events, and I had a positive experience watching it.

Stopped after 10 minutes
timkay222 April 2017
What's with Adam Sandler insisting on using the same voice for every character? You're an actor, so act! The voice is really irritating and his character is an aged "Waterboy." I told myself I would try and sit through this one, but I just couldn't do it. Instead, I opted to scrape my fingernails on a chalkboard. It was more entertaining,

Awful
gelashvili7917 April 2017
I used to love Adam Sandler's movies.. What a tragedy, he has not sense of time.. He is doing same stupid voice and annoying acting over and over again.. Is there anybody near him to tell him? What a waste of time. A lot of famous people acting in this movies can't make it better. I would give this movies 2 stars if I find 1 funny moment in it..But I couldn't, so giving 1 star..

hard to understand why...
JohnJohnRomualdez14 April 2017
... Adam Sandler has turned from one of the funniest guys on screen to the exact opposite. Sandy Wexler is Sandler's latest Netflix effort and it's even worse than his previous two Netflix productions. Wexler is supposed to be an inside look into Hollywood of the early 1990s. Why? I didn't get it. Is it funny? Not at all. Wexler somehow wants to draw us into this time period and fails miserably.

Worst, Sandler acts with some idiotic Jerry Lewis like nasal voice which clearly is only annoying. (and Jerry Lewis was great in doing the nasal voice BTW). I can no recommend this film. I wish Sandler would go back and make some smart and actually funny comedy. But it sure doesn't look like it.

Another vapid installment from a 1 sided actor
dave-5602517 April 2017
Sandler is admittedly a financially successful actor. So, I suspect he's laughing all the way to the bank. Wexler is just another installment of his polarized brand of acting and humor. His mumbling and bumbling performance is just another incarnation of water boy. Shame on all of those who are so wanting of camera time to pose for cameos in this dreck.

Bravo to Netflix for supporting this laughless crap.

A 100% Adam Sandler movie. Amazing
giudici7615 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know why a few people don't like this movie because I watched a good movie with a Sandler in a good shape. Funny, touching, not as exaggerated as other movies, and I like his new tendency to be inspired by other source (Pirandello for The do over and Woody Allen for this). I really liked it and I guess it'd be fine not only for Sandler's fans. PS spoiler: the credits part in the end is really funny!

My ears are bleeding
kennybenny-6950914 April 2017
My sister decided to put this on. If I knew Adam Sandler was in it I would have stopped her. Adam Sandler's character voice is worse than the sound of a dental drill chizzeling teeth. And why is it every role Adam plays he acts the exact same. This movie was defiantly made to torture people. I'll be honest I'm not going to finish this movie. I'm going to clip my toe nails and that would be more fun.

setabs-669-17538911 January 2018
I really liked it,light and sweet and not as crude as some of his other films,a bit hard to get into at the beginning but this movie rewards your perseverance, worth a watch,he starts of with that trade mark voice which can be bit grating but it softens over the course of the film, this is the best of his Netflix films and the star cameos are fun.

Surprised By The Horrendously Low Score Here . . . Also, One Of My Favorite Sandler Films
Spencer-Staggs5 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Sandy Wexler" is a great film that I honestly love. Sandy Wexler is a talent manager who finds a person with real talent. And honestly it's really sad to see Sandy spiral down in the a little over halfway through the film. Considering that Terry Crews' character was by far my favorite in the film. A Definitive watch for Sandler fans.

Adam Sandy Wexler
kosmasp12 March 2022
I'm a bit surprised this did not fare so well. It is right in Sandlers alley .. his schtick if you want to call it that. And I don't mean that in a bad way or condescending. It's what he is best known for - now is the story of this manager you've never heard of true? I have no idea and I don't care that much to really search for that (I did google a little bit and a manager with a similar name seems to exist, but I reckon most was made up).

The movie has a lot of celebrities in weird cameos praising or pulling Wexler down - depending on the situation and point in timeline we are in. The comedy sort of works if you are an Adam Sandler fan - a die hard fan that is. Running time is a bit long and the movie is overall quite predictable ... well which Sandler movie isn't? From his comedies that is ... seen worse with him in it, seen better ... a decent effort I'd say, especially because it doesn't take itself too seriously and is consistent tone wise almost all the way through.

Sandler seems to be going for as Stupid as possible in this role - not funny in the least
cfourie66 September 2017
Not sure whether Sandler actually watches himself in these awful films he seems intent on making lately. The premise seems to be: find the stupidest character with the most annoying voice you can, get a weak and pointless story and make a movie that should not even go straight to TV. Netflix needs to be a bit more selective with their film choices.....what a load of absolute rubbish!

Not one laugh or funny moment ! its the type of movie that will irritate you more than a mosquito in your bedroom, A contender for a RASPBERRY no doubt ! ADAM SANDLER needs to give it up he had his day .
