Falls well short of being a GOOD Demon Possession horror!
jorgito20013 January 2023
For the record, I'm seeing what looks like, tons of fake reviews, some going so far as saying those that didn't like it is due to culture being "lost" for certain audiences, I strongly disagree as I am of Latin descent and speak fluent Spanish, so nothing was lost in translation here. I figure I'd chime in with a quick review of PROS and CONS of this movie. PROS: Its has the dark atmosphere nailed and at times can be genuinely creepy. The actors are great and the acting is good enough to keep you invested in the characters, especially Priest Menendez himself. CONS: A weak story that could've been told in a 30 minute anthology series. The movie takes itself WAY too seriously given the material and, certain...situations...presented later in the film. Some of the dialogue is downright laughable! Also didn't know a good old fashioned beat down was part of the exorcism ritual, but here it is, unnecessarily brutal and long. As far as exorcism films, this isn't the worst (I hate how the term "worst movie ever" gets thrown around so easily), but there's also plenty better out there. If you need a quick 90 minute possession horror film, I strongly recommend the superior Mexican/Venezuelan production, "The Exorcism of God (2021)".

It would've been a 8 but...

Warning: Spoilers
The film was decent up until the last 20 minutes... The movie felt a little slow at times, the gore was actually quite convincing looking, and it had moments of comedy whether intentional or not, i thought it was tasteful without being over the top. I have to agree the movie felt, at times, similar to evil dead...Though the possession/exorcist trope is very prevalent within the horror movie genre, one thing i can admit i liked was that this films method of exorcism was...different, to say the least, it was comical at times to see that a priests go to exorcism method being to beat the cr*p out of the possessed person. My main and truly only issue with this movie was the p*dophilia, which was unnecessary. I get with some possession movies the possessed displays some kind of perversion but this was honestly just disgusting. I almost stopped watching the movie because of it. I do wish I had read some reviews before watching the movie because that's just not my cup of tea. All in all the movie fell a bit short for me, and it wasn't anything I would necessarily recommend for your next horror movie night.

So confused about the film
nargizmmli15 November 2020
The movie is a new perspective for exorcism. The effects, surrounding, and acting is good. However, I felt lost in the story. Not a waste of time, but not an interesting film.

Better comedy than horror film
Horror_Flick_Fanatic1 December 2020
I've seen many possession films, but I don't think I've seen one in which the exorcism is conducted by Mike Tysoning a teenage girl. Lol.

I couldn't stop laughing when the priest repeatedly reminded the girl's father to read the Bible verses in a gringo accent to fool the demon. Lol, Then the priest reminds the man to forget the gringo accent because the demon already know he wasn't a gringo. Lol. Pure comedy. Olalay pinche gringo!

a torturous twisted seanse
ops-5253530 October 2020
I didnt quite expect to see when i first started this devil excorsism alla' mechico. it has as usual a long slow intro, just as the originalos made in the 70's and you get this sound feeling that this must be a hysteric parent that wish to retain power as an adult towards a blossoming, wanna have fun, daughter.

but the excorsist of 70's are minced meat compared to this. i liked the second half very well, because it had so many funny, but also extremely violent phases that it almost came to be like laughing on adrenaline, and you get so confused considering who is the devil among the caracters.

so its demonology at its best, a well acted and produced religiou horror thinks the grumpy old man.recommended

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie reluctantly. It was not chosen by me I had no idea what was going to happen Well I must warn you. It is between scary and ridiculous. I did not watch the ending though so I do not know if she got rid of the demon but I could not care less and I just could not sit through the whole movie. I really like the fact that Netflix makes movies in many languages BUT this movie was awful, disturbing, disgusting and not good at all . I do not like exorcism movies. I kind of despise them but I have watched some decent exorcism movies. This one was not.

Intriguing Exorcism Film
Pairic31 October 2020
The Day Of The Lord: Menendez (Juli Fábregas) is a former priest, a boy died during an exorcism and he was imprisoned. He drinks whiskey, has nightmares, people appear to him, he speaks to a mysterious person on the phone. It's difficult to tell his realty from his delusions. A friend he met in prison visits and tells the ex-priest that his teen daughter Raquel (Ximena Romo) is possessed and begs him to perform an exorcism. Eventually Menendez agrees and the girl arrives at his house. But is she possessed or just an ordinary teenager acting up. Menendez uses a violent form of exorcism convinced that she is plagued by a demon who is taunting him. A violent and disturbing film, there are some scenes which might even distress a hardened horror fan. All of the film is shot in the priest's dark and gloomy house and there is only a thin vein of humour to relieve bleakness of the proceedings. Good performances by Fábregas and Romo. Directed and Co-Written by Santiago Alvarado. On Netflix. 7/10.

Some scenes were so funny. It made me laugh really. Overall not a good movie. When it finished, I asked myself, what did I watch? Too much violence, even more kind of pedo and incest scenes made me disturb..i am not sure about second part..

Disturbing third act, but that's it
aronharde30 January 2024
Let me start off by saying that there's nothing too special about this movie, there are no groundbreaking effects or any Oscar worthy performances or an amazingly tight written script. But the movie is not bad either, it's an exorcism movie with some comedic reliefs throughout and a brutal third act. 2/3 of the movie you get introduced to our characters and the movie starts with the character building with some scares mixed in between, but the third act is where the movie gets progressively more violent and disturbing. Overall I don't think that this movie is too memorable even though it has some scenes that are quite unique and terrifying, however I think it will perish between all the movies about exorcism out there. Pretty Good Flick...Last 30 mins Is Where The Action Is
pierrebrown-0746916 October 2023
Starts off slow with lots of dialogue in the first hour, but the last half hour or so more than makes up for it. I personally don't believe in demonic possession but I do watch these type of movies for entertainment value.

If you think about it, a demon is not going to easily release a person from possession after being read a few passages from the Bible. So I like the fact that this movie went where most won't...infliction of real pain on the possessed to loosen the demon's hold, in graphic detail. At times I wasn't entirely sure whether the priest was a sadist or a real exorcist. Watch and you'll find out !

If the first hour had been paced better, I would rated the film a 9. Still liked watching it though, for its originality and acting by the 3 main characters.

Not especially surprising but fun with unexpected comedy!
joncolley31 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, I'm not sure if the comedy was entirely intentional but in the latter parts of the movie I got some real Evil Dead vibes from this and I loved it!

I thought I knew where this was going from the outset, overzealous priest turns out to be a monster but then the second half arrived and it finally got more interesting - in my opinion.

The girl in this is very sexy, and oddly enough she remains very sexy when she's in demon mode lol. But I like her demon, it's a wise cracking 'naughty' one and I honestly expected her to say at one point "I'll swallow your soul!".

This is the sort of movie which will probably get an American remake but it really doesn't need it (although I could imagine an English remake being quite fun but again unnecessary).

I really enjoyed it :)

Very good...
RosanaBotafogo24 December 2020
A lovely film about possession, which I watched a long time ago, I don't remember the details, but passionate, intense scenes of possession, a great ending, little Ximena Romo, despite the baby face, is already 30 years old, excellent chemistry and performance of quartet, for a low budget, with single location, a very good film came out...

Evil within
kosmasp22 December 2021
Who's bad? Yes that is something Michael Jackson asked in one of his songs, but it is also something that can be asked here. We get a former priest - someone who seems to have fallen out of faith. Someone who gets visited by a former friend and asked for a favor ... a favor that will test their friendship and maybe the sanity (of at least one of them) ... and so much more is at stake.

Now the movie starts off more in the sinister and scary but not vividly so category ... it does however go to extremes and anyone who has issues with torture (I mean I hope we all do, right? I mean problems watching it unfold on screen, even when you know it is fake - now that I see as given) ... well may have issues with watching the movie. Especially during one very painful scene ... pun very much intended. You may not be sure where this is going in that scene, but even if you are unsure or sure of the moral of it all and if it makes sense (or not) .. it is harrowing.

Crazy one may call it ... and I just realized this is called part 1 ... I would be down for a second one. But not sure if it'll happen ... especially because it has not been announced yet.

Decent supernatural exorcism flick, with a heavy side of edgy
vasiln16 February 2022
I was intrigued by the high and low ratings here and gave this a try. After watching, I still find them perplexing. This is an okay movie. It is not a masterpiece. It is not crap.

Menendez is a strongly supernatural Spanish exorcism flick-- there's no bandying about with potentially mundane explanations. Our title character is a tortured former priest, just out of jail for murder of a previous exorcism beneficiary/victim. His method? Beat the ever-living crap out of the possessed until the demon is forced out, then beat the ever-living crap out of the now manifest demon. A jail buddy convinces him to go back for One Last Exorcism....

And, in this, Menendez is perfectly acceptable. It doesn't make you think or go Oh Wow or anything like that. It doesn't care if it makes sense or not. It's just a regular old horror movie. It's on the melodramatic side, even considering the melodrama bias of exorcism flicks in general, which might explain some of the "It's Comedy" reviews (no, it's not comedy.)

Where it is notable is where it's willing to go-- and that might be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the audience. Menendez spends a decent amount of time on straight-out torture porn. As promised, we get to watch our possessed victim get the ever-living crap beat out of them. Then, we get to watch their fingernails pulled out. Then, there's some incest. Which isn't too unfair, this is just Linda Blair's crucifix updated for the current millennium. It's not sexy, but it's still exploitative (not necessarily intended as a pejorative.) This isn't A Serbian Film, but fans out of that kind of stuff will probably get some similar enjoyment out of Menendez. And a lot of other people will probably get really turned off (which at least might explain some of the 1 ratings here.)

The story here is acceptable, nothing special. The torture porn is at the level where it will turn off most viewers, while not being extreme enough for the die-hards. If you don't mind torture porn, this is an okay way to while away a few hours, but that's all.

Not your average exorcism
raywackko10 November 2020
Was a pretty decent movie. I mean i laughed alot at some parts couldn't resist. Starts out really interesting. The exorcism was unusual for sure i mean wasn't prepared for it XD had some comedic elements to tone down the violance won't spoil it its even harder to explain. It is violent for sure somehow i wish it had the same tone as it begins. Anyways i don't regret watching it something special. Watched His House yesterday regretted that one. This made up for Netflix in my eyes.

Awesome!
misscourtney-360365 February 2024
Horror is supposed to get under your skin it's kind of the point. This movie did that for me and I like some humor as well horror doesn't have to be serious the whole time! Honestly all I watch is horror and psychological thrillers so it takes a lot to get under my skin. The acting was really good as well and it's hers to believe the actress that plays the daughter at her age is playing a teenager but she did an amazing job! I see it says "part 1" so does that mean we get a second one???????? Please can we y'all can't leave me with an ending like that and not have a second part, seriously!!!!!
