Entertaining and a decent storyline
traceytak14 January 2023
I liked the main character and binge watched the whole series, I wasn't disappointed. There's many layers to the plot and I don't think I could have predicted where it went. It's not just about revenge but also about a woman who is hell bent on revenge trying to juggle her family at the same time. She has her own personal issues too. I'd love to see another series in the future, I would certainly watch it. It's probably not aimed at the younger generation but an older one. It's more like midsummer murders on steroids. The scenery is beautiful and all the characters play their parts well. I enjoyed it.

Interesting and watchable

Warning: Spoilers
I found this Austrian crime drama intriguing enough to kick back and watch it within a few days. Unique quirks make this stand out, including the protagonist's penchant for bouncing ideas and thoughts off the corpses she attends as a mortician.

Color me weird as a beekeeper and science geek, but I mull things over aloud with myself and query my bees in the same manner as Blum, so I was actually delighted when the first body responded to her thoughts. I mean if you can't talk things over with yourself in such a way, I'm thinking you'll have a very difficult time resolving problems.

So maybe the plot line is a bit formulaic and it comes across as some kind of estrogen-fueled Liam Neeson Alpine revenge fantasy, but damn if I didn't cheer Blum on every hog-fueled step of the way.

Entertaining, breathtakingly scenic, and darkly comic.

Complex Main Character
lornak-180089 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't think you are supposed to love or even like the main character. I was about 3 episodes in when I realized just how complex and unsympathetic the main character really was. But still I rooted for her to come out of this series unscathed. It's all about her police officer husband dying in the first few minutes of the series. The police department aren't exactly the heroes here as far as trying to solve her husband's murder. The wife decides to figure out what happened on her own. This results in a lot of violence and her rubbing people the wrong way-to say the least. She's so messed up from her past with her undertaker parents that I wondered how she could even function. And yes, she's an undertaker too. Did I mention that she talked to the dead bodies on her table and they answered her? Yeah, that happens. I enjoyed the whole thing anyway.

Well executed revenge story
zack_gideon7 January 2023
Just finished binge watching this from start to finish. Although a tad predictable (at least for me) I found myself geared in and fully engaged in the story and the acting even though it's not in English (watched the VO English version).

I liked how the main character is dark and the revenge factor is really the driving force with no holds barred. That's what makes it effective. It also is gory and it does evoke happiness when revenge is enacted.

Overall for a VO show I finished it in one sitting, completely engrossed in the plot. It won't blow you away but it's very well directed, the score is good and the actors carry it well. 7/10.

Everything is wrong here
jronly13 January 2023
Totenfrau is a worthwhile series, but why so many strange mistakes in such a series? In the first episode, a Ducati is hit at high speed, killing the rider. The car, which would normally have been badly damaged by a collision with a motorcycle weighing more than 200 kilos, drives away as if nothing had happened. The motorcycle can be repaired and will be picked up by the victim's wife. We see the woman in her fashionable tweed jacket, which flutters open in the wind, without gloves on, riding off on the Ducati through a snowy landscape. Normally, as a motorcyclist, you stop in this situation after 5 kilometers because your fingers are frozen off and your throat is swollen. Otherwise reasonable series.

Absolutely engaging & trilling

Warning: Spoilers
Can't wait to see the second season, I didn't think she had it in her. The story is well written and acting very convincing. If she was a bit all over the place & not such a professional killer, adds to credibility of a housewife wanting to find her husband's killer. I watched all episodes in one night and couldn't stop until the end. Many years ago a ring of high powered men such as mayors, priests , policemen were discovered as the worse peadofile rings in Europe's in Belgium. I found the story line of child trafficking, police coverups very close to the truth. These people should be dealt with exactly the same and no prison sentence is good or enough for them.

Better than expected

Great mystery thriller series from Austria!

What a ride! Fast paced and never boring from start to the last episiode. I would watch it again.

Better than I have expected. I have read in a cinema news papers about this murder series and woooow. Wonderful pictures from Austrian alps and all the intriguing story is happening on high attitude. Great performance from Anna Maria Mühe who was top but also the other characters delivered all respectable work.

Director Nicolai Rohde did a good job too creating Hollywoodian moments. This was top entertaining and so congratulations again to all the staff. Don't miss these series if you like this kind of movies with revenge feelings. 7/10.

A brutal revenge investigation series with many layers of secrets (no spoilers)

A brutal revenge investigation series with many layers of secrets (no spoilers)

investigative series + revenge that the plot looks simple. The villain is not difficult to guess from the beginning of the story. But the story has something different with the heroine's imaginative ability to talk to the corpse. And her actions unexpectedly surprised the audience in every episode. Chapters are not complicated. But hides many secrets that are more than the main plot tactfully until the final ending I recommend that you shouldn't miss it. And the more people who like brutal investigations This definitely answers the question.

The children of impunity
danybur21 January 2023
Summary

A very Austrian thriller that goes from black humor to moments of enormous violence and others that border on terror, with a charismatic protagonist who reactivates her dark facets. An interesting look at the genesis of certain adult criminal behaviors resulting from impunity.

Review

Brünhilde Blum (the very German Anna Maria Mühe) is the owner of a funeral home in a tourist town in the Austrian Tyrol. After the death of her policeman's husband in an alleged accident, the widow begins a relentless search for those she considers guilty.

Several common topics in Central European police officers reappear in this thriller: trafficking in women, pornography, powerful businessmen linked to tourist interests, police corruption, lodges.

But the strength of the series is its protagonist: Blum does not follow the "correct" path to clarify the death of her husband, but one that reactivates dark facets that were already part of her, with an attitude that is also related to someone accustomed to dealing with with corpses. Brünhilde is an investigative force and an amateur and for this reason she progresses somewhat stumbling (and with few concessions from the script), but always with enormous audacity, in a very Austrian story that goes from black humor to moments of enormous violence and others. Bordering on terror. And all with the beautiful winter setting of the Austrian Alps.

On the other hand, and last but not least, the series is an interesting example of the genesis of certain adult criminal behaviors resulting from impunity.

So poor and full of plotholes
mcgavigannicholas23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A policeman gets killed in a hit-and-run and his wife takes revenge on the four men who arranged it. This kind of storyline is nothing new but the execution is so bad.

Firstly, the wife manages to kill someone and steal their phone without the police ever using geolocalisation. She also goes to each murder scene in a hearse yet there is absolutely no CCTV that would catch this on any of the streets.

She sets a priest on fire, kills a doctor in a hospital yet the police are still stumped.

And it all leads up to the final 'twist' where it turns out there was a fifth man who is, surprise surprise, her dead husband's colleage. The other men had all raped a girl when they were younger and, for unexplained reasons, he saw fit to kill her and then brand all the other men as they are now connected.

A typical, lazy netflix series.

I'm Your Worst Nightmare
albertval-6956014 February 2023
A surprisingly remarkable Austrian film. I've watched revenge movies before but this one is something new to offer by way of an intriguing storyline.

It's a great character study. Brunhilde Blum's journey from a quiet, contented wife and mortician to a remorseless avenger is compelling. You feel her quiet rage as she proceeds to hunt down, one by one, those respectable people responsible for the murder of her dear husband. All this taking place while she cares for her children and managing her funeral home. And the revenge is spectacular.

That she's able to talk to dead people as sounding board, whilst not a unique plot device, is darkly humorous as done here.

Quite competent actors. And the mountainscape as captured in film is short of mesmerizing.

Moralists might be disturbed by the message of the film as it seems to glorify impunity. But life is never easy; never black or white. Each is answerable ultimately for his/her actions.

Secret agent of the Alps
carmo-520 January 2023
Woman of the dead (2022) is an average series having six episodes and a main story very similar to many others that have been previously explored in films. I chose to watch it due to its title, which raised my curiosity and the fact that is a short series. The main character i.e., the woman of the dead, is a funeral agent in a small town near Innsbruck (Austria), who owns a business that provides funeral services, inherited by her when her parents died (she was adopted). She is married to a police officer and has two children at school-age. Due to the death of her husband in a car-motorbike accident right at the beginning of the series, she starts a vengeful journey for finding the person responsible for the accident. Her investigation drives her into a complicated situation involving other people in town as well as brings into the scene a revival of past unsolved situations. The story has some holes and quite unrealistic situations that make me wonder if the woman of the dead is some kind of well-trained secret agent.

Entertaining but too many flaws
daleykryochek21 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I can only assume this has been adapted from a book? The story feels like they have tried to stick to the book but don't bother to explain lots of random happenings. It could have been a really great story but there is such little logic to many of the murders in the way they were carried out. Burning the priest? This is something that was surely in the book and they just went with it and didn't bother to actually explain why she burned him? Other murders would have left so much evidence she would be tried and out in prison for the rest of her life. The last episode, so nobody cares the cop was killed then or to check for all the evidence. And wasn't she meant to get a blood sample taken which would have put her at all the crime scenes.

Having said all that. I enjoyed it as an easy watch, certainly not up there with some of the best European or Nordic noir series but only 6 episodes.

a background to shallow to watch
rasketeer30 January 2023
Maybe it is just me but I cannot watch those shallow shows anymore.

First I was excited to see this is an Austrian move until soon I notice it follows the same blueprint like all Austrian movies do.

Small village, bad rich people who think they own everything, a crazy guy, police men who are corrupt/bad This is in literally all Austrian movies.

And then additionally that made no sense.

A small village in the mountains and people seem to not know each other very well?

A habitable hut in the woods... ok. But this hut should be known by everyone in the village. It is about impossible to hide for longer period of time in Austria if you don't know exactly where and how or are lucky.

A police man who doesn't report a crime. Ok, maybe not to the police in the same village. Maybe country capital then? Maybe to the newspaper who will be more than happy to bring such topics?

Mrs Blum, living in the same household with father in law and her two kids, does something completely unusual and brings someone unknown into her house to live there and the only thing she is willing to explain is: 'what is this? An interrogation?' Seriously? This is what she is replying to the father of your just diseased husband. Someone you are living under the same roof with for years and fully trust?

I am now at the start of the second episode and I am already fed up with those scripts that are so far from reality I could watch some Japanese cartoon.

Gave Up On It
unadin17 January 2023
A miniseries will typically get a better review than a movie, because people who don't like a miniseries won't watch the whole thing, and will be less inclined to post a review. Since I didn't watch the whole thing, I won't give it a rating, but I'll explain why I stopped watching it.

The dialog is poor, and the acting deadpan. Perhaps it is better in German. I continued watching anyway, but when she found her husband's cell phone in the compartment in his bike, I stopped watching. How could the police possibly have overlooked that? Whether the police were trying to solve the crime or bury the evidence, there is no way that could have happened.

Better than average
laduqesa6 March 2023
To lose oneself in this story one has to put one's critical faculties to one side. It's just about impossible for the original accident to have been deliberate - how would anyone know to go past the house at that precise time?

Then we are asked to believe that not a single video surveillance camera records the comings and goings of Frau Blum as she goes about her investigations. I'm pretty amazed too that she has nary a bruise or broken nose despite getting badly beaten up twice.

Putting all that aside, this was an enjoyable romp. The scenery was stunning and the subplots were interesting and not just a graft-on. I can't say I was 100% hooked but I watched it all within a thirty-six hour period and was certainly not going to give up.

Well done, with a nice spin of dark humor
tanguero-2253716 January 2023
The series does not have a sexy protagonist in hig heels, but a good sporty woman with a real live.

She has a fulltime job, two kids and is happily married.

She has a wealthy background, because here family is the coroner of that area since a few generations.

All of a sudden here relaxed live changes dramatically due to an accident. Accident?

After that accident live is diffrent a some here in the forum think its strange, that she hops on the ducati and can really drive it at high speeds.

Well honestl, whats so special about that? Nothing, as she is not a "City biker", If you are grown up in the mountains and have been driving a motorbike when you where young, then you will defenitly know how to handle a bike, as the mountains dont excuse flaws and on the other hand, give you a lot of training ground when you are young.

The element of the motorbike was taken, to show the break in here live, after the strong cut due to the accident.

Until that moment, she was living a secure normal mom live, with low riscs, to keep the family save since the birth of her daughter.

Now she feels, she has to wake up and take things in here own hands again and she does that very impressive.

The series is absolutly worth the time watching it (including some dexter fun), Have fun!

Nice but way too easy.
thomaslepro14 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The Totenfrau series (Woman of the dead) started out commendably, but towards the end it lost value. There was a lack of depth and substance to the characters. The whole series moved too quickly and easily from one act to another. The story could have used more space to make the characters more interesting. Aside from the main character Bloum, the rest had virtually no added value or strong character. Every deed/murder Bloum carried out went like child's play, causing the series to lose its suspense.

In addition, the subplots remained unresolved, leaving the viewer with a feeling of dissatisfaction. For instance could there be more dialogue with the death and maybe we could figure out why she has that (gift) to talking with the death? The author could explore why the protagonist has the gift of talking with the death more deeply. It could be a result of a past traumatic event, a unique connection with the spiritual world. It could also be revealed that the death have something to say to her, or show her, that she needs to know in order to move forward in life. Whatever the reason is, it could be explored more deeply through conversations between the protagonist and the death.

Overall, the Totenfrau series had immense potential, but was unfortunately not explored to its full capacity. The characters, plot and subplots needed to be explored more to make the series more compelling, exciting and emotionally engaging.

Shockingly good! Never a dull moment.
Rachela12314 January 2023
This is hands down one of the best.shows I have watched in a while. It had me on the edge of my seat one minute, peeking behind my hands another, cringing in disgust at some scenes and in disbelief at others. It's a well crafted example of 'shocking cinema' with a revenge plot that gets going quickly. The cinematography, editing and performances are superb. The camera movement and angles heighten the suspense. All the characters are believable even when some scenes are incredible / incredulous. It's interesting how they've shown some detail of what goes on at the undertakers to make corpses presentable. I don't think I've seen that sort of detail in film before, but it sets up the later revenge scenes very well as you have no idea just how far things will go. The 'action' revenge scenes are so well set up: again you have no idea where they are going, or who is going to come out on top, so the surprise element is shockingly strong. Well done to all involved. I hope you get the credit you are due. Amazing!!!

REAL dumb, but I've come this far, may as well finish
angelabox18 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The show started off interesting and I thought it was going to be substantial and worth the time. It quickly devolved into pulp camp ridiculousness.

The idea that this woman is going to go and kill all of these people who had something to do with her husband's murder with no cops figuring out who is killing these people is stupid. She has the guy's cell phone and the cops don't use geolocation to track it or use geolocation to track HER movements when all of these people end up dead? DUMB.

Not to mention the subplot of her daughter acting out and then her son being kidnapped and then that is also dropped quickly. Plus, the sex slave just ends up dead all of the sudden with no explanation of that. AND she hasn't rode a motorcycle in years, but somehow is an expert rider after they returned her husbands mangled yet magically repaired motorcycle to her? It's just stupid. But, I'm a masochist so I'm going to finish this thing.

At this point I pretty much assume it's the other cop that killed her husband and I'm only in episode five so I've got another hour and a half to go with this thing. I bet I'm right.

Colourful protagonist.
Nemesis4215 January 2023
The way the story slowly reveals the depths within the main character is stimulating in this story. It's got a revenge thread through it but I found the unfolding of the main character more interesting.

Ultimately the series is very satisfying. The protagonist dances with the multiple antagonists. One ups the other, then back again, like a game of tennis. Our 'hero' protagonist has a riveting journey form the viewer perspective. But the thing is, is she really a hero?

The whole film is well cast with the perfect villains and victims. There's some nasty torture implications in this, but these scenes are not so explicit thankfully.

Warning: Spoilers
I did finish it, however, the reason I kept watching it is probably because of all the plot holes that made me laugh and I would like to maintain my German. I am not sure what else could have been done to make the main character's life easier and bulldozer over everybody. Everything just falls into her hands and works out miraculously.

The transcription was funny too. What I would have translated as a rude "get up" in one of the first scenes when Blum wakes up her daughter was made into a polite "rise and shine". The transcription of the answer was just as inadequate. I did not follow the rest of the transcription from then on, I just listened to the German, so cannot comment on overall transcription.

Very Entertaining but not perfect
kmwehri9 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I love any show like the Killing, where there is a mystery that unravels regarding a family or small town. I love it more when they are foreign and dubbed in English- gorgeous views and I don't have to read subtitles. Reading the description of the show, it made it seem like there was a supernatural element to solving the case, but it was not at all like I would have expected. That part they could have done without, it added a 'campy' unhelpful piece to the story. The other annoying person in the show was the daughter. She added nothing as well except annoyance.

I haven't finished entirely, still 2 more episodes to go, but I have a feeling it is pretty predictable. There are cheesy things like when the cops are solving this crime, they dont even hold onto the evidence (bike, phone, personal items) to investigate!!! Normally police will hold on to this stuff for years or until it is solved, instead, they rebuild the bike and give the wife every piece of evidence. After saying she hasn't ridden the bike in ages, she hops on and flies around for the rest of the series. It's nuts how nonchalant the lead is about committing murder without even concealing evidence. None of this made me want to turn it off though so It is a good show to binge.

Woman of the Dead
Tweekums14 October 2023
This six part Austrian series is centred on Brunhilde Blum, the owner of a funeral home high in the Alps. In the opening scenes we see how her parents drowned while she slept on their boat's deck when she was much younger. Now she is married to a policeman who appears to be contacting another woman behind her back. The first she learns of this is when she finds his second phone after he is killed in an apparent hit-and-run accident. She manages to find the other woman and discovers something much worse than a suspected affair. It looks as though powerful people had reasons for wanting her husband dead. She is determined to get to the truth even though it puts her in danger.

I thought this was an impressive drama. The story didn't go quite as I expected, which was a pleasant surprise and, as well as an interesting mystery and revenge story, there are some delightfully dark comic moments. Brunhilde is a fine central character and Anna Maria Mühe does a great job in the role. The rest of the cast are solid too. The alpine location is scenic and adds to the cold atmosphere of the series. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to fans of European crime dramas.

These comments are based on watching the series in German with English subtitles.

PRETTY DUMB
pjkblue-359268 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Well, it started off interesting and I thought it would be a good whodunit but once she hopped on the restored motorcycle, like other reviewer said, I knew it was going to be a mess.

They could have made it where clues to his death (even though he pulled out on to the road and got smashed into the heavens) were somehow triggered by the corpses she was working on.

But...they turn her into this obsessed killer. Obviously, the police force has no capable forensic department because of all the physical evidence she leaves behind. She drives and parks the photographer's car, and no CCTV exists anywhere, then kills the guy after she allows him to snap spontaneous cheesecake photos, acting all cute and impish.

Her assistant cleans up the entire restaurant, after she stabs the owner with some drug-filled needle and says he has only ten minutes to live - but he pops up later only to get shot in the shoulder.

The pastor? She straps him to a chair and lights him on fire because, and let's face it - no reason.

She seems to like cutting up her murdered bodies, right?

The girl who was raped and killed by this small group who decide to create a pact/depraved snuff society; the mother who has "owned the town" is intent on creating this skiing paradise; the lead killed off her parents on a boating trip... Maybe they should have made Blum the sinister "5th Killer" with the excuse that she had psychopathic multiple personalities.

The ending fizzled.

At least the episodes were only about 45-minutes and my review is as disjointed as this series.

Hope they don't have plans for a second series.
