Mixed Bag
samyoung-826485 May 2021
This film is a moderately low budget film that uses the 2010s social lens that describes an historical incident. Applying patches of modern irrationality does not help make a good historical film.

The story is interesting in that it captures some of the events and the culture from the era. Australia was only founded a few decades earlier and this movie captures pockets of that cultural ruggedness you'd expect.

Where the movie lets itself down is in the portrayal of Achun (Grace Huang) who should not have been let near a camera. If she had researched an Australian vagabond like Tilly Devine she may have had some idea that tough women of that era didn't run around pushing girl power or behaving like Achun does. The performance of Rose (Isabel Lucas) was almost as misguided. I watched this movie to see William Moseley in action and it was reasonable. David Wenham playing Christian Travers was great fun. There were also solid moments from Clive Standen (Charlie) and Thomas Coquerel (Errol Flynn) who were both solid performers.

The Australian film industry needs a shakeup. It needs to take more risks and it needs to stop pandering. This film doesn't satisfy anyone. The last decade has not been a positive step.

an epic saga of fortune.
ops-525359 February 2019
In like flynn, is the story about erol flynn, before he became erol flynn as we old and grey remembers him from the movie theater ,sitting with our lollipops and sixpence, gawping towards the screen, at ,,the super man''.

its a decent story, with quite a bit of fun, excitement, gold, thrills , fights, shouting , drinking and money. its good entertainment from start to end, though you get a feel of low budget product. the timeline is hard to follow. there are some glitches in the backgrounds, with some very modern boat in one shot, and some of the indoor scenes, give you a feeling of a well staged studio light and settings.

but its watchable and not boring at all,, believe me, there are far too much indiana jones, combined with some crocodile dundeeish elements that really makes it recommendable.its a strong 6 from the old grumpy man.

An interesting fabrication
trey-yancy-572-76354730 July 2019
Fact has little to do with this flick. Neither does good storytelling. Every time it starts to roll (which is rare), it comes to a dead stop, and those stops last for a very long time. Frankly, this film is so off with the self-indulgent daisies that one would think it was written and directed by the same person. The thing is stuffed with dull, drawn-out scenes that are only used to provide a breather and story point between the meat of a film but they are made to be the meat with the action merely serving as a distraction. There are some signs of stupidity in this film, such as a backdrop intended to be filmed from a distance, but with the opening view of it - a studio water tower - being so close as to make it look skewed and so lacking in detail as to be obviously fake. A good director would have noticed the badly skewed water tower, but this fellow simply blew it off.

As Flynn's last film was in 1960 (released the year after he died) one wonders about the timing of this film, as virtually no one these days has ever heard of him.

Overall, this movie squeezes about thirty minutes of story into an hour and a half of film. It is passably amusing, sometimes boring, and shows a lack of competence on the part of the director, particularly in the area of storytelling.

Errol Flynn For The Win...Well, Maybe Next Time.
WalkdenEntertainment10 January 2019
This film follows a well known Australian, Errol Flynn, and tells the story of how this adventurous man discovered the cinema screen.

After escaping from a jungle exploration, Flynn decides to steal a ship from a Japanese pirate and assemble his friends. Flynn and the crew will sail the seas in hopes to finding New Guinea Gold.

With an opening sequence that can be compared to Raiders of the Lost Ark, we understand that Flynn is a man who loves a great adventure and really loves women (seriously- the amount of women Flynn goes for is crazy!). Other than that, there's very little to no development for our leading hero. Flynn is also surrounded by his friends, but once again there is no character development for them, which in return gives the audience zero desire to care. Without these characters being built correctly, the film continues on with a story of little interest. The one character that does try to open up about his past is given such a poor introduction that when he gets deep in discussion, I didn't feel anything emotionally.

The film's costume design and sets are amazing and it's obvious for an Australian film that much attention and focus has been given to provide a top looking Australian adventure film for 2018.

As for the plot, like the film characters... there's not much here other than Flynn being keen to sail with his friends for gold- that's really it. The film spends a large majority of time on trying to make consistently cheesy jokes for its audience rather than tell an exciting story. Considering our leads are in a hurry for treasure, there is also plenty of time for the film to take a moment and make jokes, fight a boxing match or even play on the beach instead. Many jokes are also dragged on, and the worst part is that the jokes don't actually land and cause a laugh (well, for me anyway). By the 3rd and final act the jokes disappear and we are then given a dramatic film instead.

Overall, In Like Flynn tries to be the next adventurous Australian blockbuster but instead gets cheesy dialogue and poor character developments, which in return hurts the film story like a sinking pirate ship. I feel there was so much potential but sadly I found the end result to be a complete misfire and a disappointment.

Underrated movie, not bad at all...
yannesbox-179-38586210 February 2019
Nice movie, totally underrated... Somehow reminded me of Indiana jones or some other 80's movie like that. The movie doesn't have much of the fancy special effects that younger generations probably hunger for, so maybe this isn't for teenagers, but people who like older movies will like this because it's made in a similar way like those 80's movies... The story line isn't maybe the best or most exciting, but there is enough entertainment for sure.

Terrible terrible terrible
larsgoerigk-1113711 October 2018
Cheesy, terrible script, clunky dialogues and terrible acting. If they tried to be cheesy on purpose, it didn't work. Instead, it was painful to watch. The action sequences were the exception-maybe that is where those $10,000,000 went- but they didn't make up for all the flaws. Felt like a waste of time watching it.

NOT a 1/2 bad Picture Indeed!!
otterman20go3 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Good cast played with gusto. Lots of action. Fine direction by Russell Mulcahy. Good musical score by David Hirschfelser - especially that diddy "I Captain this Voyage, Bound for South Australia". Fits the movie perfectly. As "Flynn" says in the movie, "this wouldn't make a 1/2 bad picture". And on a 10 million dollar budget, it's not. I liked it.

In Like Flynn
henry8-330 October 2019
Apparently how Errol Flynn lived his early days adventuring in Australia before Hollywood beckoned.

Whilst there are one or two fun set pieces here, this is a pretty feeble Indiana Jones lite adventure with 2 dimensional characters, some questionable acting talent and a script that must have taken hours to write.

Avoid.

Pretty, lame.
ptb-815 October 2018
Apparently Errol Flynn was a swashbuckling Indiana Jones type in New Guinea in1930. This new 2018 film is treading the same territory as the 1993 FLYNN which starred a more suitable Guy Pearce as Errol. IN LIKE FLYNN has a KING KONG Jack Black start which lurches into some Indiana Jones jungle chase and straight into a KITTY AND THE BAGMAN Sydney sequence. Once aboard a yacht it becomes RIDDLE OF THE SANDS with a Robert Shaw JAWS character. Many many images and ideas from other films. Nice young actors and some good photography and some not good acting and clunky dialogue. As it went on I found it all irritating. Also the early action scenes are far to violent and gruesome for what should be a PG movie. It's a R. Costas Mandylor appears, finally freed from SAW D list hell. I want to recommend IN LIKE FLYNN but alas, it is a misguided project, haphazardly executed and not the fun it should be. Why the violence and slashing and brutal deaths had to be so graphic is very disappointing.

His life was more entertaining before Hollywood
tflynn-4607421 May 2019
This is a good compilation of Flynn's activities before he became an actor. If you have read his autobiography the story is more or less true. Aussie actors are good and it holds interest. His life in New Guinea and Australia is highly readable and this is a good shot at telling the story. Ain't Shakespeare, but enjoyable.

Not good!
gordypix16 October 2019
The title looked promising but the film failed to deliver. Sorry to say but this is a waste of time to watch and is badly scripted, edited, acted and padded out with nonsense.

Hokey
westsideschl15 June 2019
Lots of really bad stereotypes (being attacked by overly costumed natives in a jungle - please!) & noticeably contrived embellishment if not largely made up making of an Errol Flynn image. I agree w/another reviewer - it was cheesy.

It could have been good, but it wasn't.
atinkerer26 April 2020
It starts off like a high school remake of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, a total ripoff. After that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, it gets worse. The main character, Errol Flynn, is never established as the focus of the movie and seems to get lost in the crowd. The dramatic highs of the movie don't build to a high enough impact, they don't focus on Flynn, and they don't carry the story along. You get bored while you sit wondering where is this movie going? I read the book Beam Ends, by Errol Flynn, and although it started off really bad, it did get going and turned out to be a good read. This movie has nothing to do with the book and is total fiction unrelated to the life of Errol Flynn. It is lackluster from beginning to end, and not worth watching.

Wow, I loved this film
Movie-Timer13 November 2018
I wasn't expecting to be wowed by this film, but it's jam-packed with action and class, which is pretty fitting for an Errol Flynn feature. In Like Flynn does a great job of reviving the epic swashbuckler genre while letting us into the pre-Hollywood adrenaline-fuelled life of one of Australia's finest. Nice job by all those involved: great direction, writing, soundtrack, costumes and sets. Take a bow!

I had thought that they had stopped making B movies
mikegibb-6041825 October 2019
This takes me back to my youth when you had to sit through a B movie before they showed the main feature. This reminds me of those except generally they were better acted. If you were handing out awards for the most wooden and truly dire acting this would certainly be a contender. Every member of the cast is just dreadful with the character of the boat owner producing a performance that resembled Tony Hancock's impersonation of Robert Newton playing Long John Silver. Whatever you do, don't follow in my footsteps and waste a couple of hours of your life on this sorry mess.

I really hope this was supposed to be a spoof, 'cos if it wasn't it is a worry. I don't think it has the least connection with fact and poduction and direction was poor. The whole thing is a waste of time imho.

Not In Like Flynn
lindzmorris18 May 2020
With seemingly no attempt to find an actor to look, or sound, like Errol Flynn, this is a film of four guys having fights and fun on a boat! It's ok, as long as you're not expecting to see an Errol Flynn based film!

Worst movie ever from the best subject matter ever.
lauriebyron18 March 2021
Eroll Flynn lived an amazing life before he made it big in Hollywood.

He was swashbuckling before being a Hollywood swashbuckler.

Somehow this movie makes his life boring.

A Win for Flynn
madiimcc24 April 2019
In Like Flynn is a cinematic masterpiece bringing to life the daring adventures of Hollywood star Errol Flynn before he was discovered by the spotlight. Focusing on Flynn (Thomas Cocquerel) and his fellow sailors, who later become close to family, In Like Flynn takes viewers on an adventure unlike any other. From gunfights to escaping the treacherous jungles, this film is filled with those classic action scenes that are hard to find in modern action-adventure films, bringing back moments that remind me of Indiana Jones type adventures that I could watch again and again.

Lead actor too old at 30 to play 21 year old Flynn in 1930
georgegauthierDC3 August 2020
The movie opens in 1930 when Errol Flynn was only 21 years old. The thirty year old actor who played the title role looked like a man fully grown, and was simply not credible as a young guy barely come into adulthood.
