Documentary filmmaking as it should be

In less than hour, SKIPS STONES FOR FUDGE tells an engaging and contemplative story about how people attempt to live a meaningful life. As every great film does, SKIPS STONES both entertains and prompts deeper thought. The film is a well-crafted example of how the stories of everyday people make for great documentaries.

Everyone wants to be a World Record holder

This is an excellent documentary about a weird and obscure sport. Weird and obscure because its an activity that we have all done at some point in our lives never thinking it was a Sport. The competition of stone skipping is real and fierce. Everyone wants to be a World Record holder. This film is about the sport, but clearly it goes deeper in to the psyche of the competitors. Fun to watch and the wait for the actual world record number is enjoyable. Think "King of Kong" set on a body of water.

The most fun you can have with a pile of rocks and some water

Loved this flick. I found myself wanting to go to the lake and throw stones. The rivalry that is portrayed between the competitors is genuine and the desire to help each other in personal matters is heartfelt. The main characters have been challenging each other for years always trying to best the other and obtain the World Record. Personal struggles interfere to make this a story more about human nature than achieving stardom. Do yourself a favor and watch this documentary.

An empathetic look at an outsider competition

I was lucky enough to see Skip Stones For Fudge at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in Montana. I was aware of the filmmaker's previous film "Freeload" the year before. Like that film, SSFFudge treats all of the characters with respect and dignity even as they purse goals and passions outside of social norms. It's a well paced, well shot, well constructed film about a stone skipping competition- yes a stone skipping competition- which is surprisingly intense. As the skippers continue to push the envelope in their quest for ever more skips the pressure grows.Instead of focusing too much on the sport the filmmakers wisely make it about the skippers. It's a tight heartwarming romp.
