A Decent Modern Version Of An Old West Bounty Hunter/Snowy Mountains Montana Movie
fredgfinklemeyer19 October 2018
10/18/2018 Definitely worth watching one time, but the storyline and acting could have been much, much better. Enjoy it for what it is and try not to be to critical while you watch. Bon Appetit

Better than expected (with a caveat).
alyssa_starelli22 February 2019
With the exception of dialogue with Rose (trite, bad acting, unneeded romantic sub plot) the majority of the rest is well written and well acted for the budget. Cameos by bigger name actors are nicely integrated. Story is believable and details are seemingly and unusually accurate to the period. Filming is well done with well curated sets, costuming and beautiful locations. Re-casting or removing the Rose character would have elevated this flick to "memorable".

Eh. Not bad.
DaveyBoyMus25 December 2020
Perhaps the film's great cinematography will stand out, as well as the beauty of its female lead, Jenny Curtis. Other than that, the story moves sparingly with its share of backstory, blood, and old-times dialogue. Not a great movie, but not a bad one, either.

One star better than A Reckoning
Top_Dawg_Critic9 September 2018
This is the second failure I've seen this week from Justin Lee - the other being another miserable mess, A Reckoning. Does he not know how to write a screenplay or direct his actors? I guess this is the result when all your experience in writing and directing is TV series. At least give one of those hats to a professional that can teach you something before you try to do it all yourself when taking on a full length feature film. And what's with the Westerns genre? Dumb story that goes nowhere with lousy pacing and boring extended scenes that make you yawn. At least the directing was slightly better than A Reckoning. A generous 3/10 for the cinematography and directing.

Just had to go to the obligatory Southerners must be Racist by nature narrative.
peterpuckfan-081158 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I must be the only one who notices the bad guy was the one wearing the Confederate Uniform? Of course, because anyone who fought for the South was inherently Racist, but then we have the scene where they're in Montana and strangely there is a group of Men that look remarkably like the KKK? You know cause the KKK is everywhere, just read comments on Facebook and you will see. Is Spike Lee your Mentor? The good Guy was the Guy who married the Black Woman......Yeah, I will end this there...Ridiculous.

Great scenary and nothing more.
krowland-062636 February 2021
I wanted to like this, since it was set in an area I know and like. Unfortunately, nothing about this was decent except the location. Poor direction, a bad script, and maybe collectively some of the worst acting I've ever seen. The story could have been great, but sadly, this was really awful. I think three stars was being generous.

Great Western story...
Blumanowar17 January 2020
Great Western, If you don't like Westerns, don't watch them. Clearly the low ratings on here are from the Avengers and Marvel types who only like the modern cgi n action. I happen to love those action movies as well as Westerns but they're completely different. So don't expect a Western Sci Fi this is just good ole Western, good guy vs bad guy. Broaden your horizons young lads lol..

Beautiful scenery in the high country & some cowboying to go with it
Blumanowar17 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Beautiful scenery in the high country & some cowboying to go with it. IF you like westerns, this is one that develops the characters well so it's not all action as you might be expecting...but their hunt for the bad guys, the bounty hunters brother, who killed his true love, takes up a good hour of the movie. In between the opening action and the final hour is some beautiful scenery. And during that hunt, you discover much about the good brother and his tracker, the daughter of one of best trackers in the west, whos father refused to go with him because he didn't care much for the law. She makes an interesting companion for him and they trek through the mountains and snow in search of his racist war torn brother who killed his black lover just as they were ready to head out west and leave the war behind just as it started. Needless to say, After that he joins the Union to fight opposite his brother. Move forward to the final hour and the hunt for his crazy brother...Once the fight starts the final hour is full of action and its worth the wait. Don't get me wrong there are some exciting bits along the way but the best Cowboying is in the final hour. Sit back, build a fire, grab a beer and enjoy.

Virtues shouted at your face
sisoeff22 February 2019
I hate books and movies that shout virtues in my face. A virtue cannot be forced into you. It must be introduced softly and gently, in a way that you feel it as part of your essence, as something that you always were and don't have to think about it and consider it. People want to find something from themselves in the movie, not to be taught what to be. Not to mention that feminism and racism stand very insulting as main points in this movie. We should have been forgotten that social problems long time ago and movies like this one are only bringing it back in the most annoying way. Two stars for the efforts in the camera work.

The BEST low budget I have seem for a long time
Tr-u-mpbilly16 September 2018
You know this is a low budget film. You have to have the ability to decipher between big and low budgets. This was outstanding! Amazing what they did with a few dollars. On a side note, this site is becoming riddled with people that have no business reviewing films. Something is wrong with their heads.

Dying Time is Here
nogodnomasters1 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Ollis Ransom (Hollis Ransom) is an ex-Union soldier working as a bounty hunter in the gold mining community of 14 Miles, Montana circa 1874. He is known and trusted in town even though he talks like Sling Blade. His brother Everett (Todd A. Robinson) has become an outlaw in a white hood. Mine owner Jonathan Carrington (Bruce Davison) has placed on price on his head, one that Hollis wants to cash in on. He hires Rose Gage (Jenny Curtis) to be a tracker.

Rose had an intellect and provided some light moments. These were things that could have been better scripted with a light soundtrack. The film has its heavy moments. The opening battle scene was a joke in fighting and dialogue.

I was slightly entertained.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Endless whispering
wotevfir-2178522 July 2022
Have any of these actors actually learnt how to act. You may whisper loudly and throw your voice, so as the audience may hear what the dialogue is. This is not the only film I've viewed recently, which possesses these issues.

I Reckon I've Never Heard Reckon So Much
timsusanday20 August 2023
Well, this movie looked good. And by looked good I mean visually. Some of the scenery was amazing. Aside from the contrail and moving plane I saw.

Anyway.

For some reason I knew what I was going to get before I even started it. I was kind of hoping it would turn out to be a cheesy western, but ultimately I felt it was just bad.

I normally try not to look at my watch during a movie, but I did several times through this. I also looked at my phone several times, too.

I kind of liked the story, but it was riddled with cliches and I'm pretty sure the word "reckon" was said more times than I have fingers and toes.

Not sure why I didn't stop it and watch something else.

Good idea for a story with poor execution
arohrmayr15 December 2021
This is not a high budget film but does ok with what it has. Beautifully shot, but more attention should have been paid to details. The 20th century American flag in a civil war battle was a very bad sign from the very first scene.

Expectations
hugeholmes2 February 2020
If you are walking into this film expecting a large shootout like you would see in a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood film, you will have to turn this off because reality is not with you. I watched the first three minutes of this movie and damn near turned it off, I'm glad I continued watching it. It's a low-budget film and you have to treat it like a low budget film. The acting is suspect and the costume design is absolutely poor when it comes to the North and South battle in the beginning of the movie. They were entirely to clean and not realistic. Regular showers and general cleanliness did not exist in the war years. The messages are very good, they touch on many of the sentiments of the era, the dialogues are good. Some of the scenes are a bit drawn out, but that's because of funding, the scenic Aesthetics are fantastic and they set this movie in the very appropriate places.

Absolutely loved it!
pdxactor7 September 2018
It's everything you want in a Western (except maybe Clint Eastwoood or more horse work). The pace is spot on, the performances are superb, and there are lots of interesting characters to discover along the way. Terrific indie.

Classic western flare with modern tones!
jeffeamon8 September 2018
If you are a fan of classic westerns then you will love this film! However, it also does not shy away from subject matter in the current world which deals with racism and strong female characters. The locations and cinematography in this film are outstanding. The acting by the lead is reminiscent to the growling Eastwood of old and the director brought out one of Bruce Davison's best performances. Forgot that Meg Foster was still alive and she is well served as an aging bar owner in this! Being a big fan of westerns, my only critique would be that some of the continuity between a few things could have been better but that is me being a die hard movie nut.

Reading some of the other reviews it is interesting to me...people should leave reviews that ACTUALLY talk about the film. But people these days right?

Give this film a watch and check out a few other modern day indie western gems such as "Outlaws And Angels" and "The Ballad Of Lefty Brown."

This was a surprise
jms-7927122 November 2020
This showed up on a roku western channel, after the first 2 minutes I checked the title out here. I came close to not watching it at all after reading most of the reviews, glad I changed my mind. If you can get through the first 1/4 to 1/3 which to me was stunted and painfully slow you will be rewarded with a great story line, beautiful scenery as mentioned in other reviews and the acting improves greatly. You will not fined stunning horses with endless chases back and forth. But a much more realistic portrayal of the time period and hardships. The action picks up dramatically.
