Me or the Menu (2022)
I lasted less than five minutes.
There honestly is no reason to have ever broadcast this awful show. Contrived drama, unlikeable everyone, poorly scripted, and painful execution does nothing except damage the Food Network brand. Not sure what they were thinking, but 60 minutes of commercials would be more tolerable.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
I find it hard to know where to begin.
First, Ron Howard should be thoroughly embarrassed to have his name associated with this. Secondly, this ended up not even being a true crime documentary. It became a treatise on internet sleuths and what useless human beings they are. That the producers of this show even gave them a forum is disgusting. Finally, this was little more than exploitation of a young woman's mental illness and subsequent death, clearly for profit. There was absolutely no educational or social value to what was presented here. Netflix, you should also be embarrassed to have put this on your website.
Any Bullet Will Do (2018)
Great scenary and nothing more.
I wanted to like this, since it was set in an area I know and like. Unfortunately, nothing about this was decent except the location. Poor direction, a bad script, and maybe collectively some of the worst acting I've ever seen. The story could have been great, but sadly, this was really awful. I think three stars was being generous.
Big Little Lies (2017)
Rating reflects Season 2 only
The first season was engaging, well scripted, well acted, and overall outstanding. Season 2 proves that season 1 was either an accident, or the second season shouldn't have been filmed at all. A horribly boring script, wooden acting, just horrible direction, and overall an awful series. I've given up after three episodes. I can't take anymore. This is about the closest thing to a Hollywood root canal as I've ever seen. These actors and HBO should be embarrassed to be associated with this mess.
Scorpion (2014)
And this rating is being generous.
Ridiculous story lines, poor plot construction is suitably offset by some of the worst acting I have ever seen. How this stayed on for four seasons is beyond me. Thankfully it was put out of its misery, and ours, in 2018, but I am shocked that any network has so little content they have to replay these episodes.
Avenue 5 (2020)
I really tried to like this.
But honestly, this just isn't very well done, not very funny, and finish the series was a chore. I definitely won't be looking forward to season 2.
Deadwood (2019)
This is not a 10 star flick
I was totally looking forward to this. And while the storyline is great, the dialogue and direction are just horrible. Why is everyone talking like rejects from a bad Robin Hood movie? Why are there flashbacks that have only occasional relevance? This could have been done so much better, and it's a shame an excellent story was ruined. It was a struggle to get through, which is common for 8 part series, but shouldn't be that hard for a sub 2 hour movie.
Hanna (2019)
It's Really Pretty Good
My complaint is similar to the complaints I have about many of the series, both on streaming and premium networks. Legitimately, this is a story worth about 2 1/2 hours of production. At most. Instead, it's apparent that the writers and director struggled to fill in lots of just "stuff' to turn it into an extended series. Too much that doesn't add anything to the story line. Too much that does nothing for character development. And too much that just makes you want to fast forward so we aren't tortured by irrelevance while trying to get to the meat of the story. I think someone needs to inform Hollywood that they aren't being paid by the minute.
This series is a great concept. Well shot, good characters, and just poorly produced to reach a target that didn't need to be reached.
Young Sheldon (2017)
Disappointing
I really was hoping to like this. But I was really disappointed. I can't pin down whether it was the writing, the stiff acting, or just that it wasn't entertaining, but this was a horrible miss. There is some work to be done, or this will be a short-lived show come November. Just to be clear, I love BBT, and thought this had huge potential as a spin-off, but it totally missed the mark.
The Last Ship (2014)
Pretty good, even with the occasional lack of logic in the writing.
I starting watching this in the last couple of weeks. Never saw any of the earlier seasons, and in fact, never heard of the series until I saw a promo during the summer. It is a decent escape, and is well enough done that I will keep on watching it, and may go back and watch the earlier seasons.
My big complaint is that it really isn't that good, and is kind of a rip off of some earlier cable shows (Strike Back comes to mind). It seems to be the best available programming, which is more a state of television production these days than an endorsement of this particular show. It isn't a ten star show. The plot is predictable, the acting sketchy, and some of the action sequences poorly done.
That said, it's all we have in this dismal summer for television.
UPDATE: I think I've pinned down my issues with this and similar series. This is a great story that can be told in 2 1/2 or 3 hours. Like most. But to cover 8 or 10 weeks, the directors have to add so much content that does nothing but slow the story down. It makes the entire production tedious. That's why I've given p on many of these series, like Stranger Things. Sorry, Iv'e got more to do with my time than watch a short story stretched out over 10 episodes.
