Inaccurate But Touching World War II Tearjerker
zardoz-1316 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Director Brian Skiba's World War II romance "Christmas Truce" is preposterous in just about every way imaginable. Nevertheless, "Merry Ex-Mas" writer Alexandra Julson and he-this represents their second film together-manage to pull off this tearjerker with loads of sincerity. First, the story takes place during the Battle of the Bulge, when damned few Allied planes were aloft. Had Allied airpower flocked across the skies, Hitler's last desperate gamble to stalemate the war would have been crushed much faster. In this made-for-television your, an American, Captain John Myers (Craig Olejnik of "Thir13en Ghosts") is accompanied by two Allied agents who are going to masquerade as Germans, bail out over occupied enemy territory, and blast two bridges that the Germans are using to spearhead their advance. Anybody who knows anything about the Bulge knows that the Germans had infiltrated American lines with their own men masquerading as Americans and had turned everything into chaos by sending the army in different directions. The Germans surprised the Americans, and General Patton had to haul ass to save the encircled American Army from annihilation. Foul weather and German anti-aircraft riddle the C-47 and the plane crashes. All but one of our heroes bail out to safety, but an African-American airman, Jenson (Eli Goree of "Race"), injures his leg on the way down. Happily, a bespectacled doctor Lieutenant Berkowitz (Adam DiMarco of "When We Rise") who has been itching for some combat, happens to be along, and he keeps Jenson alive. The problem now is that one of the Allied soldiers dispatched to impersonate a German soldier is dead. Moreover, Captain Myers is seriously committed to the welfare of his men. He sets out to find somewhere for Jenson to ride out the night before they resume their mission.

They wind up in a stable at a remote farm on the week of Christmas. Myers meets the woman of his dreams, an attractive Belgium bachelorette, Alina Hammond (Ali Liebert of "Wonder") who lives with her mother, Helen (Kate Vernon of "Pretty in Pink"), by themselves. Helen's husband has gone missing, so the two women must hold the farm together. Happily, they are reunited with him after the war. Anyhow, Helen cautions her daughter about the problem with getting romantic with soldiers. She got romantic with a French soldier, and she never saw him again. Alina persuades her mom to let the Americans spend the night. One thing leads to another and Alina and Myers become an item of sorts. They try to go to bed one evening, but the unwitting Helen intervenes and keeps them apart. Meanwhile, the Germans are crawling like ants over the countryside. They almost catch Alina with Myers after the two lovebirds have gone out to chop down a Christmas tree. At this point, things grow complicated, and Lieutenant Berkowitz and Jenson are captured by a German patrol. The German officer-in-command, a stern looking customer named Oberst Josef Braun (Josh Blacker of "Elysium") takes these Americans into custody about the same time that an American fighter strafes the car carrying his wife and son. Braun's wife Lilly Braun (Elise Gatien of "Fifty Shades of Gray") is wounded, and Berkowitz manages to save her life. Meanwhile, Myers rescues Braun's son Phillip (Luke Roessler of "Legion") from a car before it blows up. When all of this mayhem occurs, the small French village is about to celebrate Christmas. Oberst Braun decides to call a truce and let enemies sit down and enjoy 24 hours of peace.

Combat war movie aficionados will probably want to shun this tearjerker, not only because there isn't that much firefighting going on, but also because things get somewhat sappy at the end. Suffice to say, "Christmas Truce" was far better than I expected, didn't wear out its welcome, and was sincere enough in every respect despite its appalling historical inaccuracies.

Absurd and unrealistic but sappy enough for many to like
recklessron30 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a run-of-the-mill war / action story with a Christmas theme. Totally unrealistic and unbelievable but if you like sappy love stories and can ignore all the plot holes it can fill some of your spare holiday time.

An example: The Germans have the drop on the good guys and are about to execute someone when they are suddenly overcome (by surprise). The good guys wrestle away several machine guns and a few have pistols (during the struggle none of the Germans fire a single shot). Then a car with a German officer arrives. Strange things happen. Then the officer pulls out his gun and tries to shoot someone - stopped by a local French woman. He then takes another shot at a good guy who punches him in the face when he misses. Then the officer turns and points his handgun at the main character and they discuss 'a Christmas truce' as the German reinforcements arrive. Why all the good guys with the machine guns didn't shoot him down the second he reached for his gun is totally beyond my imagination and IMHO no one will ever believe it could happen like that.

But... if you don't care about realism and like a sappy love story that is entirely predictable then you might just like this.

Peace for a day.

Set behind the German lines in the Second World War, this is a story of a romance that blossoms in the build up to Christmas in 1944.

The very handsome Captain (Craig Olejnik) leads his troops to a remote house, where they are offered refuge and aid by a beautiful girl and her Mother.

The acting isn't always on form, but once again it is nice to see a seasonal film that doesn't follow the trend of many others. I actually think they could have made it longer and included more interaction with the rest of the platoon -their girls at home, etc, but as it is, it's just fine.

Sweet and simple, just like me.

Not the usual
Jackbv12321 December 2019
If you want historical or technical accuracy, apparently this isn't your movie. Watch the history channel. Over and above the technical inaccuracies, I did find the Captain's distractions from duty to be annoying. The story circumstances also seem completely unbelievable, but this is a Christmas movie, so go with it.

This movie is a different approach to Christmas romance. The romance is sweet. As to story, there is more conflict than the dozens of Christmas movies on the main Christmas movie channels, and it includies war violence. There is drama.

At certain points, the dialogue is a little high-brow or esoteric.

The ending? What can I say that's not a spoiler. I guess I can say it has the same good characteristics and bad as the rest of the movie.

Ridiculous, disrespectable disregard of history
miller-9010 December 2018
This movie was so rife with historical inaccuracies that I just had to turn it off. The movie shows airmen outside a B-17, then shows them airborne in a C-47. The "medic" is a lieutenant. Of course, all combat medics were and still are enlisted men, not officers. One of the U.S. soldiers was African-American, while the others were white. African-Americans served in the US Army with great distinction in WWII, but there were no racially integrated units. The plane drew a great deal of flak, but flak batteries were not present in remote areas where this plane was dropping its soldiers. And flak was ineffective at night against a single plane. It required searchlights to ID large formations of attacking planes so that their altitude could be determined to properly set fuses on AAA shells. Then the fuselage was perforated at 8-inch intervals by machine-gun bullets while the plane is shown above the clouds. Of course ground fire could not do that at such an altitude, and there were no attacking enemy planes. After parachuting from the stricken plane, the medic attending his comrade with a broken leg, exclaims that they need to "find medical supplies," as if a combat medic would enter the battlefield without supplies. The group of soldiers is then given shelter in the heroine's barn. The temperatures during the Battle of the Bulge were the lowest in Europe in decades, but the soldiers are shown in the barn with the lights on (BEHIND GERMAN LINES at night) with their coats off and perfectly functional windows and doors wide open. The reason for the light is that the fool captain has a fountain pen and a bottle of ink working on the novel he's writing! OMG. Finally, the American captain is wearing bright, not subdued, rank insignia on his helmet and one epaulet but not the other. Of course, this display of rank would have drawn sniper fire directly to him, so only subdued insignia was worn in combat areas What finally made me turn the TV off was when the captain tells the girl that he attended "Texas A&M." However, that school was named AMC (Agricultural and Mining College) for almost TWENTY YEARS AFTER WWII. It was not renamed, Texas A&M until 1963! Believe it or not, I omitted much of the stupidity perpetrated by the producers, writers, and directors

It's clear that none of the scores of people responsible for this movie had an IQ above 30. It was perhaps the worst attempt at a period piece I've ever seen in my life -- just pathetic. It is so bad that it would actually be offensive to anyone who served in the ETO.

Absurd, predictable, illogical, feel good nonsense.
rps-219 December 2015
Enjoyable enough if you can subdue your angry reaction to errors, stupidity and Canadian insecurity. The camera work is good.Thats about all that is. But the acting is pitiful, the effects artificial and the ending appallingly predictable. Christmas movies, with few exceptions, are hopelessly bad but this one must be in the top (bottom?)ten. So many errors... The US armed forces were not racially integrated at the time. Women did not walk around rural areas in occupied Belgium wearing designer clothing. And how, in the name of all reason and common sense could a 50 pound sack of Canadian Redpath sugar from Montreal, a rather blatant product placement, end up in a rural house in 1944 occupied Belgium? And once again our milquetoast Canadian filmmakers show their lack of backbone. This was a Canadian produced and Canadian tax subsidized film. Then WHY IN HELL is the story about American rather than Canadian soldiers????

Humanity is the overall theme
casword-2614825 December 2015
A friend of mine, who is a romantic, recommended this movie. Luckily, ION showed it one more time, and I was totally engrossed. The theme of the story is humanity, even in time of war. The movie illustrates how love can come in many forms--romance, brotherhood, family, compassion, etc. I loved the quotes by famous writers, especially the one about tomorrow by John Wayne. When I googled the Duke, I discovered several of his quotes. Although I read that there were errors in the film, I easily overlooked them for the sake of the story. As a writer myself, I've sometimes used artistic license as needed. If this movie comes out in DVD, I'll definitely buy it!

Fake Movie
shelleymgdarby21 November 2017
Even though this really happened, it was British soldiers and Germans, there were no Americans involved, pathetic to change a true story to again make the Americans look like heroes, every time they change history, they look like fools.......very good movie about it called Joyeux Noel

Doesn't anybody just like entertainment anymore?
docm-323044 December 2019
The haters will go crazy with this film, but let them wallow in it, it seems to give their fragile egos a boost. I'm not usually a huge fan of Hallmark type Christmas movies and as a veteran, I gave this movie a chance despite expecting to be appalled, but I was very pleasantly surprised. If you just want to sit back, put the fire on and enjoy a great story (yes it's fiction...relax for crying out loud), this has to be one of the most romantic and heartwarming films I've ever seen. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Olejnik's (The Listener) acting continues to be excellent and his leading woman, Ali Liebert couldn't have given a better performance. She is also truly stunning in this movie. As one who has had the pleasure of bringing both German and Canadian veterans together as brothers caught up in a war, this "story " was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. I highly recommend it to those who "enjoy" movies.

Nice love story
emtcase25 December 2018
I wanted a fact-based story about the real event that took place during WW I. I should have read the reviews before I rented it. It was a nice love story with some good acting but not at all what I was looking for. It took place during WW II and was pretty disappointing. Low budget film for sure.

Are you kidding me?!?
vickilgreen15 December 2018
I love Christmas movies! And I love historical movies set in WWII. I have no trouble forgetting all logic for a good story. But this movie is just ridiculous!! More holes than Swiss cheese in the storyline. It doesn't even have that good old feel good ending that most Christmas movies do. What a waste of two hours. I'm so disappointed.

I've seen adult movies with better acting, production and script...
tessavlinder7 February 2019
As a historian and a sucker for 'Hallmark Christmas Movies', I looked forward to this movie. Unfortunately it was a total waste of my time. Poor acting, a horrible script and bad filming. All crew should be ashamed for taking part of this "movie"...

I liked it right up until...
gradgurl8 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This was on Ion TV and as a fan of hokey Christmas movies and period dramas, I was excited to see it. Until they did the whole love interests hate each other but then realize it's love. Ugh. But I lost it when... and maybe I'm confused, but the hero flees the village with his men, a medic and a wounded pilot... after running a bit from the whole battalion of German soldiers... the Hero decides to GO BACK to the village they just fled from to check on the heroine. Leaving his men, the medic and the wounded pilot, alone in the woods with a French spy to escape the Germans who are apparently RIGHT BEHIND THEM judging from the continuous gunfire in the background. At that point I lost all respect for the dude. I hope he's dead. ;) It's very hokey, but cute. Still, dude, you abandoned your men. No word on whether the black pilot died or not. Stupid movie.

Enjoyable and Touches Different Scenes
dlstrayer22 December 2015
I did not plan on watching this movie. I had just turned off my work laptop after dealing with over stress. I turned on the TV and ended up at the beginning of this movie and I am so glad I did. It had me forget everything else but the movie and for that alone I appreciate the movie. For me, the movie was perfect. A good story, good acting, good camera work. There may have been a detail or two that was historically incorrect but I did not notice and I didn't care. I highly recommend this movie if you want a good story and sit back and relax in the Christmas spirit. It will become one of my favorite Christmas movies right up there with 'A Christmas Carol' which also had an inaccuracy (cameraman in glass). Best enjoyable time out I have had all season.

Oh dear, what a load of rubbish.
glendajohnson-1798421 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What a load of rubbish, the acting was very poor at best,.., the camera work was amateurish , .. Just how can a man parachute out of a plane and hit the ground BEFORE the plane crashed behind him?? .... Nearly two hours of my life I will never get back.., .. to sum it up, the storyline was good, BUT they failed big time to pull it off...

Touching Christmas movie
lornadobson26 December 2020
It's nice to see a Christmas movie that doesn't involve silly premises. World War II has been a forgotten war and I'd rather see a romance in that era than the same-old same-old Christmas formula set in LA or NYC.

Everybody makes fun of the Hallmark Christmas movies genre but this one takes a different tack. It is well acted and quite touching.

Cheesy Xmas movie
kyragd200919 August 2022
Another typical Xmas movie. You know exactly what's going to happen at the end! I watched it because I needed some sound around the house. For that it served well. Other than that, oh well...
